Saturday evening Links

Spring has fully sprung here in Spudville. I have three eight cup bird feeders just off the patio, under a tree canopy. At times it’s like a free food giveaway in the Bronx. The American Gold Finch above is one of the predominant species. Watching a dozen bright yellow balls of feathers gallivanting around the feeders is a great way to sip an afternoon cocktail, which I will be doing soon.

But first, the Links!

Without government grants, how are we ever going to discover how shrimp respond to meth?

I don’t see this going well for the city.

And the incidence of lung cancer has plummeted, right? Right? Actually, it looks like 2020 is when there was a noticeable drop. Prior to that, not so much.

Speaking of clean living. Filet ‘o Fish doesn’t count.

Not the big tittied sociopath?

I’m going to miss the hats.

“Fuck it, you deal with it.”

One of my big knocks against Reagan was closing federal mental health institutions and expecting the states to pick it up, which they didn’t.

That’s it for me, folks. Time for a little work in the garden, and then some quality time with a Ranch Water and gold finches. Peace out, Glibbies.

I had bluebirds in Montana. Now I have magpies and starlings.

there’s a bluebird in my heart that

I would do the bird thing, except there was a hawk that would perch on the utility pole that carried the service drop to my house a couple years back, I imagine she might come again to hunt.

    • Evan from Evansville

“I imagine she might come again to hunt.”

…? This frightens you, somehow? And more to the point, having a spot where you know a hawk actively hunts? Why would active, primo primo real estate turn you *off* “doing the bird thing?”

(Or is your “bird thing” a very different thing, altogether. *taps nose* Cool.)

    Property is theft, man

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani promised in his inaugural address to introduce New Yorkers to “the warmth of collectivism.” It now appears landlords will likely to be the first to feel the heat.

This week, Mamdani revealed an effort to transfer properties to tenants and non-profit groups. Mamdani announced that “through our new citywide campaign, Fix the City, we will focus on the worst landlords in New York City.” For landlords, it has been clear that the fix was in for some time.

Mamdani faced criticism for his appointment of Cea Weaver as the new director of the Office to Protect Tenants. She previously called for efforts to “impoverish the white middle-class” and called homeownership “racist” while demanding the seizure of private property.

Videos of Weaver echoed thread-worn socialist mantras that are the signature of the Mamdani Administration. “I think the reality is, that for centuries we’ve really treated property as an individualized good and not a collective good,” she said. “And transitioning to treating it as a collective good and towards a model of shared equity will require that we think about it differently and it will mean that families — especially white families, but some POC families who are homeowners as well — are going to have a different relationship to property than the one that we currently have.”

Funny thing, but I thought the City of New York was the worst slumlord in the Five Boroughs.

    • rhywun

He and the loathsome turds he surrounds himself with are like comic book villains. You cannot believe these people actually exist.

How do they find each other? Does he wake up one morning and say to himself, “I’m going to put the absolute most racist, communist piece of shit I can find (besides myself) in charge of every department, because I am just that determined to steal everything in sight and leave the place in ruins”?

    • Chafed

It is. If he is being literal, then he is proposing a taking. No way is that in the NYC budget.

He is straight out of an Ayn Rand novel.

      • dbleagle

I preferred when you say of a Rand villain, “There is no way.” now we are trying to link these assholes directly to specific villians.

        This stage sucks.

  4. The Late P Brooks

Weaver famously tweeted out her beliefs about private property, which are apparently widely shared in the Mamdani administration: “Private property, including and kind of ESPECIALLY homeownership is a weapon of White supremacy masquerading as ‘wealth building’ public policy.”

    ——-

Mamdani insists that he will be targeting “the worst landlords in New York City.” Yet, who constitutes the “worst landlords” could prove a relative notion to the ardent socialist. Mamdani proposes to transfer their properties to “responsible stewards,” including tenants and nonprofits.

