IFLA: The “Concrete” Edition of the Horoscope for the Week of April 12

When I heard this live, they used the same drum crashes that are in “The Boxer.” It was awesome.

As this gets posted, I should be driving home from my first steel/second overall match of the season. As much as I (generally) hate the people here (NY here, not Glibs here), this place has excellent outdoors to stand around in waiting for one’s turn to turn money into noise and smoke.

The beginning of the week’s skies are quiet, with Not much happening until there is a conjunction of the moon and Mercury on Wednesday (which is also the day corresponding to Mercury) so either make use of that be deliberately changing something or being on the lookout for wackiness. Thursday and Friday indicate that something is up war-wise, and Friday also has a new Moon which is either good or bad depending on what story you want to tell your client.

Aries: Queen of Swords – Widowhood, female sadness and embarrassment, absence, sterility, mourning, privation, separation.

Taurus: 2 of Coins reversed – Pretending to be happy, composition, correspondence.

Gemini: 6 of Coins reversed – Desire, cupidity, envy, jealousy, illusion.

Cancer: 8 of Cups reversed – Great joy, happiness, feasting.

Leo: 10 of Cups – Contentment, repose of the entire heart, perfection of human love and friendship.

Virgo: The Moon reversed – Instability, inconstancy, silence, lesser degrees of deception and error.

Libra: 6 of Swords – Bringing trouble with you, journey by water, way, envoy, expedient measures.

Scorpio: The Chariot reversed – Riot, quarrel, dispute, litigation, defeat.

Sagittarius: 5 of Coins reversed – Disorder, chaos, ruin, discord, profligacy.

Capricorn: The Star – Loss, theft, privation, abandonment but also hope and bright prospects,

Aquarius: King of Cups reversed –  Dishonest, double-dealing man, a dipsomaniac, roguery, exaction, injustice, vice, scandal, pillage, considerable loss.

Pisces: 7 of Swords reversed – Good advice, counsel, instruction, slander, babbling, a crazy plan that just might work but instead will completely fail.

For Moj and other Leonard Cohen haters.

Well, I *do* meet my wife at the bar after work every Monday and pretend to listen about her day.

    • Fourscore

Back in the day, my wife was go-getter.

I would take her to work, then at the end of her workday, go get her

      That’s just sad.

Haven’t heard of it. I remember having (likely undeserved?) mini-love for Snake Eyes, 1998. I think I thought it’d be like a possibly underrated flick with Johnny Depp: “The 1995 thriller “Nick of Time” stars Johnny Depp as Gene Watson, an accountant forced to assassinate a politician within 90 minutes to save his kidnapped daughter.”

The only fun thing is it’s shot in real time, so the 90 minutes on screen is the actual amount Depp has. I don’t know if I should like that one, either, been a long time, but I enjoy special little flavors like that.

I’m reversing this shit. Well, the pretend part. Rather profound reverse in my base mental state, which is persistently chipper and cheerful, but it’s hard (and I’m unwilling this weekend) to shake the positive switch that’s been flipped.
*Meijer in-store, where I did no picking (and may only rarely do) and had a chill day in the back pickup dept. Everyone was talkative, chill and helpful. And I know the basics, so the system’s easy. No contracted drivers! Only one order at a time! *squeeee!*

And they’re all chill with scheduling. Got this week set up and’ll easily switch to a Sat or Sun shift a week (or every other, maybe) while my remote grading contract starts on April 20. So something professionally in my wheelhouse and some extra money and a gig to fall on afterwards, where I’ll be more comfy looking for meaningful long-term work.

I’ve been on this kick for a week, so yep, I’m trying to not be redundant. I don’t have to actively search for work, and the work I’m in, I’m used to and the fall-back is quite comfy. Having folk I legit may actually hang out with is a profound difference, in and of itself. Different dimension I wasn’t expecting. Got a sub coming here next week, which I think you’ll enjoy, and thinking of what thoughts I should get down today.

