Sunday Morning Clean Up and Clean Out Links

We have come through the worst of Alumni Reunion Weekend in more or less one piece. I can’t speak for our customers- wine sales were amazing. I have to restock nearly everything. We have the last remnants coming through today, but then we pick up all the pieces, sweep out the refuse, and maybe catch our breaths. Prime came down last night to catch the festivities and watch our crew in action. Sweet Baby James charmed the masses.

Side note since I may not be around for comments: Pie, please email me, omwc at glibertarians dot com.

Birthdays today include the one who didn’t get shot; a guy with the most perfect Mormon name ever; a guy who was eminently forgettable; the sound of Rankin/Bass horror; one of a long and honorable line of White House shills; a strong argument for term limits; the worst president since the last one; and one of my favorite corner backs.

The party will quiet down a bit for Links.

Lucy is pulling the football. Again. Not that any of us can see what the “deal” is, you have to pass it to read it redux.

Totally not grift.

World’s smallest violin.

I’d have more respect if it weren’t White Claw.

How about, and hear me out on this, we, I dunno, GET RID OF THOSE FUCKING CHECKBOXES?

New York, New York.

Inevitable, and wait until they get better at it.

A hideous monument to a Trump-size ego.

“Hey, guys, I have a remarkably stupid idea. Literally.”

The virtues of diversity.

Another cult band of the Old Guy’s youth, our version of Spike Jones. Just a fun time.

Fun, possibly apocryphal, story about Viv Stanshall of the Bonzos. He checked himself into an insane asylum. Grew bored, so offered to visitors to foam at the mouth (by eating soap). Then sang the madness song from the opera Lucia do Lammermore. They told him he was sane and sent him home.

    • Chafed

I still don’t understand why this is a thing. My team won so I’ll destroy someone else’s property doesn’t make any sense to me.

  2. R C Dean

    the worst president since the last one;

I would rank him as certainly better than Biden, Obama, or Bush Jr. I don’t loathe him like I did Clinton, so probably better than Clinton as well. Bush Sr. was pretty much of a cipher, so maybe not the worst President since Reagan.

Man, talk about a series of low bars.

    • Sensei

Funny, I loathed Clinton too, but looking back and compared to others he is your typical blue dog of the era.

      • R C Dean

I suspect it’s been long enough that the sharp edges have worn off in memory.

      • Ted S.

No attack ever fed a hungry child.

      • Drake

Clinton was cagey. When the Republicans won big in the midterms, he just went with it, compromised, and took credit. No current Democrat leader is smart enough to do that.

      • The Last American Hero

He appointed his wife to a non-existent cabinet position to nationalize healthcare, dropped bombs all over the place, got involved in Bosnia because reasons, and weaponized the alphabet agencies, including the IRS, against political foes.

But compared to what was to follow, he was better.

      • Threedoor

He had Gingrich to keep him in line.

  3. Ted S.

I’d have more respect if it weren’t White Claw.

How much bail does Brett need?

“Hey, guys, I have a remarkably stupid idea. Literally.”

I do find it amusing that apparently the Dem voters would rather take another shot with Harris than Gov. Hairgel.

    • EvilSheldon

Why not? Harris was, and is, the perfect chief executive for the people who run the Democratic Party – a brainless empty suit with a phone, a pen, and lots of obligations.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Don’t forget, she is a “woman of color”, thus her qualifications are at the top of the Dem list.

    “That’s grift” [a la Tom Hardy’s “that’s bait” delivery]

  6. DEG

Privatized airport security, meanwhile, is not a novel idea in the United States.

Wasn’t it all private before the TSA? I didn’t fly much before the TSA but I don’t remember any government employees in the security lines pre-TSA beyond maybe a cop or two watching over everything.

    • R C Dean

I recall lighting a cigarette on my way to the terminal from my car, and being in my seat on the plane before finishing it.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

        Baller.

    • Ownbestenemy

Yes it was private or airport authority ran.

      • Tres Cool

OBE I saw your earlier comment. Condolences to you and the family for you loss(es).

Thanks buddy. Mrs. OBE is a wreck. Daddy’s girl

That was ramping up when I was there a few weeks ago. Glad I missed the worst of it.

