Another Tuesday where all the meetings are front loaded. Such is the curse of living in the west while everyone you work with is on Eastern Time. Still got my links up though.

After the first round of deportations, Team Orange Man claims 1.2 million immigrants are no longer part of the US workforce.

I get human interest pieces are supposed to make you forget what you know, and go with what you feel, but could they find a less useless business?
Why can’t our own senators do this? I would love to see Lizzy get her ass kicked.
“I wanted to put a bullet between the eyes of every panda that wouldn’t fuck to save its own species.”
Maduro is getting a bit froggy, with the US Navy on his shores I don’t blame him.
Perhaps this story is connected?
First they make a metal sea shanty, now they make a metal… whatever this is. Its fantastic.

I hope Maduro ends up raped by a bayonet like another tinpot dictator did.
How’d that work out for everyone?
QUIET, YOU!
Didn’t say I wanted it to be US sponsored to start with.
Venezuela needs to fight its own way out of socialism and Maduro is or has run the country into the ground (finished the job started by his predecessor). Libya was a shithole fake tribal country being held together by a strongman. So I don’t think the two situations are otherwise comparable.
How Many Countries Are De Facto One-Party States? (About 110 out of 194)
https://platedlizard.blogspot.com/2023/11/how-many-countries-are-de-facto-one.html
Cuba’s worse off than Venezuela and has been for longer. Authoritarian regimes and civil wars to overthrow them often last longer than expected.
Libya has fewer people than NYC or Cuba. You don’t need to be much of strongman to hold on to power in such a place, especially if it’s tribal/sectarian.
The people of a country living under tyranny should do nothing because it’s going to be messy and complicated and dangerous.
Got it.
More like: it’s their problem, not ours, and we should stay out of it.
blah blah entangling alliances herp derp non-intervention…

Heated arguments where there isn’t a disagreement are peak Glib.
QUIET, YOU!!
Heated arguments where there isn’t a disagreement are peak Glib.
Wrong, jerk!
The trouble with that is that when it happens you find out that tin-pot piece of shit was the best that culture had to offer.
Post Gaddafi open-air slave markets, tribal warlords and rampant cannibalism for the win.
Empanadas as a last meal?
Mmm yes please.
You didn’t say first.
I’m going to back away slowly, and stand over there…a safe distance away.
Dos enlaces?
No idea what you’re talking about.

Promoted from the dedthred:
Well, well. Somebody went to (former?) Fed Gov Lisa Cook’s “primary residence” in Ann Arbor. Guess what?
She’s renting it out.
https://x.com/pulte/status/1962883351901012407
So just where does she live, anyway?
It’s not a big deal because everybody does it.
(SPOILER ALERT: Don’t try it because you’re not part of that “everybody”.)
Does she even exist?
Speaking of Maduro, some ppl did a thing.
[Not a violation of the 30-minute rule since an update to a linked situation.]
Shot out a drug carrying boat? Trust Trump to have to one up the idea of drugs falling out.
All those drugs in the water?
This right here is how we get Sharknado.
Well, at least Mexico has their booming fentanyl business that they can fall back on.
Twice the bad news, twice the fun!
Tricksy Switzers sabotaging my joke!
I said, THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE
The scuffle broke out between two high-ranking senators toward the end of a session that had included a heated debate on the possibility of US military intervention in the country.
We used to be a proper country
Today our political leaders play-argue for the cameras and then go out for cocktails together after. It’s theater. Uniparty and all that.
Last panda not owned by China?

