A Louisiana state judge might have overstepped his authority. I don’t understand why this isn’t in federal court. That Lane Kiffin circus might not be as crazy as the one happening at UNC. The Astros won again, but so did the Rangers. The AL West/WC race is really heating up with a little over 20 games to go in the season. Zverev sweated out another 5-setter. And college football is officially back. I know that because Rutgers is officially embarrassing the rest of the Big Ten on the field. And that’s it for sports.

I can’t believe this nonsense is happening. I guess they don’t want to go along to get along when it means getting along with a bunch of imbeciles who will excuse cold-blooded murder.

Wait, why weren’t they doing this all along? Because they should have been.

And speaking of people who should be criminally charged… These assholes should all be locked up.

Don’t take your kink to work. This used to be common knowledge.

This is amazing. And in a good way, for a change.

TANSTAAFL. I guess I’m evil for saying that, according to NPR.

Well, it’s a good start. But we gotta pump those numbers up. Those are rookie numbers in this business.

Thanks for the advice, Karen. Now kindly fuck off.

This is a good resolution. I guess the admins had no sense of humor. Now we just need it applied against the other millions of ideologues running (and ruining) college campuses across the country.

Now the clankers are actively trying to kill people. Time for a preemptive strike on them. Who’s with me (besides SugarFree, who will be leading the charge)?

A short little track to start your day. I wish it was 10 minutes long. Same goes for this one. Oh well, enjoy them in their abbreviated perfection.

And enjoy this lovely Friday and holiday weekend, dear friends.

I’m more fascinated on a nobody defense attorney treating the case as his own social media booster.

I’m more interested in the mass psychosis/social media contagion we’re seeing. People who weren’t there, and did not examine evidence or testimony, are 100% sure about what happened based on TikTok and Facebook videos. Any of us can make a video breathlessly citing “new information” that is entirely made up such as “the husband was seen driving 100mph going in the wrong direction with an alien in the car at the time he was supposed to be at the store”.

One of the most important things I learned from Scott Adams is to ask how many times the person was right in the past. I’m pretty sure “pilatesmom25” doesn’t have a sterling record.

What depresses me is that there will be a bunch of copy cats in the future.

The goal of far too many people is to become “famous”. Just like Columbine inspired a bunch of copy cat school shootings, I’m worried that a lot of crazy moms will see themselves gaining fame for killing their kids.

When I told a second amendment-supporting friend about our collection, she said: “You need to lock them up or get rid of them.”

You know in creative writing class, you need to find your hook. That is what the above is. Its the basis of her storytelling.

Now who knows what the real conversation but it probably was more in line with “you moved out here and have no idea how to handle those firearms, so either secure them, get training or get rid of them before you kill yourself or worse, someone else”

See, I can make up a premise too!

    • Fourscore

      • R C Dean

For home defense, get a Beretta 1301.

      • UnCivilServant

Not sure what a starter shotgun would be.

I suppose it would be – not terribly expensive, representative of the class to the point of being generic, doesn’t have any serious quirks or drawbacks for someone unaccustomed to get tripped up by.

So not top of class, but with a lot of commonalities to the other shotguns.

Probably the first thing you need to decide is whether you want to go pump or semi-auto.* The manual of arms for each has some significant differences and you may not want to get drill on both enough to get them down to muscle-memory. That said, different shotguns even within a class will run a little differently – safety, shell release, etc.

I’m a semi-auto guy; I think modern semi-autos are more reliable than pumps unless and until you have thousands of repetitions on the pump.

You can get a solid pump for less than a good semi-auto. So there’s that.

*I’m assuming you don’t want to go single or double-barrel.

      • Not Adahn

In general any new shotgun by Mossberg, Beretta or Benelli is going to be good.

There is an amazingly broken price/performance discontinuity wherein the most expensive shotguns are O/U break actions. I’ve had skeet/trap enthusiasts try and justify this by claiming the internals on such guns are actually stronger ’cause they shoot a lot more than a hunter will. And yet you can buy a world-class 3-gun/ IPSC shotgun world shoot semiauto model for less than a tenth of a high-end trap model.

      • EvilSheldon

RE: starter shotgun – every ‘what is the best gun’ question should start out with the question ‘what do you want to do with it?’ More than most other types of guns, shotguns are specialty tools – a shotgun suitable for waterfowl hunting isn’t going to work for upland game, and a dedicated home defense shotgun isn’t going to be great for 3-gun competition.

What’s your primary use case, right now, in your mind?

      • Ted S.

        EvilSheldong

        That is *some* typo.

What’s your primary use case, right now, in your mind?

Filling a gap in my collection.

