Last week, the missus and I were in San Diego and decided one day to take a guided tour of the city. Our driver at one point remarked that where we were was originally underwater — the navy had dredged the harbor to accommodate battleships and carriers during WWII and dumped the fill in our location. Recalling that ground liquefaction caused much of the damage in the ’89 Loma Prieta (San Francisco) quake, and noting the buildings (convention center and two high-rise hotels) nearby, I concluded that San Diego didn’t get any seismic activity.

    Guess I was wrong.

Not too often. Easter 2010 led me to acquire Quake Wax, and now I regret it.

I didn’t get the alert. I turn that stuff off when possible.

Everyone’s seen the video of the elephants circling at the Wild Animal Park, I assume.

(Why didn’t you mention you were coming, Shpip?)

      • juris imprudent

We watched the water slosh around our pool (Serra Mesa neighborhood) during that quake.

(Why didn’t you mention you were coming, Shpip?)

Schedule was all buggered up, since I had to keep the wife company when she wasn’t dealing with neurologists. And much of my free time was watching the ol’ alma mater play squeekyshoe ball.

I’ll be back for another conference in February. I’ll be sure to let the San Diego-area Glibs know.

I will be in San Diego the first week of July.

        Good to know, robc.

Anyway, Julian (epicenter) is in the mountains: it snows there. Cute tiny mining town.

At summer camp* we’d go into a disused gold mine and chew Certs in utter darkness to watch the sparks. I doubt they do that anymore.

Just got back from a massage.

It’s gonna take a few more sessions to get all the knots worked out.

    • The Other Kevin

I can imagine. We just got a massage therapist to rent one of our extra rooms at the gym. That’s going to be great.

      • Sensei

My massage therapist wont even let her husband use that phrase, and it is a quick 86 if a customer uses it.

Much like my flexible handedness, I’m ambifuckstrous.

So no only sad endings for the husband?

Ant smugglers caught with hundreds of prized insects in Kenya

Four men have pleaded guilty in Kenya to trying to smuggle hundreds of highly sought-after ants out of the country.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), which is more used to protecting larger creatures, such as lions and elephants, has described this as a “landmark case”.

The contraband included giant African harvester ants, which are valued by some UK dealers at up to ÂŁ170 ($220) each.

This seems like the story for a pun thread, but I don’t want to drone on about it.

You know we’ll pun, pun, pun away. We’re comfortable in our hive, but we’re quite patient in our wasp-ish ways. We nuzzle and poke, but we’re careful to not make a mountain out of our little tribal hills. Best to not die in, on, or near them.

I took a shit on an anthill, once. (I don’t *think* that’s true, but I’ve pissed in many sinks, and earned $10 bucks proving the (apparently) illusive Piss-and-Walk. I didn’t give him ‘half-off’ or anything, and it wasn’t in a back alley.. it was right outside City Hall in Daejeon, South Korea. (I suppose that’s a *type* of sink…))

Well, that after-work shopping trip was somewhat productive.

I was unable to find real Mirin, had to settle for Mirin seasoning instead. What made me laugh was that I pulled out one of the bottles and looked for the country of Origin… Made in the USA. I was in the Asian Supermarket shopping for a Japanese cooking wine and I find something actually made in this country.

Daikon is also apparently exceedingly cheap.

When asking for an unusually shaped cut of meat to be halved, I should be clearer in my expectations. The partial leg of lamb was 6 pounds before they cut it. I asked for half. Half of a 6 pound portion is apparently… 4.5 pounds. They sent it through the bandsaw at the midpoint of the bone. So it was half by a metric. I guess it’s lamb all weekend for me. I plan to stew it in the slow cooker, but I need to pick the herbs, veggies and broth.

Does Daikon stew well? I’ve got a bunch.

What a good boy I am. I was outside on this beautiful day spraying weeds. Especially thistles. there are these thistles here which look like some sort of horrible space cabbage. Left unmolested, they grow five or six feet tall. Last spring it was so wet they really got away from me.

I should try to establish a pattern of doing things and shake myself out of this overwhelming sloth.

    muh brownshirt goonz!

Police arrested and stun-gunned several protesters at a town hall in Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Georgia district on Tuesday, the latest — and most extreme — example of such an event devolving into chaos in recent weeks.

