There are times when you just have to ask yourself, maybe I should get on the juice?

This is my review of Outlaw Light:

Its true, you though about it. You sat there looking at your deadlift numbers and watching some freak like Hafthor Björnsson and assumed if he can get his deadlift over 500kg and you’re struggling to get even half of that…Clearly the problem is you’re not on steroids.

No, the problem is you’re not 6’9”, you don’t weight 400 pounds. That is why he not only has an insane deadlift but also that very adorable little wife.

I know what you’re thinking: “…But he’s still on steroids, though.” Pffft. Yeah he is.

Hang on, you sure this E. German chick was on gear?

This weekend marked the inaugural Enhanced Games in Las Vegas (where else). An athletic competition put on by tech bros offering athletes a payday and a chance to break every record on the books—whether they piss hot or not. The results of course were somewhat underwhelming and it didn’t draw a lot of attention. Only swimming, track, and powerlifting athletes participated, in spite of the objections from international bodies governing such sports. In the end only one record was broken. It wasn’t even an athlete on the gear either, it was a swimmer using one of those speed suits the olympics banned.

As for Haftor, he didn’t break his own deadlift record of 500kg, in fact he failed to lift 475. I don’t begrudge him, we all have a bad day from time to time. How is it possible that nobody beat the records?

It makes perfect sense if you consider steroids in baseball. They say everyone in the 90’s was on it, and it was to the point where you couldn’t get to the majors without it. Which means if you are in the 90th percentile of your sport, the juice will get you to 93-95 and get your foot in the door you arguably couldn’t get through. Where it really got interesting was when the 98th and 99th percentile players like Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, and Roger Clemens started taking it.

Nobody cares when a no name at the tail end of his career who couldn’t beat Usain Bolt anyways wants to mess around with the juice, they want to see what happens when Usain Bolt does it.

This beverage does not contain any performance enhancing drugs, unless you think yammering incessantly about your deadlift is worth enhancing. Its very light, and really makes no sense to me why one would buy it. Its watery yellow beer. There’s tons of the stuff on the shelf for it to compete with in a heavily saturated and shrinking market. Its fine. Its not one I am going to accuse of being piss, but I’m not going to applaud them for creativity either. I do want to know what they deadlift. Outlaw Light: 2/5 4.7% abv

I would think height would be a disadvantage in deadlifting.

    • DEG

      Short torso, long arms.

    • Threedoor

It’s certainly a disadvantage to doing pushups.

    • The Other Kevin

You would think. But we have a really tall lanky guy in our strength classes, and he’s about 100 shy of the 1000 pound club. It makes no sense.

    • mexican sharpshooter

There’s some consideration for how a taller fellow approaches the lift, but its neither an advantage or disadvantage.

  2. juris imprudent

I lifted my nearly dead ass out of bed today. I consider that a personal best.

    • juris imprudent

Coda – got thrown off a horse yesterday and my 68 year old back was not happy about that.

      • Common Tater

        Blame the horse?

      • Threedoor

        Oh damn.
        You break anything?!
I’m on week three of recovering after falling out of the back of a truck, don’t fall, it sucks.

      • Fourscore

It hurts when I do that!

      • Fourscore

        5 years and I haven’t recovered yet.

Somethings take time or so I’ve heard.

got thrown off a horse yesterday

        Hey Buddy, stop doing that!

      • DEG

I hope you heal up soon

      • juris imprudent

        Blame the horse?

No, just an unfortunate accident. Barn-owner’s horse she wants to sell. Has someone looking at him on Monday so wanted him ridden (and my wife has ridden him before but I hadn’t). He backed into and tripped on the mounting stool and panicked. After I got back up, I collected him (he only went to the pasture gate), walked him around to calm him down and then got back on him and we had a good ride after that. Never want to set a bad precedent, for yourself or the horse.

Nothing broken but a little pride. I don’t come off easily, but as I was taught – when a horse wants you off its back, you’re coming off. Ibuprofen is helped, a lot.

    “shrinking market”

Less demand for lawnmower beer when everyone is sitting on their ass?

