Thursday Morning Links

The Brewers are on the brink of a World Series. And a sweep of the Dodgers, no less. The Indians and Devil Rays will play game 3 tonight. There wasn’t much else going on yesterday in American sports, Across the pond, Man City got doubled up by PSG, Liverpool doubled up LASK, Real beat Roma, Stuttgart won at Bratislava on a field that was beat to death by Enrique Iglesias fans, and Bodo Glimt beat Dortmund. And that’s it for sports.

What did they expect to happen? The company has said all along that they weren’t to be used to make war with. Meanwhile, Rico Suave is a fan of more war.

Here’s the good kind of fascism, I guess. This is in no way a surprise. And neither is the cheering it on from the left.

Sounds like a successful canary trap. Just need to wait and see who gets fired.

Wait, he was personally supposed to handle it? Sounds like they don’t want any kind of due process. And first of all, this should have only been handled by law enforcement. Second, the school has a Title IX department that did its job. The people complaining should talk to them.

They’ll find a way to keep her out of office. By hook or by crook. Because it’s what they do.

Hey, whatever works. Although I don’t want to go to the gym and see a bunch of boners.

This will be interesting, though probably not highly covered in a session full of other big cases. I don’t see how it won’t be 9-0 since the word “tape” is right there in the law. But it’ll probably be 6-3 because three of the justices are mentally retarded.

LOL, this guy is great. We should grant him asylum after he’s found guilty.

They need to criminally charge the staffers. That would accelerate things and I have no doubt a couple of them would rapidly seek immunity for their testimony. I was on the fence before on whether they’d actually do anything about this, but now I’m thinking they’re going all the way with this one.

I respect her for sticking to her principles. The “blood on my hands” is a bit over the top, but she has a point. Good for her.

Gotta love that voice. Such a weird guy with weird lyrics, but such great songs. Here’s another one. Enjoy them both.

And enjoy this lovely Thursday, dear friends.

As long as it is only bad people who deserve it it is ok.

I blame out of control libertarianism leading to gambling legalization

    • rhywun

It should be legal but I am disgusted how every team, league, and I guess now broadcaster is balls-deep in gambling. How is that not a conflict of interest?!

I may be getting my own desk spot on a 3-5 person ‘bench’ today. Didn’t get to do too much shadowing yesterday, but I have done the actual process before. Just gotta have access to Workbench to do it myself, and learn how the system is kinda laid out, all the steps, etc.

It’s a ridiculously easy gig, though nothing was wrong w any of the VIN + lien/etc docs when I was shadowing. The 60/hr –> 220/hr doc quota makes absolute sense. Each one is a 10sec process max if nothing is amiss. It’s Lucy in the chocolate factory, but much easier, no melting, and.. just… ridiculous. Not in a bad way, but it’s kinda like putting in individual slips into pre-baked fortune cookies, but with important docs.

This is very bizarre. I don’t this to be my ‘destination’ job, but I’ll def see how it goes for now and make bank, considerably more than any gig I’ve had in the last four years. It’s the same as the Peru Tribune, oddly, at $40k/yr, but hourly. Absolutely a place to make money and save, and *possibly* room for upward advance, but others in the gig don’t seem to want to move up. My trainer’s been there for 4 years in the same gig, mostly 40s-50s black ladies, but not all. I’m again the only dude in this role! (Ha!)

Onward and up, folk. Be good and well. (Don’t do anything *I* wouldn’t do, which… well. That advice doesn’t help much, does it?)

      • Evan from Evansville

Yep, far away from the one cutie. Grrrg.

Unpopular opinion; No one – literally not a soul – actually enjoys the taste of beer. Not a single human. Those who claim to enjoy beer, don’t actually. It’s really just a social ritual, a form of self deception… the impact of decades of stacked marketing to convince you that beer is anything but an alcohol delivery mechanism. You can enjoy getting sloshed. You can enjoy the social liberation that alcohol offers. You can enjoy the party. But don’t act like you actually like the taste of beer. You don’t. You might think you do. But you don’t. Because it tastes like it looks: bitter dehydrated piss, with bubbles. In the case of Guinness, like diarrhea, with bubbles. And you know it.

