Speaker Johnson says no quick fix to Obamacare subsidy ‘boondoggle’

Obamacare is doing EXACTLY what it was designed to do. EXACTLY.

These evil people designed Obamacare from the get go to destroy any kind of private healthcare system, because they know the best and easiest way to completely own the unwashed masses is to make them dependent on an evil government for their healthcare.

    • SDF-7

I agree with your comment on the design — I wouldn’t say “exactly” since I think they thought the system would have collapsed and we’d be formally on Single Payer by now.

      • AlexinCT

Those damned tax payers just going along with getting fleeced and the middle class not collapsing when they wanted it to wrecked their timeline.

    • Certified Public Asshat

“We have lots of ideas on how to fix it, but it is very, very complicated,” Mr. Johnson said, noting that roughly 15% of the U.S. economy is entwined in the health care system. “You can’t just rip it out at the roots and start over.”

Republicans have no ideas though and will eventually fund it anyway along with everything else.

“Israel releases more than 1,900 Palestinian prisoners as part of ceasefire deal”

Sucks, but I suppose the political pressure was too much. I do wonder if the Israelis did so on the theory that next time they see any of them, they are just going to kill them, though.

    • AlexinCT

They sure as hell should start doing so.

Speaker Johnson says no quick fix to Obamacare subsidy ‘boondoggle’

COVID era subsidies nothing — I’m still pissed that these yahoos won’t go back to pre-COVID spending (at least) across the board. There’s really no justification, unlike wanting them to go back to 1990 or something (where they could whine about various programs, demographic shifts, etc..).. the country has not fundamentally changed since 2019. The military obligations have not gotten worse. The only thing that’s gotten worse is all the people / states / whatnot used to Free Federal Money ™ — and we don’t f’ing have it to give in the first place. So cut it out already.

Preaching, choir… I know, I know… just gets me every single f’ing time these DC wastes of a good suit hanger start bloviating about how tough it is to roll back one little tiny arc on the ratchet.

“Oregon officials expect to spend $1.5 billion in combined state and federal taxpayer dollars on a program that offers health benefits to illegal aliens from 2025 to 2027.”

I assume that’s Medicaid, which means Oregon is spending around $500MM of its own dollars, and $1BB in matching federal dollars. Why the ever loving fuck is a single federal dollar going to health care for illegals>

    • rhywun

And yet every Democrat is claiming that no federal tax money is going to illegals. (After they reclassified them as “legal” for purposes of showering them with money.)

      Could they be lying? 🤔

      • R C Dean

The legal sleight of hand for the Biden migrants was that they were “paroled” into the country, essentially meaning deferred prosecution/deportation. As far as I can tell, at best their legal status is in suspense. Which still means they aren’t here legally, we’re just letting them stay anyway.

What The H*ll Is Going On With Trump’s Narco Strikes? Are We At War With Venezuela?

Nah — given this is drug interdiction, I’m sure it is more of a police action.

Wonder if they could swing this as a blockade? Presumably getting these speedboats intercepted might be a pain — but perhaps tell Venezuela to tell their “fishermen” they must all have radios capable of receiving on standard channels (one would hope this is true anyway) and then give them one warning to turn back if they’re suspected? If they don’t… do what we’re doing with at least the fig leaf that they were given warning and all… if they do, the drugs don’t make it here that way at least. Not as clear of a message, admittedly — but a tad more legal if it comes to matter (I doubt it will).

    • R C Dean

Speedboats, not fishing vessels. In international waters. Allegedly operated by terrorists (I don’t think it matters what they were smuggling). From a legal perspective, I’d say interdicting these boats is probably pretty complicated. I don’t know how practical it would be to try to stop and board them, considering how fast they are.

      • SDF-7

Yeah, I know they’re speedboats — I think some stupid pols / media was trying to say they were just fishermen (in dual outboard speedboats with no nets, naturally) and I was heckling that a little.

And yeah — I’m thinking that’s why we’re missile or drone striking them, hence the “radio warning… then blow them away” may be the next best option as interception simply wouldn’t be feasible.

      • Tonio

All it takes is one Popeil Pocket Fisherman(tm) on board and voila you’re a fishing boat.

      • Threedoor

I e seen snipers in helicopters shoot out the engines.

        That’s more fun I suppose.

    • Drake

It’s like dropping a bomb on your house because you are suspected of being a criminal.

      • R C Dean

Don’t get me wrong; I’m not crazy about this.

But with sufficient reason to believe that foreign nationals are terrorists (which is to say, illegal combatants), and they are doing terrorist shit (which includes smuggling drugs) in international waters, I don’t know that civilian standards would necessarily apply.

      • Ted S.

Is this what letters of marquee and reprisal are for?

      • Drake

A Letter of Marque would allow you to seize that boat and its contents and keep them – if owned by a named enemy. Still wouldn’t allow you to kill everyone onboard indiscriminately unless they were actively fighting.

    • AlexinCT

One of those history channels had a multi-year series of how the US coast guard and the Dutch navy interdicted drug trafficking fast boats from Venezuela trying to run past their drug smuggler blockades around the Dutch Antilles (Curacao, Aruba, and St. Martin). The Dutch even went so far as to build a whole class of naval interception vessels to interdict these boats and stationed them in the Caribbean. The Dutch navy or the US coast guard would use helicopters to shoot the engines of the boats out in order for their own fast craft to be able to grab them if they would not stop. These foreign nationals would be caught, and after a while, be deported back to Venezuela, where they would then be caught in another boat a few weeks later. It was a game of lose-lose.

We now simply make sure there is no second chance for these people. I would love a TV series about that.

