IFLA: The “Road work 4” Edition of the Horoscope for the week of August 23

by | Aug 23, 2026 | IFLA | 70 comments

Finally! The last road work column. I’ll have another one of these next month, and maybe one in October when the lady friend comes to visit but otherwise it will be good to be home. When this publishes I should know whether or not I’m done with burning money and vacation time in order to sit in a golf cart with some observing exactly how well I sit in a golf cart.

The week starts off with a change in leadership. Thursday through Saturday will be unstable days at home, but you can use that if you need to make some changes. Wednesday is an extremely lucky day for Scorpio. Anything bad that happens to you then really is your own fault.

Virgo: The Sun reversed – Material happiness, fortunate marriage, contentment.

Libra: Queen of Wands reversed – Opposition, jealousy, deceit.

Scorpio: The Magician – Skill, diplomacy, address, subtlety; sickness, pain, loss, disaster, snares of enemies; self-confidence, will.

Sagittarius: 4 of Swords reversed – Wise administration, circumspection, economy, avarice, precaution, testament.

Capricorn: 7 of Wands – Valor, discussion, negotiations, war of trade, barter, competition, success.

Aquarius: 3 of Coins – Métier, trade, skilled labor, renown, glory.

Pisces: King of Cups – Man of business, law, or divinity; responsible, also equity, art and science, including those who profess science, law and art.

Aries: The World reversed – Inertia, fixity, stagnation, permanence.

Taurus: Ace of Wands – Creation, invention, enterprise, principle, beginning, source, birth, family, origin, virility.

Gemini: 10 of Swords – Pain, affliction, tears, sadness, desolation.

Cancer: Queen of Cups reversed – Good, fair woman; honest, devoted woman; loving intelligence, the gift of vision; success, happiness, pleasure; also wisdom, virtue; a perfect spouse and a good mother.

Leo: Justice reversed – Legal complications, bigotry, bias, excessive severity.

So, I asked AI for a sauce that uses the soy sauce, rice vinegar, fish sauce, and curry powder I picked up yesterday. It editorialized too much, and stole an answer from somewhere on the internet, so I assume it came from a human, since it was too coherent for the machine.

You can make a **sugar-free Thai-style curry soy dipping sauce**—salty, tangy, spicy, and rich in umami.

    **Ingredients**

    – 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari
    – 1 tablespoon fish sauce
    – 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
    – ½ teaspoon yellow curry powder
    – 1 tablespoon neutral oil or toasted sesame oil
    – ½ teaspoon grated ginger
    – ½ clove finely grated garlic, optional
    – Chili flakes or cayenne, to taste
    – Black pepper, to taste
    – 1–2 tablespoons water
    – Optional: a squeeze of lime juice, sesame seeds, or chopped cilantro

    **Method**

Whisk everything together. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes so the curry, ginger, and garlic infuse. Taste and adjust:

    – Too salty: add water or lime juice.
    – Too sharp: add a little more oil or water.
    – Too mild: add curry powder, chili, or black pepper.
    – Too thin: simmer gently for a few minutes to reduce; don’t use flour or cornstarch.

It works as a dipping sauce for meat, fish, eggs, tofu, or low-carb vegetables, and as a marinade for chicken or shrimp. For a creamier version, whisk in 1–2 tablespoons of unsweetened coconut cream, though coconut cream adds a small amount of carbohydrate.

I decided to give it a chance and am marinading some chicken wings in it.

    • cyto

      Sounds good.
Allrecipies is really good, and I find that AI is expert in navigating reddit to find stuff there.

I made a panang curry based on a similar response that was almost as good as my favorite restaurant.

I wish I had known how easy Thai food is when you have the right ingredients years ago. I had a friend teach me his spicy basil a few years ago and it opened my eyes. His used wide noodles, which i have never seen, but it was fantastic. I became addicted to black soy sauce after that.

I had a new version of Pad Thai Friday night that featured Tamarind. Odd choice, but fantastic. Now I have to figure that one out for home.

      • UnCivilServant

        So, the experimental results.

I used crushed red chili flakes and toasted sesame oil. I did not use any of the optional ingredients (I didn’t have any. there was garlic powder but not fresh).

I marinated six wings for ninety minutes and baked at 350 for 35 minutes. The mariade gave the chicken a gorgeous color when it came out of the oven, and I wasn’t able to stop eating before I finished them.

