I’m off shortly to Prime’s daughter’s wedding. It’s a mixed marriage, a Yid marrying the Mackerel-snapper, but it will be a Jewish wedding, albeit (obviously) Reform. My only question remains: at a lesbian Jewish wedding, who breaks the wine glass? I’ll be paying particular attention to that. There will be the awkward moments with Prime’s ex, but I’m cool with hanging out with her brother, a Jesuit priest. And doing everything I can to avoid nosing into their family affair. That can come later. BTW, Prime’s reaction to us hanging out last weekend with the delightful Pie was, “I could listen to his accent all day…”
Speaking of reprobates and August 1, there’s a pile of interesting birthdays today including The Man Who Would Be Messiah; a guy who should have wondered why Jews keep getting born with foreskins; a guy getting cancelled who has made everyone hate Baltimore sports fans; a guy who, if there weren’t a Theodore Dreiser, would easily have been the windiest American writer; a master of spin but who was not a stern fellow; a Jew with a gun; the guy who absolutely stole The Twelve Chairs; a hilariously stereotypical Swamp Creature; the best nine-fingered guitarist in rock; and a guy who once dated a girl who had the same unusual name that he did.
Links also have the same name.
One more reason to avoid academic labs. “Let’s turn some retarded loons loose in a chemistry lab. What could go wrong?”
The end of Chevron Deference doesn’t seem to have registered.
So it was all bullshit. Where’s my fainting couch?
“With GLP-1, I don’t have to raise my own meat any more.”
“I didn’t know that the Fascists would come after ME!”
The winner happens to be the one we have on our beer list.
So if you read past the lede, Teflon cookware isn’t actually hazardous and the supposed replacements suck. But you need to be afraid and if you use them, you’re a bad person. Bonus quotes from our local school. Archive version.
This song has a particular resonance for me. And it’s a delightful modern rendition of a great classic.

My Hexclad pan is two years old, used close to daily and has not experienced any degradation of the surface. For what that is worth.
Have heard good things. My cheaper T-fals look like they have been run through the dishwasher a few times too many.
I wash my T-Fals by hand.
Micro Teflon plastics!
Cast iron family here.

Happy birthday Ilya Ilf!
So Oprah’s school in South Africa opened more than 20 years ago, and has graduated just over 500 girls? That’s not a school so much as a classroom.
That is what I was thinking. Plus the amount of resources, such as acreage and library size, makes it even more weird.
Winfrey’s charitable foundation ran and funded the school, but it was always part of the agreement that the academy campus near Johannesburg be ultimately handed over to the provincial education department, the academy said.
I assume this will be run as well as pretty much everything else in South Africa, and will be a cluster of abandoned buildings in twenty years.
twenty years.
Look at the optimist over here.
Yup. Article requires some serious reading-between-the-lines.
She’s getting out while gettin’ is good.
Is the EFF coming for Oprah’s school?
Spot the stolen base.
Journalism majors really are duking it out with education majors for the dumbest college graduates, aren’t they?
* Women’s Studies majors have entered the chat *
*Sociology and psych departments wave furious jazz hands*
As a dual psych/soc major (wtf was I thinking?) I can vouch.
They’re right about Pacifico being the best though. Goddamn is that shit good.
Meh. Bohemia or GTFO.
On the Mexican beer front I’m a Modello with lime guy.
Communications majors: four years of weekday parties, a couple dozen football games on campus, and a degree that says “I can be trained to do light office work.”

