Grizzly II

I am not at my usual viewing spot tonight, but I assure you I am eating popcorn.

Grizzly II

Ted S specifically asked for Grizzly II, and here we are. Did I make my family watch this while we were in a Tennessee cabin surrounded by black bears? You bet. I made Ted proud. You will have to forgive me for cutting this short, as I am still in the mountains, with awful internet. By the time you read this I will probably be in Arkansas, the first stop on my way home to my beloved Texas.

So what is this Shakespearian cinematic experience about? Let’s ask IMDB:

All hell breaks loose when a giant Grizzly, reacting to the slaughter of Grizzlies by poachers, attacks at a massive big-band rock concert in the National Park.

Yes! Surely a celluloid masterpiece. I don’t want to spoil a moment of this film for any of you who have not seen it, so I am going to stop there.

Wait, what? My daughter just told me to tell the truth or I am going to Hell. Very well. This is what TUBI plot summary says:

Reviewers say ‘Grizzly II: Revenge’ is a complete disaster that wastes viewers’ time from start to finish. The editing stands out as particularly atrocious, with modern footage jarringly spliced into original material creating obvious anachronisms. The writing is universally condemned as terrible with a thin, ridiculous plot. Acting ranges from poor to unconvincing, pacing drags through endless concert sequences, and the story feels incomplete with abandoned plot threads. Only die-hard fans of bad cinema might find entertainment value.

Trivia! There is some stunning trivia, and I suggest you all go read it. Unbelievable stuff. I will leave you with this nugget from IMDB: “Charlie Sheen turned down the lead role of Daniel LaRusso in “The Karate Kid” (1984) in order to be in this film.”

And there you have it. I will say that I am a fan of bad cinema, and I enjoyed inflicting this on the family as we travelled through bear country. Thank you Ted, for your timely suggestion!

So watch! Or don’t! Everything is voluntary! Next week, I will be back home from all the weeks of travelling and I shall build out a schedule of all the audience appreciation requests, which should last for at least two months.

Speaking of bears, I got my first hat/tip yesterday, from Tonio.

    • Tonio

      And by “hat/tip,” mean….

Bears do take what we want, after all.

      • slumbrew

        Just the tip.

  2. Common Tater

“George Clooney, Laura Dern, Charlie Sheen, Louise Fletcher, John Rhys-Davies”

Impressive cast, even for a “good” movie.

    • R.J.

Ugh. I banned Samsung a while back. I had a friend whose Samsung washer destroyed her floor, got fixed, did it again and Samsung refused to help. I also had a TV that fried early, not even two years old. I had bought extended warranty. Took a class action (which timely, was resolved as the TV went out) to get it fixed. I immediately got rid of it once it was functional.

      • Common Tater

“Rossman demands that Samsung replace the drive itself instead of forcing him to pay nearly three times the original cost he paid for the drive to get a replacement, and is now suing to force the matter.”

Why did it triple in price?

      • cyto

The price of all memory is through the roof because AI data centers have contracted every single bit of silicon that the chip fabs can produce over the next few years.

This is why Elon is building the world’s largest integrated chip production facility and buying out all the chip making machinery that he can. He is bringing the entire chip fab stack in house so he doesnt face supply chain issues.

      • Sensei

        A + I = 0 RAM + 0 GPU + 0 SSD

      • R.J.

Hmm… Memory cost? Silicon shortage? I am far too ADHD to listen to the whole thing to find out.

    • R.J.

*Never talks to R.J. or Ted S again*

      • Ted S.

Oh, I think Rhywun will enjoy the new-wave music….

      • R.J.

Yes. I keed! Of course he will talk to us.

More fun trivia, cuz, uh. Damn. (How’d they attract talent? I guess they weren’t known then. $’s the answer, but, uh. Whoops!)

“The day after George Clooney, Laura Dern, and Charlie Sheen arrived in Hungary to start shooting their scenes for the film, its co-producer, Joe Proctor, told his fellow co-producer, Suzanne G. Nagy, that there was no more money to make it. He left 30 minutes later, abandoning 300 people that were already on the set to their fates. Nagy kept this to herself, desperately looking for any way to keep the film moving ahead. Luckily, a Japanese investor showed up and put up enough money to continue making the film. Nagy later went on to say that working with Clooney, Dern, and Sheen was terrific: all three were excited to be there and even pitched in to help by moving the film’s sets and cameras and making themselves available whenever they were needed.”

    • Ted S.

