Pre-Mother’s Day Friday Afternoon Links

Still waiting for spring to spring here, and Ohio On Tap week begins, but let’s get to the links.

For those who want to go full Midwestern drunk.

The publishers are just taunting aren’t they?

Oh, I remember when this would be considered malicious.

I preferred Might and Magic or Ultima to Wizardry.

Yes. Yes it is. No, I haven’t seen it yet.

Collectors gonna collect.

A long read that may be of interest to you lot.

You don’t say

I wonder why this and this landed in my inbox at nearly the same time.

This may be a sign of societal collapse, not just economic collapse.

“How much can you know about yourself if you’ve never been in a fight?”

For the drink this week, after the Hugo Spritz, let’s go with something else that may work for Mother’s Day

Garibaldi

  • 3 part Campari (or other amaro)
  • 8 part fresh OJ (the recipes say “fluffy”, I’ll discuss that below)

This is a simple drink with a very nice color (with the original Campari). To build this drink, fill a highball or collins glass with ice. Then pour in the Campari, and top with “fluffy” orange juice, then stir gently with a bar spoon to combine. OK, time to define “fluffy” – this is generally considered to be aerated, either by shaking the OJ separately, whisking it, or using an aerator. I don’t have a strong preference, and generally skip the middleman and shake the drink in the shaker before straining over fresh ice.

With that, I hope you enjoy your weekend.

Next up, full service restaurants requiring payment first.

    • Threedoor

I noticed this first in the Tricities. The real Tricities. The three in Washington.

But since Trump the roads haven’t been as packed and I haven’t had to dodge as many non drivers.

      These two things go together.

  2. UnCivilServant

So, on the way back from the funeral Sunday I visited my Mother. She thought it was mother’s day, and I had no idea, so I wished her happy mother’s day.

Now that I know the truth, do I wish her another one on the day of, or leave her with the existing misconception?

    • Gender Traitor

Wish her a happy Mother’s Day again. If pressed, claim it’s Eastern Orthodox Mother’s Day.

  3. The Late P Brooks

deleting the file causes Chrome to re-download the model without telling you.

    Sounds legit.

Required by quite a few sites and companies now.

      • Muzzled Woodchipper

I need it to do 1 thing, and only do that 1 thing with it.

      • rhywun

Mine is either Edge or Chrome at work.

I haven’t hit a site that “requires” a specific browser in a very long time – “best with Netscape” maybe? – and I would refuse to visit one that did.

      • Muzzled Woodchipper

Mine isn’t a website, but a protocol that Chrome can access and others cannot.

      • Threedoor

Plenty of government sites ‘require’ specific websites.

I use Firefox or safari on them.

Democratic women are more likely than Republican men to say they could win a fight with Donald Trump
I did not know that many Democrat men identified as women.

    • JaimeRoberto feckful & gruntled

They expect him to go for the pussy grab move only to be surprised that he can’t find it.

    • Threedoor

I would think about 90% of people would be able to knock down an old man.

      • UnCivilServant

I don’t know, the landwhales would have to fall into him, since they’d be winded trying to get close enough.

    • rhywun

Probably because Democratic women hate him? Like, really really hate him.

  5. EvilSheldon

“How much can you know about yourself if you’ve never been in a fight?”

Donald Trump is 6’3″ and ~250lbs – that’s three inches and sixty pounds on me. But he’s also 79 years old, has never done any combat sports (the WWF appearance doesn’t count), and thinks that playing golf is exercise. I figure I take him by submission in the second round.

    Collectors gonna collect.

I blame seeing The Dark Crystal at age five, to be largely responsible for how I am today.

Also, sweet drunken Enkidu did Age of Resistance suck donkey asshole…

    • DEG

I want to say I saw it when I was seven or eight. It was soon after it was available on VHS.

    • SarumanTheWoefullyIgnorant

If Trump fell on you he might give you a concussion. Victory by injury default.

