Much controversy and action this week in the Gulch. There’s been an ongoing debate about allowing short term rentals (e.g., AirBnB, VRBO…) to exist in the rarified areas zoned Residential. “We need to preserve the character of our neighborhoods and these things are likely to end up as party houses for college kids,” goes the “anti” side. “We need to make it easy for people to come here and spend money, and our taxes are so ridiculous that we need to let people get some extra income to pay them,” goes the “pro” side. You can guess which one I’m on. Anyway, various people from the community, the businesses, and owners of STRs spoke and argued. And as usual, the can was kicked down the contentious road.
But the nice thing about being in a tiny village like the Gulch is that things develop spontaneously, and analogous to Smith’s Invisible Hand, we have an Invisible Liver. As I walked back to my car, my phone rang, it was one of the business owners asking if our cafe was open. “It’s not, but what were you looking for, maybe I can do something…?” “The bar is closed, can I get a glass of wine?” “Of course.”
One of the participants toddled off for a couple minutes, then returned with a grocery bag full of assorted potato chips and other similar snacks. “Could you recommend a wine to go with Fritos?” The Invisible Liver kicked in, and within minutes, there were seven of us, and likewise within minutes, there were five bottles open. Two hours later, there were eight empty bottles and seven unsteady village residents.
Birthdays today include a guy of foggy origins; a woman that Oliver Wendell Holmes approved of; the guy who started the masking craze; a guy who would have hated my students; a guy who always made you wonder wtf he was doing there; a guy who blew a mean horn; a guy who exemplified the ethics of the legal profession; a wolf I got to see close up and personal in a surprise appearance at a coffeehouse; the second best thing in homicide; the queen of crappy burgers; and proof that affirmative action doesn’t result in mediocr… oh, wait.
Links might also be mediocre.
I wish US elections were more like this.
So did his son Justin come down for the party?
The Grauniad’s obsessions often cross the line to sheer comedy.
Had you considered that she was actively unpleasant and bug-nuts?
“Was that wrong? Was I not supposed to do that?”
This comes as no surprise to anyone who saw Superman and the Mole Men.
This comes as no surprise to anyone who saw Star Trek TOS.
In local news, they don’t send us their best.
And if you believe this, you’ll believe anything. Not that this would make any real difference…
This is such a no-brainer that of course there’s controversy.
This is so untypical of Matt- he generally does loud one-man band with slide guitar, home-made percussion, and Tuvan throat singing. This is gentle, folksy, and absolutely deadly on-target. I love it.

“Had you considered that she was actively unpleasant and bug-nuts?”
She kept saying the crazy shit out loud and sounded insincere when taking it back?
Bot ate my comment goddammit.
TL;DR – that pile of shit article tries valiantly to hand-wave away the fact DSA losers are no-shit communists – just read their fucking platform.
Face it, she did connect with a substantial part of the electorate. Our problem isn’t nutty politicians – it is the people that vote for them. That’s going to be a real challenge to fix.
“Face it, she did connect with a substantial part of the electorate”
What you are really saying there is that we have a serious and large number of batshit crazy morons in our society, and nature will find a way to deal with it. If it is not famine anymore, it will be war, pestilence (by Fauci types), or a rock from space/super volcano. Now I am worried.
Cascadia subduction zone Alex.
I don’t think they’re crazy – just hateful and envious. The commies are promising them free shit and people like free shit and vote accordingly – that’s all it is.
No, a lot of them are genuinely crazy. Not like barking at the moon or cutting up hookers crazy, but there’s a significant cohort of modern Americans who have real trouble distinguishing between fantasy and reality.
Yellowstone Caldera, Alex
Nature is fairly indiscriminate in its corrections Alex. The fact that something around a third of our nation has embraced a philosophy of active hostility toward the nation, and another third or more is apathetic, says bad things about our future. Yes, The Gods of the Copybook Headings will return with terror and slaughter for the foolish, but they don’t discriminate once unleashed.
Agreed.
“Nature is fairly indiscriminate in its corrections Alex”
So that story I heard about the big rock from space coming down on us because the Licallotapus, a sub genus of the Velociraptor, got all uppity and nuts is not a thing?
but they don’t discriminate once unleashed.
Such will weed out those with poor survival instincts, and that will be pretty disproportionate.
@ES – fortunately they self-identify in public with hair colors, bumper stickers and those crazy lawn signs. You know, like the ones in my neighborhood that say “Talarico”.
Such will weed out those with poor survival instincts
and plenty of others as well. It’s all very well to have a food stockpile when the famines hit, but it also makes you a target of the very assholes who caused the famine. It’s hard to be prepared for all the horrors the collapse of a civilization brings.
There was a fun reality show a long time ago which LARPed that exact situation. One season they played it out in some abandoned acres of New Orleans. No food, use what materials you can find, marauding barbarians, etc.
and plenty of others as well
I don’t imagine I would survive, not sure I’d even care to try at my age. But I think I can take out some of the dumbfucks before I go.
That’s about my attitude as well.