Greene, a Republican and staunch supporter of President Trump, was interrupted multiple times as she addressed constituents at a community center in Acworth, Ga. on Tuesday night, speaking about Trump’s agenda, playing clips from Congressional hearings and answering pre-selected audience questions.

Starting just seconds into her remarks, and every few minutes over the next hour, some half a dozen attendees either waved signs or shouted interruptions. It is not clear what each of them said, though one chanted “Free Kilmar” — an apparent reference to the Maryland man mistakenly sent to an El Salvador prison — while others called Greene a “terrorist” and yelled expletives at her.

Who among us hasn’t wanted to taser a few protestors?

    • The Other Kevin

“mistakenly sent to an El Salvador prison”

They keep using that word. I don’t think it was an accident.

    • Bobarian LMD

Police arrested and stun-gunned several protesters?

      Probably in that order.

      Probably.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

It’s amazing to me that this is what the Dems are willing to fight for. I’m not convinced the guy is MS13, but he was here illegally. That’s grounds enough for deportation.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

The MS-13 is “important” in that there is question as to whether he can be deported specifically to El Salvador, due to his supposed gang issues, as they claim he will be killed in an El Salvadorian prison.

      • Urthona

I think he was both ms-13 and here illegally, but the Trump admin should request a conference call hearing with him to remove the El Salvador legal block.

      • DEG

I posted the Supreme Court ruling in the AM links.

Whether or not he is MS-13 is still in dispute. The government claims he is, his lawyers say he is not. It to me that whether or not he is in MS-13 is still before a lower court.

      • DEG

        It to me

        It seems to me.

I think it will productive night at work tonight…..

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        What tattoos does he have?

      • Urthona

Let me put it this way. Two sentences in the arrest report and it was pretty obvious to me he was ms-13. Not surprised multiple judges decided the same.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

The arrest report that I’ve seen going around on Twitter says he was picked up in the parking lot at Home Depot in the presence of a couple guys who are MS13. There are 3 pages to the arrest report, but the 3rd page is omitted right where it starts talking about this guy. His mug shot shows him in florescent work gear, so it sounds like they were at Home Depot waiting for a job. It doesn’t mean he’s MS13. I’d like to see the 3rd page of the report to see what they see about him. All that said, he was here illegally, which should be enough.

      • Urthona

Interesting theory. There’s also a question of how reliable the “confidential informant” was.

      • Urthona

The last page does say he was wearing gang apparel and that the informant was able to identify both his rank and moniker.

      • Suthenboy

I dont know what everyone is talking about. He is here illegally. Put him out. I dont give a damned if he belongs to the local Cotillion Club, put him out.

He has an H on 1 asscheek, and LA on the other.

He bends over and its HOLA

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

Found page 3, so that at least eases my suspicion that they were hiding something. It says he had a Chicago Bulls hat and a hoodie that represented an MS13 slogan. I also found websites predating this incident that say that horns and Bulls gear are MS13 symbols, though MS13 color is blue and red, the Bulls’ color, is banned. That said, there are black Bulls hats.

      • Urthona

Well also note that there was something with the bills and faces I didn’t white understand.

I don’t think we are even privy to all the evidence judge’s use when they make determinations.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

The bills with eyes, ears and mouth covered apparently represents “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” or more literally “see, hear, be silent”. This also is an MS13 phrase and the name of a 2019 book on MS13. https://www.pepitas.net/libro/ver

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

Page 3 also showed that there was a 4th guys for whom the police couldn’t establish a link to MS13 other than his presence there, which would argue against the idea that the cops just labeled everyone MS13 willy nilly. So unless the police report is deceptive or inaccurate, I’m reasonably convinced the guy was a gang member.

      • Urthona

        Two other points:

        1) his claim that a rival gang would kill him if he was shipped to El Salvador is sort of a tacit admission that he’s part of a gang.

        2) now showing that he was picked up with $1200 in cash and there were plastic bottles with weed in them dumped alongside the site. I’m not gonna get all bent out of shape he was selling drugs but obviously this guy was no winner.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

        1) Good point, though it could be argued that he isn’t saying a rival gang would take him out, but that an evil gang is going after this poor, innocent man.