The Muslim Greens have produced a guide on ‘Islamophobia’ that decrees it racist to question the Koran, to criticise Islam’s treatment of women and to hold Green Party events at the pub. Literally anything can be ‘Islamophobic’ now, says Heydon Prowse

    https://www.spiked-online.com/2026/10/14/literally-anything-can-be-islamophobic-in-green-la-la-land/

    3) Saying that Islam isn’t a massive fan of the gays

Not a single Muslim country in the world permits or recognises same-sex marriage or lets gay couples adopt. But according to the Muslim Greens, this is all the fault of the Brits.

The guidance says: ‘Queerphobic legislation in many Muslim-majority countries is deeply tied to colonialism.’ Apparently, the British Empire made them do it and has forced them to continue doing it enthusiastically ever since.

    • rhywun

“Racist” is just the new Worst Thing Ever that is convenient to apply to the rest of the world when what they really mean is “heretical” or some similar word which is how they have justified the centuries of slaughter and conquest that their faith demands of them.

      • rhywun

Research published in peer-reviewed academic journals shows that regions in proximity to ancient pre-Islamic trade routes are systematically more likely to be Muslim today, a finding that demonstrates how commerce, not conquest, was the primary mechanism of Islam’s global spread, particularly in Africa and Asia.

I don’t see how that “demonstrates” that at all. If anything, “conquest” would be easier along trade routes.

      • Nephilium

They really don’t understand that real racism is going to come back a lot worse than what it was before, do they?

As far as I can tell she’s guilty of immigration fraud three times over.

    1. She was 18 or over.
    2. Her father was ineligible for refugee status under the perpetrator clause.
    3. He lied about his name.

If they revoke her citizenship, she becomes a resident. She should lose her House seat (if they follow the law), but it would still take years to deport her.

I doubt she’ll face Minnesota charges for marrying her obviously gay brother, because Minnesota.

    • UnCivilServant

I’m pretty sure denaturalization leads to deportation, not mere resident status.

      • Common Tater

IAAINAL, after losing citizenship she would revert to her previous status, then after her residency is revoked, she can appeal, after the appeal fails, she gets to apply for a visa, then after her visa application is denied, she can appeal because physically present, then after her appeal is rejected, there is a deportation order, which she can appeal although by then her only right is habeas corpus, then after that appeal is rejected, ERO might get around to deporting her….

      • UnCivilServant

        I’m not so sure.

Maybe that was just my neighborhood, but WTF?

  19. EvilSheldon

    Good morning all!

From the DedThred (because snakes are my second favorite topic in the world, just behind shooting):

I’ve heard that the little [rattlesnakes] are dangerous because they can’t regulate the amount of venom they inject when they bite. The older ones can, and can even “dry bite” without venom.

Also a myth. All venomous snakes have complete control over injecting their venom, right from birth or hatching. The only exceptions would be some of the rear-fanged snakes where the venom component is literally their saliva, but those snakes generally aren’t a health threat to humans.

Statistically, across the board, a bite from a venomous snake is about 30% likely to be a dry bite.

Is that a tall tale they’re vibrating?

    Usually it’s a long tail. 😉😉😉

    • UnCivilServant

In the “I want to share this neat fact” rather than “well acktchually”

Snakes have short tails and long bodies. Tails are defined as not containing vital organs. So the snake tail is from vent to tip, and is a small portion of the length, as much of it contains various organs.

      • EvilSheldon

        This is true.

Also with many snakes, it’s possible to get a good idea of the sex by looking at the length of the tail. Long thicc tapered tails are usually male (the tail needs room to contain the hemipenes), while shorter skinny tails are usually female.

This probably only matters to breeders, and possibly the snakes themselves.