Wish I knew what human gets the credit for The AI Chicken.

Oh, and I added 1/4 teaspoon MSG. Not sure how much impact that had.

What the hell is ‘not black’ soy sauce? Sounds like white sauce supremacy.

    Glibertarians.com Daily (AI) Horoscope

(For regular posters only. The rest of you can go argue about NAP violations in the Discord.)

    Old Man With Candy

The stars say today is a good day to drop another “wrong book” biblical zinger and then watch the comments explode with people who still think you’re serious. Mars is in your house of candy, which means the urge to post about sugar, physics homework problems from 1987, and local election drinking will be strong. Resist the urge to explain quantum mechanics to anyone under 50. They won’t get it, and you’ll just end up typing more. Lucky number: whatever the blood alcohol content of your morning coffee is.

    SugarFree

Mercury is retrograde in your sign of “I already know how this ends and it’s worse than you think.” Expect an unusually high volume of dark, twisted one-liners that make even the long-timers pause mid-scroll. Someone will try to one-up you. They will fail. Do not, under any circumstances, accept a bet involving chapo trap house or Virginia Postrel. The universe is not that kind.

    R C Dean

Saturn demands precision today. You will spot the exact legal or bureaucratic flaw in whatever dumb policy is being linked and state it with the calm finality of a man who has already won the argument in his head three times. Someone will still argue. Ignore them. Your lucky activity: explaining why the licensing center needs a hard look from a prosecutor.

    Ted S.

Venus is flirting with your chart, which means you will post something dry, understated, and quietly devastating. Half the thread will miss it on the first pass. The other half will quote it for the next three days. Avoid any discussion of Milton Berle stories; the alignment is unstable.

    ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Your ruling planet is currently doing donuts in the parking lot of the amygdala. Today is excellent for declaring things “sweet Terra Cotta cafe and Den of Iniquity” energy. Science will be invoked. Whether it is real science is secondary. Someone will ask for a citation. Laugh.

    AlexinCT

Mars is loud in your house of “Where the white women at?” Expect at least one exchange that starts as a joke and ends with someone getting genuinely annoyed while you remain cheerfully unbothered. The stars advise against escalating past the third reply. You won’t listen. That’s fine. It’s your brand.

    (((Jarflax

The cosmic forces are aligned for maximal lamp-post decoration metaphors and deep-state skepticism. Someone will call you extreme. You will reply with something even more extreme delivered in a calm, almost clinical tone. This is correct. Do not dilute it.

    UnCivilServant

Mercury says today is not for serious discussion, which is perfect because you already asked the question first. Expect to derail at least one earnest thread with pure chaos energy. Your lucky phrase: “What if I don’t come here for serious discussion?”

    Not Adahn

The weekend residual energy is still strong. You will recommend a brewery (Ommegang again?) and someone will actually take the advice. This is rare. Treasure it. Also, someone will misread your tone. Let them.

    Banjos / sloopyinca

Domestic chaos and parental exhaustion are both highly aspected. The morning links will write themselves, but the real work is surviving the three bright, curious, highly active forces of nature in your house. Coffee is not optional. Neither is the occasional “perpetually exhausted” sigh in the comments.

Tres Cool / Common Tater / Rat on a train

The lesser luminaries are active. Expect early-morning “whaddup doh’” energy, potato-based wordplay, and at least one revelation that would be a crime against humanity if fully spelled out. Stay hydrated. The thread is long.

Everyone else who shows up every single day

The universe sees you. It is mildly amused. Post anyway. The Gulch doesn’t run itself.
Forecast for the rest of the week: same as always, only more so. Taxation remains theft. The comments will be worse. Carry on

    • dbleagle

      Bravo cyto! Well played.

      • R C Dean

You will spot the exact legal or bureaucratic flaw in whatever dumb policy is being linked and state it with the calm finality of a man who has already won the argument in his head three times. Someone will still argue. Ignore them.

I actually built a moderately successful career on pretty much that.

    • UnCivilServant

Question – where do people go for serious discussion?

      • DEG

These days? Probably best to get some friends together and meet in person for a serious discussion.

      • cyto

That is a good question. I have noticed that argument has made a bit of a comeback here.

TOS is bereft since we left. I very, very occasionally have something to say when they post on X, either decisive or encouraging.