    • Drake

      No brown ale?
I’d be debating between the lager and a stout.

    • Nephilium

The Blonde, the American Pale Ale, and whatever the bartender was most proud of having on tap.

      • R.J.

        Also a good answer.

      • EvilSheldon

I’ve (reluctantly) cut out beer, now that I’m pushing on towards fifty.

      • R.J.

I tend to avoid it, it is seriously bloating at my age as well. Whiskey and bourbon are preferred at Stately R.J. Manor.

      • DrOtto

I have two beers then switch over to something less bloating, last night it was G&Ts. It was too muggy for bourbon.

      • EvilSheldon

I had a couple St. Germain 75’s last night, just because it was hot and there was a mini-split of Louis Bouillot in the fridge that’d been eyballin’ me.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

I have two beers and then call it. It really does start hitting you at 55.

    • R.J.

Not sure what temperature it is there, I would probably start with the basic lager and then move ti the blonde. Has to be cooler than 50 degrees for me to want dark beer, and Hell has to freeze over before I touch an IPA.

      • Chafed

        IPA is the devil’s work.

      • DEG

A proper English IPA is good.

The tough part is finding one. No one in America makes one as far as I know. Samuel Smith’s is OK if you can find it.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Either the Blond or the Fruited Sour.

I mean, its still summer over their, right?

      • Threedoor

It’s at night, we are meeting with the local talent afterall.

How about, and hear me out on this, we, I dunno, GET RID OF THOSE FUCKING CHECKBOXES?

It’s right there in the article… that will never happen because “the rules for counting race will help decide who gets political power”.

And nothing – NOTHING – is more important than getting political power.

    • Old Man With Candy

Hush up, the heterosexuals are talking.

    • EvilSheldon

That’s nice. Now do Tom Steyner.

    • Chafed

Government help is an interesting phrase. Tesla relies on carbon credits Team Blue dreamed up. We wouldn’t have any meaningful space transport for cargo and humans but for SpaceX.

    • Threedoor

A grant to develop a service for the government is simply a prepayment. Had he not delivered on the contract they would have an argument. Same with a
      contract for services.

A loan that was paid back. Government should not provide loans.

Tax credits to buy electric cars? Those shouldn’t exist either.

Had Musk stayed on the political left he could have failed, pocketed all the cash and they would have praised him saying that he would have been a success if only the electric car subsidies continued.

  13. rhywun

“That’s what happens everywhere around the world when a team wins,” Sabbr said.

He has a point. I don’t get it myself but a certain segment of humans do celebrate their happiness with spasms of random violence. The key is to be nowhere near such people when you know such a circumstance could come about.

    • Ownbestenemy

The question is when did we transition from jubilee and into car-flipping. 80s? 90s?

      • rhywun

Good question. Another symptom of the slow decline into third-world territory that is going on across “the west”?

      • The Last American Hero

Who is this we? I remember a local team winning a championship in the mid-80’s. Downtown, we saw robbing, looting, cars being torched and full scale riots.

Meanwhile, in the suburbs, people were driving down the street honking their horns nonstop.

      • DrOtto

80s, I went to St Cloud State in ’89. In ’88 they overturned/burned some police cars after a sportsball tournament. In ’89 they were very heavy-handed in breaking up parties.

    Random thoughts:

I see that the two “Bulgarians” (actually, I think, Gypsies) who were harassing Scottish Axe Girl just got convicted of harassing and assaulting her and her sister. The amazing thing to me was the media and government op to character-assassinate (a) a 12 year old girl (b) when it was perfectly and instantly obvious that she was being followed, filmed, and harassed by an adult man. I mean, the video he took himself was of a girl being followed and harassed by him.

As we come up on the 250th anniversary of ‘Murica, I wonder if there will be a 300th. I think its a long shot, myself, simply because I don’t see how the nation-state (a) avoids and/or (b) survives the collapse of the dollar and the ensuing economic, social, and political catastrophe.

Also, look what is happening in Argentina. Turnarounds can be unexpected and the results can happen quickly.

Out of the at least 12 anti-ICE rioters arrested last weekend for assaulting federal agents or smashing cars…

Only three were from New Jersey, where the violent clashes have raged for three weeks since 300 detainees went on a hunger strike over what they claimed were inhumane conditions inside….

