Warning: long one today.
You’ll recall the little incident at our shop a few weeks back where a crazy guy who had been trespassed for stealing came back in, and when told to leave by 10b0t, blew a gasket and started screaming and throwing stuff pulled off the counter. This included our credit card reader which 10b0t thoughtfully blocked with his head, preventing it from being badly damaged. And we sadly lost our tip jar which became glass shards and bouncing coins. We reported this to the police, 10b0t signed a document, and they reviewed our security cam footage.
Heard nothing further, but the guy was almost certainly released quickly. Our assumption was that he’s skating since his mom is a somewhat prominent professor whom I know reasonably well and a longtime resident. Nothing from the cops, DA, or anything, so likely the matter was dropped, we thought.
I got an email from his mom last week. “Can I meet with you regarding a non-technical issue?” Note that his mom is a crazy lady, I mean CRAZY. Does a lot of acid besides the daily weed and has the deserved reputation of a… character.
I went to her office pretty much knowing what this had to be about. And I found out that despite no-one talking to us, prosecution was moving ahead. So as the crazy guy’s lifelong enabler, she wanted to somehow convince me to exert influence to have 10b0t talk to his public defender to help him get the charges dropped. In the course of our conversation, I learned that this was not exactly the crazy guy’s first rodeo, he had been arrested several times before on various petty crime charges (larceny, vandalism, assault…). “He’s on a medication that is injected every 30 days, and it starts wearing off before his next shot. All of those incidents happened within 3 or 4 days before the next scheduled dose. We’re working on getting his meds adjusted, but he doesn’t belong behind bars.” She offered, variously, written and oral apologies from him and money, supporting her plea for mercy with a sheaf of character reference letters she collected from various citizens from the last time he was arrested.
I told her I’d pass on the contact info for the crazy guy’s PD and suggest that 10b0t talk to him and that I wasn’t there and wasn’t directly involved so couldn’t do anything else. Nor was I inclined to.
What I didn’t say was that if 10b0t talks to the PD, he would likely make his feelings clear: sorry if crazy guy’s brain is congenitally fucked up but this guy has no business walking around loose and we would push for the strongest prosecution we could. And if he tried any sort of retaliation, it would go considerably worse than what the legal system had in store for him. And because WebDom acted quickly to grab Sweet Baby James and get away from the situation, the baby wasn’t hurt in the melee, and if he had been, the crazy guy would have been the crazy dead guy before he could get out our front door.
So to all and sundry: AITA?
And while we’re on the subject of assholes, birthdays today include a guy who had his meet-cute when a cannon blew up; a rather tense guy; someone who would be right at home in the contemporary US government; a guy, who despite the rumors, I never saw pitch; a guy who I did see pitch; possibly a worse presidential candidate than Kamala; a visionary who made his fortunate upsetting the right people and serving the rest of us well; a guy who made all of us laugh our asses off; an actual three year letterman and a truly decent fellow; a guy who let politics taint his science; the most annoying Star Trek character ever; the real-life Danny Chung; a tennis player who seemed like she’d be fun to hang out with; a guy who’d be happy to tell you that you’re WRONG; and a dimwitted grifter with a record of success rivalling Stacy Abrams.
Links today are no more uplifting.

Prog rock really never got better than this. If you play guitar and would like to permanently lose the use of your fingers, try playing that 16th note ostinado for as long as Fripp does. Oh, and excellent music. That is one of my favorite, KC tunes, and one of my favorite performances of it. When I was dating a dancer, she did her final work in modern dance to it.
the most annoying Star Trek character ever
Not any of the numerous characters from the latest series?
RoaT, the latest series isn’t Star Trek, so they are out of the running.
I would pick Wesley from TNG. The Creator’s Pet trope was originally named after him.
Nepotism for the win with Wesley!
Neelix? Heck, anybody from the cast of Voyager? The doctor on Enterprise? Data in the movie era? Spock post-Khan? Any character in Abrams trek?
My main objection to Neelix is that he was banging a four year old.
“Objection”. *wink*
But yeah, it is hands-down Neelix.
My roommate and I cheered when he left the series with 2 or 3 eps left and then he fucking showed up again in the finale. 😠
Q from TNG.
Anyone not from the the original series.
That’s one that should have died when the Shat left.
Not in this circumstance.

We’re Glibs. By definition we’re assholes.
But not for this.