You’ll note there’s no mention in the article of why the men were wanted
RESIST!
STOP RESISTING!
Also, they should change the name to the Ulster Defense Force. I would make more sense as these jackasses love the Black and Tans.
According to half the country, those men were not wanted for any reason other than to feed Literally Hitler’s blood lust.
“Sure, I voted for the Leopards Eating Faces Party, but I didn’t think the leopard was going to eat my face!”
Communism is great, until you are a property owner.
huh? So Kathy signed this tax law knowing it was going to be used to create a hit-list of almost a million wreckers and kulaks.
You know why.
If we cut through all the bullshit, I’ve come to the what I think actually happened.
The tax and ownership list has always been a public record. I’m not sure if it was contemplated pre or post passage of the law, but somebody quickly figured out that since it was public data – why not sort it and select the people the tax applies to.
It’s a douche move, but not especially surprising given the hunky commie.
I agree that the complete property tax roll may be public but “narrowing it down” in such as way as to include I suspect hundreds of thousands of owners the new tax does not even apply to is disgusting.
And I have yet to see a pic of that piece of shit where he isn’t flop-sweating. And maybe get a shave, asshole.
pic of that piece of shit
The pic in that piece – holy shit. I mean I understand how such things can be manipulated, but if it was, someone did a real good job. Dead eyes. He looks exactly like you’d expect a serial killer to look. Or someone signing a death warrant for thousands of people. There’s something in there broken and evil.
Much like Romo always looks drunk lol…
Mamdani always looks like a crazed communist.
Looks like?
Brad Mehldau is (mostly) always good.
How anyone thinks Pacifico is better than Tecate, let alone Bohemia, is beyond me.
It’s by far our best selling beer.
Everyone is getting sick of IPAs. And summer.
Pretty good vid on Mamdani’s tax bullshit (about 15min)
https://youtu.be/g6HTgv5qK6U?is=wytAHiFsJTcgNaOE
Looks like a plausibly deniable way to go after white folks.
(((white))) folks
Them too and for Mamdani’s crew a happy accident but looks primarily melanin based or that’s the effect at least.
Hadn’t thought of the scam aspect, both by the city and from squatters and other scammers.
Amazing. The evil here is off the charts.
Fish and Wildlife Service
Sometimes we forget about the older agencies without a Constitutional remit.
I learned a long time ago to avoid buying property with an easement on it.
Especially a conservation easement as they are FOREVER.
True non-stick cookware:
Step 1: Melt copious amounts of butter, beef tallow, or lard to warm pan.
Step 2: There is no step 2.
Mrs. Dean manages to cook one amazing meal after another without a single nonstick pan in the house.
I don’t need one, but I have one (actually several, but one main pan) and use it regularly. It’s a good tool for certain dishes, but if I suddenly lost it, I have carbon steel, stainless, aluminum, and cast iron in my arsenal. It’s just that some dishes are just easier to do with Teflon pans in the same way that some dishes are easier to do in cast iron.
Having transitioned into pro cooking, I appreciate tools that help speed, reliability, and consistency, and for things like Western-style omelets, Spanish tortilla, and crepes, they make life easier.
Aluminum foil and a countertop oven. I don’t complain though, happy/lucky to get anything prepared these days.
Ditto on my wife.
I just learned how to cook on stainless. Turns out it’s not that hard to keep stuff from sticking. Now I have to figure out how to avoid the lacquering between deep cleanings, but that’s a minor issue.
I have one stainless pan and in a pinch I know how to use it but I’ve also wrecked some food in it so I am not 100% confident with it.
Bar Keepers Friend.
Dayum… zing!
‘Cause no one wants it.
“Vacation homes in Spanish Africa” is probably a real estate ad you’ll never see.
It’s on the Mediterranean – could be nice. Just don’t make friends with the neighbors.
Doesn’t the supposedly big issue with nonstick come up when they flake and chip? Just toss it and get another.
Yeah, I replace my main non-stick pan (daily driver) about once a year. $50, no big deal. Works great.
Same. TFal even has a pattern on the surface. when it fades, chuck it.
Same. TFal even has a pattern on the surface. when it fades, chuck it.
We do too. Not that the wife needs non-stick, but I, being indifferent to food, do.
Happy Birthday Phil Keaggy!
I was thinking Tony Iommi.
Technically, Tony Iommi would be the best eight-fingered guitarist in rock.
Sure, give me the names of each of the 48,000.
Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, has called for an urgent meeting of EU interior ministers after what he called some member states’ “selfish, polarising and unlawful reaction”
Even if true they’ve already established that they can come and go at will and if they decide to not leave the current Spanish government isn’t going to do a damn thing. If I was an ethnic Spaniard in Cueta I’d GTFO because they’ll most assuredly be back.
And in greater numbers.
Which is pretty much the whole plan here. Current prime douchebag, being a socialist and all, probably would love to hand over Cueta and the other enclave (Melilla) which wouldn’t be popular politically, but would love the EU to push for it, taking it out of his hands.
Honestly have no idea if any of that “neurodivergent” stuff is legitimate, so I hesitate to make fun of it like I want to.
If it’s bullshit attention-getting, I don’t want that person in my lab. If it’s real, I don’t want that person in my lab. So, either way.

