Cocktails That I Like Part 3

by | Oct 13, 2026 | Cocktails, Pastimes | 61 comments

Looking at Part 2 and I realizing that I should have split it into cocktails my wife likes and the ones I like. These ones are all me.

Continuing the count from there:

#6 Rum Runner

1 oz White Rum

1 oz Dark Rum

1 oz Pineapple Juice

1 oz Banana Liqueur

1 oz Creme de Cassis

1 oz ml Orange Juice

1/2 oz Grenadine

1/2 oz 151 Proof Rum

Fill a glass with ice and add all the ingredients except the 151 then stir. Pour the 151 as a float over the drink.

This one is dangerous. I use the same blackberry liqueur here that I use for the bramble with Giffard Banane and canned pineapple juice. The rum flavor is good, with a local silver rum and Smith and Cross for the two rums, and Hamilton 151 for the float.

#7 Dark Daquiri

This Rum is SMOOOOTH

2 oz good dark rum

1 oz fresh lime juice

1/2 oz rich Demerara syrup (2:1 sugar:water)

Shake with ice and then double strain over crushed ice.

Dos Maderas 5+5 rum is so good in this. A lot of recipes say 3/4 or 1 oz of lime juice, but I am an unrefined heathen, so I always just use one lime worth of juice. Every time I make this drink, it feels like somebody else is sneaking drinks of it, because it disappears way too quickly. One of these days, I’m going to find that guy and kick his ass.

#8 Old Fashioned

2 oz whiskey

1/2 oz rich Demerara Syrup

6 dashes or so of Angostura Bitters

1 orange peel

Stir whiskey, syrup, and bitters together with ice and strain over large ice cube

This one is Nephilium’s fault. My wife and I went to Richmond for a Dead South concert. This was the 4th time we have seen them and as always we had a great time.

We stayed at the Moxie, a weird little hotel, but nice enough and with my Marriott points it was free. With the room came 2 coupons for free drinks, so after the concert we went to the bar and found out the free drinks were either a gin or vodka high ball. My wife ordered a gin highball and I gave her the other coupon.

The bartender asked me what I wanted and I couldn’t see the rum bottles from my seat, so I panicked. I remember Neph had said to order an old fashioned to test a bar’s quality, so that’s what I ordered. I then thought I shouldn’t have done that because I don’t really like whiskey, but she had already started to make it, so I figured I could manage.

She gave it to me and it was excellent. I asked her what she had made it with and she said Uncle Nearest Tennessee whiskey. I had never heard of it, but I really liked it. I drank it and ordered another one. She asked if she could use the same ice cube since the first one didn’t have time to melt, I said that was fine. She then apologized and said that she only had one ounce of Uncle Nearest left so it was half that and half Crown Royal. Not nearly as good, but I finished it, helped my wife finish her second gin highball and we went to our room.

If she had more of the Uncle Nearest, I would have stayed there longer and maybe the fiasco that happened later could have been averted. See drink #10 for details.

My Fancy Stirring Pitcher

My favorite way to make one

When I made myself one at home, it was good, but not as great as I remembered. I watched a few videos and in all of them they squeezed an orange peel over the glass. I had assumed this was bartender flair and didn’t do that, nor did I garnish it with an orange peel. I tried it once, just to satisfy my curiosity and found out it was not flair, it was the missing ingredient. I was astonished at how much that improved the drink. I have also tried other bitters, but I like it best with the Angostura.

My wife bought me an ice mold for round ice and it works pretty well, much better than how I used to do it with my fridge ice.

#9 King Kong

Not My Picture

1 1/2 oz Whiskey

1/2 oz Smith & Cross Jamaican Rum

1/2 oz Giffard Banane du Brésil Liqueur

3 dashes Angostura Bitters

Stir whiskey, rum, Giffard Banane, and bitters together with ice and strain over large ice cube

Like a regular Old Fashioned, but STRONG. I like it, my wife could barley handle the smell. I prefer the original, but this is a nice variation. I use more than 3 dashes of the bitters. In the video, he uses lemon peel, but to me, lemon tastes like Pledge cleaner smells, so I use orange for this one also.

