IFLA: The “Come Play” Edition of the Horoscope for the Week of October 11

The only major key song in the entire series

The week starts off with a continuation of last week’s Saturn retrograde – Venus retrograde combo of “relationships break” so be careful (unless you’re looking to offload someone). Things should be less precarious by Thursday. On the 16th there should be a major change in leadership or government. There is a conflicting sign about rulers being secure in their power (Mars and Jupiter in Leo) and the moon in Sagittarius suggests that the fall comes suddenly. Perhaps it’s referring to a non-state source of power? We’ll see Saturday. Without suggesting that it’s necessarily involved with either power shifts or relationships ending, there is an indication of venereal disease — but it probably has nothing to do with you in particular unless you’re the kind of person whose sexual health is relevant worldwide. I am not, so I’m safe. Royal astrologers back in the day would have insisted on medical checkups for all the concubines and strongly advised the monarch against strange tail during this time.

Libra: 10 of Cups – Contentment, repose of the entire heart; the perfection of that state; also perfection of human love and friendship.

Scorpio: King of Wands reversed – Good, but severe; austere, yet tolerant. Subject not included.

Sagittarius: The Moon reversed – Instability, inconstancy, silence, lesser degrees of deception and error.

Capricorn: 9 of cups reversed – Truth, loyalty, liberty, mistakes, imperfections, trouble that you can buy your way out of.

Aquarius: 10 of Swords – Betrayal, overwhelming opposition, total defeat, pain, affliction, tears, sadness, desolation.

Pisces: Queen of Cups – Good, fair woman; honest, devoted woman; gift of vision; success, happiness, pleasure; also wisdom, virtue; a perfect spouse and a good mother.

Aries: The blank card.

Taurus: Knight of Swords reversed – Imprudence, incapacity, extravagance.

Gemini: 5 of Cups – Loss, but something remains over; three have been taken, but two are left; it is a card of inheritance, patrimony, transmission, but not corresponding to expectations, also a rough patch in a marriage.

Cancer: Wheel of Fortune – Destiny, fortune, success, elevation, luck, felicity.

Leo: 6 of Swords reversed – Declaration, confession, publicity, a mistake that solves a problem.

Virgo: The Hanged Man reversed – Selfishness, the crowd, body politic.

The Blank Card. That is an improvement from the usual doom and gloom.

    • rhywun

We got that one a few weeks ago too. 🤨

Wait till May or June to plan your Ukraine trip.

Scorpio: King of Wands reversed – Good, but severe; austere, yet tolerant.

Well, Friday is supposedly Boss’s Day, but mine isn’t comfortable getting gifts from his subordinates, so I’m off the hook.

    Seems insufficiently shitty.

“ Cancer: Wheel of Fortune – Destiny, fortune, success, elevation, luck, felicity.”

    Very promising. 🍆💦

  7. The Late P Brooks

    Course correction

Perhaps most importantly, young people are questioning the value of a college education. Those who do opt to pursue a degree have become more discerning in their choice of programs, opting for majors that launch them on a career path.

    ——-

The last decades of the 20th century saw the creation of numerous interdisciplinary programs that began as cooperative ventures between established disciplines and evolved into stand-alone departments with all the attendant costs of maintaining them. Interdisciplinary offerings range from vibrant programs geared to the job market, such as those devoted to “environmental policy” and “health information integration” to purely academic ones such as “cultural, ethnic and gender studies,” which experienced more than a 20 percent decline in enrollment between 2017 and 2025.

    Vibrant programs.

    “What’s your major?”

    “Pre-Barista.”

    • Threedoor

This will only accelerate in the coming years.

Watching the regional news big school districts in Oregon are closing 10-15 schools as a start due to declining enrollment.

When you kill 1:3 pregnancy for the last thirty years you don’t have many kids for the teachers u ions to trans and send to get environmental studies degrees.

    • Michael Malaise

It’s almost as if life is a big pendulum that constantly overcorrects its previous self.

“ Libra: 10 of Cups – Contentment, repose of the entire heart; the perfection of that state; also perfection of human love and friendship.”

        Kinky.

    • Threedoor

I get a list of TicTokers.

And it looks like 90% of them are waiflike chicks.

I could probably take two or three at a time. Even on my surgery recovery gimpyness.

      • PieInTheSky

31 years older that you not younger

    • rhywun

I got Jon Voigt and Christopher Lloyd. Not sure I could take either of them.