      “Dark Crystal”

Saw it in my early twenties. Relatively harmless fun. I enjoyed the Skeksis spearing the rats at the banquet table.

      “Age of Resistance”

Had no idea it was even a game. Had to look that up. But then I’m not that kind of gamer.

    • Threedoor

I’m pretty sure we went to the theatre for it.

We did hit the big ‘children’s and family’ movies of the 80s.

      • UnCivilServant

Could she even kick that high?

    • slumbrew

I saw it when it came out, when I was 12, and it was still pretty intense.

  7. The Late P Brooks

I figure I take him by submission in the second round.

Run him in circles until he collapses.

    • EvilSheldon

I’d do exactly that for the first round, then go in for the takedown/position/sub at the start of round 2.

The earliest Wizardry games varied a lot depending on the platform: DOS and Commodore 64 versions were as described, but the Nintendo ports were graphically much more vivid, with evocative fantasy pixel art.

Weren’t the Nintendo Wizardry games spin-offs authorized by Sir-Tech? I thought none of them were ports.

The original Wizardry 1-5 and the later Wizardry 6-8 are distinct universes with different underlying rights ownership

6-8 were a distinct world created by David W. Bradley. I didn’t know the rights went to a different place after Sir-Tech’s bankruptcy sale.

I remember the Mortal Kombat movie from not far back. Saw it in theaters, even. The first fifteen minutes? Fucking OUTRAGEOUSLY good. IIRC the origin scene of Scorpion, as it were. In the jungle, a tight, suspenseful and hella well-done scene. DAMN. ME LIKEY.

The rest of the film… was. Uh. Absolute garbage. A couple decently fun, fan-service Fatalities, but just schlock. I was really disappointed. I wasn’t expecting anything, and I don’t recall why I went to the theater in the first place, but teasing me w a lick of ice cream before (surprise!) switching out with durian wasn’t what I had in mind. *sad face*

(Yes, durian ice cream is fairly common. I never purchased it and can’t speak of its smell, though there’s good reason for banning the jumbo fruit on subways, etc, one outside its smell (tho that’s what the ban is for). Those big bastards are fucking lethal weapon-esque. Anyone want durian-sized testicles? With the points and spines?! A surgeon out there, somewhere, awaits your financial donation.)

    • Threedoor

The mortal combat movie soundtrack is killer.

  10. The Late P Brooks

I watched The Dark Tower recently. It didn’t completely suck. It really wasn’t bad at all.

    • rhywun

It sucked. Just kind of sloppy and disjointed. Not easy to take bits and pieces from multiple books and make a coherent movie out of it.

  11. The Late P Brooks

    Disappointing

The report shows the labor market has been “pretty much stable for a year, year and a half,” Austan Goolsbee, president of the Federal Reserve of Chicago, said in a CNBC interview. “I characterize that we’ve been stable without being good. … The unemployment rate has been stable, the hiring rate’s been stable, the layoff rate’s been stable, the vacancy rate has been stable. So, I still think there’s not a lot of evidence that the job market is falling apart.”

But everybody is rooting for the Trump Recession.

  12. EvilSheldon

I really feel like spinning up another tabletop RPG campaign…

    • mock-star

I received a bunch of Dungeon Crawl Classics books in the mail last week. I’m digging it so far.

      • EvilSheldon

Despite playing a lot of tabletop RPGs, I don’t really care for LitRPG as a genre. That’s me, though.

      • UnCivilServant

The whole Idea of “LitRPG” creates a visceral revulsion in me.

If I were to abandon my principles, I’d delete them from the market and their creators.

      • mock-star

I’ve yet to even try reading Dungeon Crawler Carl, it has no appeal to me. But I think you might be confusing the fantasy genre with the TTRPG called Dungeon Crawl Classics. Its basically a modern take on “basic” DnD with some 3.x mechanics sprinkled in (ascending AC, Fort/Ref/Will saves) and some unique mechanics, particularly with spellcasting.