So what wine did you recommend for the Fritos?
Mad Dog 20/20?
Nah, MD goes with cocktail wieners out of the can. For Fritos, I suggest Boone’s Farm Strawberry Hill.
Rumpleminze is for Vienna sausages. That way your breath smells ok after you eat them and stays ok after you vomit from eating them.
Who are you, so wise in the ways of the hobo diet?

I love Air BnB. Half the price of a hotel or less, usually close to my out-in-the-boonies shooting range, and sometimes the rooms are just fantastic, or at the very least fantastically weird.
Abnb seems to be as expensive or more than hotels where we want to stay.
And they always fuck you on the cleaning charges.
Give me an anonymous hotel room every time.
Memorable AirBnB’s
Quebec city, apartment directly on the Place du Champlain, in summer $150/night. Portable AC in bedroom only
Quebec city, dorm room next to Gare du Palais during winter carnival, $20/night.
Bumblefuck ME, Tiny house, $80 night. Toilet was a bucket of sawdust, but there was running water to shower with.
Portsmouth NH, the library of some giant old mansion, window AC, kind of a long walk to the bathroom but $120/night
I had typed out a long version of this but it died in a 403 error. I once ended up trying to break in someone’s condo in Destin at midnight after a 14 hour drive, because the Airbnb platform and ‘host’ hadn’t bothered to turn off the automatic booking for the unit when the owner sold the unit to an owner occupant 6 weeks before my booking.
Left unanswered, the most important question:

I assume you had a different recommendation for the potato chips since those have a cleaner oil/salt profile compared to the non-nixtamalized corn of the fritos?
Remember if they are not from the Estado de Fritos, they are just corn chips.

You know, I never actually put it together that the Alfred Bester character from Babylon 5 was a tribute to the writer of my favorite science fiction novel. Learn something new every day.
That character was well played by Chekov. I rarely though about his past role when he had a scene.
There were quite a few nods like that, as an example, Ellison was a consultant on the show. In at least one episode, you can see Ivanava reading a (non-existent) Ellison book titled Working Without a Net.
*sigh*
I, too, remember the days when sci-fi was made for the fans.
If Trump can get permanent DST I’ll be a fan forever.
Has there been any progress since last kerfuffle?
Looks like the same elderly curmudgeons are against it with the same whine “the kids will be walking up hill both ways to school in the dark!!”
So it’s arrested development cases v elderly curmudgeons?
I suspect nobody really wants to see us get away from the current time change setup. It’s just too easy a distraction for the rubes. Good way to chew up a few news cycles and all that.
I agree with whoever postulated that the reason they went with “permanent DST” rather than “permanent standard time” is that there was no intent to see it passed.

The Air B&B I stayed at in the gulch was great. Some dude up the hill with a mother in law suite (told me I could drink and drive and not worry in town). Also offered to pick us up if needed (he was drinking at the time).
I had no idea he was also in The Blasters and The Flesh Eaters. Opinion goes way up!
(and he lives an hour north of me, might run into him one day.)
That is… poor… advice.

Neph, i’m heading to a special night of Ska, punk, funk, and soul on sat. Pietasters, Hub City Stompers, and the Best of the Worst. It promises to be a fun cluster Fuxx. The band is playing at a outside brewery in the middle of nowhere with room for maybe 50 people. 120 tix have been sold.
Timeloose:
Have fun with that. I love the Pietasters, finally got the girlfriend to go see them a couple years back. Wound up chatting with Steve at the whiskey bar next to the venue before the show. Save Ferris is playing a small show here in Sunday, we may head to that.
I recently discovered those creamy horn notes I love on the album version of this song are created by a Chamberlin keyboard.
So…
Apparently there’s a push to issue letters of marque and reprisal, but for cybercrimes (which aren’t crimes when the government says it’s OK?)
I’m trying to figure out what the downside is (barring the obvious like “our” hackers cleaning out US citizens’ bank accounts rather than IRGC ones). I mean, yes the banking system would shit itself, but how much of this sort of thing is already happening without official recognition?

