Within a year, Gov. Shapiro, and others like him, will be touting how many good paying union construction and full time jobs have been added due to construction of data centers in their rust belt towns.
Data Centers don’t actually produce that many full time jobs for the locality they’re in. Once construction is complete you only need a small crew to look after the physical maintenance. When something needs to be racked or unracked, a vendor team comes in to do it and then goes off to whatever next location needs their services. All of the electronic jobs are done remotely from anywhere in the world, mostly by cheap foreigners who don’t speak English.
Neither do sports stadiums, but we get sold that bill of goods every time some multi-billionaire investment group wants taxpayers to bankroll their sportsball teams.

There’s affordability to be found if you’re willing to forgo living in a metropolitan city, driving a late model car, having shitty, overpriced fast food delivered by DoorDash 3 times a week.
Also, my dad was 45 before he bought his first house. When he was 25 in 1981, the average 30 year fixed mortgage rate was 16.65%, which made purchasing, how you say, unaffordable.
How about maybe we stop printing money to service our 40 trillion dollar debt and leave interest rates to the market instead of the Fed?

I had been toning down the whole argue on Reddit with little twits thing. I had been there, done that. Wasn’t worth the occasional laugh.
Got myself roped into another today on a sub-Reddit that has nothing to do with politics because these people can’t be anywhere or talk about anything without saying this is why we need single-payer. It’s just the same as the roads don’t ya know. And forget the fact that anyone and everyone has streets in their neighborhood with potholes old enough to vote that no one has fixed. Unless you live where the real money is at.
Never had a Reddit account and I’m not about to start one, but one of my gaming buddies has a running joke where he’ll go to a random non-political subreddit and see how many of the top rated comments are generic OMB NPCs. Without fail at least one of the top 10 comments is some completely off-topic anti-Trump shit.
Reddit can be fun, and occasionally informative. Stay far away from political subs.
On another note, Reddit has seemingly become the go to source for the Google AI. Like you Google something, it’s AI blurb is lifted from fucking Reddit comments.
There actually is some good shit on Reddit that’s hard to find elsewhere. It’s kind of replaced a lot of the old school message boards weirdos would go to for their little niches. Somewhat. But there’s also a lot of horseshit and it’s pretty funny that “AI” from one of our top mega corps is cribbing its answers from there almost entirely.
It’s completely supplanted forums, so when I need actually useful human opinions about anything instead of the 45 pages of AI generated keyword-optimized slop from the major search engines, I’ll use Startpage to search Reddit-only and access the content through Redlib.
Good example. I’m getting ready to paint my place since I had new siding installed. Wanting to compare product lines from Sherwin Williams and Valspar. “Sherwin Williams SuperPaint compare Valspar Duramax” gets you an AI summary along the lines of “Sherwin Williams paints are generally considered premium and more durable than Valspar, while Valspar may be a good budget option.” Yeah, thanks, I never knew that! Perfectly answers my question comparing two very specific products in their respective lineups. The entire first, second, and third pages are the exact same generic shit from a bunch of AI-generated blogs with SEO-optimized URLs like “homeimprovementdiy.com” and 40 Facebook backlinks on each page. Getting more specific with a search like: Valspar compare percent solids Sherwin Williams “superpaint” AND “duramax” turns up zero results. Drop the AND operator and you just get random references to either quoted term. The modern web is absolutely dog shit.

I was able to interact with some pretty big names on a regular basis. People like Bruno from ULA were on there and answered my questions.
A big moment was the crowd that assembled to decode the video from SpaceX first attempt at a soft landing of the F9 in the ocean. Cool people from everywhere collaborated to rescue the signal from the noise.
It had everything X doesnt. It had specificity. A group about succulent houseplants had people talking about succulent houseplants, and not Trump.
And if you were early in a discussion, everyone saw what you had to say. You could contribute.
This contrasts sharply with X (and Twitter before it). I have been the first in on topics that eventually had tens or hundreds of thousands of views and watched as my post only racked up tens of views. Only rarely have thousands seen my posts.
But on reddit I regularly got thousands of likes on a post in a topic that scarcely had more participants than that. Just a totally different dynamic.
But not anymore. Reddit went full communist a couple of elections back. It wrecked the communities I was in. Every topic got hijacked, and only the faithful escaped the redditor ban-hammer.

The modern internet has been completely corporatized. It’s a shell of what it used to be. Places like this – small little self-contained communities – are pretty much gone. Even when you have blogs or forums they’ve become part of some other site that hosts them. Think Reddit or that one blog site people link to on here occasionally.
It’s kind of sad when I look at the set of shared links I have. It’s corporate slop mostly because that’s basically all there is that’s easy to find and access.
And where that mold seems to break is like the dark web. I know it’s not all kiddie porn, but man there’s a lot of kiddie porn. I’m skeptical of claims on that subject, but quick Google says 80% of dark web traffic. Which is sad. Basically the only people looking to escape the watchful eye of big brother want to wank it to illicit shit.

Before Reddit, there was /., a forum for geeks and nerds to argue about things. They had a moderation and meta-moderation system that worked decently for a long time (posts defaulted to starting at 1, could be moderated to a range of -1 to 5), meta-moderation was people who were consistently had their moderations rated as fair to get up into the meta-moderator pool. Both mod points and meta-moderation was assigned as a weighted average.
There were great arguments in the threads with bad faith arguments getting modded down, and good faith arguments getting modded up. Then they changed to comment system to one that hid comments, and wouldn’t display them all. That’s when I left.
Reddit has saved my bacon a couple times on tech questions but yeah AI will get you there without feeling as dirty.

Angel-Owners was a small community site. It got down the point where traffic was non-existent and me and the last remaining US-based Angel master tech were the last 2 sponsoring and running the site, so he shut it down. somewhere around 2012, I want to say. PBNation got passed to 3 or 4 different corporate overlords before ending up in the Verticalscope stable along with a bunch of other niche forums, including a pro-audio forum and automotive forum I used to frequent (can’t remember the names off hand). p8ntballer was sponsored by p8nt magazine. The magazine shut down, and the site re-launched as a small community website. Substantially all the traffic from all those sites ended up on Facebook and Reddit.
The last time I visited PBNation there was a thread up full of people lamenting that forums were dead, and how shitty it is trying to find useful information on the modern web. And yet, does anyone change their habits?

This is why I keep my own blog on my own domain with my own email addresses and my own storefront. The only entities I have to worry about pissing off are Paypal and possibly my webhost, but probably not.

The flow of goods and people across borders has been a point of contention among libertarian thinkers since forever. Even Friedman and Hayek, who both supported completely open borders, had reservations about implementing the policy in the context of a modern welfare state. Libertarianism is Utopian by nature. In strictly economic terms, open borders are a net benefit even if implemented unilaterally, and population would be something pretty close to self-limiting if resources were allocated by the market according to scarcity. The problem is that society is not composed of Homo Economicus any more than it was of New Soviet Man, so even without the market interventions that tamper with resource allocation and destroy the limiting principle, it turns out that culture matters, and it usually takes more than mutual greed to create the social cohesion necessary for libertarianism to flourish.