Far-left organizations have supplied protestors with military goggles, helmets, knee and shin pads to face off with federal officials — as they broadcast the chaos to millions of followers on social media.

At least two have connections to the radical nonprofit Sunrise Movement, among the organizers of the Delaney Hall mayhem….

The last time I went to Australia, I bought a local SIM card for my phone.

When I was activating the SIM card at a kiosk at a cell phone merchant stand in the airport, I had to put in an address. The address had to be an Australian address. I thought about using my hotel address. The kiosk had a phone which I used to call the mobile phone company’s help line.

Australian law at the time required you to have an Australian address registered to the SIM as an “anti-terrorism measure”. The person at the mobile phone company was very helpful. For tourists like me, every Australian mobile phone company has a default address you can use. The person gave me the address. I put it into the kiosk, and everything worked.

The US Treasury monthly statement for May is out. The statement opens with this highlight:

“May has been a deficit month 71 times out of 72 fiscal years since there are usually no major corporate or individual tax due dates in this month.”

Huh. I thought spending was the reason the Feds run deficits.

Summary of May’s receipts and outlays, rounded to the nearest billion and compared to May FY 2025:

Receipts: $336 billion FY2025 May Receipts: $371 billion
Outlays: $628 billion FY2025 May Outlays: $687 billion
Deficit: $293 billion FY2025 May deficit: $316 billion

Customs duty revenue (i.e. tariffs) for May is negative. I’m assuming this is due to refunds and so I am not going to read much into it.

FY2026 YTD alongside FY2025 comparable period rounded to the nearest billion:

Receipts: $3,656 billion FY2025 comparable period receipts: $3,482 billion
Outlays: $4,902 billion FY2025 comparable period outlays: $4,846 billion
Deficit: $1,246 billion FY2025 comparable period deficit: $1,364 billion

Budget projections for FY2026 and FY2027 full year have not changed since last month.

I looked at the outlays for the Department of Education. FY2026 YTD outlays are $83 billion, FY2025 comparable period is $93 billion, and FY2026 full year estimate is $62 billion.

Interest on the debt is the second biggest line item in FY2026 YTD.

“Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche dropped a bombshell of data on Thursday describing Trump administration efforts to find hundreds of thousands of missing unaccompanied alien children (UACs). UACs are minors trafficked to the U.S. border and smuggled into the U.S. under the guise of reuniting with family. In reality, many have been trafficked through a complex network run by transnational criminal organizations.

More than 475,000 UACs were trafficked to the U.S. during the Biden administration. More than 300,000 were unaccounted as of the end of 2024, Blanche said at a press conference in Washington, D.C.”

    Man of the people

“When I was a child growing up in East Africa, there were towering figures, and then there was George Weah, the first African player to ever win the Ballon d’Or,” he said. “If you had told seven-year-old me that I would one day go into the same line of work as this man, I would be extremely disappointed to understand that you meant politics.” Then he got in a subtle dig at Weah for playing for Chelsea — a rival to Mamdani’s Arsenal, whose uniform the mayor turned into a custom kurta during the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha in May.

But he has also treated his commentary on sports as almost separate from his broader political agenda. While Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) (still angry about the Brooklyn Dodgers’ owner moving them to Los Angeles in his youth) calls MLB team owners “baseball oligarchs,” Mamdani has assiduously avoided comments on Knicks owner James Dolan’s controversial invite to Trump to watch the finals, aside from noting that he would be in a much cheaper part of Madison Square Garden, with a standing-room-only ticket.

Just a regular guy who wants to tear down the oligarchy and replace it with the dictatorship of the proletariat.

Some investors consider Musk a genius and a visionary; others just want a piece of the cash grab. But all of them are pretending that this IPO can be separated from the repugnant things about Musk — his promotion of white supremacy and antisemitism, the poison his social media network pours into global debate every day, the damage he has done to the federal government. None of that exists in a separate sphere from his businesses. It is not a hobby or a sidelight. It is the very heart of who he is and the world he is seeking to create. Musk and his IPO are where greed meets hate, and that stain should be on anyone who participates.

Blood guilt for anyone who invests in any of Musk’s enterprises.