In his 112-page report, Mamdani is again pushing to unleash his “Block by Block agenda for expanded rent controls, promising not to exempt landlords from Rent Guidelines Board limits. He and his allies have previously heralded Cuba and South Africa as models for policy changes.

I’m sure the redistribution will be totally fair and aboveboard.

    • Threedoor

In a rational world he and his boards end up like Mussolini.

      • rhywun

In the real world he and his buddies get (more) fabulously wealthy while much of the housing stock is abandoned and/or set on fire (see: 1970s). Crime goes through the roof and another “white flight” ensues.

      • dbleagle

Very few gas stations in Manhattan. He and his henchperson will probably need to be hung up in an outer borough.

The story began when Grand emailed “around twelve” friends to invite them to walk to his home to pray as a minyan that upcoming Sabbath. The moment the City got wind of the email—and before any minyan convened—the City “demand[ed] that [Grand] immediately cease and desist any and all” uses of his home as a “place of religious assembly,”

Once cities tasted that sweet Covid tyranny, it was hard to let go or bleed it into other things.

The burdens compounded. Neighbors opposed the permit with letters protesting, “I am not Jewish and I do not want our neighborhood labeled as Jewish.”

Neighbors are assholes, but if they actually wrote that it will be interesting to see what city officials prompted to get that sort of response….

He[the mayor] then urged Grand’s neighbors to surveil Grand’s home and “report” any “activities consistent with those in a house of assembly.”

    JFC.

The City insists that Grand suffered no legally cognizable harm from any of this. And it maintains that he has no recourse—and this case is unworthy of review—because he withdrew from a permitting process that the City ordered him to pursue to pray.

Good luck University Heights and the people there deserve to pay out whatever to this person.

    • Nephilium

Neighbors are assholes, but if they actually wrote that it will be interesting to see what city officials prompted to get that sort of response….

When I told the girlfriend about the story, her first response was, “That’s where all the Jews live.”

      • Ownbestenemy

I gotta stop reading that brief…Even if one item is true and rest is just layered on, the City made every available resource available to mess with this guy. For a prayer group. In a home.

      • Tres Cool

I thought they were all in Seven Hills.

    • Ownbestenemy

Man…this guy in a just world is gonna get a fat paycheck if this is all true

On March 23, 2021, the same day that Brennan had publicly called on residents to report any attempts at hosting prayer groups in residential homes, an email was sent out by Lt. Mark McArtor to “Uniform Div.” of the City Police Department which instructed:

As part of your patrols, please make frequent drive-bys at 2343 Miramar Blvd. for violations to 452.03 Prohibited Standing or parking Places of parking on landscaped surfaces. If violations are observed, citations will be “the preferred course of action.” Also be aware, there is a great deal of contention between this address and the surrounding neighbors since the 2343 resident applied to the Planning Commission for approval to operate a Schul [sic]. If you observe or respond to the location for parking or noise complaints, be sure to log the activity in CAD.

Seriously appears to be some insane targeting and NIMBY attitudes.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

The harm was he was not allowed to host a religious ceremony in his home, a pretty basic part of the first amendment.

And we need to nip any of this “emergency powers” BS in the bud right quick.

    • rhywun

“I am not Jewish, and I do not want our neighborhood labeled as Jewish.”

Yeah, that got a chuckle out of me.

I guess the only question I have – as not a lawyer – is, does any other faith have the same burden to practice it in that city?

    • Sensei

I’ll play devil’s advocate here. How many cars and what is parking like. Depending on how observant they could be walking.

You know what you are in store for when you buy a house next to a church or a school.

OTH, when you are essentially looking at a large gathering every week and unhappy neighbors. Depending on holidays probably more than once a week.

I’m next to a school BTW. And in my town there are roughly 40% Jews and more than a few of them in a more affluent section are fighting exactly this. Similar situation. Their claim with some justification is that it has become a full blown place of worship. It’s been a hoot to read about from the poor section of town.

      • Ownbestenemy

Joe’s BBQ Bash better have same requirements. Tupperware/Eros parties the same.

