House (1977)

This is a legendary haunted house film from Japan that gets so crazy that you start to feel like you are in an alternate reality. I first watched this film on an old TV, from a bootleg videotape at a friend’s house. It was amazing. That was probably mid-eighties. I didn’t realize then how lucky I was to see it, there were probably only a few bootlegs around at the time. The film wasn’t officially released in the states until 2009.

So what is it about? I turn to Reelreviewsandrecommendations for details:

HOUSE resembles THE EVIL DEAD, not in look or style, but in the pure level of inventiveness on display. It’s a film that’s full of imagination and energy despite the often languid pacing, and the story of a group of schoolgirls visiting a crumbling mansion in the deep countryside is only the start of it. In one of the film’s bizarre highlights, a guy is transformed into a pile of bananas. It’s that kind of film.

Trivia! Director Nobuhiko Ôbayashi wanted ideas from a child’s imagination, not from adults who would only come up with variations of what had gone before, so he consulted his daughter Chigumi. She began with a nightmare she had of being attacked by her mirror reflection. Many of the remaining ways the girls are attacked by the House were her ideas as well. These include the mattresses, the head from the well. and the piano. So, essentially, this film was co-written by a 12-year-old Japanese girl, who shares screenwriting credit. – Courtesy IMDB

Well, this is as much as I can write today. Work is brutal so I will have a very brief post for tonight. I hope all of you enjoy!

So watch! Or don’t! Everything is voluntary, I appreciate all the suggestions for upcoming films, so I will do some kind of audience appreciation series again soon. It has been crazy around here, so I have not been able to make any advance schedule.

Bonus! Original Kamen Rider!

At some point when I was not looking, Kamen Rider was added to TUBI. It’s Ultraman on crazy pills, and a perfect match to tonight’s film. Here is the very first episode. Of all things, Kamen Rider was an early pick up from Amazon, who paid for a reboot on the series. And it was a cool take. If you have Amazon you can click on this link and see their sponsored version. Otherwise there is about a billion different versions on TUBI now.

    You were lucky.

I knew a lot of amazing people in the eighties, and I think we all took each other for granted. No telling what would have happened if we all stayed together.

      • Common Tater

Ha! I thought that was going to be a house track.

      • rhywun

        I’m not THAT gay.

      • Evan from Evansville

I’d love to be friends with him and Stephen Fry.

    • R.J.

      That’s also really great.

      • Common Tater

        I think I’ll watch it now…

    Two things:
The real crazy stuff starts at 32 minutes in, if you get bored with exposition.
    There are boobs.
I think that answers the main questions that may come up tonight.

    • Aloysious

      Man boobs?

Is Chuck U . Schumer in this?

I’m starving and work is driving me crazy.

      Carry on.

Would you like a jelly baby?

      • UnCivilServant

It’s true what they say – the Evil One eats babies.

      • Sean

You mustn’t believe all they say.

Tubi seems to be broken. Maybe I’ll try another time.

    • R.J.

Oh my. It’s working here. Dod the commies break it?

    • Common Tater

      It’s working for me.

      • rhywun

Maybe the website; I don’t use that.

        The tee-vee version.

      • rhywun

Still down. I had clicked on Search and it said “no can do”. After returning to the Home screen any further attempt to access Tubi yields an empty black screen.

      • Common Tater

Shit. Try it on a laptop?

      • rhywun

TBH, I hate watching media on a computer. Because I’m already doing other stuff on my computer.

      • R.J.

I usually tune in on the smart TV, but I do provide a link for those who wish it.

Anyway, I’ve seen House (1977). Although in modern times. Probably would have been mind-blowing back in the 80’s. I like different kinds of Japanese horror, but it just didn’t do it for me. Very creative, original, all that. Don’t speak Japanese, but the subtitles are retarded. Then again, they are schoolgirls. Definitely worth watching if you haven’t seen it.

    $8.05 for a Mother’s Day card.

It doesn’t light up. It doesn’t play music.

    It’s just a fucking card.

    😒

    • rhywun

😳 I haven’t bought a paper card in a couple decades. Maybe 3 or 4 bucks tops back then?

      • Gender Traitor

I became a huge fan of Sandra Boynton’s greeting cards when she started out with Recycled Paper Products back in the day. Still a big fan of hers (especially her book/music sets for kids,) but since you can’t pick up her cards at the drug store anymore, I’m kinda over greeting cards in general.

      • rhywun

        Those are cute, and cheep.

But yeah, last time I went to an email version and probably won’t go back to paper.

    • UnCivilServant

I was going to suggest you buy her Hallmark stock instead – but it turns out they’re privately held and not traded.

      • rhywun

I love that my company went back to private a few years ago. So much less tedious compliance BS. Still regulated up the wazoo but any bit of relief helps.

  6. Evan from Evansville

“So, essentially, this film was co-written by a 12-year-old Japanese girl, who shares screenwriting credit.” Cute/ That was rather nice of him. Or the producers. Kinda wouldn’t expect that from mid-70s Japan. (Nor now, frankly, but I’m not up-to-date on any modern Asian views on women. Women certainly worked in Korea, but family dynamics? Uh huh.)

“…the story of a group of schoolgirls visiting a crumbling mansion in the deep countryside…” *looks ’em up* Yep. Would teach at.

There is plenty of time to cheat yet.

And Labour might lose Wales for the first time in almost 30 years.

    @ Pat

“It hasn’t changed noticeably since I moved in.”

If it isn’t moving, and it was my house, I’d just Jack it up to level and put new material in the gap.

I don’t see why you’d put a bunch of new piles in.
