I’m going to link something here I came across on TwiX that I thought was crazy, then I began looking it up. (TW: Twitter)
This is my review of Abomination Brewing Company Fogsickle Double India Pale Ale:

So for those of you that chose not to click the link, the post is question is:
for years ive been puzzled by the uniquely american obsession with disgusting bitter IPA beer. but i finally figured it out. bitter taste receptors are affected by serotonin in the brain. the american IPA craze is literally caused by the proliferation of SSRI anti depressants
H/T to whoever Doomer is.
Now it problems shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to hear people my age tend to be on some kind of mind altering substance. For our purposes I’m talking about the legal ones.
19.1%
The percentage of older adults (over age 60) who took antidepressants in the past month. Antidepressant use increases with age. These medications are used by 16.6 percent of people ages 40 to 59, 7.8 percent of those ages 20 to 39, and 3.4 percent of adolescents ages 12 to 19.

Now that link is data from over ten years ago so the age groups they’re talking about are a bit skewed. This one however, is a bit more straightforward with the age groups in question its just not a source I would cite on a paper.
According to respondents, 61% of millennials take prescription medicine. When broken down by gender, millennial women (68%) report taking more prescription medication than men (54%).
Of those who take prescription medication, 31% report it being for anti-anxiety, followed by 28% who take antidepressants, and 18% who take prescriptions for birth control. With the oldest millennial now 41-years-old, it may be no surprise,
…Seems oddly low for birth control, but they are supporting my biases. Also supporting my biases is my general perception of people that like IPA fall into two groups: a skinny blond, like my friend’s sister who I was surprised to learn had a thing for IPA. She wanted nothing more but talk about something other than her mom or my friend getting married at the rehearsal dinner. So we had a few beers and NOTHING ELSE HAPPENED. The other? This guy over here.
This is just stereotyping millennials, right? No, they did market research into the matter, and this is most of the reason you see so many IPAs on the store shelves. What about everyone else? Turns out the other generations like regular ass beer.
All of this is relevant because according to this study here, human taste thresholds are altered by drugs that regulate serotonin and noradrenaline. Depending on the type of taste they were looking to test, these neurotransmitters affected the perception of sourness, bitterness, and sweetness.
Which kind of explains everything when you think about it. Millennial hipsters love IPA because its the only thing they can taste, being they’re chemically whittled down to the nub.
I don’t know what to say here. I am not opposed to innovation but if the best you have is combining two awful things in an attempt to make it less awful maybe stick with what works. Just when I thought, it couldn’t get worse. This is everything I hate about the modern brewing industry. Sour. IPA. Subliminal Satanic imagery. Gentleman and the 6-8 ladies, I am here to tell you it can in fact get worse. This has the consistency of frozen orange juice concentrate after its thawed out—except its grapefruit. Do you have that in your head? Good, now add peaches and marshmallow.
I am happy to report I did not have any violent thoughts or feelings after drinking this, nor did I have any urge to reach for any of the several firearms in my home. Abomination Brewing Company Fogsickle Double India Pale Ale: 1.5/5

Shudder.
Thankfully because of the missed drop time I did not have to have this beer in my memory while making breakfast.
Too bad lunch is around the corner
I was on an antidepressant for years. It was enough to keep me hypomanic (still productive but depressed enough to rite gud). I ranted in a thoroughly justified way in my drug dealer’s office over something thoroughly maddening, then she doubled my dose. I hit manic pretty damned quick and ended up nearly destroying my family financially. She knew she fucked up.
Fast forward many years. I’ve gone through menopause and had ulcer surgery. I get the sneaking suspicion the anti-depressants are doing nothing because they’re enteric-coated and not being digested. Also, no estrogen. I’m not depressed. My life just sucks. I’m no longer creative. I go off them. No noticeable difference for several months until I realize I’m crying more and I’m starting to get interested in my writing again.
I’ll take it!
Perhaps your doc misdiagnosed. Never give a bipolar person an anti-depressant w/o an accompanying mood stabilizer.
Unless they want that patient to be either awake for a month, or sitting in a closet sucking on a gun barrel.
Sounds like a net positive!
I feel so blessed to have boring brain chemistry.
Hear, hear.

