Monday Afternoon Links

Hurrah for Monday?

OK, maybe not hurrah, but at least I can get some things done this week. In 3 weeks, I am heading to the Netherlands, to scatter some of Dad’s ashes at the University of Amsterdam Medical College. 1951-1953 there, he got his start into what would end up being a magnificent career in medicine. Let us just say the EU is a mess to deal with for travel (not terrible, but things keep starting and stopping – do this … wait you cannot do this!) and I am waiting to hear back from the University Board on my request.

Fortunately, I won’t miss Links, as we will have our traditional Labor Day open post on the 7th.

So, to the Links;

  • Sure. I am sure you have said the same to the CCP, right?
  • Hey?! I think this will have passed before I get there.
  • I guess this is one way to end a political feud.
  • It wasn’t me. I suspect Mexican Sharpshooter – he has great taste in watches.

Music – something Dutch.

Comments are open and all yours.

      Bacon and Swiss together.

      That sounds tasty

Safe travels. Condolences about your father. Hopefully the University Board approves your request. I think it is a good thing.

    • UnCivilServant

If they don’t – replace the university board.

      • Ted S.

        Or scatter the ashes surreptitiously.

    • R C Dean

I am not planning to ask for permission to scatter Pater Dean’s ashes when the time comes.

We learned the hard way not to dump great aunt out the window of the 182.

A bunch of her got vacuumed up from the interior after my dad got home.

  3. JaimeRoberto feckful & gruntled

Were there any hoops you needed to jump through to transport the ashes to a different country?

I considered taking my parents’ ashes to Hawaii where they met but didn’t want to risk any trouble so instead we are driving them up to the San Juan Islands next month.

    • UnCivilServant

Depends – will they false positive on field drug tests?

      • JaimeRoberto feckful & gruntled

Carrying large bags of white powder seemed like a bad idea to me.

  4. Fourscore

I was there about 5 years after your Dad, Swissie.

I got my education on Canal Street though. A couple days and I really learned a lot for a 20 year old.

From there to Copenhagen for more training.

“WASHINGTON — Secretary of War Pete Hegseth led tributes Monday to the late Sen. Lindsey Graham as the largest military base in his home state of South Carolina was renamed in honor of the longtime lawmaker.”

I legitimately first misread that last bit as “longtime warmonger”…Ha!

        I blame alcohol.

Long day so Im just now catching up. But Ill drag this up from the AM lynx:

Trying to convey that I really am ill and you joke about my phone number? Tres, I hope you and Y B have tall cans in hell.

See youse around maybe if this MLW doesnt circle the drain.

So now Im the sub-plot in in this bit of melodrama? Who cant appreciate a Winston’s Mom joke?

    • Michael Malaise

With Toxeth the name does not lie.

      • Threedoor

        Wicked burn.

I am waiting to hear back from the University Board on my request.

You can surreptitiously release the ashes from the cuff of your trousers.

    • Michael Malaise

Then there is also the old “trip and fall”

  7. Chipping Pioneer

I’m sorry. I know I’ve asked this before. Honey Harvest is 3rd Sunday in September. What town is it in? Wife and I are going to visit wife’s parents in Winnipeg in September. Seeing if I can make it work.

    • Chipping Pioneer

Also, what does one say to USCBP when visiting Glibertarians?

Oh, I’m going to meet some people from online who connected over feeding a federal prosecutor into a woodchipper.

Maybe Pie can provide input. They invited him in, after all.

      • Threedoor

When I went to Canada last year when the MP looking border gal asked me if I had any gifts I looked her straight in the eye and loed. Nope. That disassembled merry go round in the back of my pickup is not a gift and I’m hauling it into Canada for no reason.

      • Ted S.

I hate it when people loe to me.

    • Fourscore

Chip, Emily, Mn but south of town a couple miles. North Central, MN. Hope you can make, meet more Glibs

    Peasant revolt

An Alaska Airlines flight bound for Seattle was delayed nearly two hours Sunday evening after passengers allegedly threatened flight attendants while the plane was taxiing, triggering an emergency cockpit lockdown and prompting a response from law enforcement, according to air traffic control audio and officials.

Alaska Airlines Flight 305 had pushed back from the gate at Miami International Airport when the pilot set the parking brake and shut down the engines, air traffic control audio provided by ATC.com and reviewed by CNN shows.

“We have a customer disturbance on board right now, with threats coming from customers,” the pilot told controllers. “We want to go into a lockdown protocol.”

A controller asked if the crew needed law enforcement. “Absolutely,” the pilot responded. The controller directed the plane to return to the gate with law enforcement standing by.

No mention of the alleged complaint.

    • Threedoor

Fly the friendly skies my ass.

  9. ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Sigh. Today our counter offer was accepted on our old rental unit, and we also found unknown amounts of water damage above the garage.