        2) They could have been selling drugs under the guise of being guys at Home Depot looking for a job, which is plausible because they were picked up at 2:30 in the afternoon, which in my experience is long after guys have been picked up for jobs.

The legally binding pact is widely seen as a victory for the global health agency at a time when multilateral organisations like the WHO have been battered by sharp cuts in U.S. foreign funding.
“After more than three years of intensive negotiations, WHO member states took a major step forward in efforts to make the world safer from pandemics,” the health body said in a statement.
U.S. negotiators left the discussions after President Donald Trump began a 12-month process of withdrawing the U.S. – by far the WHO’s largest financial backer – from the agency when he took office in January. Given this, the U.S. would not be bound by the pact.
“This is a historic moment and a show, that with or without the U.S., countries are committed to working together and to the power of multilateralism,” Nina Schwalbe, the founder of global health think tank Spark Street Advisors, told Reuters.

We need a global socialist dictatorship.

    Disinformation agency

The State Department has shut down its office that sought to deal with misinformation and disinformation that Russia, China and Iran have been accused of spreading.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement Wednesday that he had closed what had been known as the Global Engagement Center because it had taken actions to restrict freedom of speech in the United States and elsewhere.

The center has been a frequent target of criticism from conservatives for calling out media and online reports that it said are biased or untruthful. At times, it has identified U.S. websites and social media accounts that it argued were amplifying misinformation, particularly related to the Russia-Ukraine war.

Only the State Department is qualified to distinguish between truth and propaganda.

    • The Other Kevin

Of course that’s the headline from AP. Of course.

My computer decided to die. It’s operational again, but it’s been wiped clean. (“What?! Like with a cloth?!” <– I wisely refrained from making such a comment when my bro mentioned the factory reboot.

I *should* have my old hard drive around, but I'm not going to look for it now. All my pics and music etc are, at best, adrift. Hopefully, I'll find resolution to this, but now? Yeah. Speaking of San Diego, the Cubs are down 2-1 in the sixth and this moment isn't the one to scrounge 'round for my 'memories.'

I'm not a fan of all-Cloud storage, but I'm more upset that hard drive isn't just 'there' in plain sight. Live, learn. You only live twice. (Such a shitty movie, but GODDAMN is it fun.)

      • slumbrew

And when that hard drive dies? (And it is “when”)

      • Ted S.

Oh, I’m not on my first external hard drive.

When I upgraded to a newer version of Linux Mint, I also upgraded the external hard drive.

I’m hoping everything survives until I finish paying off my car loan (the last payment is scheduled for next January) at which point I’ll have some extra money to burn.

The engine warning light has gone off. I may have stupidly added too *much* oil to it. It just got changed and in my stupidity in acting quickly but not intelligently, immediately went to ‘fill it with more oil,’ to mitigate previous issues.

I ‘only’ put in an extra ~1.5 quarts. Uh. I know you shouldn’t over-oil your car, unlike your lover, but I’m not sure the consequences of such, much like one’s slippery mistress on a water bed. I know what I *want,* but ya can’t wrench a wench without a firm hold.

Just grab ’em by the pussy, the safest bet. (I hope it’s difficult to get hold.)

The current was stronger than the usual at the swimming hole today. I guess there’s a delay between when the rain falls and when it gushes out the spring that feeds the hole. Or maybe it had something to do with the tide. I swam 100 yards freestyle without resting or stopping. That’s better than when I was 13 and training for the mile swim at Boy Scout camp. Yay me.

Today’s wildlife included blue catfish, minnows, herons, woodpeckers, turtles, and squirrels. No gators or manatees to be seen this time. I’ve also seen armadillos, deer, and water snakes there. A wild boar wandered through town once, but I don’t think they live near the swimming hole. A house on the way there has a 15-foot-tall skeleton statue next to flagpole for some reason.

My internet hasn’t gone down in over 24 hours. That hasn’t happened in a couple months at least.

    • Tres Cool

So you wont be needing the Cal score ?

      • Derpetologist

That was Playa Manhattan’s shtick. He’s been scarce for a while. I met him, Jesse and some other Cali glibs at the Purple Orchid in El Segundo. That was in the spring of 2015. Good times.