Happy birthday Sugar Free!
a tennis player who seemed like she’d be fun to hang out with
Happy birthday Patty Schnyder!
Not Renée Richards ?
Though I bet Steffi Graf would be fun to drink with.
Patty Schnyder had a thing with an orange juice guru.
There’s also a great story from when she was playing Conchita Martinez once. Martinez, like a lot of players, had superstitions, in this case wanting to serve with the same ball again if she got an unreturned serve. Schnyder got so fed up with it that one time Martinez aced her and Schnyder collected the ball and refused to give it to the ball kid to give back to her opponent!
Needless to say, they didn’t quite have a cordial handshake at the net after the match.
“AITA?”
No.
“Note that his mom is a crazy lady, I mean CRAZY. Does a lot of acid besides the daily weed and has the deserved reputation of a… character.”
But is she hot?
No.
She’s got an adult son. Obviously too old for you.
Does she reek of patchouli and stale body odor and teach classes about patriarchy?
So to all and sundry: AITA?
No. Crazy guy and his enabler are the assholes.
Is the somewhat prominent professor’s boss aware that she is a drug fiend? Or is that worth bonus points in academia.
She probably just has tenure…
Oh, that. JFC I am so glad I didn’t get sucked into that world of crazy.
Tenured in humanities seems like an awesome gig. Other than most of your coworkers…
Tenured in Engineering.
Tenure was a mistake from the word go.
A prominent tenured professor probably has enough scratch to pay for inpatient treatment for her son, at least until he gets his meds stabilized…
Eh, humanities profs do not bring in enough money to actually be paid that well. Usually 65-80K/per.
They are literally a dime a dozen, with no grant cash.

The link says “northeast Ohio”, so there’s a market opening for Neph.
Yep, they’re talking about the Cleveland market. Off the top of my head, BrewDog has still been running drag brunches, but that’s about it. Not sure if they’ll keep doing that after being bought by Tilray.
The article is a whole whine about how hard it is to make money as a drag queen, and how they’re underpaid and undervalued. I’m pretty sure they’re overpaid and overvalued at this point.
Saw the same in pics out of NYC. I don’t get why the hive mind went there. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anger is a non-standard reaction to the first robin of spring for most people, but it is very on brand for you. Just remember when the inquest starts this post will be evidence!
What, pray tell, do “most people” feel at the return of an irritant?
I’m going out on a limb here, albeit one with a great deal of poetic and literary support, to say most people don’t consider robins an irritant.
But who killed Cock Robin?
Poets are infamous for having mental health issues.
But who killed Cock Robin?
That is what the inquest will try to determine! and the evidence so far points to UCS!
My mentor used to “curate” the bird population in his yard with a couple of volleys of birdshot.
Cowbirds were the main villains.
Don’t complain. We have vultures who occasionally roost in the woods by our house. Last week one of them unloaded my car. White splots and streaks everywhere on roof and hood and windshield. Took half an hour to wash off (and you need to, the shit is literally corrosive).
Why do we tolerate the buzzards, might you ask? Because they’re the ultimate dead critter cleanup crew (out in the open, that is. The possums and coyotes reserve the woodland carcasses for themselves) and they’re beautiful high up in the sky.
With a fruiting mulberry tree in my yard, the house, driveway, and any vehicles parked in the driveway will be splattered purple for at least one month a year.
Keep a solid coat of wax and be vigilant. Bird poop is the worst.
a record of success rivalling Stacy Abrams
Crockett did actually win higher office than Abrams.
House Rep in a populous state is lower bar than a statewide election. Most of them are rotton boroughs.
Abrams never made it above a state House seat.
She’s the real governor not that pretender …
Abrams keeps making national news and scares the hell out of Repubs.
I won’t say that she’s the boogieman but she’s gets a lot of votes, just not quite enough.
They both won a local election, lost a statewide.
I thought rotten boroughs had relatively low populations, rather than just being locked in for a certain party.
Those are English Boroughs.
I was using Metric.

“In 2026, there is no coherent symbol of feminist resistance. There was no Women’s March on the day of Trump’s second inauguration. At protests against the administration, the handmaid costume is still present, but her power is significantly diminished. The only accessory protesters wear these days that conveys any tone of seriousness are heavy-duty chemical face masks, designed to counter the onslaught of teargas disseminated from hooded men who stalk the perimeters of elementary schools, hospitals and churches on the days when they aren’t busy calling women bitches and shooting them dead.
The escalation in gendered violence over these last few months has served as a grim reminder of the laws of narrative propulsion, famously espoused by Anton Chekhov: if a gun is onstage at the beginning of a play, it must necessarily go off by the end. Similarly, you do not reimagine a political party under which women exist only to please men if you do not eventually plan to use that party to extinguish the voices and lives of the women who dare suggest an alternative. From this angle, the birth of the tradwife could be seen as a quite literal gun to the head. One would not create and become obsessed with a fake woman if they did not already wish the real ones were dead.”

