I looked into the raw death rates in Canada, they were on an ascent since around 2012, but within the normal range (not above previous levels of the past 50 years) before 2016. MAID was first introduced in 2016 and expanded in 2021. Death rates exceeded previous normal levels (~7.2/1000) and rose as high as 8.7/1000 in 2022 (covid effect?). The data only goes to 2024, but still hasn’t returned to normal levels, but dropped to 7.9/1000.
Based on this first cut there may be something to the claim, certainly worth looking into. I find it hard to believe that there isn’t any effect on aggregate deaths, since the whole point of the program is to make dying easier to do.

RE: flooding at girls camp
Tragic story, looks like they made some serious mistakes, but there will be legal hurdles since another 100 people besides the campers and staff died in the same flooding. Hard to argue they were uniquely negligent when so many other people died as well.
Yeah, I’m not sure I see criminal anything by the people running the camp. In hindsight, sure they could have done better, but by far the best way to avoid what happened would have been to not have the camp at all.
I don’t know how this could have been prevented period. It was a very specific and tragic set of circumstances that happened. I don’t think there is any amount of training or preparation that could have saved them. It was just a freak accident and shouldn’t be criminalized. I’m not an attorney, but I bet I’ve been to traffic court more than anyone here and I can say that most judges I have ever sat before make their dress code clear before you come to the courtroom and the bailiff almost always reminds you again at the courthouse before proceedings begin. Ignore this at your peril. I always wear a suit, because it’s court and you get treated differently by the judge and prosecutor in a suit vs. slacks and a polo.

Considering they were 41-121 two seasons ago, being in the driver’s seat for the playoffs is incredible. I lived through some of the dark years of the Phillies, so I remember what it was like being on the bottom looking ‘way ‘way up.

He mentions multiple warranty replacements on same vehicles. Too much prolonged idling, maybe? Which made me wonder if stop/start could be an issue. Also low rpm operation. Gotta keep the EPA happy.