    Fuck my life.

    • Threedoor

Slap some kilz on it and forget it.

    GlibsCruise Day Three:

Day two was in the northern port city of Grundarfjörður. Our excursion got cancelled, so we just tendered in and walked around town. Even got a photo op with our mascot. (BTW, has anyone ever named our Glib fella?)

Today was another remote northwestern city called Ísafjörður. Took a small launch from the cruise ship to the dock (the wife and I really enjoy those tender moments), then a tour to a collection of waterfalls known as Dynjandi. The landscape is incredible — a mix of Hawaiian geology and Alaskan ground cover.

I asked the missus how she liked the glacial inlets of Iceland in comparison to Scotland. She didn’t really have an answer, even though this wasn’t her firth rodeo.

After leaving the port, we briefly crossed the Arctic Circle. I thought it was kinda neat, the wife was definitely whelmed. Over- or under-, I’m not sure. I’ve taken her across the Prime Meridian, the International Date Line, and the Tropic of Cancer. Next up is the equator.

The weather has been gorgeous the last two days. As we left the port, it turned back to the usual. Iceland is eight months of winter with overcast skies and snow, followed by a few weeks of summer punctuated by overcast skies and rain drizzles. We’ll see how that works for eclipse day.

Will continue dispatching as time allows…

Oooh! The hat’s button is perfectly holding up the horizon!

      “Glib Fella Shrugged”

      Next up is the equator.

As long as you’ve been married, I would have thunk you’d been south of the equator with the wife several times already. Never too late to start I suppose!

    • Aloysious

I think of our mascot as either Glib-dude or Toff Smith, the erudite and refined Smith bro.

    • Threedoor

      Fantastic.

  11. Evan from Evansville

Some Dutch music and it isn’t — oh. It is Radar Love. I suppose -1 for a novel approach, but +Everything Else for the ‘What a fucking perfect song’ angle. It’s just… so good. Top Gear is correct to include it in their Best Driving Songs list. “Don’t Stop Me Now” I think won. And/ cuz uh. Damn. Also perfect. (Highway Star also deserved to be there, IMO, but far weaker song. And band I don’t know as much as I should about.)

Personal fave driving song? Well, The Killers’ first album Hot Fuss is fucking spectacular, came out junior year in high school. “Midnight Show” is a fucking banger. Damn. Fast, good, simple but complicated rock song directly about driving dangerously? Yes’m. I don’t like /know as much of them as I should, but Brandon Flowers can sing and that first album is triumphant. Dammit. I’d rank it above Turn on the Bright Lights, discussed here, recently. Those high school girls were absolutely correct to fawn over him. (Flowers is distinctly on my Jealous List. So’s the lead singer /guitarist for Muse. Don’t be talented *and* ‘handsome.’ No good for me.)

Off impulse, which is likely to be correct in this instance, Midnight Show would count as *my* favorite driving song, with all the history and interpersonal memories attached. Driving songs kinda gotta be from when you were that age.

    • rhywun

Driving songs kinda gotta be from when you were that age.

Like this one. The whole album, really.

      • Evan from Evansville

Our age difference shows. I only know of them. However! Nouvelle Vague’s bossa Nova jazz cover of Just Can’t Get Enough, uh. That whole (Nouvelle Vague) album is my highschool sweetheart album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcljHWUqLVA

Was looking up what song they covered, cuz I knew they did but couldn’t remember which was Depeche Mode’s. And apparently… Nouvelle Vague just recorded a whole “A Date with Depeche Mode” tribute album, comes out in Oct. Huh.

      • Michael Malaise

Violator is another all killer no filler selection. Personal Jesus is actually one of the weaker songs of the set.

      • Tres Cool

Ya know that all their songs are about heroin, right?
        Same with Guns & Roses.

    • Michael Malaise

Hot Fuss is all killer, no filler.

      • Evan from Evansville

*badoom* (And you’re correct. Jenny Was a Friend of Mine may be my favorite, starting the album. Really good bass line, a rare compliment given to such, and deserved from this drummer.)

      • Ted S.

You wish that you had Jenny’s Girl?

    • Threedoor

I have the extended Hot Fuss.
      It is a fantastic album.

    • rhywun

As compensation for their labours men are given periodic use of a woman’s vagina.

      legit lol

    • DEG

      Huh. Interesting.

I received a copy of “The Camp of the Saints” today. I’ll work it into my unread book pile.

    • Michael Malaise

Is the introduction from Camille Paglia?

  12. DEG

How much do you see wrong?

    • UnCivilServant

I give up. I’m not going to keep enumerating.

    • Sean

      I want an SVT.

      • Threedoor

        I had a 2014 Raptor SVT.
        It was sweet.