      • slumbrew

I’m in the middle of the Dungeon Crawler Carl books and they are fucking great.

        That is all.

TOO LOCAL NEWS: Gordon Darby trying again

The company that once ran New Hampshire’s vehicle inspection program plans to file a new lawsuit against state officials if the state doesn’t resume testing by July.

Gordon-Darby withdrew its original lawsuit Thursday after the U.S. Court of Appeals ruled last week that the program could remain on hold while the lawsuit played out in court.

The court said an injunction to keep inspections going should never have been issued and that Gordon-Darby filed its lawsuit too early.

Gordon-Darby said it would refile its lawsuit to fix the timing issue, which it referred to as a technicality.

It kinda works. My take on “Basic” D&D is BECMI.

  14. Furthest Blue pistoffnick (370HSSV)

I make ranch dressing with buttermilk, mayo, and a HVR packet nearly every week. It is sooo much better than the shelf-stable bottled stuff. I still haven’t been able to make my own dry seasoning packet for it.

I love ranch dressing, but I’m not sure I want it in my tequila.

    • Nephilium

See, my thought is that I would think the spice blend would be enough to impart the ‘ranch’ flavor. But I don’t like ranch, so I don’t care to experiment myself.

Of course the other day I saw Fiery Hot Cool Ranch Doritos on the shelf… which seems a contradiction.

      • EvilSheldon

The ‘Firey Hot’ and ‘Cool Ranch’ cancel each other out. It’s just a tortilla chip.

      • Furthest Blue pistoffnick (370HSSV)

        …I don’t like ranch…

        **blinks**
Maybe you should go back to Russia! Next you are gonna tell me you don’t like tractor pulls! ;^)

      • Nephilium

        pistoffnick:

Never been a fan, don’t like blue cheese dressing either. But I can get a pierogi bucket.

      • EvilSheldon

        Tractor pulls are awesome though.

      • Mojeaux

Pony pulls are objectively superior to tractor pulls.

Sounds like they’re making BBQ Horsemeat.

        Oh very well.

STEVE SMITH SHOW YOU WHAT FIERY COOL RANCH TASTE LIKE

    • Threedoor

      I don’t like mayo.
      I dont understand ranch.
      Especially as a dip
For stuff like chicken, seriously wtf? Crap is for vegetables at best.

I may have liked mayo back in the day when it was made with whale oil.

      • EvilSheldon

How do you make chicken or tuna salad without mayo? You’re not using Miracle Whip, are you?

(These days I make my own mayo with avocado oil.)

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        …beef hooked?

      • Furthest Blue pistoffnick (370HSSV)

make my own mayo with avocado oil

Look at Mr. Money Bags ovah here!

I could go for some Curried Chicken salad now.

      • rhywun

Ranch is for Doritos. Any other usage makes me kind of nauseous.

      • Tres Cool

YOU SHUT YOUR FILTHY WHORE MOUTH!

Ranch is or should be a condiment.

  15. CPRM

In 2023, McDonald’s confirmed to TODAY.com it would be phasing out self-serve beverage stations by the year 2032. At the time, the chain said the goal of removing the machines was to create a consistent experience for workers and customers in restaurants, at the drive-thru and in the app.

“It’s an evolution towards convenience and (the result of) the growth of digital service,”

    Huh?

    • Ownbestenemy

Self-serve was a disservice to youts having to learn how to navigate and negotiate the worker to give them one more cup of soda back in the day.

    • UnCivilServant

“Users were making a mess and a sanitary nightmare, along with simply stealing from the machines.”

    • SarumanTheWoefullyIgnorant

I suspect they figured it out when surveillance cameras revealed how many refills people were getting.

      • Ownbestenemy

So pathway was 2032? 9 years later to tackle that bleeding of revenue?

      • rhywun

Which is nuts cause the soda is the cheapest element of the meal by far.

This seems like another case of nickling and diming the customer to death that every other company is doing now.