A new way to measure poverty shows the US falling behind Europe
https://share.google/84ZX8Y2c8BuvMgSut
However, Olivier Sterck emphasises that viewing poverty as a spectrum changes the conversation. It reveals what poverty lines miss and why inequality matters so much.
According to Sterck’s research, published on SSRN, an online repository for academic work, “average poverty” is defined as the average time needed to earn $1. “The measure is inclusive, distribution-sensitive, decomposable, and aligns with how both experts and the public conceptualise poverty,” he says.
As of 2025, the time needed to earn $1 is 63 minutes in the US. This is about twice the average across Germany, France and the UK.
In Germany, Europe’s largest economy, it takes 26 minutes. In France, the figure is 31 minutes, while in the UK it rises slightly to 34 minutes.
i knew it you bunch of poors
stupid wordpress
“We couldn’t compete honestly, so we made up a nonsense metric that gave us an answer that made us feel better” – more accurate headline.
something something lie with statistics
I read that article, I still do not understand the metric. the average person here earns more than there, but somehow it takes longer? and how do you derive a 63 minutes per dollar rate?
“Soucre: I made it the hell up”
this is written by the author sort of explaining more.
https://theconversation.com/measuring-poverty-on-a-spectrum-instead-of-an-arbitrary-line-conveys-a-more-accurate-picture-of-inequality-271912
Average poverty builds on a simple intuition. If someone I’ll call Alex earns half as much as someone else I’ll call Barbara, then Barbara is twice as rich as Alex and Alex is twice as poor as Barbara.
Similar inverse relationships are widespread in other fields: Pace is the reciprocal of speed in running as resistance and conductance are in electricity.
This means that poverty can be defined as the inverse of income, and its unit is simply inverted. If incomes are measured in dollars per day, poverty is measured in days per dollar.
Average poverty therefore captures something very concrete: the average number of minutes, hours or days that it takes to get $1 in income.
For these purposes, income includes earnings from work, government benefits and other sources of money, and it is averaged among all family members.
But this makes no sense and is mathematically impossible. If we have a higher per capita gdp, we manifestly have a shorter time to earn one dollar unless you play some games with time
i assume the how the adjustments for purchase parity are made matter. Also there are inequality adjustments I believe and it matter how those are made.
Using a sample size of 1, it takes me 0.975 minutes working time to earn $1.
If we include non-working time, it takes me 4.38 minutes to earn $1. But I could be working during that time, however I choose not to.
verage poverty directly stems from Inverse Proportionality (A4) and the intuition
that earning half as much means being twice as poor. – basically this should show more unequal countries are more poor.
Intuition?
viewing poverty as a spectrum
That academic is on a spectrum alright.
Intuition?
part of the paper he did surveys of some people asking them stuff like if you make 1 dollar and hour are you twice as poor as someone making 2 dollars an hour.
That whole section is useless and should be thrown out, along with anyone who decided to include it and anyone who reviewed or published it.
The answer is simple: inequality.
Simple answers for simple minds. The man has a PhD in stupidity.
For instance, the US and Switzerland have about the same average
income, about $83 per person per day. Yet, average poverty in the US is 3.4 times
higher than in Switzerland (85 versus 25 minutes per $) because inequality is much
higher in the US than in Switzerland (4.9 versus 1.4 days to get mean income).
Sorry, pie, but that is a nonsense metric, designed by people who want to push a position rather than deal with reality.
And there you have it.
I can safely ignore anything else that person has to say.
Or it could just be a trendy name commies like you use to advance the anti-family propaganda you’ve been spinning for decades.
Tradwives – traitorous bitches!!! We’ll teach them what they need to conform to. /love-filled feminists

“The conviction in Texas of nine activists on terrorism and other charges earlier this month sets an alarming precedent: the Trump administration can crack down on leftwing groups and label them “domestic terrorists”.
The case was widely seen as a major test of the Trump administration’s efforts to punish protesters and leftwing views. The charges came after a protest outside of an ICE facility outside of Fort Worth last year. Activists planned to set off fireworks outside of the facility in solidarity with those detained inside, traveling with a cache of automatic weapons and body armor they said was for self-defense against counter-protesters. Once they got there, a small group broke away and began vandalizing cars in the parking lot, spray painting graffiti, slashing tires on a government van, and breaking a security camera. A police officer arrived on the scene and drew his weapon at those in the parking lot, one of the activists opened fire with an AR-15 and hit the police officer in the shoulder. He ultimately survived.”

