Sunday Morning Mouse That Roared Links

by | Jan 25, 2026 | Daily Links | 198 comments

One effect of the frigid weather is that it’s driven some of the local rodent population indoors. Couple that with the closure of the pharmacy next door who kept a semi-feral cat and we suddenly have mice paying us a visit. In our attempt to be a muroid Auschwitz, we have laid out both Warfarin-laced treats and old fashioned spring-loaded traps. Fortunately, WebDom is not an EEK EEK kind of girl, and she has been relentless in her extermination quest.

Never try to be her nemesis.

But nemeses aside, some births. And today’s include a guy who was a real gas; a bonny lad; someone who scares me; one of my scientific heroes; another one of my musical heroes; and yet another one of my mathematical heroes; and a complex guy who couldn’t go in reverse.

And Links go ever forward.

“You can’t do that, that’s OUR traditions!”

It’s racism all the way down. Subtitle: some people just deserve a punchin’.

How about one takeaway: they’re both retarded.

You don’t really know the deep truths until you hear from superannuated entertainers.

I thought this died with Miss Cleo, but apparently not.

Armed hippies. Glibs Gulch before there was a Glibs Gulch.

You’d think at some point, someone would say, “Fine, go right ahead with your stupid gambit, moron.” I am no fan of Carney, but maybe he’ll be the one.

Oh, no, another paid vacation for federal “workers.” Here’s the archive version.

Ravens fans rejoice. “We needed someone old enough to understand Rodgers’s jokes.”

The Old Guy is an unabashed fan of Randy Weston. I had a cover of this song up recently, but thought, fuck, let’s hear it played by the writer.

Do they round up Jews to send to Euro-Disney as eagerly as they did the original?

Weird, there is a note on my kitchen counter that reads, “The Mouse That Roared”.

Did it say “who stole my cheese?”

No, I think it was something I heard in a podcast.

I thought I’d had a lost a day, as if my calendar had 2 Jan 24ths. My glasses were dirty but still… Thanks TED,s: for clearing that up

I thought they were hauntingly familiar…

    • SandMan

Yeah I had to make sure I didn’t click Saturday’s post.

    • Chafed

I did a double take too.

    • Old Man With Candy

Wish I could but we can’t let the dogs into the kitchen at the café (where the mice are). They actually are quite good at killing mice: they have efficiently de-rodented a woodpile in my backyard.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

Not even through the back door?

  4. R C Dean

I, too, am engaged in rodent genocide at Fin de Salida*, which had a pretty serious mouse infestation when we bought it. I have six bait stations around the house. When I first put them out in early November, they were almost emptied in less than a week (each holds six poison chunks), and I found several mouse corpses near the house. Now, we’re down to about 2 -3 poison chunks a day.

*the new place is, in fact, at the end of the road

    • Common Tater

Maybe you have a leaky pipe or someway they are getting water?

      • R C Dean

No, there’s just a shitload of mice around here, and the house sat empty for probably 6 – 8 months before we bought it.

Also, that should be “2-3 poison chunks a week”.

      • Fourscore

I have mice(s) in the garages but the black plastic traps (and peanut butter bait) are relentless. Also don’t let one snap on your finger.

      • The Last American Hero

That thing makes them ride sparky for 2 minutes? Because rats can “restart” their hearts in the event of a heart attack?

I don’t know which of those ideas freaks me out more.

Thankfully our vile population explosion over the last three years has ended.

Combination of weather and plowing the fields did it.

I have only seen one vole in the last seven or eight months.

Our two new drop off litter mates are some serious mousers so I’m hoping they keep the population around the house down. It’s a mild winter but they have killed four field mice so far that we know about.

      • Threedoor

        Vole. Dang it.

  5. Stinky Wizzleteats

“Democrats Vow not to Fund ICE After Shooting”
Looked to be not be a good shoot, if there is such a thing, but what idiot puts themself out there and gets in an avoidable scuffle with cops with a piece on them? It’s not quite asking to get shot but it’s close. As for not funding ICE, there’s a lot of noise on this issue from the (relatively few) loons on their side but I don’t think that’s translated over to the public at large yet.

    • R C Dean

I dunno. Haven’t watched the video yet. Much is being made, I gather, of “5-6 agents had him on the ground”, but I don’t think the size of the dogpile really makes any difference if he had a gun in his hand.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

The guy was definitely disarmed, the vid shows one of the ICE agents with the gun in his hand and it’s the same gun as in the pic. He was shot a couple of seconds later. A tremendous fuck up on ICE’s part but those are going to happen and it’s all the more reason to fold like a beach chair if you’re armed and jumped on by the fuzz.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

One of the vids I should say. There are some very inconclusive videos out there too.