    • mexican sharpshooter

Demand for beer and alcohol in general is in decline as gen Z has less desire to drink. There’s plenty of market data out there corroborating that.

    Intervention

Abdul Carter embraced Jaxson Dart after the New York Giants quarterback read a statement about his decision to introduce President Donald Trump at a rally last week. Then the young linebacker offered a rebuke of his teammate.

Carter called the situation “bigger than football” and explained he felt the need to call out Dart publicly for the decision.

“He not only represents himself and what he does, but he represents all of us and that goes for anybody who wears a Giants uniform,” Carter said Friday after an offseason workout practice. “If he chooses to align himself with a man like President Trump, it’s my responsibility based on what I believe and what I stand on to not only show my teammates that I’m against that — but to show the world.”

Carter took to social media on Saturday to criticize his teammate after realizing a video of Dart on stage with Trump was real. Hours later, Carter said he and Dart spoke and were fine. Those posts have since been deleted.

They need someone respectable as QB, like Deshaun Watson or Michael Vick!

      • Chafed

Lol. At least Vick sort of apologized after the fact. Is Watson still stealing from Cleveland?

      • Nephilium

        Chafed:

Reports from camp is that Watson is looking amazing and is ready to be the starting QB again. First two games are road games, so I won’t get a chance to boo his ass until the third week if he’s taking the field.

Trump has targeted the diversity, equity and inclusion programs that helped many Black Americans find jobs in both the federal government and a variety of private industries. He has called DEI programs “discrimination,” and he has pushed to eradicate them from the government and put pressure on the private sector to do the same.

Earlier this year, he posted and then deleted a racist video on social media that depicted former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, as primates in a jungle.

Thanks for clearing that up, AP sportswriter.

        (C) – I would like to check out the Maine coast. I have already been to Boston, lived in NY, CT is a toilet, and the far north doesn’t hold much interest for me. Although (B) has Montreal which I would like to check out unless we are limited to the yellow areas.

      • Chafed

Was it, Pie? Was it. 😉

      • Raven Nation

I spent a week in Lubec, ME which is about as far east as you can get in the Lower 48. Whole area was nice although it took me way longer to drive there from Boston than I expected.

I was in Montreal about 35 years ago for about 36 hours and it was, as far as I could tell, meh. If you’re going to take the trouble of going there, the old town part of Quebec City is much cooler.

      • DEG

        CT is a toilet

        Seconded.

The only vacation spot in New England I haven’t been to that I would like to see is Bar Harbor. I don’t need two weeks for that.

So I’ll take D and stay home.

Meant to add I have spent plenty of time in (D) already so I will pass on that region.

      • Raven Nation

I spent some time in CT a few decades back and, if you get out of the cities, it’s really pretty. Especially some of the old seventeenth-century towns in the Connecticut River Valley.

      • rhywun

To be fair, my only experience with CT was traveling through Hartford.

      • DEG

if you get out of the cities, it’s really pretty.

It is an open question whether anyone convicted of a Capitol riot-related crime could be eligible for payments from a fund created to resolve Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS over the leak of his tax returns.

Diverting funds from a government settlement to completely unrelated uses and recipients is completely unprecedented!

I finished watching the Rogan interview with James Talarico. I watched it so you don’t have to. I’ll put my semi-proofread thoughts here and go eat dinner. I’ll respond to comments/hate mail after I get back on whatever post is live.

Talarico does a very good job presenting himself and his positions. He brings a human interest angle.

An example is when he describes why he got into politics. He told a story about a kid he taught when he was a middle school teacher. The kid’s parents had abandoned him. The kid had been a problem. Two things brought about a change. Talarico started talking to the kid privately to get to know the kid. The school assigned a new therapist to the kid. The kid now had adult figures who cared about the kid. The state cut funding. The school laid off the therapist. The kid went back to the kid’s old ways. The kid got expelled.

Another example is at the end of the interview Talarico he talks about the shenanigans around the THC products ban that hurt people using medical marijuana.

Talarico explains the top v. bottom slogan. Talarico is talking about elites versus the average person. He brings up billionaires influencing politics. He talks about social media and its influence on society.