The reason I don’t own one is that I don’t actually have a use for one. So the odds are I’m not going to acquire one for a while.

      • Gender Traitor

Is a shotgun still considered the preferred firearm for home defense unless you really wouldn’t mind too much if you happened to take out one or more of your neighbors along with the burglar? (Oopsie!)

      • kinnath

GT. Shotgun is fine. Choice of shells is the issue.

Paul Harrel did some great videos on the subject. #1 Buck will over penetrate your walls and endanger others, but #3 or #4 Buck will do the job and not over penetrate walls

      • EvilSheldon

Less a typo, more a Freudian slip? 😜😜😜

GT – a shotgun is a very effective home defense weapon, but they have some disadvantages – namely heavy recoil and the potential difficulty of confidently running a pump action. If you can train through those, there’s nothing legal that hits like a shotgun up close.

      • Gender Traitor

        heavy recoil

That’s why I choose a 20 ga. instead of a 12 ga. to store on brackets on my side of the bed.

      • Furthest Blue pistoffnick (370HSSV)

What would be a good starter shotgun?

Remington 870 or Mossberg 500, both are classic, iconic, plentiful, and relatively cheap.

      • bacon-magic

My fave: Mossberg 500 (28″ barrel, hunting gun)
One of the most popular in hunting: Remington 870
Cheapest but works: Encore(made in Turkey)
Home defense: Mossberg 500 security or the 590(sweet but high priced)
I prefer pumps…semi-autos you will pay a lot more for and not really have a good justification for it.

      • EvilSheldon

I would not take any advice from Paul Harrel – the man was an overpromoted idiot, and his take on shotgun ammo selection was a case in point.

The truth of the matter is, any projectile capable of inflicting a decisive wound on a human being, is going to go though normal residential wall construction like it wasn’t even there. The human body is way more resilient than plaster or drywall.

The way to avoid ‘overpenetrating’ and shooting your neighbors is to manage the lanes of fire in your home, and don’t miss the person you’re shooting at.

      • bacon-magic

Tacticool shotty that has a hell of a kick: Mossberg Shockwave or if you want a bullpup get a Tavor TS12 or Keltec KSG.

      • EvilSheldon

GT – I love 20ga. shotguns. I learned to shoot skeet with a Remington 1100 LT-20, still probably the best-handling shotgun I’ve ever owned.

Sadly, good home defense loads are a lot harder to find in 20ga. versus 12ga. It’s something of a market failure.

      • R C Dean

the potential difficulty of confidently running a pump action

Which is why, unless you are planning to run thousands of shells through it while training, you should get a semi-auto. The old canard that semi-autos aren’t reliable is outdated; my 1301 has a couple thousand rounds through it ranging from light bird shot through slugs, and didn’t fully eject a couple of slugs.

there’s nothing legal that hits like a shotgun up close.

Yup. And home defense ranges are going to be up close. A 20 gauge gives plenty of stopping power if you are worried about recoil. I find my 1301 is quite manageable on that front; semiautos typically have a little softer recoil.

gun owners see liberals as bleeding hearts determined to confiscate their weapons. But keeping guns away from children seemed like the one place where we might meet.

I am ready to call bullshit on the economics one. Most studies are laboratory studies which are not really that relevant to real life behavior.

The two naturalistic studies say high class individuals behave worse in traffic.

“As vehicles are reliable indicators of a person’s social rank and wealth (15), we used observers’ codes of vehicle status (make, age, and appearance) to index drivers’ social class. Observers stood near the intersection, coded the status of approaching vehicles, and recorded whether the driver cut off other vehicles by crossing the intersection before waiting their turn”

How the Scale WorksThe Visual Ladder: Respondents view a drawing of a 10-rung ladder representing the societal hierarchy.Top vs. Bottom: The top rungs represent people with the most money, highest education, and most respected jobs; the bottom rungs represent those with the least.Self-Placement: Participants mark the specific rung where they believe they stand.

Proof that Minnesoda is unfairly maligned for having no taste at all

If you’re aboard a pontoon on Mille Lacs, there’s a sixer in the cooler. If you’re sitting under the sun at Target Field, there’s Mich Golden for sale in your section. The beer is so woven into Minnesota summer that they sell cases branded with the phrase “LAKE LIFE” as soon as the weather turns post-glacial.

Doug Hoverson, a beer historian and author of Land of Amber Waters: The History of Brewing in Minnesota, calls Mich Golden a “nostalgia beer.” He recalls the brand’s heyday wistfully.

“It’s the ultimate beer that was brewed for refreshment rather than flavor,” he says, almost laughing. “For that group that came of age in the ’90s, [Mich Golden is] what someone had a warm case of in the back of their car.”