Good point
I’ve only ever seen it claimed by or discussed seriously by the usual suspects who make shit up. That’s a sign.
From little (thankfully) I’ve seen in practice, it’s largely:
1) An excuse to behave like an asshole and instead of being slapped around for it, get treated with suicidal empathy.
2) An easy means of claiming to be special and profound without ever having to do anything special or have a profound thought.
3) An easy means of getting special treatment as in “I get extra time to complete activity X”
So I don’t hesitate to make fun of it. If I’m wrong I can admit so when there is any evidence presented. And even then, plenty of legitimate real things are still worthy of being made fun of, so even that’s not a barrier. But, overwhelmingly, the phenomena strikes me as largely bullshit and way for normal people to lay claim to ‘special’ status.
“If a being does not keep pace with its companions, perhaps it is because it hears a different drummer. Or maybe it’s just a weirdo.”/Sandra Boynton (roughly, from memory)
The fact that we are having discussions about specific communist policies of an avowed socialist mayor of more than one US city tells me something very grim about the future. We love to gripe about this aspect and that aspect of the Constitution that is being ignored, but at this point that is akin to worrying about nasty rash while drowning in blood from a sucking chest wound. The dominant group in one of the major political parties openly talks about ending ‘whiteness’, and seizing the means of production.
And literally trashing the Constitution itself.
Grim indeed. It can only lead to something bad.
In local Libertarian politics. The eyebrows work well with the piercing and nose ring.
Appellate Court removes Libertarian candidate from NJ-7 ballot after deputy attorney general declines to back constitutional claim
Yeah… I figured, which is why I refused to chime in on that shit-show.
We’re all neurodivergent now.
Exactly. And once it becomes so common so as not to be special anymore, they’ll (you know, them, the cabal) come up with some other piece of nonsense in the never ending quest to be thought of as special without having to expend the effort to actually be special.
Somebody light the JI symbol!
I weighed in at .5 lb higher than when I left for my trip. That’s pretty good for a week of indulgences.
No stone unturned
Faced with a narrow path to winning control of the U.S. House, Democrats are seeing fresh opportunity in a northeast Ohio congressional seat where the Republican incumbent is facing mounting pressure over domestic abuse allegations in a bitter and drawn-out dispute with his ex-wife.
Allegations against U.S. Rep. Max Miller, a White House adviser during President Donald Trump’s first term, have been public for years but have recently drawn increased media scrutiny amid an escalating legal back-and-forth with his former spouse, who is the daughter of U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio. That has Democrats sensing Miller could be vulnerable in a district he won two years ago with just over 51% of the vote.
Over the past week, they have called for Miller to resign, requested a congressional ethics investigation and suggested more help could be directed in the fall toward his Democratic opponent, union ironworker Brian Poindexter. Miller has denied the abuse allegations and filed defamation lawsuits against his ex-wife and a second accuser.
He’s a politician. We already know he’s a horrible person.
It’s not like the Dems can or should be running on issues or policy.
The House Majority PAC, a super political action committee aimed at electing a Democratic majority, said it is monitoring the race’s dynamics as part of its strategy to push deeper into GOP territory in this year’s midterm elections.
“HMP is willing to do whatever it takes to take back the House, and nothing is off the table,” spokesperson CJ Warnke said.
You don’t say.
So, I bought a new Bluetooth speaker for my office because my husband’s stupid JBL can’t handle bass and I got tired of scrounging around my house for whatever Bluetooth POS he won 16 years ago in that one contest.
I go to ChatGPT and said, “Bluetooth. Good bass.” It gives me a few choices. I get the pretty one.
I get to opening this and my husband said, “What’d you get?”
“Something called a Klipsch.”
So after picking himself up off the floor, he said, “You weren’t kidding when you said ‘expensive.'”
“Like, what? It was $225.” Even by my broke-ass standards that’s not EXPENSIVE.
Anyway, so I guess I did good.
😀👍
In days of yore (and your husband is definitely yoreful), Klipsch was known for very large and very expensive speakers. Thousands of pre-inflation bucks. After Paul Klipsch died, the brand was eaten by a mass-market company, about 15 years ago if memory serves.
I think they still build the original style horn speakers in the U.S., but the other stuff is all contract license.
Memory. Have not googled.
Generally, I use FiiO for my left speaker and Heco for my far right speaker.
Things what make you say, “Huh”:
I have here a letter from the IRS informing me they can’t send my refund because they don’t have my bank info for direct deposit. I was not expecting a refund. Do they just send these to everybody?
*It beats the hell out of being informed all my accounts have been seized.
That comes after you give them your bank info thinking you’re getting a refund.
Is it really from the IRS? sounds phishy
Good point. If you do try to contact the IRS, do NOT use the phone number or URL in the letter.

