They were 15 years old (littermates). The female had bad arthritis and was basically on hospice for six months before she just . . . quit. Our male didn’t really show his age much until he got to 7,000 feet of altitude, and then his pulmonary hypertension (basically, bad blood flow in the lungs) flared up and he declined pretty quickly. At 15, every good day is a gift, and every bad day is just a preview.
But yeah, there’s definitely a hole in the house. Today I have to pack up all the dog stuff; this is the first time in our entire marriage (27 years) we haven’t had a dog.
That’s rough, that is a lot of energy missing from the house.

I’ve played against that team a bunch of times. They have a good program.
Our team will play against college or high school kids sometimes, usual the they use it as a fundraiser. But it also gets our team some exposure, and it’s a lot of fun. Last time we were at the airport, a woman saw our sleds and stopped to tell us her son was in college and played against us years ago, but she remembers how fun it was.

2. If it were about innate preferences for leisure, French people exposed to higher wages would not work more. But we know that e.g. French cross-border workers in Luxembourg and Switzerland work as much as locals! This suggests constraints on hours worked in France.
Part of the population democratically imposes very high marginal tax rates on labor earnings; as a result, people end up working less than elsewhere. From a representative agent perspective, this may look like a pref for leisure, but I think it misses the political economy!

But even if you consider both these programs welfare, which is not ridiculous to do, it is meaningless because the immigrants unless they return home immediately before retirement will also all use this welfare. But if they are using more when young, it is an issue. This is the same in Europe. The idea is to be net positive 20-65 and you will be net negative young and old. But if immigrant are negative in their prime they will be even more negative overall. Also I feel that welfare usage by immigrant numbers are not showing everything.
Social Security was sold as a retirement investment. Pay in your entire working life, get some of it back at a terrible rate of return in retirement.
