Sunday Morning Bullet Dodging Links

by | Nov 9, 2025 | Daily Links | 222 comments

This was the stupidest relevant image I could find.

Actually, several bullets were dodged. We had a gala opening of a new shop here in the Gulch, of a type I call a “chick shop.” Scented soaps, knick-knacks, feminist-themed stickers, books, napkin rings, twee little lamps, you know the type. Everyone who was anyone was there, and the political talk was heavy and monotone. I wiggled out of any questions or comments thrown my way, and apparently successfully.

Spud and I had a dinner with our respective SOs who had never met. They are extremely different people, but each fine in their own way. Nonetheless, there’s always a worry. Dodged that bullet, too, they got along great.

Life is a bit easier today.

Birthdays today are a bit sparse but include a guy not famous for the Klein bottle; a guy who made fire chief long before Spud could have; someone to blame for Harvey Korman and your cell phone; a politician doomed to be an NCO all his life; the liberal candidate for governor of Maryland in ’66; a much better version of Neil deGrasse Tyson; not the greatest chess player ever but certainly the most creative; the obligatory commie blonde in the act; and a musician I’d have no truck with.

And as usual, a truckload of Links.

If this signals the possible ending of the execrable Obamacare, great. But it’s more likely to be more Trumpian brain-lint.

Here’s a crazy idea: instead of arguing about enforcement, argue about changing the actual law. You know, what Team Red and Team Blue both don’t want to do.

As any American man on the alimony express will note, there’s paying and there’s paying.

I’ve lost several girlfriends this way as well.

Hang out in Chicago and this is statistically inevitable.

This guy, he’s my kind of guy.

The usual anonymous sourcing, but if true, a delightful troll. Now give the team their name back.

Counting on the usual useful leftist idiots and bigots to bail them out.

Well, at least it’s convenient.

Most Underwhelming GoFundMe Ever.

The decline and fall of Australia.

This could go two ways. I’m betting on it turning out well; Sharaa is nothing if not transactional.

One of the worst parts of this generation is that female rockers have mutated into freak shows. The Old Guy notes that this is what they took away from us.

I am recommending to Senate Republicans that the Hundreds of Billions of Dollars currently being sent to money sucking Insurance Companies in order to save the bad Healthcare provided by ObamaCare, BE SENT DIRECTLY TO THE PEOPLE SO THAT THEY CAN PURCHASE THEIR OWN, MUCH BETTER, HEALTHCARE, and have money left over

Why do I get the feeling that even if this happened, some district court judge would issue a stay within the hour and we’d have to wait 2 years for the appeal to reach SCOTUS?

    • (((Jarflax

Sigh, how about instead of this we just ditch the income tax entirely to get rid of the tax benefits of insurance and let people go ahead and pay for their own medical care directly, without massive layers of Government and Insurance company bureaucracy?

Because if you hold a penny in your left hand then change it over to your right hand the govt is going to get its fucking beak wet. Allowing private transactions of any kind ever to happen without them regulating it and taking a cut is unthinkable. They are going to stick their dick into every aspect of your life no matter how trivial….ask that cockroach that just got elected mayor of NYC, he will tell you straight up.

      • juris imprudent

And the fat and stupid don’t get that when government really is paying for your health, then government is going to dictate to you what you can and can’t do, for the sake of your health.

    • RAHeinlein

      I am in-favor for two reasons –

Create populist support for ACA alternatives

Incentives to direct payments for healthcare which will hopefully create alternate care channels.

Like many here I am self-employed and had a very reasonable high-deductible plan pre-ACA. The individual mandate was extremely stressful but we opted to not comply and simply never “checked the box” on insurance coverage. We’ve been uninsured for over a decade, but actual healthcare becomes more expensive and tedious as so many are covered via ACA/Medicaid so the system is set-up to maximize profits from the multiple freebies offered from those plans.

Carlos Rodríguez had finally begun to feel at home in the United States. He’d fled Venezuela in 2018 and spent the last six years building a future in Miami. He saved money with the dream of putting a down payment on a small house, adopted a dog after his first promotion and was quietly planning how to propose to his girlfriend.

But on Thursday night, the faint smell of coffee lingered in his apartment as he folded the last kitchen towel into a box — taking apart, piece by piece, the life he had worked so hard to create. The next day, he’d be giving his dog to the neighbors, ending his two-year relationship and boarding a flight to Spain.

“Not because I want to,” Rodríguez said, “but because I’m being forced out — again.”

Rodríguez, 30, is among the more than 600,000 Venezuelans who have, as of Friday, lost temporary protected status, or TPS — a designation that shielded them from deportation and allowed many to work and live in the United States. Overnight, some lost the jobs they’d held for years; others closed shops, walked away from leases and left homes standing empty. Many have also lost their licenses, health insurance and access to routine care.