About the first half hour to 45 minutes are on Christianity and abortion. Talarico went (is going? can’t remember) to seminary school. I think he twists some of the Bible in order to support his positions. An example is claiming that the Gospels say Mary consented to being the Mother of Christ as support for Talarico’s position on abortion. It’s been a while since I read the Gospels, but my recollection is that St. Gabriel the Archangel told Mary she would be the Mother of Christ, not that he asked her. He tied the claimed consent in with why abortion should be allowed, but I am blanking on the details of how he did that.

There was a long bit on paying legislators “living wages”. Talarico’s claim is that without a living wage, you limit the types of people that can serve as a legislator. Texas legislators get paid $7200/year plus per diem for session days. I rolled my eyes here. Legislators in NH get paid $100/year ($125/year for those in leadership positions) plus travel costs (gas and tolls) to and from Concord for session days. I know a few current and former NH legislators that hold day jobs.

Talarico and Rogan discussed voting bills that have come up in Texas. Talarico thinks Republicans are trying to suppress voting. I was sympathetic to one bit they talked about with people moving and how that gets handled in Texas. The reason I was sympathetic? Before I left PA, I was living in central PA. I moved around a bit while I lived there. After my last move during the time I lived in central PA I updated my voter registration and submitted a change of address form to the postal service. After the move, I received a notice at my new apartment from the County Board of Elections saying that I had been removed from the voter rolls because the Postal Service said I moved to an address which wasn’t on the voter rolls. Since the deadline for registering in the upcoming primary had passed, I would not be able to vote in the primary. I got nowhere with the County Board of Elections.

Talarico doesn’t like cancel culture. He thinks with social media we’ve lost the human connection that allows us to work through problems.

Talarico also thinks the Democrats have lost their way. They need to get back to supporting the common man.

This interview is ten months old. This interview and some recent memes about Talarico are all I know about Talarico. So I’m not going to make any predictions about the general election. However, I will say that this was a good presentation for Talarico even though I don’t agree with much of what he’s saying.

    • juris imprudent

They need to get back to supporting the common man.

Which of the six genders does the common man belong to?

      • rhywun

And what exactly is the “living wage” I am required to pay him?

    • mexican sharpshooter

The kid now had adult figures who cared about the kid. The state cut funding. The school laid off the therapist. The kid went back to the kid’s old ways. The kid got expelled.

If he cared at all about the kid, he’d give him what he thinks the kid needs, without the state. Just ask Alice Cooper who has a “church” in my neighborhood for disgruntled youth that he backs with his own name and funds very much from his own pocket.

      • The Hyperbole

My thoughts exactly, I’ll help the kids but as soon as I don’t get that sweet, sweet, gov’t money anymore they are on their own, Fuck that guy.

    • Ownbestenemy

10 mos old interview and that top/bottom thing just caught on? See? Even the stupid Right isn’t immune to dragging uo some BS.

  19. Raven Nation

“He thinks with social media we’ve lost the human connection that allows us to work through problems.” Reasonable point.

“An example is claiming that the Gospels say Mary consented to being the Mother of Christ.” Yeah, that’s an interesting take.

Luke 1:38: 38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.”

I’m curious how he came up with his position. The seminary he went to is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA) which is a more liberal part of the Presbyterian denomination. It has a mealy-mouthed pro-choice position. https://pcusa.org/how-we-serve/justice-peace/reproductive-rights

    • rhywun

That same General Assembly approved a report examining Disparities Experienced by Black Women and Girls, which directly addresses reproductive justice, including “the right to have a child, the right to parent a child in a safe and healthy environment, and the right to have access to needed resources, including quality medical care and a living wage.”

No idea what this gibberish is supposed to mean.

But yeah, using “faith” in some nebulous manner to arrive at a conclusion that one already wanted to arrive at isn’t exactly convincing to me.

      • Fourscore

Apparently the government gives those rights along with an EBT card, subsidized housing (affordable housing), etc. I didn’t see opportunity to provide for one’s self.

    • Ownbestenemy

I think going from ‘accepting God’s plan’ to ‘she consented’ is…modern gobblygook IMO.

That phrase “reproductive justice” really gets my hackles up.
