After the first round of deportations, Team Orange Man claims 1.2 million immigrants are no longer part of the US workforce.

Venezuelan Presidente Maduro

I get human interest pieces are supposed to make you forget what you know, and go with what you feel, but could they find a less useless business?

Why can’t our own senators do this? I would love to see Lizzy get her ass kicked.

“I wanted to put a bullet between the eyes of every panda that wouldn’t fuck to save its own species.”

Maduro is getting a bit froggy, with the US Navy on his shores I don’t blame him.

Perhaps this story is connected?

First they make a metal sea shanty, now they make a metal… whatever this is. Its fantastic.

Didn’t say I wanted it to be US sponsored to start with.

Venezuela needs to fight its own way out of socialism and Maduro is or has run the country into the ground (finished the job started by his predecessor). Libya was a shithole fake tribal country being held together by a strongman. So I don’t think the two situations are otherwise comparable.

Cuba’s worse off than Venezuela and has been for longer. Authoritarian regimes and civil wars to overthrow them often last longer than expected.

Libya has fewer people than NYC or Cuba. You don’t need to be much of strongman to hold on to power in such a place, especially if it’s tribal/sectarian.

The people of a country living under tyranny should do nothing because it’s going to be messy and complicated and dangerous.

  8. Timeloose

I attempted to make a cash withdrawal from a local branch of my bank from an account I’ve had for over 20 years.

I’ve not done this since a Vegas trip over 10 years ago. I use the ATM or checks for most things.

The bank told me they couldn’t withdraw ~$7k because they didn’t have the funds. They told me to come back next week.

I call bullshit, it’s about 7 people getting their paychecks cashed. Possibly I’m wrong and the banks statistically figure out what they need to hold at each branch per week.

I will keep this in mind and pull some larger amounts out in the near future. If there was an emergency and atms or banks were rushed, there would not be any cash to spare for weeks.

    • The Other Kevin

They don’t have your cash, Timeloose. It’s in Sloopy’s house, and KK’s mobile home, and TOK’s business!

      • Timeloose

I know they don’t have all of my money for withdrawals at any given time, but if less than $10k would clean them out for a week, then a little emergency would cripple the local banks and atms.

I was able to find another branch that isn’t as cash poor.

I have about 3,000 in cash in safes at home. The Derecho shut down electricity and telephones for a couple of weeks back in 2020. No business could process anything but cash transactions. I learned from that.

      • slumbrew

There was a big thread on Bogleheads a while back over “do you keep cash at home?” – it was split between “yes, obviously” and “no, you people are fools who should have every penny invested – why would you ever need significant cash?”

Someone pithily observed the thread was divided into “people who have lived through an extended power outage and those who have not.”

(yes, I have cash on hand)

      • Rat on a train

I have to hide cash from Mrs Rat. She always needs a little cash for something. When I need cash I find my wallet empty.

I have kept more than $4K in cash at home ever since the big banking kerfuffle in ‘08. I knew a bank president, and the things he had to say about cash reserves and how razor close we came to a bank run were sobering.

      • DrOtto

Yeah, I lived in Houston when Hurricane Rita hit. Biggest issue we had was several days without power. Cash was king for those several days.

But no way would it take a week. Next day we would have it ready for you.

      • slumbrew

$7k also doesn’t seem like a huge amount to have on hand – I guess if it’s a tiny place…

      • The Other Kevin

To be fair, it was out of the trunk of a Chevy Nova, and the guy also had a lot of gold chains for sale.

      • Sensei

We had lots of cash businesses make deposits. We actually shipped out cash.

      • Sensei

I remember one branch I worked with a roller rink. They and the bank did business for years. They would drop off grocery bags stuffed with cash.

We would count it all day between customers.

      • Timeloose

It was 3:30 and they close at 5:00. Come back tomorrow was the worst I expected. A week was due to them getting their cash delivery for the week.

        Again crazy.

      • R C Dean

So they had just gotten their cash delivery and didn’t have $7K?

    • Gender Traitor

Good grief! $7k isn’t even enough to require a Currency Transaction Report under the stupid, annoying Bank Secrecy Act. 🙄

If you do make some large withdrawals to make sure you have green foldy money on hand in an emergency, you may want to make sure the transactions aren’t too large and/or close together so it doesn’t look as if you’re “structuring.” (Also 🙄)

      • (((Jarflax

you may want to make sure the transactions aren’t too large and/or close together so it doesn’t look as if you’re “structuring.”

Ok, I apologize for sounding like I am jumping on you GT, but this is not right, and I really wish we had a delete button because I’d be advising you to spam that sucker right now. If you take out, or deposit money in multiple transactions in order to avoid a CTR, that is Structuring, so changing the timing or size of transactions to avoid looking like structuring is itself structuring. It has nothing to do with what you intend with the money, it is purely a matter of doing the transactions piecemeal to avoid the CTR. If you want more than $10,000, you should do it as a single transaction and let the bank file the CTR.

      • creech

Hard to believe a bank didn’t have $7k. Why just last week, robbers hit an armored car guy taking one bag into a small strip mall grocery store in Philly. Supposedly that bag contained $700,000! If a grocery can carry that load of cash, then a bank shouldn’t be far behind

      • Fourscore

My bank will only let me transfer 5K a day to another account. I owed some money, it took several days to get my bill paid.

      • Suthenboy

      • Gustave Lytton

SARs can be filed (and even are required to be filed), even if the total doesn’t add up over $10K. Not having a valid or adequate reason is enough and a bank will always CYA if they’re competent.

      • Gender Traitor

I don’t think you actually disagreed with her.

Heated arguments where there isn’t a disagreement are peak Glib.

More than 1.2 million immigrants disappeared from the labor force from January through the end of July, according to preliminary Census Bureau data analyzed by the Pew Research Center. That includes people who are in the country illegally as well as legal residents (the AP claimed, without evidence).

    Fixed it for ’em.

    • R.J.

OTD in history: 90 years ago today, the Great Labor Day Hurricane cut through the middle of the Florida Keys as the most powerful storm ever at landfall in the U.S.

A few hundred World War I veterans were huddled near Islamorada working on a road project for the Civilian Conservation Corps. As the hurricane approached, a train was sent down from Miami to take them to safety. But because it was a government project, there were hours of delays before the train backed up from Homestead to pick them up. By then it was too late, and the train was knocked asunder by the storm surge.

About 400 bodies were eventually recovered — the total number of victims will be forever unknown. At first the dead were taken to a mortuary in Miami, but after a while, putrefaction set in, and bodies were just gathered up and burned.

Most of those cremated remains are in a vault under the Hurricane Memorial located just off US-1 near Lower Matecumbe Key. The memorial itself is a tasteful coral and limestone tablet featuring an Art Deco-style bas relief of palm trees bending in the tremendous winds.

And because that was a government project, they chiseled the trees backwards — bending into the wind.

    • The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

Are the backward trees Commentary or an accident?

      • Shpip

Were I to hazard a guess, the artist was commissioned to do the bas relief, and did.

Then someone else decided that the monument should face southwest (where the art looks best under the natural sunlight), not considering that the palms were mis-bent.

“It is my earnest hope, and indeed the hope of all mankind, that from this solemn occasion a better world shall emerge out of the blood and carnage of the past — a world founded upon faith and understanding, a world dedicated to the dignity of man and the fulfillment of his most cherished wish for freedom, tolerance, and justice.”