Yeah; the original scenes were done in 1983, but financial issues and the Communist government of Hungary intervening meant the original elements didn’t get back into American hands until about 2020 when supplemental material was added (note the ravers in the concert scenes).

There was a movie Grizzly released in 1976 as part of the cycle of animal horror films in the 70s. Jaws would be the most famous, but there’s Piranha as well as Tentacles (with an all-star cast!) among others.

      • R.J.

I did think about linking to that, it is also on Tubi. I ran short on time to get this done.
        Here it is:
        https://link.tubi.tv/syC2IncHT3b
I hope it works. I am on mobile tonight.

      • rhywun

I would like to check out Budapest some day before it goes tits up like most of the other European capitals.

    • Evan from Evansville

John Rhys-Davies is in it?! He’s good at his job. How much dick did André Szöts suck to get this made?! (Not enough, apparently. But I’m sure that Japanese investor got his ‘hand shake’ in same fashion…)

      • R.J.

And who was that investor? Inquiring minds want to know.

  4. Common Tater

So now they are padding the run time with nature footage?

    • rhywun

      And random music.

I guess that’s part of the plot… for some reason.

      • Ted S.

The plot, such as it is, involves holding a Woodstock-type concert just where the bear is supposed to rampage. That’s how you get the crowd for the suspense of how many people will the bear kill? Jaws wouldn’t be Jaws, after all, if Amity weren’t a tourist hotspot.

So the new-wave music, which, if you listen carefully you’ll notice is being sung in Hungarian, is reasonably plot-adjacent. But they padded it with more recent footage.

But the whole thing is ridiculous, which is why I thought it would be perfect for Glibflicks.

      • rhywun

Oh, it’s a glorious train wreck. I’m not paying enough attention to discern the recent footage – except some of the nature shots look pretty professional, more than… the rest.

      • rhywun

Oh mercy… some of the concert footage is obviously from decades later LOL

      • Ted S.

Yeah, Greenpoint wasn’t a happening place in the 80s AFAIK and the lighting clearly doesn’t match

    • Threedoor

I had always assumed the supply of soccer far outweighed the demand.

    • creech

Funny, NBC national news never mentioned any violence. It was all how giddy and proud Mexicans were with a win for their team.

    • Chafed

Someone’s to proud to be a hooker.

  5. DEG

I was out with some former coworkers and got home about ten minutes ago.

I’ll have to queue this one up alongside last week’s movie.

    Thanks RJ and Ted’S””.

    • Chafed

You may not want to thank anyone before you watch it.

  6. Common Tater

    Hungarian music sucks ass.

  7. R.J.

I am still working suggestions. Some of you pick really hard to find films. I have a few that have been on the list for years, still not available.

This will be the next three weeks:
    Dark City (CPRM)
    Brotherhood of the Wolf (Evan)
    The Apple (TedS)

    • Threedoor

      I love Dark City.
I’ve started Brotherhood of the Wolf a couple times. Forgotten in had started it and started it again.

      • slumbrew

“Le Pacte des loups” is goofy fun. Plus, Monica Bellucci. Rawr.

      • EvilSheldon

Dark City is one of my very favorite movies.

Possibly because the first time I saw it, I was late and missed the theatrical release prologue that spoils the entire plot…

    • Evan from Evansville

      I’m so fucking honored! WOWZA!

I think Dark City has a cult, underrated feel to it. No idea about The Apple. Brotherhood is not a good movie, but it’s very pretty. Well made, unless I’m quite mistaken. And no. I’m not including Monica Belucci’s very visible assets in the flick, but it’s true, they’re spectacular.

Haven’t seen it in forever. It was so up in 14-15yo Ev’s Werewolf: The Apocalypse reading and imagining phase. They have cool special weapons! Unless I’m REALLY remembering incorrectly! And tits!

In seriousness, I recall it as fun, meaningless popcorn fare. (Pretty, sexy, *French* popcorn. Much sexier than Pie popcorn. (Apologies.))

    • Aloysious

      Woo Hoo!

Dark City is trippy, and BotW is fun as well, even none of the French surrender.

      • Aloysious

Editor, darn it: even though none of the Frenchmen surrender properly.

    • Chafed

La Femme Nikita. The original one in French with subtitles.

    • Ted S.

The Apple is going to be the “Musical Matinee” on TCM on June 27 (should be noon ET) for those of you who still have the traditional cable channels.

  8. Common Tater

George Clooney, Laura Dern, and Charlie Sheen, in it for maybe five minutes?

    • R.J.