Boy that sounds awful.
It’s beer. By definition it’s awful. :-p
Imdid not care for it but others have expressed positive about it.
And yet it somehow got (barely) over 1 star.
being they’re chemically whittled down to the nub
That sounds like how a buddy described antidepressants generally.
Also, the wisdom of consuming alcoholic beverages while medicating. 🤦♂️
When I was a teenager, I was at one of our underage drinking parties, and some girl said to her friend, “Hey your anxiety med says on the bottle you’re not supposed to drink with it!” She replies, “Yea, but that just means you’ll get a buzz!”
Ah, the days before “consequences” were a thing…
A Pierce County man expected to be deported to Vietnam. Instead, ICE routed him to South Sudan
Well that certainly sounds like a dick move by the Trump administration. What teenage indiscretion lead to this?
Oh…
“Washington Man”
A Pierce County manConvicted murderer expected to be deported to Vietnam. Instead, ICE routed him to South SudanI’m surprised there isn’t a movement to restore John Demjanjuk’s citizenship. He’d fit right in with current year.
That reporting is crap. Deporting him to South Sudan, instead of Vietnam, is also crap.

At least I can respect their honesty.

Anecdata – 0 meds, ever (OK other than like dental surgery for a day or two), very fond of IPAs, very bitter ones at that. Yeah, yeah, population level doesn’t imply any one individual case, you frequentist butthole. But anyway.
Two scripts daily. 1 to regulate the ticker, another for…I forgot and occasionally forget this one and nothing bad happens.
Good afternoon Mr. Biden.
I like a pale ale. I’m enjoying a 35 IBU out of Flagstaff right now ( Dark Sky Rainy Daze). Some malt, nice balance. Much more IBU than that and I start to nope out, unless it’s very well done indeed.
That one isn’t bad, but I have a bias for Flagstaff. Eventually I might die there.
*clears throat*
Got some bad news for you there Putrid…
(I’m right there with you.)
I probably deserve that.
That was self directed, not at you! i.e. my experience isn’t necessarily representative of population level, but I was implying it was. Really, mainly I just wanted to say “frequentist butthole”; it just sort of rolls off the tongue. So to speak.
This has the consistency of frozen orange juice concentrate after its thawed out—except its grapefruit. Do you have that in your head? Good, now add peaches and marshmallow.
*metaphorically dumps beer on ground*
I never found IPAs to taste bitter, but I only ever drank good ones (e.g. Bells Two Hearted, Evolution Brewing #3, Great Lakes Burning River.)
Bipolar runs in both sides of my family. I probably could get a diagnosis and drugs for it, but I don’t want to. Sherlock Holmes was bipolar, and if booze, pipe tobacco, and cocaine was good enough for him…
He was no doubt a libertarian. They just hadn’t invented mexicans and weed at that point in the UK.
Butt they knew butt sex.
Was he in the British Navy?
Everything I’ve had from Bell’s has been great. Two Hearted is my favorite, but I’m trying not to spend TOO much on booze these days, so I usually settle for Yuengling. I can’t do the ultra-cheap adjunct macrobrews though.
I’ve had a couple of misses from Bell’s (their Cherry Stout comes to mind), but overall they were always solid. I lament that it’s no longer in the family now.
Why isn’t there a mass transit line with scheduled serviceto the top of Mt Everest? Ridiculous that people have to climb for hours to get there.
It is kinda ridiculous that people climb it.
Not really; people like to get high.

Sports Illustrated swimsuit model and former LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne said in a TikTok video Friday that she’s fearful she is being stalked in airports.
The 22-year-old, who has built a large social media following, said that whenever she is at an airport, she encounters what she described as “at least 10 middle-aged men” who harass her and attempt to get her autograph.
“There’s a group of autograph seekers who are able to know private flight information,” Dunne said in a statement Saturday to NBC News. “I am not the only female athlete who experiences this. It’s scary because they simply don’t take no for an answer.”
It kind of goes with the attention whoring, doesn’t it?
It’s nothing specific to female athletes – Carolla talks about this now and then; the paparazzi and autograph collectors/sellers are waiting at many airports. They’re clearly paying off airline employees to let them know when people of interest are flying.
My daughter’s friend is all sorts of tatted up and irritated by the types that ask about her tattoos and offer to show her their tattoos. I have commented to my daughter that those are the types drawn to tattoos. What do I know?
“Don’t look at my tatts!” seems . . . confused.