Is that another “spurious accusation of terrorism”, The Guardian?
Charlottesville has entered the chat….
traveling with a cache of automatic weapons
In violation of how many state and federal laws?
It’s the Guardian, are we sure these are fully automatic and not semiautomatic?
No need to consider, just make them stew in it.
Not that it matters, but I’ve been told by a law enforcement friend down that way that at least one of their ARs had an unregistered Lightning Link installed. That makes it a machine gun, both technically and under the law.
Also, the ‘fireworks’ they intended to set off were packed into glass jars.
And the Weathermen have re-entered the chat.

“Johnson is not currently facing any charges in connection with the shooting of the dog. When Johnson spoke with a reporter back in 2019 about becoming Pennsylvania’s youngest magistrate judge, he discussed having to do so due to his age and race when he threw his hat into the ring at age 26.
“You know, they would laugh at me, and then they tell me that I’m too young,” Johnson said in 2019. “First advice I ever got from anyone was, one, you’re black, two, you’re young, and they are going to split the votes, and you are not going to win. That’s the first thing that someone told me when I mentioned it.”
Johnson was previously arrested for an alleged role in a reported robbery, but after a polygraph test, police determined they had the wrong man. Johnson was also reportedly arrested for his role in a reported hazing incident at his college fraternity, but was later exonerated.”

STEVE SMITH EXHIBIT HIGH WILLINGNESS
Totally unexpected: Igor Tudor out at Spurs.

He belongs in the ground.
Or fed to a pack of coyotes. They’ll disappear a carcass in no time at all. So I’m told. Allegedly.
So to all and sundry: AITA?
You heartless bastard. Why be vindictively cruel to the village idiot and her son?
So to all and sundry: AITA?
No. I feel the same way about the guy who hit me 6 months ago. I think my MIL was taken aback by how aggressively I wanted to sue him. Because “sometimes people don’t pay attention when they’re driving.” Sure. But in this case, there was stopped traffic and tail lights for miles. He didn’t even try to slow down. He was driving like a reckless jackass. I don’t even like to use the word “accident” here. In Indiana, you can look up court cases, and this guy has 6-8, mostly speeding and driving without insurance, but also cheating at gambling. The crash happened in Illinois so I don’t know how they charged him.
This guy was lucky he didn’t kill me. He’s lucky there wasn’t a kid in the back seat or someone in the passenger seat. Unfortunately, the worst that will happen is he’ll have some tickets in Illinois, and my insurance will attempt to collect something from him.
In your case, the mom is assuming this is the worst her son will ever do, that it won’t be something worse the next time. I don’t think that’s a good assumption.
Discrimination
Those disagreements came to a head in March 2023, when the chief judge of her court launched an investigation. Newman was 95 at the time.
The appellate court wanted to explore her fitness to serve. But Judge Newman refused to sit for an exam with experts the court selected. Her lawyer said she wanted to choose her own doctors, who gave her a clean bill of health.
“The idea that she’s not capable of doing her judicial duties is nonsense,” said her attorney John Vecchione, senior litigation counsel at the nonprofit New Civil Liberties Alliance.
To this day, no court has found Newman is incompetent. That question has been paused while attorneys fight over whether the judge has received due process. It’s a long time to be off the bench, Vecchione said.
Clinging to power until her last breath. That proves she’s capable of being a judge.
You’ve come a long way, baby
This is the terrifying moment American MMA fighter Maycee Barber was left flat on her back and unconscious after one of the most brutal knockouts in UFC history on Saturday night.
Barber, 27, is one of the sport’s best female talents but she was on the end of a shocking KO by Mexican rival Alexa Grasso at UFC Fight Night 271 in Seattle, with fans fearing for her health after an incredibly violent end to the bout.
In scenes shown live on television across America and beyond, Barber appeared to be knocked out cold by a punch midway through the first round, only for her opponent to pounce and begin to choke her out.
That’s entertainment.