  15. The Late P Brooks

You’re just not hitting it hard enough

David Hogg, a controversial Democratic National Committee vice chair, is pledging to upend Democratic primaries by funding candidates who will challenge “ineffective, asleep-at-the-wheel” Democrats.

The move puts Hogg, the now 25-year-old who first gained national stature as an outspoken survivor of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, on a collision course with his own party and some Democratic House members.

    ——-

Hogg burst onto the political scene as a survivor of the high school shooting in Parkland, Fla., in 2018 and was elected as a vice chair of the DNC in February, over the objection of moderates who complained about his history of far-left rhetoric. Traditionally, DNC vice chairs are largely ceremonial roles with little public attention and even less power. But Hogg is testing the limits of the position — and the DNC’s willingness to stomach internal dissent.

Hogg argued that backing primary challengers is in line with what he ran on for his DNC role. “I am not in this position because I want to bank my political capital. I just want change. I want to see a stronger Democratic Party,” he said.

By all means, let’s have more radical socialist authoritarian candidates.

    • Evan from Evansville

      Bless their hearts.

They have no awareness and are sad-sack pups who can only double-down on their nonsense. Useful Idiots being idiotically useful. But now? Uh, can someone in Lefty Land read the room? Even Bill fuckin’ Maher is at least ‘attempting’ to lean towards the ‘center.’

Absurd bugs fluttering in an inwardly mirrored bottle. They keep hitting their heads on the glass, unable to realize their impediment. I’ll admit, it *is* fun to watch. Rewarding, cathartic. Pleasuring. (They need cash and I’m willing to negotiate. They won’t get the full $20, but we’ll see how we settle. I’ll certainly tip for good service, but only if it’s more than the tip. (Standards, yo.))

    • Gustave Lytton

Excellent. Strengthen party structure by threatening the officeholders of your party. That will end well.

    • creech

Some of these far-left nutjobs will win their primaries. And the coming Blue Wave in 2026 will sweep more into office where they can join The Squad in trying to destroy traditional American values.

      • R C Dean

Not saying there won’t be a Blue Wave, since 2026 is still an age away in political time. But I see no sign of Trump’s popularity waning. Now, the Congressional Repubs could well have an apathetic base due to their rather lackluster performance so far with control of Congress.

    • Derpetologist

Camera Hogg burst onto the scene like dough from a pierced biscuit can.

Corey DeAngelis appeared on the Tom Woods show recently.

It’s about a 40 minute talk. While DeAngelis is happy with the Trump Executive Order on the Department of Education, he mentions actually ending the DoE will need Congressional action. He also says that even if the DoE is done away with, the school choice fight will need to continue at the state level. Woods and DeAngelis wrap with some talk of things like pay for performance for teachers.

Wife of deported ‘Maryland man’ reveals horrors she experienced at his hands in scathing police report

a 2021 petition for protection from domestic violence filled out by Abrego Garcia’s wife, Jennifer Vasquez, which was obtained first by DailyMail.com, states that the alleged MS-13 member beat his wife multiple times over the years.

In November 2020, Abrego Garcia hit Vasquez with his work boots, and in August 2020 he hit her in the eye, causing her to get a black eye, according to her petition.

That same day Abrego Garcia started driving quickly, scaring his wife, as their one-year-old was in the back seat. ‘In the recording you can hear him yelling, insulting me, driving extreme fast,’ Vasquez told authorities.

Later that day she left the residence they shared after being ‘afraid to be close to him,’ her request continued.

Then in May 2021, after an argument at a gas station, the Salvadorian migrant punched and scratched his wife, ‘leaving me bleeding,’ Vasquez wrote.

Democrats couldn’t wait for Trump to deport someone more likable? Unforced errors on each side are always flinging back and forth. This country’s politics are so lame.

    Something I re-discovered for a musical choice.
    Surprise, surprise

      There’s a band name I haven’t seen in forever.

Really just know them from https://youtu.be/eiXtyVhCzLA

      • Timeloose

That’s the song that made me buy the album.

      • slumbrew

        It’s a banger.

How’s the rest of the album? The one you linked is solid.

I do enjoy the tongue-in-cheekitude, but that’s objectionably awful music. Yikes.

        De gustibus non est disputandum

  20. Timeloose

Pretty dammed good. Kind of industrial hard rock. Pretty complex musically with two bass players.