I’ve been tossing in a couple blackberries along with my lime. I let them soak in the gin for a bit before drinking.
I wish I had access to more bitter American IPAs, Romanian IPAs are sweet and suck
Does BrewDog distribute over there? I know they have bars through Europe, and I believe they still are operating the old Stone brewing location in Munich. Most of their IPAs that I’ve had would fall under the American style.
“61% of millennials take prescription medicine”
JFC. These people are in the prime of life.
So, I’ve started thinking about getting a kegerator for the house. I mean, what could possibly go wrong with having two microbrews on tap 24/7?
“ what could possibly go wrong with having two microbrews on tap 24/7?”
House guests.
I would have bet you’d go with ‘carbs’.
Bah, Sean beat me to it,
I have a three tap system. My waistline could have answered the question pretty easily. I have not brewed or put a new keg on tap since the lockdowns. I do not need 15 gallons of beer on the ready at all times.
You’re retired aren’t you? If that’s right, then nothing.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX company town is reportedly notifying residents they may ‘lose the right to continue’ using their property amid zoning push
——-
The newly approved city of Starbase is apparently looking to ramp up development, telling some residents they “may lose the right to continue” using their property as a result of a proposed zoning ordinance for a mixed-use space, according to a memo published by CNBC. Starbase is home to SpaceX’s Starship launch site, and the majority of its residents are employees of Elon Musk’s company.
Starbase, the fledgling Texas city home to Elon Musk’s SpaceX, appears to be making rapid moves to advance its development.
The city has notified some residents it is considering a new zoning ordinance that may require residents to lose access to their property, according to a city memo published by CNBC.
Musk is going to steal their land!
According to the notice sent out, Starbase is looking at a formal mixed use zoning policy. Some people might face restrictions on previous uses, whatever those may be. What does that mean? junkyards? Motocross tracks? Speakeasies? Open pit gravel mines? We just know Musk is evil.
ps- zoning is dumb.
Space brothel.

Throw some 30″ tires on a Honda Fit? Sure, why not? Just be prepared to put a clutch in it every 5,000 miles.
+ 2 wheel bearings.
THIS.
I was wondering how much the steering geometry changed, and how its eating up control arms, tie rods, and bearings.
As someone who doesn’t know too much about cars, is that just due to the additional weight of the bigger wheels putting more stress on the clutch while it’s engaged?
In addition to all the steering geometry the larger wheels gear “up” the output ratio. Speedometer says 50 and you’re going about 75.
Also, anecdotally, I’ve heard that the larger wheels can actually rip the rotors off of the axle in severe braking situations.
As someone who doesn’t know too much about cars, is that just due to the additional weight of the bigger wheels putting more stress on the clutch while it’s engaged?
A taller tire raises the effective final drive ratio. That would probably be like starting off in third gear.
Can confirm. 1992 tracker stock was a 215/75 and I went up to 235/75.

According to the article, he just put big shims on the struts. Piece of cake.
*If you shimmed the subframes at the same time, you’d basically be doing a body lift, but there would still be a ton of work involved.
It’s actually kind of cute, but you’d really need to stuff an Element/CRX drive train under it to make it work.

That looks like fun.
I suspect what’s really going on is the industry pumped that shit out during their prime drinking years. People drink what they’re familiar with.
If that was true, Malört would be a sales winner.
Malort did expand their distribution footprint.
If they follow historic trends, in the next 10-15 years, they’ll start shifting to “Session IPAs” (you know, what used to be called Pale Ales) and lagers.
As long as they don’t screw with Dead Guy Ale.
Wait. What? I had no idea that’s what became of pale ales. I love pale ale but can’t stand IPAs.
I took my daughter to a gun shop to see if there might be one she likes, but also to assuage me of the HK USP bug. This shop has a table full of HK’s and has them wired to the table so you can just walk up and try it out.
Anyways, she found the Walther PDP-F to be a bit unwieldy, compared to the HK VSPsk. Overall, preferring the Glock 43x to both.
A Usp c is on the short list of guns I got rid of.
You can do some good shooting with a Glock 43x/48. My carry gun is a Glock 48 with an SCD, direct milled Holoson EPS Carry 6, and Talon Pro grip tape..