It sure as hell has nothing to do with any flapdoodle they might spin about “experience”.

  16. rhywun

when this would be considered malicious.

    Or… don’t use Chrome. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • Mojeaux

I’m in the process of de-googling as much as I can when the best shared calendar on the market is Google’s, but I’m getting the low-hanging fruit, starting with the browser. Yes, I use Chrome. For whatever reason, I’ve tried the others and they all have something wrong with them in terms of my needs, but I’m going to suck it up.

Right now I’m heavily considering Kagi, even though you have to pay for it.

      • rhywun

They all suck to some degree. I use what is most convenient for me which is currently Safari.

      • Mojeaux

Now, that’s not to say I haven’t hardened Chrome as much as I can between various tweaks in services and registry entries regarding their updates, but I forget what I did and they somehow sneak in the back door, which, I don’t care how much lube you use, hurts.

I also never relied on gmail for anything other than Google Play and putting my books on Google Books. Honestly, I don’t have THAT much to de-google, but I’m going to shed as much as possible.

  17. rhywun

No, I haven’t seen it yet.

I was gonna say I enjoyed the previous one and then I read this one is a sequel to a reboot I did not know about and the “previous one” is 30 years old. 🙄

    • Threedoor

I take the boy to stuff with violence, try to not expose him to swearing and sex.

    • Nephilium

Mortal Kombat Annihilation? The original sequel? It was gods awful. I remember my friend group going opening night because the original was the best video game movie for a very long time.

      • rhywun

No, I mean the original from 1995 – if pressed I would have guessed it was 10 or 15 years old – not 30. I was unaware of any others after that.

      • Nephilium

        rhywun:

Right, 1995 was the original movie, Annihilation came out a year or two after. The reboot just came out in the past couple of years.

  18. The Other Kevin

I imagine Trump fighting like Kingpin. He looks big and slow but he’d smash your skull with one punch, then pick you up and throw you into a brick wall. Maybe I’m watching too much of that Daredevil series.

  19. Grumbletarian

“this research calls attention to the possibility that the political actions of scientists can shape public opinion about them.”

It’s only a possibility though. We’ll need a few million dollars more to begin to determine if our theory is true or not.

  20. rhywun

    illegally considered race in admissions

I wouldn’t care much except (1) they lie about it and (2) they take tax dollars.

I don’t think anyone is fooled by the claim that selective colleges select only on “merit”.

  21. The Late P Brooks

“this research calls attention to the possibility that the political actions of scientists can shape public opinion about them.”

    Wait, what?!

  22. Shpip

Why McDonald’s Is Removing Self-Serve Soda Machines from Restaurants

I see the Today reporterette did her due diligence of scanning social media, where McDonalds claimed their new policy was due to “changing consumer preferences.”

This was widely mocked, since everyone with two eyeballs and more than two neurons to rub together deciphered this as “Negro teens axing for a water cup, then drinking seven sodas.”

So the corporate mothership decided to make it harder for youths to steal.

    • rhywun

If there is one thing that I have learned over especially the last ten years or so of the US kind-of swirling down the drain it’s that no corporation is doing a thing for your interest anymore.

  23. Pash KKatel

I’ve nailed down my Painkiller recipe. I may make enough to fill my volcano bowl

    • Threedoor

32oz Margarita with a ground up hydro and a Percocet?

  24. rhywun

I will try this week’s drink. I need OJ, though.

But I have both some Campari and a lot of an amaro that I found from Buffalo of all places and haven’t found a real use for yet.

    • Nephilium

Do you like Negronis? You can make some very nice variants with different amaro, and you could always make spritzes.

      • rhywun

Love negronis. I hadn’t considered substituting this amaro into other stuff I use the Campari for. I don’t remember why I even bought it TBH.

      • Nephilium

        rhywun:

Yeah, anything you would use Campari, Aperol, or vermouth in you can swap in an amaro instead. Be aware that it’ll change the flavor profile, so keep that in mind.
