Oh, I dunno. I am um, aware, of situations where any number of styles of firearm stopped a vehicle. A 9mm bullet in a driver means every bit as much as a 5.56 or 7.62 from a long barrel…at very close range.

Sure. Eventually, after the coolant all boils off and the engine seizes, or all the oil exits the sump, or the electronics die in some way…whatever. The agent was shooting because he was scared. That’s never acceptable even if he did luck into legal righteousness.

What’s the alternative? Seriously, it’s easy to say “do this, don’t do that”, but what is the “this” in this particular situation? Let her hit you and hope she doesn’t slam you into a telephone pole spine first? Dive out of the way and risk getting your pelvis crushed by the tire? Jump on the hood and go car surfing?

Absent a duty to retreat *spit*, if someone is trying to run you down, that strikes me as the requisite imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm. Meaning lethal self-defense is justified. So I think that shooting the driver is legitimate self-defense if they are trying to kill you with their car. Sure, the car might not stop right away, but the attack will.
So maybe the question isn’t “Can you stop a car with a handgun”, its “Can you stop an attack with a car, with a handgun”. Trying to stop the car may be analogous to trying to shoot the gun out of an attacker’s hand; you’re going after the tool, not the attacker.
Probably a better chance of reducing injury than having a dead driver.
When an armed agent of the state tells you to stop and surrender, you have 2 choices.
1) comply now and fight it out in court.
2) fight back and see how that turns out.

DHS/ICE have lied about prior shootings or uses of force so I take anything I hear with a grain of salt.
But the woman who was shot quite clearly hits the agent with her car whether intentional or not. You hit a cop with your car, expect to get dead or wounded. I don’t know what else to say about that. We have scant few details about what really happened leading up to it, but the video is clear as day.
Anytime the left starts talking about self defense and their is video of it, it’s proof positive that we live in alternate realities (see Rittenhouse, Kyle as one prime example). Like, she made contact with law enforcement with her car. You aren’t getting out of that without serious consequences.
The left’s rhetoric, as many of you have pointed out, has clearly encouraged all of this bullshit. You have a bunch of middle class or up dopey white women who have no idea how the real world works out here looking to disrupt and agitate law enforcement often times with vehicles being involved. It’s a recipe for disaster. And we have had multiple disasters already.

If someone is trying to run you down with an automobile, your focus needs to be on getting the fuck out of the way. Get something collision-resistant between you and the car. This is generally not hard to do – people on foot aren’t as fast as cars, but they’re way more maneuverable.

The videos clearly show that this is not true. The only ICE agent who touched the car was the one who tried to open the driver’s door. The one who fired his pistol was never touched by the car, although it was close.

Based on the video I saw, they knew it was ICE because everyone was screaming at them, the driver intentionally blocked the road, and tried to get away when approached by the agents. It happened pretty quickly, but I’m not buying some sort of “panicked and hit the wrong pedal” explanation.

Yeah, that’s the crux of it, I guess. If you think he’s being a dumbass by standing in front of the car to prevent her taking off, then that colors the rest of the interaction.
I’m more on the “don’t run cops over if you don’t want to get shot”side of things.
My point still stands though. Regardless of whether he was a dumbass for putting himself where he did, once the car started rolling, he didn’t have very many viable options. Was it reckless to shoot? Maybe. Did he have a clear better option? I guess a few of you think so. I don’t see it so clearly.

Show me evidence of injury – hospital report, paramedic callout, anything along those lines. At the speed the car was moving, there would have been reportable injuries if the car had actually hit him. And again, you can clearly see daylight between the car and the ICE agent in every frame of the video.
And you know, honestly it doesn’t much matter. The question I’m asking is, “Is shooting into a car with a handgun a reasonable way of stopping that car from running you over?” That’s gonna be true or false whether the driver missed him by a mile, or backed over him a second time.

Okay, stop right there. That was not my assertion. My assertion was, as I have repeated several times both yesterday and today, is: ‘Shooting into a car with a handgun/typical shoulder weapon is not a reasonable way of stopping that car from running you over, in a domestic law enforcement context.’
I’m really not interested in how you stopped a truck over in the sandbox by lighting it up with a Mk48 or something, because that is outside the context of domestic law enforcement*. I’m also not interested in how a lucky shot hit some critical component of the car/hair-frisbeed the driver, because luck is not something that should be considered when you’re writing agency SOPs.
* – I still wouldn’t mind hearing about it, because blowing assholes up with belt-fed machineguns is awesome, but it’s not really relevant to this discussion.