Free Tibet! Free The Pandas!
Free the Glutens!
Look, it’s a natural function, and I am happy your bowels are healthy, but can we have a little less discussion of things shooting out of butts, on boats or not!
I don’t know much, but I’m pretty sure the gluten-free swing is largely bullshit.
Pandas are fucking useless. Adorable bastards who don’t give a shit about their own species. It may have been Carlin or similar, but it’s correct: If pandas were delicious, they’d be the most populous ‘bear’ on the planet. (Silence, UCS. I addressed it.)
I have heard that manatee is amazing. Sadly I will never know.
I attempted to make a cash withdrawal from a local branch of my bank from an account I’ve had for over 20 years.
I’ve not done this since a Vegas trip over 10 years ago. I use the ATM or checks for most things.
The bank told me they couldn’t withdraw ~$7k because they didn’t have the funds. They told me to come back next week.
I call bullshit, it’s about 7 people getting their paychecks cashed. Possibly I’m wrong and the banks statistically figure out what they need to hold at each branch per week.
I will keep this in mind and pull some larger amounts out in the near future. If there was an emergency and atms or banks were rushed, there would not be any cash to spare for weeks.
They don’t have your cash, Timeloose. It’s in Sloopy’s house, and KK’s mobile home, and TOK’s business!
I know they don’t have all of my money for withdrawals at any given time, but if less than $10k would clean them out for a week, then a little emergency would cripple the local banks and atms.
I was able to find another branch that isn’t as cash poor.
Could I have seventeen-fifty?
Richard sent it to China to pay for some buttons
Damn, damn good, TOK.
I have about 3,000 in cash in safes at home. The Derecho shut down electricity and telephones for a couple of weeks back in 2020. No business could process anything but cash transactions. I learned from that.
There was a big thread on Bogleheads a while back over “do you keep cash at home?” – it was split between “yes, obviously” and “no, you people are fools who should have every penny invested – why would you ever need significant cash?”
Someone pithily observed the thread was divided into “people who have lived through an extended power outage and those who have not.”
(yes, I have cash on hand)
I have to hide cash from Mrs Rat. She always needs a little cash for something. When I need cash I find my wallet empty.
In Podunkville the bank runs the check across the street to the liquor store and gets the cash.
Every nook and cranny
I have kept more than $4K in cash at home ever since the big banking kerfuffle in ‘08. I knew a bank president, and the things he had to say about cash reserves and how razor close we came to a bank run were sobering.
Yeah, I lived in Houston when Hurricane Rita hit. Biggest issue we had was several days without power. Cash was king for those several days.
@kinnath: “I have about 3,000 in cash in 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐬 at home.”
*Look at wallet, finances. Ponders.*
I wish to join you on your journey. (I’m small. I’m sure I can fit in *one* of ’em.)
What time?
In the old days when I was a teller the vault was tallied and closed around 3:30.
But no way would it take a week. Next day we would have it ready for you.
$7k also doesn’t seem like a huge amount to have on hand – I guess if it’s a tiny place…
To be fair, it was out of the trunk of a Chevy Nova, and the guy also had a lot of gold chains for sale.
We had lots of cash businesses make deposits. We actually shipped out cash.
I remember one branch I worked with a roller rink. They and the bank did business for years. They would drop off grocery bags stuffed with cash.
We would count it all day between customers.
It was 3:30 and they close at 5:00. Come back tomorrow was the worst I expected. A week was due to them getting their cash delivery for the week.
Again crazy.
So they had just gotten their cash delivery and didn’t have $7K?
Good grief! $7k isn’t even enough to require a Currency Transaction Report under the stupid, annoying Bank Secrecy Act. 🙄
If you do make some large withdrawals to make sure you have green foldy money on hand in an emergency, you may want to make sure the transactions aren’t too large and/or close together so it doesn’t look as if you’re “structuring.” (Also 🙄)
you may want to make sure the transactions aren’t too large and/or close together so it doesn’t look as if you’re “structuring.”
Ok, I apologize for sounding like I am jumping on you GT, but this is not right, and I really wish we had a delete button because I’d be advising you to spam that sucker right now. If you take out, or deposit money in multiple transactions in order to avoid a CTR, that is Structuring, so changing the timing or size of transactions to avoid looking like structuring is itself structuring. It has nothing to do with what you intend with the money, it is purely a matter of doing the transactions piecemeal to avoid the CTR. If you want more than $10,000, you should do it as a single transaction and let the bank file the CTR.
Hard to believe a bank didn’t have $7k. Why just last week, robbers hit an armored car guy taking one bag into a small strip mall grocery store in Philly. Supposedly that bag contained $700,000! If a grocery can carry that load of cash, then a bank shouldn’t be far behind
My bank will only let me transfer 5K a day to another account. I owed some money, it took several days to get my bill paid.
They told the insurance company it was 700K.
The first time I read that I wasnt even finished reading before I thought…inside job and bullshit number. It is an insurance scam.
I don’t think what she said was incorrect.
Also, I don’t think you actually disagreed with her.
Also, all of this is common knowledge.
Also, she works at a credit union.
SARs can be filed (and even are required to be filed), even if the total doesn’t add up over $10K. Not having a valid or adequate reason is enough and a bank will always CYA if they’re competent.
I wanted to get out $10k one day and was told the same thing.
There is likely around $30,000 in the ATM.
I got $2k today.
More than 1.2 million immigrants disappeared from the labor force from January through the end of July, according to preliminary Census Bureau data analyzed by the Pew Research Center. That includes people who are in the country illegally as well as legal residents (the AP claimed, without evidence).
Fixed it for ’em.
If you are a legal resident you are not going to show up as an immigrant.
Sob story from the first sentence. How many millions of Americans are we paying to sit on the couch all day to get high and play Xbox?
The AP can go fuck itself, as always. Disgusting propagandists.
…Tell me about this concept of receiving payment for getting high and playing XBox. I may be interested.
OTD in history: 90 years ago today, the Great Labor Day Hurricane cut through the middle of the Florida Keys as the most powerful storm ever at landfall in the U.S.
A few hundred World War I veterans were huddled near Islamorada working on a road project for the Civilian Conservation Corps. As the hurricane approached, a train was sent down from Miami to take them to safety. But because it was a government project, there were hours of delays before the train backed up from Homestead to pick them up. By then it was too late, and the train was knocked asunder by the storm surge.
About 400 bodies were eventually recovered — the total number of victims will be forever unknown. At first the dead were taken to a mortuary in Miami, but after a while, putrefaction set in, and bodies were just gathered up and burned.
Most of those cremated remains are in a vault under the Hurricane Memorial located just off US-1 near Lower Matecumbe Key. The memorial itself is a tasteful coral and limestone tablet featuring an Art Deco-style bas relief of palm trees bending in the tremendous winds.
And because that was a government project, they chiseled the trees backwards — bending into the wind.
Are the backward trees Commentary or an accident?
Were I to hazard a guess, the artist was commissioned to do the bas relief, and did.
Then someone else decided that the monument should face southwest (where the art looks best under the natural sunlight), not considering that the palms were mis-bent.
Also OTD:
“It is my earnest hope, and indeed the hope of all mankind, that from this solemn occasion a better world shall emerge out of the blood and carnage of the past — a world founded upon faith and understanding, a world dedicated to the dignity of man and the fulfillment of his most cherished wish for freedom, tolerance, and justice.”