Stayed away from yesterday’s 2pm Cubs game so I could rewatch it fresh at 10pm. And, uh. Well. I’m glad I watched it. Baseball’s a great real-life sport: Even the best team is gonna lose 60 damn times a year. Get used to it. Got a zero real responsibility day today and another game in an hour.

Will be good to be a bit personally productive today, but it’s rare I get to sit back and think: ‘Well. For now, there isn’t any more I can do to prepare for the next couple of months. It’s sorted.’

Cherish those fickle, fleeting moments, y’all.

Excellent music selections today. Jeanette has an incredible range, and is crazy as a loon. Saw her at a tiny record store for a noon day performance when I was in college, as I couldn’t get in to the show that night (under age in a college town), still, a smoking show.

The developer of a major Massachusetts offshore wind farm is suing its turbine manufacturer seeking to force it to stay with the project.

Vineyard Wind filed a lawsuit Wednesday in Massachusetts against GE Renewables. That comes after the parent company for GE Renewables said it would be terminating its contracts for turbine services and maintenance at the end of April.

GE Vernova says Vineyard Wind owes it $300 million for work it performed. But Vineyard Wind counters that the manufacturer remains on the hook for about $545 million to make up for a catastrophic turbine blade collapse in July 2024 and the delays that caused.

Fiberglass fragments of a blade broke apart and began washing onto Nantucket beaches in July 2024 during the peak of tourist season. GE Vernova agreed to pay $10.5 million in a settlement to compensate island businesses that suffered losses.

    ——-

According to the lawsuit, GE Renewables is the only company able to perform the remaining work, and it would be virtually impossible to find another turbine supplier willing to take its place. A hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

GE Vernova has said that insufficient bonding at one of its factories in Canada was responsible for the blade coming apart and that there was no indication of a design flaw. Sixty-eight out of the 72 blades that had been installed at Vineyard Wind at the time were removed and replaced. Vineyard Wind said that set the project behind nearly two years.

The Trump administration has been particularly critical of the project because of the blade failure.

    We need more of this.

    • Threedoor

How did island businesses suffer losses?

      Were their owners feelings hurt?

    • Threedoor

Damn that stock is crazy high.
Wish I had bought more GE before it split into health and Verona or whatever it is now.

    Full speed ahead!

Despite EV chargers being installed at a record pace, Toyota continues to bet part of its future on hydrogen fuel cells. In addition to continuing production of the Mirai, Toyota has joined Volvo and Daimler in their effort to replace diesels with fuel cell heavy trucks. According to a Daimler press release, Toyota will become a third equal partner in Cellcentric, a company that Daimler and Volvo founded to develop, produce, and commercialize fuel cell systems for heavy-duty commercial vehicles.

When Cellcentric was founded five years ago, it expected to begin production of fuel cell trucks by 2025, with hydrogen becoming more popular sometime between 2027 and 2030. That didn’t happen, and today, Cellcentric’s website gives a more reasonable target of 2050. The company has developed the NextGen fuel cell, making significant efficiency improvements over previous models and a continuous output of 500 horsepower.

While Cellcentric already knows how to build a fuel cell, adding Toyota’s expertise to the mix can only improve their work further. While Toyota may have oversold the real world usability of the Mirai enough to get sued for it, the car itself is quite good. Fuel cell cars make less sense as EV charging stations propagate like rabbits and charge faster than ever, but fuel cell trucks may beat diesel in efficiency, particularly as gas and diesel prices continue to climb due to our ill-advised activities in Iran. Prices in Europe, where Daimler and Volvo already own much of the heavy truck industry, are even higher, which would position them for success if not for one small issue.

It’s a race with fusion. The suspense is killing me.

    • Chafed

I don’t know if fuel cells will ever make commercial sense but Toyota is pretty pragmatic. During Biden’s EV push its CEO repeatedly said EVs weren’t ready for the mass market. I can see where experimenting with a different fuel source is a good use of R&D money even if it never pans out.