As for these guys, yeah Tom will tear that dope apart.

    • Evan from Evansville

Mel Gibson + Larry Bird. Go for broke, unlike y’all beatin’ up on old ladies. (Thought about Tom Hanks, but too easy.)

I might actually have a good time. (To be fair, I’m sure I could party with Martha Stewart.)

    • kinnath

I would enjoy beating the crap out of Gene Shalit

      • Ted S.

Considering he died earlier this year (he did make it to 100), it wouldn’t be that hard.

      • PieInTheSky

already dead but still within the rules.

      • kinnath

AI said he was still alive.

        Running out of prospects.

    • RAHeinlein

Jane Fonda – oh, what I would give to play that one out.

    • Trigger Hippie

      Totally fighting Caitlyn Jenner.

      • juris imprudent

Ha, math sucks. How about William Daniels?

  9. The Late P Brooks

    So who you got

I have seen those Tom Cruise biographical documentaries. He’ll rip Bieber’s leg off and beat him to death with it.

    • PieInTheSky

no the question was which celebrity would you fight

      • Threedoor

If I go up in age it’s a way different crowd.

Stalin’s could probably kick my ass.

But I’ll fight Neil Young and Henry Winkler. Both those guys seem like asses. https://www.famousbirthdays.com/age/80.html

  10. Evan from Evansville

Taurus: Knight of Swords reversed – Imprudence, incapacity, extravagance.
    —
See, I’m not imprudent and i’m more than handi-capable(!), so I’ll focus on the extravagance. Payday on Fri, I’ll get ~$750 for a week’s work after the govt’s cut. (Only paid for one cuz I arrived mid pay-cycle.) That’s over $200 what I made/wk at Walmart a year ago. (My after-tax cut is $10 more than Walmart’s pay BEFORE the cut.)

That’s quite a big step for me. (I am in no way “extravagant.”) I’m to be moved out of The Vault soon for my real gig, auditing the docs I was pulling, filing and organizing. Need be, no shit, I’d work in The Vault if they needed me to. Chill, monotonous, and pretty much paid cuz they could pass a background check and a drug test.

I enjoy watching football but I don’t give a shit, so I await LA v Milwaukee this evening. The Brewers are just damn good, and really, not much flash. Just damn good, and I really don’t think the Dodgers are. Ohtani isn’t hitting at all.

Go ‘small market done right’ teams! Go Brewers, Rays, and even Cleveland! (Extra root for Chase DeLauter)

    • Threedoor

Treat yourself to a 20oz coffee and a sausage and egg sandwich at Starbucks. That’ll eat up your extra $10.

      • Evan from Evansville

I don’t pay for coffee. I don’t drink coffee. Why would anyone go to Starbucks? Oh, in Korea they had a decent breakfast sandwich. Decent, as in “Western.” Overpriced and silly, but available when needed.

Why the fuck do people love coffee so much? It SMELLS lovely, yes. It doesn’t taste bad, but I find no point to it. I will pay for unsweet iced tea (w extra lemon), or UCS will pay for me(!), but coffee… uh? *shrug* You do you.

People are strange creatures. (See also: Me.) I don’t really care about food, though I enjoy cooking when the time calls for it. Calories in, calories out, but everyone seems to ‘care’ so much and are so picky. I find it really, really silly, but better than that, the natural development of a prosperous culture where people have had generations of abundance to ‘allow’ the time for people to begin to have ‘preferences.’ Two seconds later, they get very snippy about OTHER people’s preferences, and oh(!), how wrong everyone else is!

      • Ted S.

Why the fuck do people love coffee so much?

        Because we have good taste.

      • UnCivilServant

Ted, your brazen obvious counterfactual is stunning (and brave)

      • Ted S.

We also have excellent taste in music.

      • Evan from Evansville

        “Because we have good taste.”

Citation needed. I feel the same about wine, btw, perhaps to a more extreme level, but I’ve never had a nice glass of wine. Grapes suck and fermented raisin juice doesn’t sweeten the deal. That’s why it’s great for Mass, etc, as an example to remember how/why God hates you and has you on tenterhooks to behave, to remind you to be cautious.

“Remember that good other good booze ya have at home? Taste this. If you act up, I’ll take that other shit away. You don’t want that, now do you? Repent.”