#10 Cherry Peanut Butter

So Simple, But So Good

1 12 oz bottle of Cheerwine

1 (or 2) oz Luxardo Sour Cherry Gin

1 (or 2) oz Peanut Butter Whiskey

I don’t know if I invented this, but that’s what I call it. For the Cheerwine, get the glass bottles. The cans and plastic bottles are made with corn syrup instead of sugar and are not quite as good. If Cheerwine is not available, it is almost as good with Cherry Dr. Pepper or Cherry Coke.

This one almost killed us the night after the above mentioned Dead South concert. After we went to the room, we started drinking these and listening to music.

We were really enjoying ourselves and I kept laughing about how even with 2 oz each of the PB whiskey and cherry gin, you could not taste the alcohol. I don’t know how many I drank, but I was HAMMERED. Finally we decided we should sleep, so I went to brush my teeth.

While I was in there, my wife was talking to me, and she cut off mid-sentence. I found her passed out like her switch had been turned off, so I covered her up and picked up her phone to set the alarm. Is said 5:47. I thought for sure her phone was broken, so I found mine and it said the same thing. OH NO!, Check out time was 10:00, so I set the alarm for 9:30.

That was a rough morning, I am too old for these kind of shenanigans any more. It was an hour to get to Williamsburg for breakfast at my favorite chicken and waffle place, and I didn’t even enjoy the meal. Then it was another hour to get home. We got home around 1 pm and I went to bed for a couple hours. I don’t plan on doing that again, but I didn’t really plan on doing it that time either.

A lot of my cocktail knowledge and recipes come from 3 YouTube channels, if you had clicked on the videos in the drink names you would have seen them:

I do have one more to add:

    Apple Old Fashioned

I made a cider reduction, simmering 2 cups of pure apple cider with a cinnamon stick until it went down to ½ cup.

    2 oz whiskey(he used bourbon)

½ oz of the apple cider syrup

    1 dash Black Walnut Bitters

    1 dash Angostura Bitters

Orange oil expressed across the top(I did this for the first one, but it didn’t work with the apple so I left it off)

1st I made one with Maker’s Mark bourbon, and it was good, but the orange did not match the apple.

Then I made one with Uncle Nearest, also really good.

Last I made one with Laird’s Apple Brandy and it was the best. It was so good, it tasted like another one.
I like this as much or maybe better than the traditional Old Fashioned with Uncle Nearest.

    • DEG

      This looks good.

Some of the cocktails in the article look good too.

      • ron73440

        Thanks

  2. UnCivilServant

    1 oz ml Orange Juice

What’s an oz ml? Did you convert this from a Metric Recipe?!

    • ron73440

You caught me, I cut and paste the recipe.

It had both oz and ml measurements, but I missed the ml in the orange juice.

I hope my pay doesn’t get docked for this.

    • Rat on a train

      Australian ml?

  3. The Hyperbole

I haven’t seen Uncle Nearest where I get my booze but it looks the like they stock it at another shop ( a new place I haven’t been to yet), I’ll have to give it a try.

    • PieInTheSky

Uncle Nearest – i thought they was bankrupt

have you not heard that juice and sugar are bad for you?

      • ron73440

Lots of things are bad for me.

  5. Fourscore

Tee-totalling ain’t for everyone but hangover free is a great feeling for old guys.

    • ron73440

Until recently when my sinus headaches started flaring up, I was hangover free no matter how much I drank.

My brother-in-law used to hate me because we would drink together, the next day I would be fine while he was hating life.

I always thought if I had hangovers like that, I wouldn’t drink.

    • Gdragon

My delicate GI tract (which coincidentally is currently going haywire) has all but ended my drinking days. I understand why others enjoy it but I really don’t miss it that much.

      • EvilSheldon

Sounds like your GI tract needs a good kicking to toughen it up. I recommend cheeseburgers, cheap bourbon and Lucky Strikes.