Hoverson balks at the idea that this nearly flavorless beer appealed to Minnesotans’ bland palates, or that there was some cosmic connection to the Minnesotan way of life.

Mich Golden is my goto bar beer. Mostly because it is always the cheapest thing on tap.

      More Minnesoda Beer History

I fondly remember Lakemaid. It wasn’t a bad cheap beer. You also have to pull for the brewer that tells the Feds to pound sand

[Lakemaid] knew Lake Waconia and Lake Mille Lacs would be packed with ice fishermen ahead of Super Bowl XLVIII, primetime for the ad industry. A year earlier, in 2013, Amazon had made headlines across the world when it announced the impending arrival of delivery drones. Supple knew what his team had to do: Load a $15,000 DJI-S800 drone with Lakemaids and zip ‘em across the sky to thirsty ice shacks. The stunt worked, attracting over 800,000 YouTube views that Lakemaid parlayed into TV spots on Fox News and The Today Show.

The FAA was displeased. The agency sent Supple an 87-page document outlining how commercial drone distribution is prohibited. Supple was undeterred, telling the Stevens Point Journal: “We’re going to continue to set up drone ports throughout the Upper Midwest with some of our best retailers who are on lake shores.”

    Uffda.

Boy Mayor Frey is proposing to cut the budget for “violence interrupters”.

Minneapolis is in the middle of a budget crunch and can’t afford to throw money out the windows of City Hall anymore.

When Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey presented his proposed budget for 2027, he returned again and again to a familiar theme: tough times call for tough decisions about which programs work for the city and which don’t.

In line with that, Frey proposed “doubling down” on the city’s Community Safety Ambassador program, citing “early signs of success.”

Conversely, he said, funding would drop for violence interrupters, calling it a “noble program filled with committed and talented community leaders,” but one that “has not demonstrated the level of results taxpayers deserve.”

Frey’s compliments came as cold comfort to Muhammad Abdul-Ahad, executive director of T.O.U.C.H Outreach. The nonprofit is one of the three organizations funded by the city to train and employ violence interrupters – people with deep community connections who walk the streets seeking to build relationships, alleviate tensions and connect neighbors to resources.

The good news is that Frey still wants Community Safety Ambassadors. They will cost the same as the violence interrupters, but there will be fewer of them and they will be city employees (pensions ahoy!).

    • Pope Jimbo

How could anyone think about taking money away from violence interrupters?

The Minnesota Attorney General’s Office (AGO) is suing the former directors of one of the original “violence interrupter” groups formed in the wake of the George Floyd riots, saying they misused over $6.5 million in charitable funds for personal use and expenses.

The lawsuit, which does not involve criminal charges, alleges Pollard and McGuigan committed numerous violations of charities laws by misusing over $6.5 million in nonprofit assets, engaging in numerous governance and oversight violations that enabled the rampant abuse of assets, lying to the AGO in the course of its investigation, and ultimately causing the demise of the nonprofit to steal its business for personal gain, a press release from the AGO summarized.

The man who carried out a deadly shooting in a Minneapolis apartment building on September 2 had been investigated in June after displaying a handgun, but wasn’t charged, the county prosecutor said Thursday.

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said Carlton Johnson had “displayed the weapon but it did not leave his waistband” in the June 25th encounter. Minneapolis Police, who responded to the call that day, said he had a legal permit to carry the weapon, she said in a statement.

        * Yes, two cops were shot responding to this asshole’s shooting spree, but I’m withholding judgement until someone confirms that they didn’t shoot each other by accident/panic.

Don’t get me started on traffic calming.

A local retail development near here just started a new road construction project to add traffic calming to THE major intersection. The reason that traffic calming is needed is because the retail project was so badly designed that everyone drives like a maniac to avoid getting stuck in traffic light hell.

Instead of fixing the basic issue, the city planners decided to constrict traffic even further. I’m sure that this will fix everything.

        UCS:

My most hated term is “road diet”. Road diets have almost become more popular in my neighborhood than roundabouts. If you can imagine such a thing.

Perfectly good 4 lane roads (2 lanes each direction) are being converted to 2 lane roads. The new setup has a central turn lane and one lane in each direction. Since there is still a ton of room left, there are very wide shoulders. Before you suggest that Neph and his fellow cyclists will be happy, you need to know that all these roads also have 8 ft wide bike paths already.

Just a complete waste of space. I’m sure that there was some big pile of cash for local planners to implement road diets and my city decided to grab as much of it as they can.

      • UnCivilServant

Jimbo, it sounds to me like the answer is five lane roads. Keep the turning lane, ditch the bike lanes and broad shoulders for two more lanes.