“Seventy-three percent of US adults surveyed were uncomfortable with “transgender athletes competing on sports teams that don’t match their sex at birth,” according to an analysis from Pew Research Center released on Tuesday….
Seventy-seven percent of men and 69% of women were against the idea of trans athletes competing with those born a different sex.”
https://nypost.com/2026/08/13/us-news/most-americans-dont-want-trans-athletes-on-sports-teams-that-dont-match-their-birth-sex/
Not surprised men want to protect women more than women do.
So 27% of US adults are A-OK with dudes in womanface beating up actual women?
Something tells me they haven’t thought this through.
It’s the same adults who would rather run into the bear in the woods than a man.
You know… morons and idiots.
I’ve run into a bear a number of times in the woods. All but one ran for their lives. The exception made off with my friend’s backpack (fortunately he was not wearing it at the time).
I’m going to guess Black Bears. It sounds like them.
The saxophone is not a “horn”, it’s in the woodwind category of instruments. Just sayin’ is all.
Most guitars aren’t actually axes either.
I realize that, but there are instruments properly classified as “horns”. The saxophone isn’t one of them.
Okay, Mr. Smartypants, where’s the wood (heh!) other than the reed?
It’s a half-breed* reed.
*Don’t you dare link to that song, Ted’S.!
(Excuse me. DR. Smartypants.)
The reed is what makes it a woodwind. Horned instruments don’t make use of reeds.
Where’s the wood on a piccolo?
explain flutes then.
You don’t want Ted to share a link?
Is this the song you didn’t want me to link to?
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3pYNd0MSVXs
That’s above my pay-grade. I only know about saxophones.
Skin flutes can have wood.
(Which is why I asked about the piccolo.)
LOL, I will enact my own labor. The distinction between brasses and woodwinds is not the reed, it is how the sound originates. Woodwinds, the initial vibration that is shaped and amplified by the horn, valves etc. originates in the instrument, the reed or sharp thin edge of the mouthpiece of the flute or piccolo. Brasses, the initial vibration is from the lips of the player.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUpF4Kk4XPA&list=RDLUpF4Kk4XPA&start_radio=1
Ok, to seriously answer the question:
SLD: Taxonomy is fake and gay, and only makes even vague sense within a specific use context*
Under the taxonomic scheme DrOtto is referring to, “woodwinds” consist of aerophones in which the initial vibration is produced by a part of the instrument. This includes all reeds as well as fipple flutes such as recorders/slide whistles, referee whistles, siren whistles and klaxons. “Brass” instruments (which include “true horns”) are aerophones which amplify the vibrations created by the player of the instrument. So trumpets, hunting horns, and kazoos.
*notably people in the western music tradition lump everything that makes sound by being struck as “percussion” whereas people specializing in non-European music split membranophones (drums) and idiophones (glockenspielen) into separate categories.
Too slow Rat!
You lost me – where do the Marima and Pyrophone fall?
Marimba is a percussion instrument in a symphonic orchestra, but an ideophone according to an ethnomusicologist.
Pyrophones are woodwinds to the people who call marimbas percussion instruments, but aerophones to the other peeps.
Thanks.
The phrase that stuck in my head was “an Internal Combustion Instrument” which I found to be a humorous turn of phrase.
You only break out the infernal engines for the 1812 Orchestra and they go with the percussion section!
“Hailey Dempsey, 27, shot her mom, Valerie DeBoe, in the early hours of May 3 at her home in Plant City, in the Tampa Bay area.
She then fled on foot with her three young daughters before killing her 4-year-old and 4-month-old daughters — and shooting at 2-year-old daughter but missing. She then turned the gun on herself….
Plant City Police Chief Richard Mills revealed Thursday that police had responded to the Dempseys’ home three times in the two days before the shootings….
Mills said there were “indications of some mental illness involved with the case.”

Question re: the AI generated header image,
Do all AIs include text capability now, or is that restricted to specific ones?

Most do. Some are better than others. Google’s Nano Banana 2 seems to handle text pretty well.