All mankind on 9/3/45: “Let’s get back to business as usual.”
The nice thing about giving an ‘end of the war’ speech is that you dont have to write it. You just give the standard one given at the end of every war ever.
“We won. We are free. We learned our lesson. This will never happen again.”
Until it does,

The war to end all declarations of war.

They’re going to send Ding Chavez in next?
Coming Soon! A Netflix movie about the tragic deaths of the 3 transexual sailors on board the drug ship. Everybody makes out and declares their undying love to each other and makes out right before the missiles hit.

Ooof, I just got my toll bill for my rental in NC – $40? WTF? I was there for 3 days.
Along with a $30 “convenience fee” – for tolls that had no option to pay cash.
Fuck you, NC. Fuck you, Hertz.
Just buy a fast trak account and kiss the fees goodbye, saves a lot when traveling cross country, faster too.
Assuming that’s like EZ Pass, you can’t use those with rentals.
Huh, looking around, that may not be true & you can bring your own transponder with a rental – just gotta make sure any built-in is shielded.
Live & learn.
Same thing, they are being honored across state line, very convenient.
You _may_ also have to go on the EZ Pass / whatever website and add the rental to your account, so the plate reader matches the transponder, but that’s not so bad.
Next time (although I was solo this trip, not sure I could have left the wife w/o the transponder)
Has Hetz sent you your ding bill yet? I’m honestly surprised that anyone not named OJ would rent from them anymore.
I’ve had a good experience with Hertz to date – first time I’ve gotten this.
It’s also on NC – they’re toll crazy, apparently.
Count it a victory if they didn’t report the car stolen.
I see MS spelled “enlaces” correctly today. I thought “enalces” was our new GlibMeme.
Its Glibertarians inside joke, reference number 11808, mex misspelled something in Spanish enough times iOS will autocorrect to the incorrect spelling.
I am disappoint.

Bro, are you out there? You didn’t say which version of Wicker Man you wanted to show. The 1973 version or the 2006 version? I just thought of that after seeing Slumbrew’s link.
There’s only one version, starring Edward Woodward.
