Godzilla vs. Destoroyah

It just would not be Halloween without some kind of Kaiju movie! I picked one of the last of the rubber suit era Godzilla films for this year. Last year I played one of the best of the rubber suit films, Godzilla vs Megaguirus. Toniught’s film is the same quality. If you are a super Godzilla nerd, this is the last film of the Heisei era, before we hit 2000. Things got hit and miss in the 2000s, we had American films that bordered on generic, and Japanese films that got really, really drawn out with minimal monster action (Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, I am looking at you.)

So what happens in this film? Godzilla overheats and is on the verge of experiencing nuclear meltdown, the Oxygen Destroyer from the 1954 movie has become an actual kaiju instead of a gas, and a giant monster fight ensues! This film has a similar concept as Godzilla vs. Megaguirus, where you have a bunch of smaller creatures that grow and begin to merge into a larger creature. Really stunning fight scenes, cinematography, just all over a great end to this particular era of films.

Trivia! This was the last film where the original producer and creator of Godzilla,  Tomoyuki Tanaka, participated in a major role. He was old and this film was a burden for him to complete. This was also the last Godzilla film for the original composer,  Akira Ifukube. He had been doing this since 1954 as well. Lots of swan songs! I wonder what else might end with this film? Watch and see!

So watch! Or don’t! Everything is voluntary! With any luck the government shutdown continues and Trump has approved plans to slash the workforce by a significant amount. Who knows? All I can say is I have popcorn out for the shutdown and for tonight’s film! Next week, we have a classic old dark house movie – House of the Long Shadows!

Kickoff is in 15 minutes. So I’ll miss this movie.

      • Common Tater

I’ll poke my head in during commercials.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

      Fuck Shitidelphia.

Fuck the tush push bullshit, it isn’t any different than the flying V.

      • Gender Traitor

        I thought the Flying V was a guitar. 🤔

  2. The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

The original oxygen destroyer one was one of my faves, I’ll have to try this one.

    • R.J.

It starts right up with the action. It’s a solid Godzilla action film.

    • The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

Finally figured out how to cast Tubi to my TV. The world is my oyster.

      • R.J.

I deliberately did not post that as the music so one of you could do it.

      • Common Tater

I use HDMI, but bluetooth should work?

      • Ted S.

I’ve got the Tubi app on a Roku box.

      • R.J.

If you have a phone for TUBI you can cast, and it is surprisingly good depending on your TV. Great for traveling where you don’t really want to log in to a foreign TV and add apps.

      • The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

        @tater

HDMI should work fine. I’m casting over my Wi-Fi network.

  3. DEG

I’ll queue this up for later viewing. I won’t be able to watch tonight.

    Thanks RJ!

  4. Nephilium

I did not have the Giants looking better than the Iggles tonight.

    • rhywun

I can’t even with some of you and your Amazon Prime privilege.

      • Nephilium

Don’t worry, that strangeness didn’t last long.

      • Chafed

I’m grateful to Amazon. I don’t have Prime. So, they freed me of my Thursday night football commitment.

      • Common Tater

If you are in NY, shouldn’t it be on regular TV?

      • Nephilium

        Common Tater:

No. Thursday Night Football is Prime only.

      • rhywun

shouldn’t it be on regular TV?

NYC only. I’m not in that market anymore.

      • rhywun

        Prime only

The local markets seem to get the broadcast too.

  5. creech

Igles are getting plucked. You could have made a fortune in the last week or so betting against favored Philly teams.

    • rhywun

Were they favored against LA? I don’t follow baseball but I hate the idea of an LA team winning anything.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

I’ll take it over SF winning.

      • rhywun

I’ll take it over SF winning.

Harsh. I have lived there so I have a tiny residual good feelings for there even though I kind of hated living there.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

My dad was born there, and I had a ton of family there and in Berkeley. I lived on the outskirts, but the hubris of that city makes me root against them.

      • rhywun

        the hubris of that city

lol Memories of one of the local news channel slogans “best place on earth” or some stupid shit. Yeah they are quite full of themselves there.

  6. Aloysious

RJ, that little gif of somebody that slightly resembles you getting swallowed by a cyclopean… thingy is a work of art.

    Obligatory:. GODZIRRRAA!!! OH, NOOO.

    • R.J.

Jib Jab is a great tool.

      • Chafed

I’m looking forward to the full length version.

      • rhywun

Jib Jab is a great tool.

I *hate* those commercials but you do put it to good use.

      • R.J.

It’s good but such a huge file.

  7. Gustave Lytton

1995 film last movie of Heisei era?

    🤦‍♂️

    2016 film in Reiwa era?
    🤦‍♂️ 🤦 🤦‍♀️

    • R.J.