So in preparation for my reentry into shooting I discovered Ballistol. Recognizing that any cleaning and lubrication of firearms is like discussing deep dish, pineapple and pizza.
Prior to this I was traditional Hoppes 9 guy with synthetic lubricants. Never had any issues.
The thing I liked about the Ballistol is essentially mineral oil, alcohol and 7 herbs and spices that are modestly alkaline. It dissolves powder well and is hand friendly. It stinks, however. It won’t hurt wood and you can mostly spray everything. The mineral oil is going to throw a protective layer over the gun. It’s not going to be super lubricant IMHO. So I use synthetic mid viscosity lube at appropriate places after wiping down.
I’m happy as it’s quick and hand friendly. I’ll have to see if I’m a convert after a few cleaning sessions.
Cool.
mid viscosity lube at appropriate places
Go on…
I don’t shoot too frequently so would like a thorough cleaning and then a coating for longer term storage. Not like encased in a crate, but a lubricant/protection coating that would protect for months/year in ‘open’ storage. Low humidity region, so I got that going for me but still feel a bit of disquiet leaving un-shot guns sitting like that.
Any recommendations from the experts? Not that I’ll listen to you, what being “experts” and all, I distrust the lot of ya.
Linseed oil will protect them from from rust, but they should already be blackened/case hardened/plated etc.
Sean recommended FP-10 lubricant and it works well for me. I’m pretty lax about cleaning. I just cleaned my S2 this week for the first time since last Nationals*. But it seems that modern guns don’t require much cleaning, especially if you keep them in active use.
*Zero stoppages in that time, except for my extraction issues with the zinc-plated steel cased stuff.
I was the reverse – range just a few times a year. So I want to make sure the gun is clean and won’t rust in storage.
We will see if I end up shooting enough to that I won’t need to clean all the time.
Yep. FP-10 is my go to.
Also a fan of Slide-glide lite when I need some grease.
https://www.topgunsupply.com/enoss-slide-glide-2-oz-lite.html
It will last you a long time.
Balistol is my go to for cleaning and basic pistol and fud lube. I do use synthetic mil lube for AR.
While I rarely clean my guns, my magazines spontaneously rust given the slightest excuse, and having one not drop freely during a reload is infuriating.
IME, Ez-ox cleans off rust faster/more completely than Ballistol. DuPont Silicone makes a great impermeable layer on the mags but it wears off.
What you really want is epoxy. Soak it in that stuff and I guarantee it will not rust.
/trolling
I use Ballistol to clean, then a straight synthetic lubricant if storing for a while.
Synthetic lubricants are gay.
No, this is not an opinion, just an offensive joke.
I gay up my guns after bad experiences with petroleum based lube in the Middle East. Sand tended to stick to the old CLP.
All these euphemisms…
He didn’t mention buying 55 gallon barrels did he?
The only gun cleaning/lubrication product I have a strong opinion on is Wipe-Out foaming bore cleaner, for cleaning the barrels on my rifles. It’s great stuff, try it.
For all other cleaning and lubrication needs, I’m very indifferent. Mostly I use whatever was in the swag bag at the last big match I went to.
Note that I never clean my pistol or rimfire barrels. It’s unnecessary as long as you keep the chamber free of carbon deposits – a bronze chamber brush works wonders for this.
My Colt Match Target gets lead fouling after 500 rounds or and starts spraying.
It’s a beautiful classic gun, but not a great all day plinker.
True – with rimfires especially it depends on the bore finish, as to whether you’ll need to clean it or not.
The first person I ever ran into who never cleaned his rimfire barrels was a four-time Olympian in Smallbore Rifle, so clearly it worked for him.
Cool, I’m going to try this.
You are all making me feel better about being lazy on gun cleaning.
Had a birthday breakfast of biscuits and gravy with spicy sausage at a local restaurant. It was great, but also had enough salt to repopulate the Utah flats.
Happy birthday, R.J.!
congrats on getting older and hopefully wiser
HBD 🙂
Happy birthday! Good biscuits and gravy are hard to find.
As I use the Old Fashioned to judge a bar, I use biscuits and gravy to judge a diner. Price is absolutely a factor.
You’re trying to charge me $20 for biscuits and gravy? I’m walking right the fuck out of your establishment.
Exactly. Should be $10-12, have tons of sausage, and come with eggs. Now I’m hungry.
We used to have someone at the gym who worked at a cafe, and she’d save the extra biscuits and gravy for us instead of throwing it out. That was the good stuff. 10/10.
TOK, did you ever used to get the Biscuits and Gravy at Jimmy’s Cafe? I went there often when I was in college at VU. Cheap and delicious, I miss them.
It was $11 for biscuits and gravy with sunny side up eggs, bacon and seasoned hash browns. I will be back.
Oh you went to VU! I’m just a few miles south out in the country. I do like Jimmy’s, they have good, cheap breakfast that’s done well. Service is really fast. Every town should have a place like that, but we learned recently while traveling that’s not the case.
Damn, I’m hungry now too.
Shout-out here for my favorite local diner, the Virginian. Reminds me that I haven’t been there in while.
(‘Baseline Cocktails for Judging a Bar’ would make a great article. Mine are the Old-Fashioned, the Daiquiri, and the Martini – this is assuming a basic cocktail bar and not a Tiki lounge or other specialty establishment.)
I’ll throw a Negroni on the list – if you can’t handle that…
A Negroni would absolutely be suitable. I think a Martini is harder to get right, though.
HBD. We have a place around here that does what they call chicken in a biscuit. It’s a fried chicken breast, on top of two split biscuits covered in sausage gravy. I usually indulge myself and get a side of bacon to then crumble and bacon up my sausage gravy, because America.
😋
As someone who occupied an airbnb in the gulch, it was pretty decent. quiet comfortable bed. No Ac but no AC needed. I remember I wanted to give oMWC a drip bag of coffee, because my host was amazed at its existence, but I forgot.
A drip bag of coffee?
You mean like a tea bag? I remember Folger’s launching those back in the 80s/90s here.
it is a bag made of filter material with two little cardboard wing which allow you to place it on a glass, you rip the top part and pour hot water in like making filter coffee. great for travel.