      • Sensei

That’s the deal with zoning here in the northeast. My neighbor can’t sell his house to a guy who decides to turn it into a strip club. That was the expectation when I bought it.

We can play libertarian and discuss zoning, but that’s not the reality of where we are now in my neighborhood of 50×100 lots. And if somebody is throwing 60 Tupperware parties a year that is a commercial enterprise.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”

That should over ride any zoning laws.

      • Nephilium

What if he happened to be hosting Browns/Cavs/Indians watch parties, or a book club? Should he need to get permits for that?

Parking in that general area is shite, but he was expecting people to walk as it would be prayers on the Sabbath for Orthodox Jews. I’ll also guess that there’s been no push back at home Bible studies.

      • Sensei

        See my first point.

That’s not the world we have. I libertopia I agree.

JI wrote: Which of the six genders does the common man belong to?

Interestingly, I remember nothing about trannies in the interview. I might be blanking on it, but honestly I remember nothing about trannies from the interview.

Rhywun: And what exactly is the “living wage” I am required to pay him?

Talarico didn’t say, and Rogan didn’t push to get a number. I’m trying to recall if any of the usual suspects in NH (all Democrats and Progressives of course) who have bitched about legislator salary gave out a number, but I can’t recall if any have.

Mexican Sharpshooter: If he cared at all about the kid, he’d give him what he thinks the kid needs, without the state. Just ask Alice Cooper who has a “church” in my neighborhood for disgruntled youth that he backs with his own name and funds very much from his own pocket.

Agreed. I brought up the example because the average voter, who thinks government run schooling is the only way all kids can have an education (yes, everyone here knows people like that), is going to have an emotional reaction against the meanie Republicans who cut the state funding. And on that note, none of these people will ask why the school district cut the therapist instead of say, cutting administrators.

Ownbestenemy: 10 mos old interview and that top/bottom thing just caught on? See? Even the stupid Right isn’t immune to dragging uo some BS.

Yeah. After listening to his explanation, I get what he’s trying to say. It’s not a good way to say it.

Forklift on my tilt deck trailer the other day. It has a 1.5l Mazda engine, a one speed automatic and weighs close to 9000 lb. Took me
Three tries. Thankfully it wasent a replay of that.

When I went to take it off the trailer I forgot to put the parking brake on before I unchained it and released the deck.

It self unloaded about 35’ away from the trailer.

I’m glad there was nothing in its way.

Years ago a couple of guys where I worked were loading up a 60′ boom lift on a rollback truck. They pulled the cable in a little too snug. It snapped, and because the boom lift had to be in freewheel mode to be loaded there was nothing to stop it unloading itself. The lift roared down the rollback bed and through the warehouse and nearly punched its way through the rear of the building. Fortunately there was nobody and no equipment in its way.

    • Chafed

Tonight I learned why forklifts have roll cages.

  8. ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

About Reagan closing mental health facilities. Reagan (and other governors) was sued by the ACLU under laws regarding self-determination that had been signed by JFK. That law, 1963’s Community Health Act, was part of a trend of deinstitutionalization hat started in the 1950s and continued into the 70s. Reagan’s specific role involved signing California’s Lanterman-Petris-Short Act in 1967 as governor, which restricted involuntary commitment, and later repealing the federal Mental Health Systems Act of 1980 as president in 1981.

But, like other social activism laws, these were part of a long trend in public opinion, in this case regarding what should be done with the mentally ill. Was it wrong? Sure, but so is gun control, which was at one time considered a normal opinion and the ever strengthening laws showed it.

    • rhywun

Yeah, article is paywalled but I suspected the trend started long before.

And I absolutely agree with the headline. The reason city streets are packed with mentally ill people now when they were not in the bad old days is pretty obvious.

      • Gustave Lytton

Increased drug use/availability/acceptance of antisocial behavior/breakdown of family and cultural structure, also.