There are so many eras. I would say Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One were their own era and deserve that name.

      • Gustave Lytton

Eras are emperors’ reigns. Showa (Hirohito) 1926-1989, Heisei (Akihito) 1989-2019, Hisei (Naruhito) 2019-present.

      • CPRM

Era is laundry soap. Don’t try and confuse me with yer fern ways.

  8. ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

God, the Giants are just beating the piss out of the Iggles.

Not a Giants fan, but it is glorious.

  9. Gustave Lytton

I need an ai slop version of Spock’s Brain with “Thursday football? What is Thursday football?”

    • rhywun

But it’s the good kind of sexism.

      • Brochettaward

My favorite sexism is wherever there are men and women working together and the men are still expected to do any and all physically demanding tasks for the same pay as their female counterparts.

    • The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

      Christ, what aholes.

    • slumbrew

Only 1% of the industry is women on tools, so we have had to be creative and use local resources.”

About 340,000 women are employed within the UK construction industry, according to Simian, one of the country’s leading construction and scaffolding specialists.

However, just 7% of executive roles are held by women

They’re mixing percentages and total numbers, which is usually a good sign they’re slinging bullshit but it sounds like they’re wildly over represented in the executive suite.

      *narrator*those are all HR jobs

    • cavalier973

Sounds like the basis for a weepypasta story.

“My wife threw me—an owner of a home renovation company for twenty years—out of the house and hired her women’s rights friends to refurbish the kitchen. What she doesn’t know is that I froze all our bank accounts and filed for divorce…”

    • Not Adahn

Why is there a pic of a dude in that “all female” crew?

      • cavalier973

Not Adahn: They got an all women photography crew for the story, obviously.

    • Gustave Lytton

Good morning Glibbernam! Time to take a nap and start the hamster wheel all over again.

  10. CPRM

Man, if they had stuck with mixing practical and digital effects the rubber suit would kill all the CGI versions.

    • Gender Traitor

Good morning, Sean, Ted’S., U, and Roat!

      • Gender Traitor

It goes well, but I had to ditch my capri-length jeans for a full-length pair and find a matching pair of socks. I guess I really should finish the second sock I was knitting. It’s perilously close to being done – I just haven’t touched it in months. 🧶🧦

        How are you?

      • UnCivilServant

I decided I would go into the office, despite the lingering cough, since I should be able to make it through the workday.

I’m having trouble reaching protonmail from the office, so I’m not sure if you responded to my last email yet (I love the “something went wrong” error, so helpful)

Wasted too much time poking at the LLM yesterday, so I didn’t get anything more written.

      • Gender Traitor

I got the email, but I haven’t responded yet. Waiting until I can reliably form coherent sentences…which may take a while.

      • UnCivilServant

Well, no rush, I wouldn’t be able to read your reply until I got back to the house anyway.

  11. Ted S.

The thermometer, which I don’t think is in the best location, says it’s 37 outside, but there was frost on the windshield when I went out to check.

I think I get it. You’re using TCP over telegraph, and get charged by the character.

“Did Israel Kill Charlie Kirk (The Leaked Texts)”
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EFNx1NwArQ

I keep seeing stuff like this. Even in the DailyMail. It’s why Jillian Micheals walked off Her Take (and the next episode they didn’t even mention her leaving). I can understand there were inconsistencies and questionable things, but that doesn’t mean the Jews did it.

    • Ted S.

      32 minutes of this shit?

      • UnCivilServant

You need to maximize ad revenues.

      • Common Tater

Would you rather have 3 1/2 hours of Dave Smith and Nick Fuentes?

      • UnCivilServant

Here’s the best part – you’re not required to watch any of it. Not one jot. You can choose not to subject yourself to it.

      • Ted S.

No, I’d rather read a synopsis.

    • cavalier973

The people accusing Israel of killing Kirk are only telling me what THEY would’ve done.

I doubt Kirk was that important to the Israeli government.

Also, if Kirk had been that important, and he was really turning against Israel, it would have been more productive to address whatever concerns he was expressing than shooting him in the head.

There are people who claim that Kirk wasn’t actually shot, and it is a coverup. Something about angles of fire and bullet wounds, and videos of people at the scene moving evidence around.

      • Common Tater

I’ve seen similar things, that the text was AI, etc.

      • DEG

I saw the leaked texts and that Turning Point confirmed them. Not in the linked video, a different video. Kirk had American Jewish donors that were upset with his questioning of Israeli/American relations and were upset with Kirk wanting to have Tucker Carlson on his show. Some of those donors pulled funding.

I don’t buy there is any connection between this and Kirk’s murder.