      • kinnath

        Heavy, heavy fuel

        tips hat

      • Gdragon

The funniest part about it is that my one friend who believes every new thing that he reads is convinced that I don’t actually have gastroparesis from almost 40 years of type 1 diabetes and I am just “scromiting” like all the kids do these days. 😂

      • ron73440

I am just “scromiting” like all the kids do these days.

        I don’t want to know, do I?

    • Threedoor

I get a hangover for two to three days.

Never having more than two beers prevents getting one.

  6. EvilSheldon

I’m trying really hard to keep from laughing at the #10 incident (because I’ve been there a few times, and it feels exactly the same. Remind me to tell the story about the bachelorette party and the Topton Team 3-Gun Championship from a few years back.)

I’ve also noticed the same thing about Daiquiris (I also make them with rich Demarra syrup, though usually not dark rum) – they go down way too easy. Also Whiskey Sours. The last time I started on the Whiskey Sours at home, I realized around 2am that not only was the bourbon bottle empty, but I’d also used all the eggs that I intended to have for breakfast.

    • ron73440

I used to do things like that all the time, but not when I had to be out of the room at 10.

Being deployed(non-combat) in the Marines meant there were always drinking buddies around and I was easy to convince.

  7. Brochettaward

Look, we’ve tried the whole gender “equality” thing. We gave it our best shot. It’s time to just chain them back up to the stove and be done with it.

Comedy was kind of coming out of its coma. Watch how fast the Shane Gillis backlash ends that shit.

Are we ever going to get a comedy out of Hollywood again before it dies? Probably not. Like even they in all of their delusional pomposity realize that they are incapable of making people laugh anymore. They don’t even try.

    • Brochettaward

And every man under the age of 30? Draft them into the military. Remove all rules about hazing.

Make them men again. Drastic times call for drastic measures.

      • Brochettaward

I’ve held off on doing it because I don’t like fame, but I’m throwing my hat in the ring for 2028.

Country needs clarity. It needs First fueled jizz running through it’s veins again. And I’m the man to do it. This shit isn’t complicated – it’s about will. I’ll truly make America great again. 5 step plan. A 5 minute plan. It’ll be done.

      • Fourscore

DIs and OCS Tac Officers need love too.

      • Threedoor

My experience with the military is that it mostly takes mound men and turns them into soft handed welfare recipients and large government enjoyers.

        Say no to conscription.

    • kinnath

It’s time to just chain them back up to the stove and be done with it.

      Bullshit.

If we had stopped at equal rights, it would have been fine

But we continued off the cliff into special rights for special groups, then crashed and burned when we entered punishment of the privileged.

The correct answer is to teach what equal rights actually means. Equal treatment under the law. Special accommodations is actually a violation of equal rights.

Equal opportunity does not guarantee equal outcomes.

Equal rights do not guarantee equal opportunity.

You’re born; nobody helps; nobody interferes; you get whatever you earn; then you die.

      • PieInTheSky

        good luck teaching all that

      • kinnath

        You have to start somewhere.

      • rhywun

Archie Bunker was griping about this stuff fifty years ago. It’s not going back.

      • kinnath

        Archie Bunker was funny.

      • PieInTheSky

It’s not going back. – depends on the level of the collapse.

      • Fourscore

Kinnath, how did your apple trees do this year?

One of those that I started 5 years ago from seed had about a dozen apples this year. Apples were the size of large cherries, slightly smaller than Whitney crab apples. They tasted OK, would make apple sauce/apple butter if there were more.

I planted 10 more in the garden, someday someone will hate me but at least have apple wood for smoking fish.

      • kinnath

The trees are very, very healthy — and that is a problem. I planted on the root stock and they trees cannot be contained to the trellis system that they are supposed to be growing on. Since they never get to a point where they think they are full grown, they don’t produce apples (or produce only a few).

I think they are unsalvageable at this point. I will probably draft branches onto new dwarfing rootstock next spring, then cut them all down an start over. I would actually have apples in a two or three years instead of maybe never.

      • The Other Kevin

@kinnath that sounds like a parable I read in the Bible.

