In case it hasn’t been blaringly obvious – The start of Season 3 has been curated rather than random. I stacked the Robins Hood in an order to bounce between new and old renditions leading up to this installment – the Errol Flynn iteration which originally prompted the acquisition of so many adaptations.
We start with some upbeat music over the credits. This being the era when these are frontloaded, still doesn’t take as long as some opening credits today. The text card places the events in 1191 explicitly, telling of how Richard was captured by Ze Germans. This is used as the transition to the herald announcing the news to a technicolor crowd. It is a stark contrast to the 2010 movie where everything was a universally colorless palette of dinge. Immediately the technicolor crowd is more visually appealing as an audience member. I hadn’t realized my eyes were tired of the dinge until the colors popped and I went “Oh, I feel much better now”. Sure the modern movie looked like real places, and the old movie has obvious matte paintings for backdrops, but it doesn’t fear color.
Prince John and Guy of Gisborne conspire to oust the wrongful regent and begin squeezing the populace. Now, Ze Germans were demanding more than three years of royal revenue as ransom. “King’s Ransom” as a term didn’t come from nowhere. The film acknowledges this but springboard into “This John is trying to collect more than is required to cover the cost of getting Richard back from Ze Germans”. As we go into the villainy montage, the conflict is framed as a Norman-Saxon divide.
Much the Miller’s Son is stupid enough to poach a deer in full view of Guy and his retinue. Robin intervenes and prevents Guy from bludgeoning Much to death. He then threatens Guy into withdrawing. Now, when this was first recommended, the Glib who brought it up said Rathbone played the Sheriff. So far he’s been Sir Guy. Some actor whose name I don’t recognize plays the Sheriff. While John, Guy, Marian, and the Sheriff are having a feast with a bevy of Normans, Robin delivers a deer carcass directly to the table. Honestly, I didn’t realize the scene from Men in Tights was parodying this one in particular.
For whatever reason, John invites Robin to the feast and lets him ramble on the grievances. In the meantime, the guards begin barring the doors. Robin openly declares his rebellion against John’s regency, and the fight starts. You can tell which scenes were shot on location and which were filmed on set. The lighting is inconsistent on location. While we have the meeting with Little John on the bridge, I contemplate why the earlier adaptations put emphasis on Anglo-Norman relations. I know the newer filmmakers want to fixate on class-conflict because of who’s in Hollywood these days.
Text cards lead us into a montage of oppression and murderous intervention by the outlaws and the consternation of Guy’s Norman subordinates. In his recruitment scene, Friar Tuck is shown to be a swordsman of match to Robin. I note that this adaptation focuses on the fighting prowess of the outlaws rather than the cunning. In the folklore and the 1955 adaptation, Robin had to rely more on wits and deception because he couldn’t out-fight a banquet hall full of knights and men at arms. In this one, Robin walks in and out of Nottingham Castle because he can and does. At least well enough to escape unscathed while killing a number of them.
The outlaws ambush Guy and the Sheriff as they attempt to transport tax revenues through Sherwood. Set to jaunty music, the ambush looks bloodless, even capturing Guy and Marian. While hosting his unwilling guests in the forest, I’m expected to believe this boorish rogue sways the distain of Marian to attraction. In the meantime, Guy and the Sheriff are ritually humiliated. The prisoners are eventually released in various disparate locations.
The Sheriff suggests the archery contest trap to King Prince John (I used the wrong title in the draft, and opted to leave the error). Same trap as in all the other iterations that use it, playing on Robin’s ego to draw him out. Robin’s disguise is flimsy to the border of comical. Marian is a tad slow on the uptake when the trap is being discussed around her. The trap is poorly sprung, resulting in a scuffle, but the guards take Robin into custody anyway. He is obviously found guilty by Guy and sentenced to hanging. Despite Guy being one of the victims in the crime spree, it would still have been his responsibility to preside over the court within his holdings. Within the context of this film, Guy is acting in a role as though he were Earl Nottingham. Robin, despite being Sir Robin at the start of things, is not a Peer of the realm, but a mere knight, and thus subject to the local courts rather than trial by the House of Lords. Though that right was not really codified until John was forced to sign the Magna Carta a few decades later.
I don’t buy the extent of Marian’s concern for Robin’s fate, their interactions so far don’t strike me as having engendered this degree of attachment. But she goes the vipers’ den to provide aid to Will Scarlet and the outlaws. Her plan is delivered off-screen as we cut to the gallows being readied.
I also find it interesting how the relative importance of Guy and the Sheriff shift from adaptation to adaptation. Sometimes one or the other is absent entirely. Someone’s one answers to the other – I’ve seen both as leader and subordinate. Sometimes they’re separate minions of the crown. Anyway, the outlaws shoot the hangman and confound the guards along Robin’s escape route. After the swift escape, we cut to Robin sneaking back into Nottingham Castle to bother Marian. Immediately after – no transition. Strikes me as an odd editing choice. But they needed to advance the romance plot. I want to joke about risking a Hays Code violation, but that would make the scene sound spicier than it is.
With all the protestations of loyalty to Richard and England, things must have gotten a bit awkward after the French shot Richard and John came to the throne. Speaking of the doomed devil, in a twist I was not expecting, Richard arrives incognito back in England despite no ransom having yet been paid. The Bishop rats out Richard’s return to John, and he dispatches an assassin. Marian eavesdrops on the plot, but is noticed. Guy puts together her past betrayals and arrests her. They forget to do anything about her maid who carries the news to the outlaws. Or at least to Much, who personally ambushes the assassin and puts up an admirable fight for what had been comic relief to this point.
In the meantime, Robin ambushes Richard who is disguised as a churchman. Also, Scarlet finds Much wounded in the woods and delivers him to the camp. The outlaws replace the contingent of monks and priests on their way to coronate John, save for the Bishop, who is known to John and thus impossible to replace. Thus disguised, they walk back into the castle. They break out into battle and the wide shot is a bit of an error as it shows more waggling of blades than swordplay. Robin and Guy duel, somehow finding an empty room for their fight. Their fighting style is more appropriate to foil than of broadsword, but in the end Guy gets stabbed. Richard’s faction wins the battle, since we’re running out of runtime, and he banishes John. Which is a funny development, since John spent most of Richard’s tenure in England. Richard then names Robin as Earl Nottingham.
The End.
The pacing is certainly significantly better than other installments, I was able to watch the whole thing without running of in search of distraction. I already mentioned the improved color palette. The overall tone is lighter, and not as bleak as seems the norm in modern interpretations. That is something that was missing from a lot of the others – fun. Something that is woefully absent in a lot of more recent works. I still won’t heap this one with piles of praise. I don’t buy Flynn and De Havilland as a couple. At least not in this movie.
Next time – back to the randomizer. Lets see what nightmare it pulls up for me to see.