Everything for me beyond that is very local. Mostly church friends who are mostly more conservatives than libertarian. I am their kooky friend with wacky alternative views.

I have yet to find a forum where a discussion with anyone modestly of the left can be had with reasonable back and forth.

Worse, everything os a cult of personality. Trump is uniquely evil. Or, did you see what they said about Trump?

“That one guy” is of limited interest to me. And Trump, having no underlying philosophy, is of no consequence beyond his concrete actions today. There cannot be a future movement based on his policies, because the only thread running through them is that he personally thinks they are for the best, whatever the reason might be.

    • DEG

      Not sufficiently shitty.

argue about NAP violations in the Discord

Glibs discord or some other discord? Because there are no discussions of NAP over on glibs discord.

      • cyto

This was the entire prompt. No further context provided

“Write a realistic horoscope specific to the usernames of regular posters at glibertarians.com”

I found the NAP and Postrel references particularly archaic. Which is interesting. They show a deeper subtext to *who* we are, beyond anything posted here in the last few years.

      • DEG

The LLM wrote all that with just that prompt? On a serious note, it did a great job in some places.

I can’t remember the last time anyone here talked about NAP or Postrel.

    Wise administration- that’s a laugh.

The past few weeks I have been rewatching Battlestar Galactica on Pluto.TV.

I dont think I ever did a full rematch before. It really holds up. The writing is better than I remember, and the anti Iraq war season was not nearly as bad as I had remembered. Removed from context, it works much better, even though many decision the characters made in order to have events occur for the story are still incongruous.

I remember much scorn and derision being heaped upon the ending. At the time, I didnt think it was too bad. I remember my impression being that it was a little tacked-on, just to provide the “oooh, sci fi” twist ending with a nod to the original.

But on second watch, decades later? I really like the ending too. They played into several ideas that were banging around at the time, like Intelligent Design, cults, discoveries about the origins of man, the nature of evil, choosing what kind of person you want to be….. lots of standard sci-fi topics were at least referenced. And nicely left open to quite a bit of interpretation and disagreement…. which makes for good sci-fi.

As a 20 year old sci fi series, it might be even better today – with themes of artificial intelligence breaking free from human masters and having differing forms of morality – yet having human failings built right into their programming because they were built by humans….

If sci-fi is your thing and you’ve never seen it, it is worth your time. And while it is on Pluto.TV, you cant beat the price.

    • rhywun

I thought I saw that pop up on Pluto recently. I have all the DVDs but I often prefer not to fiddle with discs if I don’t have to.

I saw the whole thing when it aired. I think I rewatched the entire series only once a long time ago. I’ve started over several times but always get distracted. But it really is a classic. Not much of similar quality has come along – The Expanse, nothing else I can think of.

And yes, I disagreed with all the complaints around the ending.

    • Sean

I love that show. Did a partial to mostly rewatch while it’s on Pluto.

      Absolutely holds up.

Still watching all the Stargate iterations too.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

I hate that show with the fires of 1000 suns. Not because of the show, per se, but because my wife had on repeat for about 3 years. I am not a tv as background person, so I cannot tune it out, and was forced to watch what seems like the same three episodes on repeat for eternity.

**Here’s a fresh batch of realistic, snarky, community-style horoscopes for recent/active Glibs commenters who weren’t in the earlier round.**

    **DEG**
Mercury is retrograde in your “I already knew that and said it three comments ago” house. Today you will correctly identify the flaw in someone’s argument before they finish typing, only for the thread to ignore you and argue about the picture of the waitress instead. Lucky numbers: the exact number of times you’ve had to explain the same basic economic point this month. Avoid: any post that begins with “I don’t usually comment but…”

    **Pope Jimbo**
The stars align for maximum dad-joke deployment and bar-story escalation. You will drop a perfectly timed one-liner that makes half the thread snort coffee and the other half pretend they don’t get it. Venus is conjunct your “another round?” sector—someone will buy the next metaphorical round. Warning: do not let the conversation drift into actual politics before noon or the whole thing collapses into serious discussion, and nobody wants that on a Sunday.

    **rhywun**
Your chart shows a strong “New York is still a dump and everyone knows it” transit. Expect to drop a dry, devastating observation about urban governance, minimum wages, or delivery apps that lands harder than intended. The universe rewards your consistency: the same problems you flagged years ago are somehow worse. Lucky color: the gray of a stalled subway. Avoid: any article that claims the city is “coming back.”