TIL the WNBA logo is a woman… dunking.
I remember a few years ago the news was talking about the first dunk ever in the WNBA.
They showed the highlight and it was a lay up, not a dunk, but they insisted history had been made.
Is this really a dunk?
Did the player’s hand go above the hoop and push the ball down towards the net?
If not, it was no dunk.
Also, they were losing by 11 when she did this to cut the lead to 9.
They acted like she just won the game.
lol
Have they met and concluded what is a “woman” yet?
Anyone who identifies as a woman, unless the right people don’t believe they are telling the truth. Enos Kanter is not, but the serial rapists who announce that they are women are.
I heard they met and couldn’t agree on what a woman is.
I pity humans.
They met and determined there was nothing wrong with their current policies. I can only assume they’re going to rely on goodthinkful media outlets condemning “bad faith” gender expressions.
Awesome. I hope Ener and that other guy continue to try out for next season.
This shit doesn’t end without merciless mocking like their, and for the rest of us stop being go-along-to-get-along pussies.
OBE:
THIS is ESPN.
Now, this is just me… but I’d think determining who is allowed to play in your league should be the first step.
I’d go with “Genetically XX, has not been pumped full of hormones or performance enhancing substances.”
This may invalidate birth control though.
lol They can’t because the propaganda that has rotted so many people’s brains won’t allow it.
To be cliche:
Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.
I suspect there must already be at least one dude in the league and that’s why this is happening.
This may invalidate birth control though.
Not needed since lesbians can’t procreate unintentionally.
That meeting was never about defining what a woman is.
It was about making sure nobody was going to draft any retired NBA players, so the whole thing just goes away.
The WNBA should be shut down and the members laid off as an underperforming arm of the business. It loses money year over year and can’t get its ticket or merch sales up.
Maybe the WNBA should consider making the green dildos thrown at games? Those seem popular.
It’s subsidized by the NBA, who are subsidized by the CCP.
Then it needs to be shut down post haste.
As soon as attendance falls way below profit and the NBA doesn’t subsidize them it’ll fold like a cheap card table.
Attendence has never been above profit. The WNBA has operated at a loss since it was created.
They’d probably make more money (for a while) ditching all the teams and just having Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham touring and playing one-on-one.
It’s grown in popularity, mainly due to Caitlin Clark. However, part of the attraction is apparently letting black women assault white women without fear of being shot or reprimanded.
See – everything really does get more expensive!

I have no opinion on this other than change mid project on anything is never easy or cheap.
I heard years ago about the problems the electromagnetic catapults were having. I’m not surprised a “Go back to proven tech” directive got issued.
Of course it’s going to cost a bundle.
As per usual, the WSJ is full of shit.
This was a directive applying to a single carrier, with the explicit objective of reducing costs and bureaucratic sourcing problems.

YT;DW: small town cops so dirty that DA won’t prosecute their cases, TX Rangers and Po-po licensing body are auditing.
Good morning Glibs! Last night power was restored to our establishment so the fans and AC ran all night. We should be able to get things back to normal today. Meanwhile I have several refugees at my house today. Some spent the night and some just needed a place to shower and work. We had plans to stay in a cabin in Michigan with some friends this weekend and it looks like we’ll be able to do that. This is the weekend the model jets are flying at a small airport near the cabin.
I assume these refugees are your relations you mentioned as being without electricity.
Sounds like things are on the mend.
Things are moving along. I’m impressed. They estimate 90% will be back by Tuesday at 11:59pm and 100% by Friday at 11:59pm.
My overnight guests are mother-in-law, sister-in-law, niece, and 2 dogs. For the day it’s a friend and her 2 kids. But we have room.
😀👍
You’re a good man (and Mrs TOK), TOK
I would say my mom and dad raised me right, but that generosity comes more from my wife’s side (my mother-in-law is a saint). This entire time I’ve been very grateful we were ok, and I fully expected to help people as this went on. 2 days is one thing, but a whole week with no power is a different ordeal.
Since Europe has incentivized and opened the floodgate to Chinese EVs – this suggest European auto manufacturers are in for continued rough times.

It sounds like the solution is unrestricted submarine warfare against these vessels carrying hazardous waste to Europe.
You have a very optimistic evaluation of Europe’s capability for submarine warfare…
Europe?
No, we’d be sinking them as part of the ongoing war between China and the US.
“this suggest European auto manufacturers are in for continued rough times.”
They have already gone to Brussels to tell them there are gonna be a ton of bankruptcies… And Brussels told them they would not stop the stupid, but steal more money from the serfs to prop them up for now…
I can see them selling in France, but not so much in Germany.
Problem is the EU basically forcing EVs.
BMW are generally the best overall followed by VW, but Mercedes EVs are awful.
And random runabout Chinese EVs are much cheaper than anything BMW makes which leaves you with a mediocre VW choice.
I was more going with Germany doesn’t generate enough electricity to support EVs.
For those of you that haven’t been following NFA news:

