“”The man who desecrated the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by lighting a cigarette with the memorial flame was arrested in Paris for violating a burial site, tomb, urn, or monument erected in memory of the dead. He was taken into custody and admitted the facts,” Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau wrote on X….

“Walking on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Lighting his cigarette with the eternal flame. This is not a mere misstep: it is a desecration,” she wrote on X. “France will never tolerate the tarnishing of the memory of those who died for her. Never.””

    Sounds a bit hyperbolic.

      • Not Adahn

It could be possible (I know it is in NY) to gerrymander the state legislature districts to get a more lopsided result there. I have no idea if there are any (R) in the MA leg, but I assume there must be at least one RINO.

      • WTF

In states like MA and NJ, most of the Republican state legislators are RINOs.

      • rhywun

To be fair, the immediate Dem response to this logic (the GOP is too incompetent to win any seat) is not wrong. In one-Party states and localities, the opposition has often been shut out so long that there is nobody “electable” who can get the attention of voters.

      • WTF

Example – New Jersey’s district 5 used to be solidly Republican, but the 2020 gerrymander took care of that and now it is solidly Democrat.

    • R C Dean

That is interesting. My eyeball review is that on that methodology, the Dems would lose 37 seats in their states, and pick up 31 in Repub states.

      • juris imprudent

Yep net 6 to the Repubs to get proper “proportional” representation.

      • R C Dean

There’s a little bit of an arbitrary/philosophical issue lurking here. If a state that is 60% Blue has no Red Senators, nobody says nuffin’ about 40% of the voters being disenfranchised. So why is everybody all worked up when that state has no Red Reps? It pretty inherent in first-past-the-post elections that the losing part(ies) get nothing, regardless of how small the margin was.

      • rhywun

That is not the purpose of a Senate, was always my interpretation.

But then the states went and made their Senates all about “proportional representation” thus throwing their original concept out the window. What is even the purpose of a state senate any more? It’s just a smaller duplicate of a state house/assembly.

      • juris imprudent

I used the scare quotes proportional there RC, and yes, the sneaking presumption is parliamentary – with the majority party being “in charge” of the legislative and executive functions.

rhy – state senate is the dumbest thing we have in our entire political lexicon. Absolutely no need for that at the state level.

      • (((Jarflax

Without a State Senate you remove an important promotion level for political careers! What’s a poor State Rep supposed to do? Jump all the way up to Congress?

Hmm, I wonder if it would have a salutary effect if we renamed all elective offices. Leave them the same powers but name them more appropriately.

        Representative could become Lowly Thief

      • DEG

rhy – state senate is the dumbest thing we have in our entire political lexicon. Absolutely no need for that at the state level.

In the Reynolds v Sims era, sure.

Before Reynolds v Sims some states had their state senates made up of one senator per county. Their legislatures were analogous to the US Congress with one chamber whose representation was determined by population and the other by geography to keep urban areas from running roughshod over rural areas.

      • juris imprudent

Counties aren’t sovereign, so that’s why I say bullshit on that. Under the AoC, Congress was one vote per state – but each state had a body of popular representation.

      • UnCivilServant

The Articles of Confederation were also determined to be unworkable in practicality, which is why the same people turned around and went “Lets try this again”

      • DEG

        Counties aren’t sovereign

Irrelevant to how a state sets up its legislature. Reynolds v Sims is bullshit.

      • juris imprudent

        Reynolds v Sims is bullshit.

        Never meant to imply otherwise.

So let’s go back to what a Senate originally meant – the body for the aristocrats. That never made a lick of sense in this country, and the U.S. Senate only made sense when it was to assure equal representation of the States. The 17th Amdt, like all other Progressive bullshit, screwed that up.

      • dbleagle

        Appropriate.

    • robc

While I like the methodology, using information I know, I see a problem with it.

It says KY should have 2 D seats, instead of 1. Which, yeah, they are right. But you would have to gerrymander (in the traditional, weird shape sense) to make that happen. D voters are concentrated in two areas: Louisville and Lexington. Louisville has a compact D district within Jefferson County. Lexington makes their district competitive, but as Fayette County isn’t large enough for a house district, it is joined by surrounding R stronghold counties. To get 2 D districts, you would have to worm up I-75 and collect up small D enclaves in Northern Ky maybe?

My preferred method to fix the gerrymander “problem” is to make all-states single district with single transferrable votes.

      Examples: Wyoming, nothing changes.
Colorado, with 8 districts, means a candidate would have to get at 11.2% of the vote to win a seat.
Kentucky, with 6, would mean 14.3%.
      California, less than 2%.

It would basically lead to proportional representation within each state. CA would be hilarious, every nutjob movement would manage to get some seats. Libertarians, Greens, Communists would have representatives from CA.

My vote preference order would start with NoCo libertarians, work around to other libertarians around the state, with Denver libertarians bringing up the rear (well, Denver Ds bringing up the very rear). I could see the possibility of a NoCo R getting ahead of the last Denver L even.