I recently listened to Ivanhoe. Robin and his band figure prominently in that story, although no Sheriff or Marian. Richard does return incognito, and while I don’t recall it being mentioned, John, at least, must not have paid Richard’s ransom since his return was a big surprise. Side note, the (((financial services crowd))) comes in for a lot of abuse from the “good Christians.”

I regard this version as the best one. Why? It’s fun and lively and like UCS said, well-paced. True the romance doesn’t quite land but Flynn is a such a treasure here it doesn’t matter that much.

This movie will always be special to me. Every Sunday on TV in the 80โs they showed classics like this. My Dad and I would watch together.

Regular shopper at farm stand and farmers market. Can no longer get decent tomatoes at supermarket and prices are just as high. Same for a lot of produce.
We rarely buy tomatoes or cukes at the store. They look good but are tasteless and hard. My tomatoes are just starting to get ripe but they are big and juicy. I took some of Mrs F’s flower beds near the front door. Seeing (and eating) the results she’s a happy lady. They only will last for a month before the first frost so we have to eat as many as possible.

He says the WNBA is reacting so strongly to the Trans issue because of who they are and how they live. When they speak of Trans, they are not thinking Lia Thomas or men in women’s sport…. they are thinking of women in the WNBA who live as men.
And that makes a lot more sense.

Such as? I certainly donโt follow the WNBA, but I havenโt heard of any of their players coming out loud and proud as trans men. And it sure seems like if they were trans men, they would make a big noise about it because the league has pretty well pegged their woke dial at 11.
I do wonder how many of that there are. It is not something I’ve heard of anywhere else.

All well, thanks! The weather here has been lovely the last couple of days. It’s actually getting cool enough – 58 degrees at the moment – that I wonder if I’ll need a jacket when I leave for work this morning.

I made it to work.
I went to bed early in hope of getting more sleep, but I instead woke up an hour before my alarm. I did not get more sleep. ๐
That’s frustrating. You try to do something nice for your body and brain, and that’s the thanks you get! ๐

So now I sit and look at the calendar and see that my supervisor is out today. So I’m in charge of making sure things don’t go too far haywire.