The owner of the land tended the trees but they produced no fruit. What should he do with those trees?
He should rip them out by the root and burn them!

      • kinnath

        I planted on the wrong rootstock . . . .

      • UnCivilServant

        Applewood smoked bacon?

      • kinnath

There will be a lot of apple wood.

    • EvilSheldon

Instead, may I suggest veiling them and confining them to the Harem?

Trump Accounts – if you have children or grandchildren under 18 I strongly encourage signing-up for Trump accounts. I believe there were millions of automatic enrollments earlier this month, but the accounts must be activated by parents/guardians.

There is a $1000 seed for children born between Jan 1 2025 and Jan 1 2028; the Dell family also added $250 for other age groups.

Accounts are FAR more flexible than a 529 or custodial/minor Roth (which also has income requirements) and at $5000 per year limit a great long-term investment.

    End PSA.

    • R C Dean

From what I can tell, these are a great tool for giving your little crumbcrunchers a financial start in life. Its too bad Trump had to cheapen them by slapping his name on them.

    • Fourscore

How is that any different, say, then just starting a mutual fund account for a kid. Since the kid, in all likelihood, won’t be making enough to pay any income tax anyway?

      • Sensei

Because Michael Dell and the US taxpayers will be creating the initial round of funding and not Grandma and Grandpa directly.

      • Fourscore

In other words Michael Dell and deficit spending.

Grandpa/Grandma would have a vested interest in the kid’s fund and may be inclined to add to it.

      • Sensei

I’ve been assured by all top right thinking (blue leaning) economists that this charitable “crowding out” by government social programs is a myth.

      • RAHeinlein

There are different tax treatments, low expense ratios, and also potential for Roth conversions at 18 (great tax break). More options for use than 529 – which is also a great vehicle for tax-free growth. If the child makes money before age 18 helping them match via a custodial Roth is also a great tax-free growth option (we did this for our boys to incentivize work).

      • Threedoor

I believe the taxes are deferred vs mutual funds which will get hit at the child tax rates.

They will get hit regardless of converted to a Roth when the time comes.

529 Roth conversion is a thing but I think it’s limited so far at the first $35,000. And is also taxed. I’m not totally sure about that.

    • Threedoor

The founder of Dell computer donated $250 each for those accounts as well. I didn’t start
Them for my kids because I hit max gifting already setting up 529s and mutual funds for them. Will be doing it before the end of the year.

Will black people vote for a black Republican for governor? In Florida, probably not, according to what I just read.

Truth, justice and the American Way

Cornell University is suspending parties and other social events at fraternity houses for the rest of the academic year and will give the New York State Police a role in investigating sex crimes on campus, university officials announced Tuesday, amid mounting outrage over its handling of allegations that a female student was sexually assaulted at a fraternity house in 2024.

The measures announced by Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff include a suspension of all parties and social events at Interfraternity Council houses through the end of the 2026-27 academic year and a new “zero tolerance” policy for violations that would result in the immediate emergency suspension of a chapter.

“These measures will provide time for a thorough review of fraternity life at Cornell to determine whether and how it can safely continue,” Kotlikoff wrote in a letter to the campus community.

Collective punishment is a human rights crime. Alert the UN.

  11. The Late P Brooks

Finally a use for a FWD LS!

Not the first or only, but yes, big props for mid engine rear wheel drive sleeper. I doubt it has enough grip to do a wheelie.

  12. The Late P Brooks

The university president said the school would begin conversations with students and faculty experts about “the development of safe social alternatives” to Greek life party culture and invest money to get those initiatives off the ground.

Oddly enough. yesterday I read a guest editorial in the Cornell student paper (I think) about this exact thing. The kid couldn’t quite make the leap to lowering the goddam drinking age, but he talked about how the fraternities had a virtual monopoly on social life. Sororities can’t offer a competing option because they ban alcohol completely.

He also forgot to mention the dozens, if not hundreds, of girls who navigate the party scene without being mass raped.

I’m sure the “safe alternatives” will look a lot like pre school Halloween parties, with juice and doughnuts and “party games”.