I cannot wait for Brandon to get elected to Congress, and then whichever (D) wins the presidency in 2028 to have him arrested.
I support his objective of National Constitutional Carry.
But don’t expect it to get far once it meets the rest of congress.
Fortunately, it’s settled law that one cannot be prosecuted in the future for doing something that was legal at the time (although we both know that the Progressives would love to overturn that standard.)
Myself, I’m shopping for a new ultralight can to go on a precision AR build. Looking hard at the B&T PrintX VERS36.
“Possession of an Unregistered Silencer”?
No such law in Texas*, and federal registration is specifically what was found unconstitutional by the District Court of North Texas, for the applicable plaintiffs. He’s in the clear.
* – Legal ownership of silencers *is* tied to federal registration in several other states.
“Nightmarish murder weapon husband used to kill his mom, wife and his seven-year-old daughter before taking his own life at daycare amid marriage woes…
A Minnesota husband who killed his wife, mom and seven-year-old daughter in a murder suicide used a screwdriver to carry out the massacre, it has been revealed.”
https://www.dailymail.com/news/article-16052613/Minnesota-daycare-murder-suicide-screwdriver-Nathan-Brown.html
Nightmarish?
It’s the Daily Fail. Screwdrivers are weapons of street violence they expect the muggers to stab them with when taking their shoes.
Ya know, suicide would have been a simpler solution. Leave the others out of one’s problems.
Maybe the screwdriver was that thing that goes up on a Swiss army knife and as such, was considered a military weapon?
“A public swimming pool in Germany marketed as being inclusive planned an event that would ‘be open exclusively to Black communities’…..
The theatre cited ‘security concerns’ for its decision, which followed ‘the fact that swimming for Black children and teenagers has become the target of right-wing and racist harassment’.”
https://www.dailymail.com/news/article-16052229/German-swimming-pool-Black-people-furious-backlash.html
Black people can swim?
So, when is it reserved for the ethnic Germans?
They swim in theaters in Germany?
Outdoor swimming pool, and a publicity stunt protesting the state of infrastructure in Berlin.
Natural rhythm
Nothing says can’t we all get along like race-specific event planning.
“There are still plenty of pitfalls. MAGA leaders like Tucker Carlson are clocking the anti-Flock movement and trying to hijack it. Using conspiracy theories, he and others can redirect attention away from real enemies — tech oligarchs and compliant politicians — and toward blaming phantasms like the “deep state,” falsely insinuating that the tech spies are left-wingers doing some poorly defined socialism. This has the twin benefits of ginning up outrage at innocent people, while also shielding the very right-wing forces that are actually the source of the problem.”
https://www.salon.com/2026/08/14/the-flock-uprising-is-just-the-beginning/
Almost made it to the end without going full retard.
I don’t know how you do it.
Mandy?
We long since entered the era where the left bases its arguments more on who is for or against that particular thing rather than anything to do with the thing. They’re defending flock cameras here simply because of the sorts of people who have criticized them.
We can’t have cross-the-aisle-agreement even on something like flock cameras because many people refuse to agree even temporarily with the icky sorts of wrong people.
And maybe some portion of the people writing to defend this shit are just no-shit intelligence assets getting told what to say.
Moral superiority is an incredibly tenuous status.
Just watched a Bloomberg interview with the Flock CEO – he was shocked police were abusing the system and was heavy on ensuring checks on police abuse. Additionally, calls for Goverment to do more to ensure private companies are using this technology correctly – specific shout-out to California for their efforts. Now I am definitely on the side of use Flock with extreme caution and prejudice.
Best way to ensure privacy?
Burn the data to the ground, tear down all the cameras, and start executing people who created or used the system.
That should buy a decade or so.
“innocent people”
LOL she is the gift that keeps on giving.
Love for her to be subject to one of those mistaken stops because her license plate was only 1 character/number off.
I get the impression of one of those combative drivers who turns a warning stop into a felony arrest where they get a wrap and a spit hood after catching several “Battery on a LEO” charges.
I’m just curious, what would Glibs say is one of the top priorities when they get off their ass to visit a doctor for a routine exam/screening? Personally, if I have cancer is usually at the top of the list. I’d imagine it’s the same for everyone. Like you want the doctor to notice the thing that’s a sign of cancer, right?
I call this the NHS paradox. Much is made about how Euros like the Brits with their famed NHS system see the doctor more times per year. They have quicker access in this one single metric even whereas they wait longer for everything else.
Despite this Americans have far better cancer survival rates across the board and overall. That extends out to mortality rates even with fewer Americans dying of cancer despite more being diagnosed with it. This is attributed simply to earlier screening and treatment on top of having the best treatments available.
Since Obamacare, it’s really fucking hard to find anyone arguing FOR any aspect of American healthcare. The common refrain is that the system is entirely broken and people either throw up their hands or demand universal coverage (the increasingly popular choice).
The proponents of nationalized systems refuse to even acknowledge any drawbacks to them. They’ve been told most of their lives now that the government plan is more efficient in every way and by god they believe that shit.