Family trip to Michigan City begins today. M&D and brother’s fam will be there til the 4th, but I’m returning tomorrow, so we’re going in three different cars. This gives me the distinct advantage of having two solo drives. Thinking of albums to listen to. Turn on the Bright Lights (Interpol) is the leading candidate. It’s been a while and lord, it’s good.
Well, after talk with my boss on Wed, he made it clear I pretty much have “the week” to figure shit out. I made a nice (kinda complicated) checklist to use when ‘auditing’ real estate files, which I believe streamlined things for me, but… I only did two on Fri, I believe six on Thurs and possibly four that particular Wed. (They each are supposed to take 10-15min.) So, clearly a small sample of tuned-up work after my talk with the president, whom I greatly impressed with my initiative on finding and getting the gig.
Now, another new dude came on Friday, but I really do think he was pinch-hitting for the quite-pregnant manager who hired me. I suppose he could also be my replacement, but I really, really don’t think so. He was in her office and not doing the work me and Other New Guy do. Still got me thinking last night, though I didn’t put that thought together yesterday at work. Was thinking maybe I misunderstood, and that this week *was* my last week. I hope I’m welcome when I arrive on Monday morning. *frumpy*
Gonna leave here around noon and spend the day up there with everyone, likely cruising back tomorrow afternoon during the Yankees /Cubs game. I’ll get back in time to get groceries for the week and coast into my evening, without any added rush. It’ll be a big one, next, to see how this ‘current’ direction I’m on will go.
To clear shit from my own mind and perhaps yours, no, the stabbing in Carmel was not ‘mine’ in Indiana. That was in Carmel, NY (Putnam County). Carmel, Indiana isn’t that Carmel, nor is it Carmel-by-the-Sea in California where Clint Eastwood was mayor for a couple years.
Fuck the NY one, but I’d much prefer Clint as mayor. (Maybe not, but still.) It’s not “car-MEL” like so many think. “CAR-mel,” is proper. So there ya have it. ‘Car-o-mel’ is a pretty shitty brown confection, and I say it the same as this Hoosier suburb.
Hey! Kraft Caramels got me through high school when I was off all chocolate because of my acne! 😒
Carmel-by-the-sea is one of the prettiest areas of Norcal coast. Expensive ASF now, but drop dead gorgeous.
I liked Pacifico when it was cheap, it isn’t cheap anymore.
Mmhm
It’s a mid beer, relaxing on a hot day, but not worth premium prices.