      • Threedoor

That’s like shooting down German aces over Germany.

Oregon Now Spends More On Program Offering Free Health Care For Illegal Immigrants Than State Police

No surprise — hasn’t every state that’s tried this blown their budgets wide open in the attempt? Big reason to hope Vance or DeSantis manages to hold the White House in 2028… there can’t be a bailout for these states.. and I doubt they can hold on more than another couple of years before they’d need one.

    • R C Dean

Depending on how you do the accounting, these are net earners for the state, considering every state dollar they spend brings in two federal dollars.

I don’t know what Medicaid programs still exist to pay for illegals. If there are any, they need to be terminated. Medicaid also needs to say that, as a matter of simple fiscal hygiene, it won’t match any state dollars unless the patient has provided proof of eligibility (meaning, citizenship).

And I guarantee you there is a mountain of fraud involved in getting Medicaid to pay for illegals.

      • dbleagle

Can you load a water cannon with pepper spray?

Because I see a bunch of naked commies doing stupid commie shit, and my first thought is pepper spray. Liberally applied.

Alternatively, some of that chemical compound that makes skunks smell like they do, or the one that makes corpses smell like they do.

      • Nephilium

Pretty sure the spray back would be a reason not to do that.

      • EvilSheldon

Naw. Any time the cops deploy pepper spray or CS in large quantities, they’re wearing gas masks.

The idea of a thiol/thioacetate spray (the compounds in skunk spray) is interesting, but those chemicals are adhesive and persistent as hell. You’ll end up making the entire area reek for days, which would be kind of a bummer for the people who work there.

    The Emptiness of Kamala Harris

It is hard to see what kind of political career Kamala Harris will ever have again. This makes her unique among recently vanquished major-party nominees — barring a remarkable shift in circumstances, there really is nowhere else for her to go.
Every defeated presidential nominee, until Harris, had a place within their party after the crushing loss.

The media tour Harris has undertaken for her recently published memoir is a reminder that the former vice-president is going to struggle to have a place in the political firmament. She will not run for governor of California (she had no vision for the office anyway). She has mulled a 2028 presidential run, where she is no longer the polling leader. But what’s the point, really, of another presidential bid?

I’m not 100% sure Obama was born in the US. The shenanigans around his birth certificate make relying on that, well, unwise. The alterations made to the released .pdf are suspicious, to say the least. The best argument for it seems to be that the timeline most likely places his mother in Hawaii at the right time, if memory serves.

If we are really trying to look on the bright side, the rise of period betting points to just how popular women’s sports are becoming. Women’s football, for example, already one of the top 10 most followed sports globally, is on track to become one of the top five sports by 2030, according to a recent report by Nielsen Sports. And, halfway through the 2025 season, WNBA ratings are breaking records and drawing in a broader fanbase. The New York Times reports that the number of boys under 18 who watch WNBA has grown by 130% over the past four years.

      1) I’m assuming Women’s football is soccer? I’d love to see the actual numbers on this. Why do I think that the claims of popularity are total bs? I never saw one women’s soccer game in the year I spent in Japan and Korea. I saw men’s soccer, a lot of baseball, some men’s baseball, judo. The only women’s sports I saw was badminton (and I actually saw a lot of that).

      2) Why only the first half of the WNBA year? What happened in the second half? Oh yea, Clark got hurt and no one gave a shit afterwards.

      3) Nice use of % as a measuring stick. 130% of 0 is still 0.

  29. Pope Jimbo

Uffda. Glad I’m going to die in my own home, because Minnesoda DFL pols have totally fucked up the nursing homes here.

Get ready to be surprised, but it seems that the DFL takeover of the nursing home industry when they controlled the Gov, the House and the Senate might not work out as planned.

The state reforms, brought about by legislation passed during Democrats’ 2023 trifecta, mark a first-of-its-kind state approach to rewrite workplace rules for a specific industry, and perhaps the most ambitious attempt nationally to set new labor standards for the essential end-of-life care sector. Legal challenges, complicated financial relationships, and a diminishing rural workforce make it difficult to predict how the changes will affect workers, patients and the industry overall.

Honestly, there is just too much outrage fodder to be able to quote properly.

In a nutshell, the pols gave unions all the power over nursing homes and – amazingly – the unions raised wages to the point that everyone is going under.

    • Pope Jimbo

In 2023, the Legislature worked with labor unions on a bill that created the Nursing Home Workforce Standards Board, which now has the power to issue binding state regulations.

Unions zeroed in on nursing homes “because the nursing home industry is the lowest paid segment of our membership universe,” said Jamie Gulley, president of SEIU Health Care Minnesota and Iowa and chair of the workforce board.

According to data reported to the Minnesota Department of Human Services, 101 of the state’s 329 nursing facilities have a collective bargaining agreement. But even among unionized nursing homes, employees — many teenagers in their first job or seniors in their last — are said to ineffectively bargain. “The negotiations tend to be lopsided,” said Rep. Esther Agbaje, DFL-Minneapolis, and sponsor of the workforce board legislation.

The concept is an old one, designed to set industry-specific standards for pay and working conditions, regardless whether they are unionized or not. The boards were common across the country in the 1940s but went away as part of a deal President Harry Truman cut with a Republican-controlled Congress in 1949 to raise the minimum wage to 75 cents an hour.

Organized labor in recent years has successfully renewed the model in six states, including California, which created one for fast food employees, and Nevada, which established a body for home care employees.

Well that settles it. We all know how well the fast food industry in Cali is going.

      • Threedoor

Nursing homes are crazy expensive as it is.