    Question for the fermenters:

I tried this, and it says “zero sugar” on the can:

    https://shopciders.com/orchard_hill_cider_mill/bone_dry_hard_cider_51430

Is it actually possible to ferment out all the sugars from your starting juice/mash? It’s not my favorite but I do like it. The local brewpub makes a “dry” but not this dry cider that also has a very pronounced tartness which this is missing. I’m assuming that’s a product ot the apples though and not the process.

    • Nephilium

It’s possible, it requires robust yeast and low starting sugars. I’ve had a couple of beers ferment to below 1.000 SG. I don’t believe apples contain any unfermentable sugars (unlike malt), so I can believe it’s possible.

    • kinnath

em>Is it actually possible to ferment out all the sugars from your starting juice/mash?

Yes. It is very easy with almost any wine yeast which will ferment until all the sugar is gone assuming you don’t hit the alcohol tolerance.

Even high-sugar apples can only produce about 9% ABV. Pretty much all wine yeasts have an alcohol tolerance of at least 12% ABV.

This is fundamentally different that beer/ale yeasts which attenuate — meaning they consume most, but not all of the available sugar. Different beer/ale yeasts attenuate at different levels. Carefully selecting your yeast is one of the ways that you manage the sweetness level of the final beer/ale.

“The alleged assault at UChicago took place in the early hours of Sunday during a rowdy party at the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity house in Hyde Park, The New York Times reported.

The woman, 21, was not a student of the university but attended the party alongside her pal Mia Lara, 21, and another friend after seeing it advertised on the frat’s Instagram…

After searching the house, Lara found a small group of men cheering outside a locked bathroom door in the basement, “saying things like, ‘When’s it my turn?’ and ‘I want to go in there’” she told the Times….

The university said Tuesday it had identified a “person of interest” in the assault who has since been banned from campus.

Chicago police said they are investigating the sexual assault accusations and confirmed the victim went to the hospital for treatment. No arrests had been made as of Wednesday evening.”

until the shit hits the fan here due to the repercussions at least.

    • UnCivilServant

What my reaction has been is tentatively hopeful. It’s disruptive enough that France could change course and begin exporting the invasive migrants (or sending them on speed dates with Madame Guillotine) and recover from it’s century of socialistic malaise.

We look at America as a friend

I doubt many of those protesters do. And a lot of your governments don’t, either.

    • bacon-magic

His friend forgot all the support “Je Suis Charlie” had. We supported them when they could have extinguished the dumpster fire before it even started. Instead they doubled down.

    • kinnath

Well . . . if anyone deserves it, it’s the French.

    • Gender Traitor

We look at America as a friend deep pockets and/or muscle when we need it and as unsophisticated rubes the rest of the time.

      What’s French for “FTFY”?

Today I learned a new Americanese word

Acroamatic is an adjective that means esoteric, abstruse, or communicated orally to a select, initiated group of listeners rather than published or shared publicly

    • EvilSheldon

As opposed to achromatic, which means, ‘without color.’

      I love English!

    • Not Adahn

Who told you the secret word? Only those of the third circle are supposed to know this!

      • Common Tater

Acroamatic isn’t a secret word, secret words are acroamatic.

      • The Last American Hero

And those in the third circle are supposed to know that you do NOT talk about the third circle outside of conclave.

    • UnCivilServant

They never cite a single actual case because it never happens.

The only time one might be denied emergency medical care is if you are being violent towards paramedics/nurses/orderlies because they would be unable to actually administer anything.

A woman with either a medically hazardous pregnancy or a botched coathanger job would be treated.

      • Nephilium

The name of the girl was… Jane Doe.

And now you know, the REST of the story.

        Good day!

Analysis (about a 15 minute long video) of escalating attacks on shipping by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz. The last half of the video is talking about the economics of increasing freight rates. Before the war, about $3 of the cost of a barrel of oil was transport costs. Now? $30.

    • rhywun

The Dems are gonna pound that home.

Which is amusing because higher energy prices are exactly what they promise in every other situation.

      • creech

Of course they’ll pound it home. And when the Dems take control, and energy prices remain elevated due to Dem policies, do you really think the Republicans will be able to make a case that Dems are to blame? The Dems and their media enablers will be successfully running against Trump long after he’s croaked.