They were too busy building sets and contacting their lawyers.

    • rhywun

I’m more baffled that Louise Fletcher was somehow persuaded to waste more than five minutes on this.

      • R.J.

Lots of drugs must have been involved.

      • rhywun

I have no idea if she was into drugs but I do note this was the same year as Brainstorm – one of my all-time favorites and pretty druggy itself. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      • Ted S.

I wonder how many Hollywood stars saw movies like this as a sort of working vacation. A chance to go to Europe and see some exotic locales, and pick up some money.

  9. Tonio

Grazie, R.J., for running this classic bearsploitation masterpiece.

    • rhywun

I can’t believe I’m saying this but for once I feel that something needed more bear.

      • Evan from Evansville

Apparently the bear scenes are the worst in the flick. Comically bad, and not in the good way. (Well, right now it’s the good way.)

I hope this causes unbearable cognitive dysfunction.

    • Aloysious

      I can bearly contain myself.

      The anticipation is unbearable.

Until I scratch this itch (I blame shpip), you’ll have to bear with me.

    • rhywun

No idea who that is or where it is or what is going on there. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      • Chafed

I have no idea where this is or what’s being protested. What I do know is a protestor didn’t get out of the way and got dragged. Isn’t that enough?

      • Gustave Lytton

        It’s Portland. ice facility.

      • Evan from Evansville

My first thought was ‘That neighborhood’s coooold.’ Too a long time for anyone to act like they gave a shit about her. They kinda, eventually, helped her up. Second thought: Looks like a broken arm’

DNC wants more martyrs. I bet they’ll get ’em.

    • Aloysious

      +1 for not stopping.

+1 for demonstrating that pain is an excellent teacher.

+1 for the comment, “Is the truck ok?”

  10. ron73440

I enjoy bad movies periodically, I’ll try to watch this one this weekend.

As always, thanks for doing these R.J.

    • Brochettaward

The story is thousands of years old. Obviously it needs to be updated by midwits in the 21st century rather than left the way it was for the last few thousands of years.

    • DrOtto

      Cohen Brothers did it better.

    • Ted S.

We get to colonize old stories *and* accuse you of the ism of the day if you point this out.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

I’m just glad they didn’t make Odysseus queer, truly unheard of amongst the Ancient Greeks.

    • UnCivilServant

Come to Honey Harvest. It won’t be a summer vacation, but you know there will be kindred spirits there.

      • Sean

Interesting thought, but I don’t fly and thats too much time on the road to relax.

        🤷🏼‍♂️

      • UnCivilServant

        Does not compute.

        A long drive is relaxing.

    • Gender Traitor

Good morning, Sean, U, Ted’S., homey, and Stinky!

      • Gender Traitor

        How are you today, U?

      • UnCivilServant

I was doing laundry between 1 and 3 am.

I haven’t requested time off in september because I can’t remember what calendar date the Honey Harvest is supposed to be on.

I am such a screw up that I don’t have contact info for the guy who’s supposed to fix my back steps.

I need an oil change for my car.

        I won’t have a free weekend until the 27th.

      • Gender Traitor

I THINK HH is always the third Sunday in September, which would be the 20th this year, but I hope 4(20) appears to confirm or correct that.

      • Gender Traitor

Is that not a good date for you?

      • UnCivilServant

I have no plans that far out just yet.

      • UnCivilServant

I just put in for those two weeks centered on that weekend. I just have to plan a visit.

The hotel in Superior I’ve used perviously put me in a room that dissatisfied me last time – Any recommendations?

      • Gender Traitor

I found the Good Ol’ Days Resort in Nisswa on booking.com, and we liked it. I believe Stoic Ron may have stayed there last year on my recommendation, so perhaps one of us could ask him today if he’s around to comment on his post.

      • UnCivilServant

        Sure, I’ll try their accommodations.

      • Not Adahn

I have good luck with AirBnB, but I am very appreciative of wacky options. Last time I worked Area 7 my room was the library of a Victorian mansion that had a bed dropped in the middle.

All politicians regardless of nation or party or even righteousness should live constant fear of prison if they aren’t currently in prison.

      • Ted S.

And yet everyone knows it’s only People Power Party politicians who are going to be jailed.

Much like the doublethink in the US about Trump allegedly politicizing the courts against his enemies, but none of the cases against him being blatantly political at all, no sirree.

I am not in an offensive mood. It’s undoubtedly my kneejerk contrarianism reacting to NPR’s hate coming out of the radio.