      • rhywun

How does that square with the intended purpose of those positions being “local representation”?

      • juris imprudent

Denver Ds bringing up the very rear

        You know they’d like that.

      • robc

How does that square with the intended purpose of those positions being “local representation”?

If you want local representation, they put the local candidates at the top of your ballot. If I really care about that, I can put my top 3 as a Larimer County L, then a Larimer County R, then a Larimer County D. But I would prefer a Weld County L before the other two myself. And a western slope L before the R and D for that matter. But IF I care about local representation, I can vote that way.

And unless we expand the US House to about 4000 seats, we aint getting local representation anyway.

      • creech

State wide districts is the only way that the 35-40% GOP vote in New England would ever get any of the seats. Mass. and Conn. have 14 seats, 100% Democrats. Proportionally, GOP would have at least 4 or 5 of them.

      • robc

And to follow up on my last post, I can see a situation where I would prefer a local candidate of an opposing party over a candidate of “my” party from somewhere else. But, lets be real, most people would prefer to be represented by someone they chose (even if way down their ballot) over someone local they dislike.

In my system, everyone except the bottom 1/(n+1), where n=number of districts, is represented by someone their vote counted for. In Wyoming, you could still have 49.9% unrepresented, but in CA, virtually everyone gets a representative. Those unrepresented would be mostly people who didnt care to fill out their vote order deep enough.

      • rhywun

expand the US House to about 4000 seats

That is what we SHOULD be doing. I know it sounds scary to add another 3500 or so wastrels but at least it will dilute their individual power in addition to restoring the original purpose of the House.

      • robc

I just took 2020 census and applied floor(pop/30000,1) to each state, to fit the max representatives under Article 1.

Total of exactly 11000 seats. From CA at 1317 to WY at 19. CO has 192.

      • robc

Breaking that down further, Larimer County, CO would have 11.9 districts, of those about 5.5 would be in Fort Collins and 2.5 in Loveland, with the rest in smaller cities and rural parts of the county. No other city in the county is big enough for an entire district.

I like ROBC’s idea, and what with the 19th the whole original system was destroyed anyways. And with this we don’t really need to add 11K more idiots to the Federal tit.

Also, if you want (and everyone says it, so you know it is true*) more centrists and moderate reps, getting rid of gerrymandering is the way to go. As long as you carve up the state so only your team can win, you only get the most radical as there is no need to swing to the middle.

*only the public wants this, not the parties.

Lol – the Howard Stern article references some of his recent “high profile” interviews and they are with other SiriusXM talent, which are probably contractually obligated to sit down with him. Also, references his contract not being renewed because of his politics and not ratings, riggghhhttt. Stern has grown into a non-interesting hack is why he is going to be offered a pittance of his former salary. The contamination in the well would likely come from the pump impeller which is plastic, the pipe, which if under 300’ deep is likely a plastic one piece pipe, the pile tape in the case of a pump hung on metal pipe, the liner for the well which is PVC, or the sample container which is likely plastic.

Ky basically mandates that. The state supremes shot down a plan 30-40 years ago, and now require that a minimum number of counties be split. Within that, there are still lots of games to be played, but it stops the worst excesses of that bullshit.

For example, the last time the Ds had any control, they split Warren County 4 ways on the state senate map. It counted as 1 county being split for the rules, but it was designed to split up the R power in the county, as opposed to the D control of the city of Bowling Green.

Yet the Florida verdict is notable because it’s one of the first major legal decisions over ADAS technology that has gone against Tesla. Other claims have been dismissed or settled by the automaker.

Tesla will appeal the decision. During the case, its attorneys hung the blame on the driver, McGee, for choosing not to monitor the car on Autopilot while he grabbed for his cell phone.

Later, the automaker said in a rare statement that it “only works to set back automotive safety and jeopardize Tesla’s and the entire industry’s efforts to develop and implement lifesaving technology.” (This is, for context, the line Tesla has used for years against Autopilot critics; the company claims it is safer than a human driver or will be eventually, and so setting its progress back will only lead to more fatal crashes as humans stay behind the wheel instead of robots.)

Instead of excusing this as an accident or going after the driver, Gaston County District Attorney Travis Page had the parents arrested, charging them with involuntary manslaughter and child neglect.

The parents, Samuele and Jessica Ivey Jenkins, didn’t push their son into the street, nor did they allow him to roam the streets without knowing his whereabouts. The charges came after his parents let him and his older brother (10) walk about two blocks home without an adult to get a sandwich. And for that, the nanny state arrested both parents, charging them with heinous crimes, and forced them into jail on a $1.5 million bond, which was later reduced….

They took a plea deal in June, receiving credit for 25 days already spent in jail. Both received a suspended sentence with probation, Sameule for 36 months and Jessica for 30 months, for negligent child abuse leading to serious injury. They must now take parenting classes and pay court and lawyer fees.

Instead of being able to grieve the tragic loss of their son, these parents were forced to fight for their freedom, all because they let their sons walk two blocks away from home. This is something that most children should be allowed and capable of doing on their own.”