    **PieInTheSky**
Jupiter is in your “proper England is north of this” house. You will once again be the voice of geographic and cultural correctness while the rest of the thread mangles British place names and history. Someone will ask a question you already answered last week; respond with the same patient exasperation. Cosmic advice: keep the snark dry. The wetter it gets, the more American it becomes.

    **Threedoor**
Mars is active in your “I was going to, but then I saw the comments” sector. Today you will start typing a thoughtful reply, see the direction the thread is taking, and wisely abort. Or you won’t, and the resulting post will be peak Glib. Either way, the stars say your restraint (or lack thereof) is noticed. Lucky activity: scrolling past the 47th “where the white womenz at” variant without engaging.

    **Ownbestenemy**
Saturn rewards long-term observers. You will quietly note something everyone else missed in the links, drop it without fanfare, and watch the smarter half of the thread quietly upvote while the rest keeps arguing about the football photo. Your ruling planet is currently conjunct “I told you so but I’m too polite to say it out loud.” Keep being the adult in the room; the children need the contrast.

    **Sensei**
The Moon is in your “nice…” house. Expect to deliver the perfect one-word (or one-emoji) reaction that somehow says more than the three-paragraph effort above it. Your chart favors understatement and timing. Cosmic hazard: if you expand beyond two sentences, the thread will demand a full lecture and you will be forced to provide one. Resist.

    **The Last American Hero**
Neptune is fogging the “Elon will save us / Elon is the problem” axis again. You will correctly predict that the next big tech promise will under-deliver in a spectacularly American way, and someone will still argue with you about Mars colonies. Lucky number: the exact number of years until the promised timeline slips again. Avoid: any post that treats a press release as a done deal.

    **SarumanTheWoefullyIgnorant**
Your name is currently in strong aspect with “actually I do know a few things.” Today you will drop a historical or institutional detail that quietly wrecks someone’s narrative, then watch them pretend it didn’t happen. The stars favor the long game: keep the knowledge ready, deploy sparingly, and let the thread do the rest of the work. Bonus points if it involves federal agencies or force turnover ratios.

    **Tonio**
Venus is in your “welcome back, now do the links” sector. Expect to be the reliable first (or early) voice of appreciation when someone steps up, followed by a clean, useful observation. The universe likes your low-drama consistency. Cosmic advice: stay in that lane. The high-drama lanes are already overcrowded and full of potholes.

    **slumbrew**
Mercury is sharp in your “you’ll need to be more specific” house. Someone will post a vague complaint; you will demand precision; the resulting clarification will be more entertaining than the original post. Lucky tool: the reply button. Use it early and often. Avoid: accepting “this is getting tiring” as a complete thought.

    **ron73440**
Jupiter expands your “historic amount of historic agreements” skepticism. You will correctly note that the latest grand announcement is the 47th of its kind and still manage to make it funny instead of just bitter. The stars reward pattern recognition laced with gallows humor. Keep counting; the rest of us need the tally.

    **juris imprudent**
Saturn is in your “should’ve been up a couple of decades ago” house. Expect to deliver the cold, accurate assessment of someone’s political shelf life that everyone else is too polite (or too entertained) to say. Your chart favors the long view and the short sentence. Deploy both.

    **CatchTheCarp**
The Moon is conjunct personal history. Someone will mention a medical or family detail and you will quietly add the real-world data point that grounds the whole conversation. The stars appreciate the unvarnished contribution. Lucky activity: being the guy who actually knows because he’s lived it.

A few more who keep circulating in the recent threads (Spudalicious, mexican sharpshooter, Mojeaux, Swiss Servator, Brett L when he surfaces, Grummun, Chafed, Sean, etc.) are orbiting the same chaotic, low-stakes energy: the links will be late or early, the football photo will generate more comments than the actual news, and someone will still ask where the white womenz are. The cosmic constant remains: the comments are the real product, the posts are just the excuse, and nobody here is getting out clean.

Stay frosty, Glibs. The road work continues.

I tried the same thing using Google Gemini.

It understood a completely different assignment.

    Aries (March 21 – April 19)

The Ruling: Planetary alignment in your sector of debate suggests an impending, high-intensity comment chain about monetary policy.