The fact is if you removed America from the equation, there’d be almost no innovation in healthcare. As it stands the vasts majority of truly novel treatments come out of America because of that dreaded profit motive.
On top of that, one reason shit costs more is the doctors are incentivized to rape your insurance. It’s an adversarial system and they aint scared to order more testing if they know the insurance will pay. Which insurance does at higher rates than people think.
The NHS doesn’t truly reject people that much even for elective shit. What they do is stick you on a waiting list for 12+ months (many cases much, much longer). They basically trap you in a bureaucratic hell from which you can’t escape because it’s gentler and kinder.
America’s private auth system screens cases out pretty bluntly, yet even there nearly all cases that are appealed and more documentation is given get approved. So it’s almost as if where there is a reason, most people actually DO get coverage from the private insurer whereas in the truly frivolous bullshit goes nowhere.
The rates of people who just end up stuck in limbo are very similar to those who get denied here in America. And Americans continue to get more surgeries than those in the UK.
So what the fuck are they visiting their primary care doctors FOR exactly? It seems more like the goal is to just rubber stamp them and keep them interacting and engaged with the NHS to feel comfortable and secure. When the cancer comes they may die more often, but they’ll never connect that to a government rationing system that intentionally overlooks symptoms that call for more testing to cut costs.
But yea, the propaganda war on all this has been lost. I despite boomers, but once they die off we’re going to be getting universal healthcare good and hard.
Reason isn’t influential enough to blame for anything, but they are an example of how that happened. How many fucking times did you hear those useless cunts give into the left’s premise that healthcare was fundamentally broken and that we needed a comprehensive medical reform of some kind? Dems have a bad plan, but at least it’s a plan! GOP has none!
How about as fucking libertarians you explain to people that cutting out the bullshit waste caused by government is in fact a plan you cunts? I guess that’d take an actual commitment to libertarianism though.
I go every year for a checkup and bloodwork, and the cycle for colonoscopies and such. I would imagine that catches 90% or more of major health problems (high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, cancer).
Another complaint about our system is that doctors and nurses have to spend most of their time typing into a computer instead of paying attention to patients.
I think the data is pretty clear that most visits are essentially “null” from a value perspective. I’m 58 and haven’t visited a physician for 25 years at which time they decided a battery of tests were required for a birth control prescription (sorry, no).
I’m 64, and haven’t been to a doctor in probably 13 years? Something like that. I’m healthier than most people I know in their 60s.
Same with DOGE: as ham-fisted and sometimes misdirected as it was, few of the “cut spending” crowd offered any support.
the system is entirely broken and people either throw up their hands or demand universal coverage
I believe it remains true that if you ask about “the healthcare system in the US”, you get the “it’s horrible and broken” but if you ask “how is your healthcare?” people are generally pleased.
The health care system is fine. The insurance industry is fucked because of meddling by FedGov.
One reason it’s overpriced is because it’s over-regulated.
Protectionism by the AMA is another major fucking problem
Depends on what I’m seeing him or her for. If a finger up the ass or a testicular exam is in the cards, I look for a cute female with small hands. Anything else, I just ask Prime for a recommendation.
Watched first episode of new Reacher. Before it begins there is an explicit warning about a suicide but nothing for the multiple homicides and gruesome torture…
Also, there is an Asian character whose rack was so big that my wife looked at me and rolled her eyes.
I’m going to misinterpret this as she ran a museum on medieval torture and use the exhibits on real people.
Stayed up too late last night watching the second episode. It has enough sleuthing and violence to keep me interested.
I’m not complaining.
“On Thursday morning, the parents of Nolan Wells, Christine Wells-Wonsley and Elmore Wonsley, along with Ben Crump, the civil rights attorney, and Rev Al Sharpton, the famed civil rights activist, spoke at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention in Atlanta. Wells was an 18-year-old college student who was found dead on 6 July after a boating trip with friends, and his death captured national attention.
Wells went missing on 4 July and a photo of the teen, who was Black, and his three friends on the trip, who were white, went viral. Social media users have speculated that Wells’s disappearance, death and the perceived lack of urgency in the county’s investigation into what happened to the teen are because of his race….
John Ledbetter, the Jackson county sheriff, has said that he does not suspect any foul play in Wells’ death, and that the others on the boat are cooperating with the police investigation. No suspects have been named, nor has anyone been taken into custody with regards to Wells’ disappearance and death. Three people have been arrested, however, in separate cases: an Illinois man who allegedly threatened to kill police officers; an Ohio woman who allegedly made threatening calls to the Jackson county sheriff’s office and the George county chancery office; and a California man who was indicted for allegedly making violent threats on social media to Ashlee Cole, a Jackson county chancery court judge and the stepmother of one of Wells’ friends. The three people who went boating with Wells have all retained attorneys.”