    • Not Adahn

Supposedly she planned this out sufficiently that she drained hubby’s 401(k) to pay for the pre-stabbing vacation.

      • EvilSheldon

My first thought when I saw this story yesterday was, “She probably murdered them to get out of paying for three weeks at Great Wolf Lodge.” Those places are seriously expensive.

    • The Last American Hero

This story is Sad but True and the perp will no doubt be Unforgiven. That will teach you to Seek and Destroy.

      • ron73440

She committed a lot of Damage Inc.

I hope she killed the quickly and it wasn’t a Creeping Death.

She should Ride the Lightning and then this whole thing can Fade to Black.

Yes, 911? What is the right vein for ending my life? I want to be Bleeding Me.

      • UnCivilServant

If she was serious about getting help with canadian healthcare from 911 she should have said “Hey, I’ve strapped myself with bombs and I’m going to walk into a police station to blow up as many of you pigs as I can.” They’d have PAiD her quickly.

Time for more screeching from the usual suspects

Michael Desronvil, the lone holdout juror who wanted to convict Massachusetts mother Lindsay Clancy of murder in the deaths of her three children, sat down for his first television interview since the jury deadlocked.

In an interview with Fox News’ Kayleigh McEnany, Desronvil said he had no reasonable doubt, despite claims from other members of the jury.

“I had a lot of evidence to back up my claim, but out of respect for the other jurors and the court system, I will put that to sleep for now until they go through the process of the court system,” Desronvil said.

    • rhywun

That guy should just keep his trap shut. Why give the lunatic hysterics any more ammo to go after him and his family?

On X this week, I’ve noticed that all of the former and current reason staff are out in force supporting the Ukraine war with various propaganda tweets. Today it was Robbie Suave and Kathy Young, among others, decrying Elon Musk’s throttling of starlink, which disrupted Ukraine drone strikes on Russian assets. Unfortunately for them and the Wall Street Journal, it seems that this is not true. The service in question as was also reported by Wall Street Journal is starshield, which is operated and controlled by the US government.

How does this work? What is the command and control for all of these various press operatives to sing from the same song book. Even when it is wrong.

Amazing that Reason has been mobilized in support of US involvement in a foreign war.

What is going on here? Up is down. Left is right…

Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together… mass hysteria!

      • rhywun

Zelensky has already agreed to a ceasefire

        OK, then.

Yeah, I did not have Reason going neo-con on my bingo card.

Jonathan Ferguson looks at the history of DOPE (data on previous engagements). He finds evidence that is a backronym. It originally came into shooting from horse racing in the early 20th century and was not originally an acronym.

In the category of “brains are weird”

When some devices make certain sounds, my brain will often anticipate the response noise when I do something.

On boot, my old AnyCubic 3D printer plays a few musical tones. My new Prusa does not. Yet when I power on the Prusa, my brain remembers and anticipates the AnyCubic “3D Printer is powering on” jingle.

“Demand for the ‘anti-Mar-a-Lago’ face is rising.

The cosmetic trend, which stands in direct contrast with the infamous MAGA makeover, is defined as being ‘anti-obvious plastic surgery.’

Dr Melinda Lacerna Kimbrell, a double board-certified plastic surgeon and owner of LA Plastic Surgery, previously told the Daily Mail that the most important feature of the ‘anti-Mar-a-Lago’ face is that the person remains recognizable….

Behavioral scientist and social psychologist Jordan Bridger told the Daily Mail that the ‘anti-Mar-a-Lago’ face is ‘less about beauty than about group signaling.’

‘Faces work as quick identity badges. When one look becomes tied to a particular crowd, people who do not want to be read as part of that crowd start to drift the other way, toward softer, more “undone” looks.”

Last night I watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It’s on Prime. Much to my surprise, it did not completely suck, unlike most of That preening nitwit Tarantino’s later stuff. Not on my 500 best movies ever made list, but I never felt the need to hit the kill switch.