Truthful: Let’s say I were to get executed. My last meal would be a Turkey Original (jalepeno cheese bread, no tomato) and BBQ chicken pizza from Schlotzky’s, which no longer exists. I remain confident in this decision.

  11. The Late P Brooks

no the question was which celebrity would you fight

The pool of 100 year old “celebrities is not very deep.

    • Threedoor

You get Mel Brooks and Dick Ban Dyke. Narrated by David Attenborough.

      • Ted S.

        Lee Grant.

  12. The Late P Brooks

    Democracy lies in ruins

President Donald Trump putting election denier Harmeet Dhillon in charge of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division clearly meant that what’s been called the “crown jewel” of the department would be tarnished during this administration. Dhillon’s reported inability to recruit legal talent has only underscored the division’s sharp decline. The division’s weakening is particularly troubling ahead of the midterm elections, given the outsize role the Civil Rights Division has long played in preventing Election Day shenanigans.

    ——-

The New York Times reported this week that 130 lawyers have rushed in to fill the void and that some of the new hires have “education and work histories that might have disqualified them from being hired in the past” and others who have “left a trail of hyperpartisan, conspiratorial and, in some instances, bizarre statements” in their wake over the years.

Dhillon has a spin for that, too. “For years, the civil rights division recruited from a narrow pipeline of progressive activists and called it excellence,” she said in a statement to the Times. She insisted that the lawyers she has hired have “the experience this division needs to enforce civil rights laws for every American.”

The Civil Rights Division is no longer a dumping ground for lefty Ivy League ideologues? Boo hoo.

    • rhywun

      “hyperpartisan”

      Heavens to Betsy.

      • juris imprudent

As opposed to “normal” partisan, i.e. Democrats.

  13. The Late P Brooks

    Heeeeere, kitty kitty kitty

A man died Saturday after he entered the tiger enclosure at a wildlife park in northern England and was attacked by one of the animals, police said.

Emergency medical personnel responded to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park near the city of Doncaster after the incident was reported at about 1:35 p.m., but the victim died at the scene, South Yorkshire Police said in a statement.

The tiger was not injured and remained inside the enclosure during the incident, the force said.

And they all (mostly) lived happily ever after.

    • rhywun

They better not assassinate the kitty.

      • Evan from Evansville

        Was thinkin’ the same.

    • Gender Traitor

He must not have stopped petting the cat exactly when it had had enough.

      • rhywun

        lol

  14. The Late P Brooks

Jane Fonda – oh, what I would give to play that one out.

*hunts under couch cushions for quatloos*

  15. The Late P Brooks

Why the fuck do people love coffee so much?

Why do people eat pea soup?

    • Threedoor

Because it brown, warm, earthy and wet.

      • UnCivilServant

Your descriptor sounds like warm mud.

      • Threedoor

Mud is gritty and not pleasant at all to eat.

      • Trigger Hippie

Brown? Da fuk kinda peas are you eating?

      • Evan from Evansville

Make it pink and you’re gettin’ into my bunk…

(Well. Not YOU. (Or anyone, sadly. But ya get my drift.)

      • UnCivilServant

@TH – I assumed he overcooked the crap out of it.

    • Evan from Evansville

Split pea soup with bacon is delicious. Simple food. Not too many flavors to drown each other out. Everyone seems to always want to ‘Add! Add! ADD!’ and it distracts the actual taste.

Theory: I’m one of those ‘super-tasters’ and don’t like complicated food all running together. After pineapple and a breakfast/med shake, I’m munching on sour Skittles and individual, un-milked Fruit Loops to keep my stomach busy before dinner. Mom went camping w Colin and the 3 boys (13, 11, 6) last night, SiL did not attend. Keeping myself hungry for when she comes back and we get dinner.

Family frequently asks where I’d like to go eat or what I’m in the mood for: “Something caloric,” is a go-to answer. I’ll find *something* I can eat anywhere, I just don’t really care. I don’t have many favorite foods, but I do have staples I know I’ll enjoy and keep ’em around so I always have something to nibble on.

    • rhywun

      sociopath psychopath

      • Trigger Hippie

Oh, he probably was a sociopath too.

  16. The Late P Brooks

his neighbors – who ought to know – said he was a violent sociopath who threatened them with a machete on at least one occasion. But the smug shits who don’t have to live with the consequences of their policies couldn’t care less.

One of our more colorful local characters.