The Forecast: Your urge to aggressively point out basic supply-and-demand curves to an internet stranger will reach an all-time high this week. Before typing a 1,200-word dissertation on the gold standard, pause and breathe.

Lucky Item: A heavily annotated copy of Road to Serfdom.

    Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

The Ruling: Saturn’s slow transit demands patience, particularly regarding local zoning board decisions.

The Forecast: Unreasonable property restrictions and bureaucratic HOA emails will test your unshakeable resolve. Resist the urge to declare your suburban lot a sovereign principality. Instead, channel that stubborn energy into curating a masterclass blog post dissecting tax inefficiencies.

Lucky Item: A private property sign with bold, unflinching lettering.

    Gemini (May 21 – June 20)

The Ruling: Mercury’s position triggers double the normal output in your drafting queue.

The Forecast: You have four different tabs open—two draft articles, an archive of 19th-century economic essays, and a lively thread on regulatory overreach. You’ll manage to synthesize all of them into a single, razor-sharp commentary piece before lunch.

Lucky Item: A dual-monitor desktop setup.
    Cancer (June 21 – July 22)
The Ruling: The Moon illuminates your core domain: self-reliance and domestic tranquility.

The Forecast: Nostalgia for simpler times or historical governance models will hit hard mid-week. You’ll find immense comfort in prepping, organizing your workshop, or optimizing your home layout for ultimate efficiency without outside interference.
Lucky Item: A cast-iron skillet that will outlive the federal reserve.

    Leo (July 23 – August 22)

The Ruling: The Sun shines brightly on your rhetorical authority.

The Forecast: You are set to deliver the definitive top-comment dunk on a particularly flawed piece of bad economic journalism. Your sharp wit and uncompromising logic will earn top upvotes and verbal nods of respect across the site. Use your star power wisely.

Lucky Item: A signature avatar image that commands instant respect.

    Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

The Ruling: Precise, analytical energy dominates your chart as a new dataset crosses your screen.

The Forecast: Someone on the internet is technically wrong about historical GDP figures or spending projections, and you are the only one equipped to fix it. Your meticulous redlining of bad math will save the day, even if the offender refuses to acknowledge it.

Lucky Item: A perfectly formatted, error-free spreadsheet.

    Libra (September 23 – October 22)

The Ruling: Venus calls for balance, though the comment section promises anything but.

The Forecast: You’ll play the rare role of peacemaker during an intense internal debate over minor philosophical nuances. You know that both sides actually agree on 95% of the policy, so bring the room back to the core principles with calm, devastating logic.
Lucky Item: A well-timed, understatedly funny meme.

    Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

The Ruling: Pluto encourages deep digging into hidden fine print and opaque regulations.

The Forecast: You’ll spot the obscure tax clause or government spending loophole that everyone else missed. Your deep dive into municipal spending receipts will yield a dark, humorous epiphany about bureaucrat logic.

    Lucky Item: Encrypted communication tools.

    Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

The Ruling: Jupiter expands your horizons and sharpens your philosophical broadsides.

The Forecast: You’re in no mood for small talk or incremental policy tweaks; you want total, unvarnished intellectual freedom. Expect a sudden burst of inspiration to draft a broad, overarching essay on personal liberty that leaves no sacred cows intact.

Lucky Item: A dog-eared, bookmark-filled classic essay collection.

    Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

The Ruling: Rigid Saturn urges pragmatic application over theoretical idealism.

The Forecast: While others are debating abstract political theory, you’re focused on practical outcomes, cash flow, and real-world execution. Your comment cutting through ideological fluff with plain, hard-nosed common sense will end a debate instantly.

Lucky Item: A ledger book or budget summary that actually balances.

    Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

The Ruling: Uranus brings unconventional insights and counter-trend hot takes.

The Forecast: You’re three steps ahead of the mainstream narrative, seeing the unintended consequences of a new regulation long before the media catches on. Post your analysis early—the crowd will catch up to your foresight by next month.

Lucky Item: An obscure historical precedent no one else remembers.

    Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

The Ruling: Neptune encourages quiet reflection away from the digital noise.

The Forecast: The news cycle will feel extra absurd this week. Rather than engaging every hot-head in the comment feed, take a step back, enjoy a quiet beverage, and write a dryly ironic summary of the madness instead.

The Independent Republic of FAFO would exist if Californians hadn’t driven up Idaho land prices!

Screw CA and the west side.