WCPGW?
I think I just hurt my eyes rolling them so hard…
Joke’s on us. There are probably already a couple dozen CCP snipers aimed at the White House at any given time.
If you’re lucky, when you’re walking around downtown near the White House, you can catch the Secret Service counter-sniper teams moving around on the nearby buildings during shift change. You have to be lucky, though, because they mix up the times and locations to keep the opposition from finding a coverage hole.
Snipers hitting the White House is a silly fantasy. There just ain’t no way.
It’s an observation post, not a sniper.
Just more data collection, not an assassin.
This is infinitely more likely – although I don’t thing the CoG for technical collections in DC is anywhere near the White House. More likely the bars at Bullfeathers or Old Ebbits Grill, where the congressional aides and State Department apparatchiks go to get hammered after work.

Mossad is going to have to take her out.
Ah, the old “I just can’t sit by and do nothing when I have a voice”. Yes, you can. All this does is validate the people who agree with you and alienate the people who don’t. No minds were changed. This never moves the needle, it just makes the person in the spotlight feel better about themselves.
these things are likely to end up as party houses for college kids
That was a big foofaraw in Bozeman. My response was always, “I hope you get a permanent full time neighbor who is noisy and obnoxious.”
I’d rather have the occasional collage parties than asshole neighbors with dangerous dogs and floodlights.
Two hours later, there were eight empty bottles and seven unsteady village residents.
I’m sure the liquor board will be pleased.
I’ve been to many wine dinner where we achieve more that one empty bottle per person. But two hours is an aggressive pace.
Unmentioned – these were 100mL bottles.
I’ve been to many wine dinner where we achieve more that one empty bottle per person. But two hours is an aggressive pace.
In a licensed establishment, after hours?
Private homes.
I have been part of the after hours party with staff at several bars until well into the morning. Once I got a ride home from the head of the police union, he was also present after hours at the bar.
Another take on the USS Abraham Lincoln… The carrier fleet is aging and replacements are behind schedule. Increasing the size of the fleet isn’t even on the table right now. That pretty much sums it up.
B-52s are being flown by the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of those who first flew them.
What’s not the left’s Achilles’ heel, strictly speaking, is its democratic socialism, which almost invariably takes the form of social democratic proposals when socialist candidates campaign. Wealth taxes, higher taxes on the rich, greatly enhanced workers’ rights; universal publicly funded health insurance, child care, and senior care; opposition to monopolies, ending big money’s control of politics, establishing public options to private corporations in essential sectors—these are the issues that such socialists as Bernie Sanders, AOC, and Zohran Mamdani have successfully run on, and that Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong also ran on, as well as her opposition to the spread of data centers.
You know… serious practical common sense solutions to the rampant fascism and robber baron thievery of the Trump regime.
At least back when commies were more honest, they told you that socialism was just a stepping stone to communism.
This asshole is pretending otherwise.

So here’s some red meat for y’all – The crime of interstate stalking resulting in death, under 18 U.S.C. 2261A, does not carry a mandatory minimum sentence.
😡
Who failed to include one – or worse, removed one that was there? Are they still alive to be stalked interstate?
Nevermind, don’t tell me, I don’t want to be a prime suspect.
Is he counting on the judge thinking he’s “dreamy”?
Here’s hoping for an angry lesbian.
Because they are known purveyors of justice and not likely to be crazy “Bad CEO” types.
I was angling for a manhater who will give harsher sentences because the defendant had the audacity to be male.
Snipers hitting the White House is a silly fantasy. There just ain’t no way.
A smallguided missile from the side door of a van will do the trick. I have it on good authority (the cinemah!) that these can be directed with pinpoint accuracy, and have the destructive power of the entire bomb load of a B-17.
“Lilly Wachowski, the director of “The Matrix,” is struggling to secure funding for a new film because it features a “wall-to-wall trans cast.”
Wachowski is currently developing “The Hunted,” a film with a projected budget of roughly $10 million. During an appearance on KCRW’s “The Business” podcast on Friday, Wachowski said Hollywood has been reluctant to film the project due to its cast….
According to a report by Deadline, the film is reportedly set in a dystopian version of America where transgender people face discrimination and violence. The story follows a series of crimes against the transgender community, eventually leading two transgender-identifying women to search for the perpetrator and uncover a conspiracy that reached the government.”

OFFS!
I can’t wait to run out and see that.
So it’s a documentary?
The world as seen through the eyes of a paranoid schitzophrenic.
His net worth is $250M. He could fund it himself.
But, but, he’s never funded a movie in his career! It was always other people’s money, why should the money pipeline stop flowing?
Just spitballin’ but maybe it’s struggling to secure funding not due to the choice of actors but because it sounds stupid and won’t make any money.
Well, we know that, but he’s got his head so far up the butthole of the progressive bubble that he doesn’t see losing $10mil as being something that should stop this impactful message from being made.
If he even thinks about making money at all.
He can’t come up with ten million?
Senate GOP sources say the legislation would not be able to pass the upper chamber with unanimous consent and warn that pushing it to the floor under regular order would take up at least a week of the Senate’s time. That’s a big price to pay when there are only a few weeks of legislative session left in the year and a lot of priorities on the agenda, they say.