Careful, vampires have a way of bewitching women.
Is it really from the IRS? sounds phishy
That also occurred to me. It certainly looks official. It could also be the IRS trying to prod me into setting up an on line account. As per GT I will use an alternate means of contact if I decide to do so.
Letter also says it will take longer if they have to mail me a check. I can wait.
“The Exorcist star Linda Blair’s home was raided by law enforcement on Friday, in a joint operation between Los Angeles County Department of Regional Planning and Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC).
A representative from the DACC told the Daily Mail the 67-year-old actress’s permits to house rescue animals have been expired since 2023….
According to TMZ, the horror movie star is permitted to house about 60 dogs, but 200 canines were discovered at her residence. It was reported that agents arrived to the property at 6am.”

200?
Obligatory.
Animal hoarders are such sad stories. It always starts with good intentions and turns into a disaster.
We adopted a senior dog that came out of a hording situation in California. Great little guy, but had some serious issues.
Absolutely broke our hearts when he passed.
It seems like I have been hearing what a mess she is all my life. Sad.
Fun fact- the Rick James son “cold blooded” was written about her.
Seems he got her pregnant and she aborted the kid w/o telling him until after.

“From all-around support to tailored recruitment, a University of Nottingham initiative offers a blueprint for improving neuro-inclusion in the technical workforce”
Uh… Hate to break it to you, but the technical workforce is already full of autists. Are they trying to recruit normal people?
Or more autists but of the kind who don’t shut up about it.

Yes, let’s have more coercive mainstreaming.
I don’t see what could go wrong.

Electricity comes from the wall
“I joined hundreds of landowners who waited all day to testify at the Capitol. Multigenerational landowners and new property owners alike delivered the same message: These lines are misguided, the routing options are poor, and they threaten Texas and our way of life,” said Jada Jo Smith, founder and president of Hill Country Preservation Coalition, a group consisting of landowners whose property is in the route the lines would cross. “We hope the PUC heeds the concerns of the Legislature and thousands of Texas landowners by denying the current applications.”
What are the alternatives?
Maybe instead of using government to take the land for a one time payment from landowners and a permanent right of way for the power lines they can do a 99 year lease that pays property owners annually. Like the market does for cell towers.
“When the superstar academic Jason Arday took to the stage at the British Sociological Association’s 75th anniversary conference earlier this year, he delivered a talk called Wanted Dead or Alive: the Playbook.
The youngest black professor in Cambridge University’s history told an audience of his peers that the playbook in question had helped bring down some of the biggest names in US academia. Conservative “activists” were trawling through the work of black academics, looking for anything to use against them: inconsistencies, citation errors, passages in their work that were similar to existing papers….
Then last week a row erupted concerning Arday’s academic work. The Telegraph reported that analysis had found more than 100 passages in his PhD were similar to another thesis by Paula Zwozdiak-Myers, a student at Brunel University in London, published six years earlier.”

I had to tap out from all the eye rolling.
“Before leaving office, Biden preemptively pardoned Fauci — and for good reason. The doctor had become the whipping boy of the MAGA right, commonly accused of personally creating Covid-19 (in cahoots with Chinese communists, naturally) and then making a vaccine that they insist killed more people than the virus. It’s all nonsense, of course. There are still debates about the origins of the virus, but the idea that Fauci created or enabled it in some way is ridiculous….”

All he did was send the Wuhan lab money to allowed programs which allowed the Chinese to reallocate money to disallowed programs. Yeah, totally blameless but I don’t expect the retards at Salon to grasp the concept of the fungibility of money.
Party of hate and fear
“The math is inescapable. If it’s impossible for a Democrat to win, it is vital that the Democrats step aside and give the independent at least a shot of beating the Republican,” said Matt Bennett, a co-founder of the centrist Democratic think tank Third Way. “Beating the MAGA Republicans is priorities one, two and three. Who we beat them with is pretty far down the list.”
Republican bad. That’s everything you need to know.
“Centrist”
Like Kathy Hochul was portrayed?
Yeah pull the other one.
Third Way sounds Mussoliniesque.