Not sure how much has changed in the last 20 years, but a friend of my dad’s (legal permanent resident) was convinced Spain was a socialist paradise where he would receive top medical care for his myriad health problems and tried to immigrate. Turns out their socialism isn’t really the international variety. Good luck there, Carlos.

Also, not for nothing, but you could have applied for asylum in about 18 countries on your way from Venezuela to the USA, and the “T” in “TPS” stands for “temporary.” It’s on the label.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

So, he forgot to put the cover sheet on the TPS report? Yeah, were going to go ahead and do that from now on.

Boris Johnson and figures linked to him are engaging in an effort to undermine the BBC’s leadership, insiders fear, after the leaking of a memo criticising its reporting of Donald Trump, trans rights and Gaza.

GAZA, Nov 9 (Reuters) – Hamas fighters holed up in the Israeli-held Rafah area of Gaza will not surrender to Israel, the group’s armed wing said on Sunday, urging mediators to find a solution to a crisis that threatens the month-old ceasefire.

Sources close to mediation efforts told Reuters on Thursday that fighters could surrender their arms in exchange for passage to other areas of the enclave under a proposal aimed at resolving the stalemate.

The “month old ceasefire” actually ended about 3.5 weeks ago when Hamas violated it. That should probably be obvious when your story begins with Hamas refusing to surrender arms and stop fighting.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

You know, I haven’t tripped over the word Genocide in a few weeks, wonder why?

It’s pretty amazing how the terms remain negotiable to them. It’s almost as if Hamas never had any intention of honoring the terms.

Given that women have a different operating system than men, I wouldn’t be so sure they got along. It’s really easy to misinterpret the signals, at least in my experience.

      • Pat

The safe assumption is that all women actually hate each other with the passion of a thousand suns, but as long as they can keep a lid on it long enough to get through dinner with your best friend and his mate, don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

      • Old Man With Candy

I rode home with Spud and (woman to be nicknamed later) while Prime drove home in the other direction. WTBNNL was gushing about how “brilliant but down to earth” Prime was, and wondered what I did to land such a wonderful woman.

Tired and poor was bullshit from the beginning. We were the outlet for the misfits of rest of the world – the ones that weren’t happy in their straightjacket societies. This has always been a country for those who wanted better and now we are led by those who want to revert America to the world norm.

News out of Chester County, PA is that the Democrat run Election Board left off the rolls the names of 75,000 independent and third party registered voters. Some 16% managed to cast provisional ballots in an election where the turnout was about 45% of uni party voters. Right under this article in the local paper is this headline: “Shapiro fears Trump will interfere with midterm elections.”

    • Pat

the Democrat run Election Board left off the rolls the names of 75,000 independent and third party registered voters

That’s progress of a sort, at least they didn’t just submit 75,000 party line ballots in their stead.

    • juris imprudent

But Democrats swear they want EVERYONE to vote.

    • Gustave Lytton

      And nothing else happened.

For years, the establishment here claimed there was no way for illegals to use driver license registration to vote. And they wouldn’t want to because there were criminal penalties. In series of dribbled revelations turns out illegals were registered (by “mistake”). And some voted. This week state announced there would be no prosecutions because it would be too hard to prove.

  19. Q Continuum

Sure, Tucker Carlson is increasingly crazy, Candace Owens is a conspiracy loon and Nick Fuentes is a total shithead; but how this compares to the bulk of the Democrat base chanting “from the river to the sea” and celebrating the slaughter of Jewish babies eludes me.

Though they and their male partners are well educated in obscure subjects, they don’t have real financially marketable skills. Good run down on the hullaballoo about Tucker, Heritage, et al.

Buckley assembled under one big tent libertarians or limited government conservatives and traditionalists or social conservatives and blended the best ideas of both. Together, he believed, they reflected America’s exceptional political heritage. His efforts culminated in 1980 in Ronald Reagan’s election as president of the United States.

And, in keeping with Hoffer – what was the devil that united them all? Communism, and thus the Cold War. With Communism vanquished, what was left to hold that movement together?

MAGA won’t hold because it is first and foremost a cult of personality, and when that personality withdraws, so goes the motivation.

Seriously, that is enough to keep the band together. And Fuentes is only big because he is the new bogey man for the left to whistle past the graveyard with. Ta-Nehisi Coats is closer to David Duke than anyone else right now.

    • Pat

It’s somewhat amusing to see all these navel gazing reflections on the good old days of conservatism. Ronald Reagan was castigated as a populist rabble-rouser and despised by the GOP establishment, which is why he was turfed in 1976 and had to add GHWB to his ticket to get the Rockefeller wing and donor class to jump on board in 1980. It was every bit the coup that Trump’s “takeover” of the GOP was in 2016.

      • juris imprudent

Almost like continuous tumult to be the top dogs.

Also recalling how the Taft wing was turned out in favor of Ike (and the ascendancy of what you refer as to establishment).

      • Pat

Ha, true. “Establishment” is whoever was running the show when I was born.