      • Old Man With Candy

I invoke the 48 hour rule while admitting that it sure doesn’t look like the guy had the piece in his hand. And he was getting a beat-down so if he DID pull it, I can’t really blame him for trying to take a government goon down with him.

It really does look like a pre-TDS-Balko-Level bad shoot.

      • Drake

The Sig seems to have discharged after an officer pulled it off the dumbass. The question is, was the trigger pulled or did it do the Sig thing and just go off?

A Sig non-negligent but accidental discharge seems an appropriate way to start a civil war.

      • rhywun

Good shoot or not doesn’t matter to either side.

One side wants martyrs and will riot harder either way.

The other side will argue that bringing a gun into the midst of law enforcement operations is… not wise, and shit happens.

Chaos and violence will continue to rise either way.

      • Nephilium

        Drake:

I’ve seen it reported as an unintentional discharge, but 48-hour rule holds for me.

      • Chafed

Definitely the 48 hour rule on this one. It is notable it was his cellphone in his hand.

    • rhywun

“Democrats Vow not to Fund ICE After Shooting”

Or the Dems could really grow a pair and vow to repeal all aspects of border control and national sovereignty. Shoot for the moon, guys.

      • Drake

How is that not saying it clearly? Without ICE, no deportations.

Meanwhile, Chuck Grassley and other dinosaurs are blocking the Save Act to make sure it happens.

When it does, why would I stay here to be robbed of my wealth so it can be distributed to the Third World arriving here with a sizable cut going to my political enemies?

When it does, why would I stay here to be robbed of my wealth so it can be distributed to the Third World arriving here with a sizable cut going to my political enemies?

I struggle to think of any place that is less bad. The west is all in on this. Russia and China are repressive, and most of the rest is the third world that we dont want imported here.

      • rhywun

True but guess who runs everything and gets all the media attention nowadays?

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Nah, it’s possible to care about and not like people getting shot even if it was justified and in this case it arguably wasn’t.

  6. Rat on a train

The indoor cats a cuddling. I haven’t seen the outdoor cat. Maybe later it will brave the few inches of snow that frighten humans so much.

    • Gender Traitor

Our two toms are strictly indoors, but I’m worried about the little female stray/feral who comes around almost every day to eat. She yells at us, but usually won’t let us get close. She has a couple of potential hidey-holes on our back patio, and we put food out there to attract her (and possibly trash pandas, but whatcha gonna do?) Hope she made her way there before the snow got too deep.

It helps that I don’t know WTF the stated two suggestions are supposed to look like.

      I see bad AI.

      • CPRM

c’mon, cars with crooked oval tires are very popular.

    • DrOtto

I see that guy from Renegade.

        Lorenzo Lamas?

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

A fake car in the fake background with some very jacked up fake wheels.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

And, damn, look at the fingers, poor girls must be maintenance workers in an 1870s textile mill. Do better AI.

    • Suthenboy

      Wick.
Of course tests like this are BS.

And that’s why the Sundance Festival had to move to Boulder.

Your refusal to thread makes for some amusing non-sequiturs.

    Vulnerable

Just when Canada thought it was getting its military house in order by finally meeting NATO spending targets, President Donald Trump’s designs on Greenland have exposed the vulnerability of the vast, underpopulated and undergunned Canadian Arctic.

Trump’s Greenland threats have turned the Arctic from a distant, long-term concern into an urgent strategic test for Canada, exposing how a region long treated as remote is now entangled in disputes over shipping routes, sovereignty and alliance politics.

Successive Canadian governments have long understood that melting polar ice has left the Arctic more accessible — and more vulnerable to Russian and Chinese interest — but have done little to counter threats traditionally seen as unlikely.

When the Chinamen come sweeping down from the north in their electric armored personnel carriers they’ll be welcomed with open arms.

    | Democrats Vow not to Fund ICE After Shooting

Can we get a bit more ambitious and just completely get rid of Homeland Security? Combine that with an all out push by the Feds to get rid of most aspects of state and municipal “sanctuary laws” and have the original INS back to mostly conduct internal enforcement of immigration laws in jails and prisons. Somehow in the 1980’s the federal government was able to get states to all raise their drinking laws to 21 by denying them federal highway funds. I don’t see how that couldn’t be applied to sanctuary jurisdictions.