    • Gustave Lytton

Thank you. The 1980 act, that Reagan signed the repeal and not a unilateral executive order, was all about more outpatient and deinstitutionalization of more patients, using federal funding to control what had previously been state funded and operated until shortly before that.

Also, I need to start remembering I am no longer in Nevada. Smoker downstairs had the perfect environment through the winter and spring to spawn a budding civilization that is on the verge of a space program. That will need a deep clean, hot fire and redo of the seasoning.

    I blame Ken Kesey.

    • Evan from Evansville

Blaming Kesey’s an interesting thought. Fits the timeline, at least.

Problem with institutions: They’d be run by the state, and likely, the Feds. It would be just as shitty as justice and jails are. Then everyone would complain at the injustices and abuse suffered by the ‘patients.’ Then they’d change a word or two and “DEFUND!” would again be the chant, all with the ‘goal’ of releasing the *formally* insane back onto the streets. Home + pennyless.

But, oh dear! Natch, getting them to vote would be Priority #1. It’d be the same shit we have now. Culture needs changin’.

    • Gustave Lytton

I smelled some good strong cigarette smoke the other day. Took me right back to being in the service. Love the smell of it outdoors in the woods. Not so much indoors. Better than the now prevalent skunk weed.

And pipe smoke… I could use a scent diffuser of pipe tobacco.

      • rhywun

After 8 years without a cigarette I don’t like the smell now.

But I sure miss the “hit”. I got that with vapes for awhile but because of the nonsensical hatred of that chemical it’s just too expensive a habit.

      • Tres Cool

Right? Its been over a decade for me, and at least a couple times a week in the morning I miss that coffee-cigarette combo.

      • Evan from Evansville

I’ve felt that ‘hit’ before, but Lord, is it rare. I’ve smoked about a pack a week for five years; abroad maybe a pack every 3 days, tho maybe a pack a night when out. First smoke after a few days off, or something? Sure. But not every time. Started in late high school.

I’ve also never ‘craved’ a smoke. (I kinda don’t buy it. Same w booze. I’ve had DTs, but never a ‘craving.’ Psych word games. ) I *have* ‘craved’ a few minutes to myself or an excuse to join a conversation with strangers, though.

UCS should pick up smoking to ward off unwanted humans. Smoking gloves options, galore. This won’t happen, sadly.

He didn’t say he was confused.

True. I suppose I instantly equate “old” w my parents’ age, 76/73. They’re both in great health, age considered.

      • rhywun

I am not confused by “wiki”.

I just roll my eyes at what the kids are into these days.

      • Threedoor

I just learned what ‘creepy pasta’ was. I heard the term but didn’t understand.

Now Trumps going after Rand Paul. Can’t wait for the orange dick sucking brigade to say what a great idea that is and how Paul deserves it.

    • rhywun

Over Iran? Or one of the many other ways Donald is breaking promises?

      • rhywun

There’s “irreverence” and then there’s just “being an asshole”.

I think the Jews need to stop ‘taking it’ and start imitating their bitterest enemies, the Muslims. Threaten ultra-violence and worse any time anyone criticizes them or their religion or any of their cultural practices. You don’t see cities trying to restrict Muslim behavior.

    • Evan from Evansville

Jewish ‘culture’ wouldn’t allow it. Nor for ‘mine.’ As in, the cultural shittery that allows for African ‘refugees” to pull the violence and thievery in Europe+, the Jews and many/ most didn’t grow up where that was ‘acceptable.’ Encouraged. Simplest base, Jews weren’t raised in that poverty and culture.

NYC promoting the mosques 5x/day call to prayer calls was a big straw, IMO.

Ha! I used to be good at that game. One class of fluent kids tested me a few times. Korean on the right is my guess. Japan left and China center.

*looks to see if the answer’s there (I’m sure it’s just AI)* Well. Can’t find one, but comments’ consensus seems to be Korean’s on the right.

      • Gustave Lytton

Believe the Japanese and Chinese are flipped.

Bonus round should be an audio clip.