What’s always kind of puzzled me is why we haven’t had a party die out like the Whigs in such a long time. I get that our system more or less guarantees a duopoly, but it doesn’t have to be the particular duopoly we’ve had since the Civil War.

      • (((Jarflax

I think that is basically the power of branding. Each party has a substantial base that literally votes purely based on the candidate having an R or a D next to their name, which means the winning strategy is for different groups to compete for internal control of a party rather than competing as a new party. Expansions in the electorate have generally not increased the percentage that votes carefully, which locks in the duopoly.

      • juris imprudent

        the power of branding

When I was born, a Southern Democrat would die before accepting the label of Republican. When the brand transforms so radically is that really brand loyalty? I don’t know, but the durability (and adaptability) are puzzling. If anything, I think it is how much the brands are ensconced in the election law that keeps new parties from springing up.

It’s like the Progressive Era, which was slightly more Republican in the beginning than Democratic, until TR broke from the party and after him, all of the progressives went to the Democrats.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Any major political figure that is not specifically blessed by the party stalwarts, either party, is a populist rabble rouser. Trump, Bernie, Bill Clinton, and so on. All threats to the establishment of the party, and thus need to be defeated at all costs.

A 19-year-old Mount Gambier woman has appeared in court for the first time accused of damaging the city’s controversial Cast in Blue sculpture by sticking googly eyes on it.

Amelia Vanderhorst is charged with one count of damaging property over the incident, which allegedly occurred on September 13.

According to court documents, police allege Ms Vanderhorst was “recklessly indifferent” as to whether her conduct damaged the sculpture.

Drove to Cleveland Friday night to see Lovebites (opening act: Edge of Paradise). The Winchester Music Tavern is the size of a shoebox and the place was pretty much at or over capacity. Overheard someone saying “Lakewood is not good at enforcing fire code.”

Based on activity at the merch table, no one was there for the opening band. Although they had a really good looking T that I would have bought just for the graphic, except $45. Based on a small sample of conversation, I’d guess a lot of the crowd was into the Japanese lady metal scene: multiple road trips to see Band Maid, Babymetal, and other Lovebites shows on this tour.

Sound was not bad, depending on where you were standing. The band brought minimal kit and was using the Winchester’s sound system, which was not arranged for people standing on the wings. Overall, I had a good time, greatest disappointment was that Lovebites only played for about an hour. But the tickets were cheap, and I was just happy to be able to see this band, in the US, and in Ohio.

    • Ted S.

$45 for a tyranny is twice what you’d pay downtown.

We won’t shame you for it, however.

      • Grummun

Lovebites is a solid metal band, if you like technical guitar work (as opposed to melodic? I don’t know how else to explain that). And the drummer is a little monster. The vocal styling is a little ‘operatic” (again, don’t know how to explain that better) but I can live with it. Nominally the lyrics are in English. Good luck with that.

  35. The Late P Brooks

Although we recognize that everyone has a right to denounce or shun someone for deviating from progressive or, for that matter, conservative norms, doing so fosters cancel culture and self-censorship. The challenge is how to minimize this chilling effect without weakening free speech, which is indispensable to higher education and a pillar of democracy in America.

Eisgruber asserts, for example, that student efforts to disinvite controversial speakers should be seen as “evidence of independence, not censorship.” While demands to rescind an invitation are protected speech, however, they can encourage self-censorship and marginalize dissent.

Eisgruber notes that it is difficult “to draw a principled distinction between illegitimate cancel culture and legitimate counterspeech.” But to borrow Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart’s observation about pornography, we often know it when we see it.

    Okay, Humpty Dumpty.

I doubt very much Trump would have made a similar argument about student loans.

      Debt is bad. Avoid it.

  39. The Late P Brooks

The significance of Mamdani’s triumph, and the lessons it underscores, cannot be fully appreciated without understanding the political context in which it happened. His campaign was fought under the shadow of organized disinformation and overt bigotry.

For months after his primary win, Mamdani faced an onslaught of Islamophobic attacks and thinly veiled suggestions that his faith and background made him unfit to govern — a pattern documented across mainstream media outlets as well as individuals online. Those criticisms were not incidental; they were designed to distract from the substantive arguments at the heart of the campaign and to erode the very principle of equal citizenship.

Democrats would never stoop to cheap ad hominem smears. They strictly rely on the moral superiority of their policies.

Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Deputy Devin Jaramillo, 27, was shot Friday afternoon on the 12200 block of Southwest 128th Street after he responded to a traffic crash and was attacked by a suspect who got ahold of Jaramillo’s service weapon.

The attack was “not an ambush,” Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said Saturday.

She said Jaramillo responded to the “minor” traffic incident and got into a verbal dispute with a man who was involved, which escalated into a physical altercation.

“[The suspect] fought with our deputy and during that fight he disarmed our deputy of his own service weapon and used it to shoot him multiple times,” Cordero-Stutz said.