    • Grummun

I don’t see how that couldn’t be applied to sanctuary jurisdictions.

::Justice Boasberg has entered the chat::

      • KSuellington

Sure, I have no doubt that there are Dem appointed judges that would rule against them. It still doesn’t make sense to me from both a political and a procedural aspect why they wouldn’t want to start an all out push to do so. It takes time to bring it up the judicial ladder.

    • Threedoor

I want to get rid of the federal DOT and the federal gas tax.

That carrot and whip needs to go away.

Flaherty represents a business group proposing a port in the community of Qikiqtaaluk (population 600) on Baffin Island in the northern territory of Nunavut.

He’s doing it wrong. He should pitch it as a prototype moonbase. Maybe he can snooker Bezos into putting up the cash.

Can we get a bit more ambitious and just completely get rid of Homeland Security?

    Hear hear.

    *bangs coffee cup on desk*

    • KSuellington

It would also be the smart political move. Which is why the Repubs won’t do it (among other reasons). But imagine if they were the ones on offense, going after Dems for supporting half measures and not standing against G Dubs creation of Homeland Security. “If ICE is the Gestapo then what is Homeland Security?”

    • Threedoor

But think of all the terrorists the TSA have stopped!

  32. DEG

She stopped calling one day and although I like to think it was because she finally contacted mental health services, my intuition tells me she more likely found a mystic who didn’t constantly read her the number of her community mental health team.

I’m going to go out on a limb here, but I think your intuition is right.

Where’s Beto? Shouldn’t he be running for that Senate seat?

    • Rat on a train

He’s taking time off. It’s one thing he can do.

  35. Muzzled Woodchipper

Man, fuck our weather forecasters. They told me 8-12” of snow. We got about 2”, and a bunch of ice.

    • SarumanTheWoefullyIgnorant

Not down in SE PA. It’s really coming down now. I just hope it doesn’t turn into freezing rain.

      • juris imprudent

Not freezing rain, but definitely sleet. Wind driven sleet.

  36. Threedoor

Are the birthdays a repeat or did I just see a glitch in the matrix?

I do have three black cats running around the house so I expect the latter.

    Appeasement! Surrender!

The new policy document views China — which the Biden administration saw as a top adversary — as a settled force in the Indo-Pacific region that only needs to be deterred from dominating the U.S. or its allies.

The goal “is not to dominate China; nor is it to strangle or humiliate them,” the document says. It later adds, “This does not require regime change or some other existential struggle.”

“President Trump seeks a stable peace, fair trade, and respectful relations with China,” it says, which follows efforts to climb down from a trade war sparked by the administration’s sky-high tariffs. It says it will “open a wider range of military-to-military communications” with China’s army.

Obama and Biden knew how to keep the Yellow Peril at bay.

    • Suthenboy

Yeah….this is a communique intercepted from an alternate universe…..right?

      • juris imprudent

Non Player [character] Reality – checks out.

    • Gustave Lytton

There’s a track record. Trump’s Chief of Staff last time around was all about military to military communication.

  38. The Late P Brooks

The U.S. already has confirmed that it will reduce its troop presence on NATO’s borders with Ukraine, with allies expressing concern that the Trump administration might drastically cut their numbers and leave a security vacuum as European countries confront an increasingly aggressive Russia.

    “Mommy don’t leave us.”

    • Rat on a train

      Defend us you evil imperialists.

    • creech

What happened? In 1964, I remember our ROTC instructor, recently returned from a tour in Germany, said the Bundeswehr could beat up anyone and was equal conventionally to the Russians. It was led in those days by senior officers who had been junior officers in the Werhrmacht and knew what a real army could do given adequate equipment.

      • Threedoor

Subsequent generations of Germans have been neutered and lobotomized.

  39. Suthenboy

I am not sure I really give a damned if they do but it looks increasingly like we have been paying the whole world since the end of wwII to not go at each other’s throats. If we stop paying NATO to pretend to have armies they will turn Europe in a field of corpses…..agaiin.
Goddamned monkeys – screaming, slinging shit and bashing each other in the head. Despite their smug arrogance the Eurotards are NOT civilized people.

    • creech

Other than the Rooskies, which major Euro nations are just itching to get at each other’s throats?

      • Suthenboy

When we quit paying them….all of them. Just watch.

    • Threedoor

      Let them.
Maybe the next clash will purge the invaders they let in as well.
