Friday Morning Links

Well, not morning where I am, but still…

The Bears took down the Patriots. Lebron makes it all about Lebron (and Trump plays right into him). One fewer undefeated G6 team is out there after last night when App State beat JMU and paved the way for Boise into the playoffs, barring an upset down the road. And “everything is Nazi-coded” is alive and well in retard-land. I got nothing else with sports today.

So they just upheld a state law? I don’t see a problem here. But of course the SC’s resident idiot did in her dissent.

Yeah, these things happen. Nobody is above the law. Especially when they’re so brazen with their corruption.

Yeah, you might want to keep a lower profile next time, dumbass. Hopefully he spends a few years in prison before being sent home.

You get what you vote for. Enjoy the suck, New Yorkers.

And this is before the Steelers fans even show up. Arm up, Frenchies. It’s gonna be a long weekend.

This dude needs to calm down. A night or two in the slammer would be a nice start. Plus, he should be out of a job.

Well it’s about time. The 2A isn’t just about guns.

Keep going east. Farther. Farther. A little bit farther. Now turn south. There you go. You’re (back) home.

Shut the entire program down. It’s clear now that it’s nothing but fraud after fraud after fraud.

The headline doesn’t match the story. Which, I’m 100% sure, is by design.

Somewhat by request. And I’m happy to oblige. And here’s another lovely little tune. Enjoy them both.

And enjoy this lovely weekend, dear friends.

Ilhan Omar is a fake name?

      • UnCivilServant

Well, it’s not her birth name. Just one assumed to defraud the refugee system (not that we should have been taking in somali refugees.)

  2. Ted S.

This dude needs to calm down.

Sounds like everyone in that story is an asshole.

    • sloopyinca

Sure. But it’s the job of one person in the story to tolerate assholes rather than go berserk.

I guarantee you it was not the people on the shale who voted to ban its fracking.

    We need to nuke downstate.

Update D’s vote for the free shit. Downstate D’s vote for unicorns and rainbows.

But yeah, the R’s would win upstate without downstate.

When I saw the NY pic on the home page I thought it was Binghamton – been there many times and the appearance of abandoned ghost town is exactly the same.

      • AlexinCT

You are at the mercy of a bunch of luxury belief holding fools and useless people told they deserve participation trophies and to have great self esteem for doing nothing?

      • rhywun

Fortunately I don’t live in upstate NY anymore.

Unfortunately, I live in NJ but so far it’s not so bad. Interestingly, I just got an email from my electricity provider noting that our electricity is sourced from PA gas. I have a strong feeling that NY doesn’t do that.

I swear I’ve read this in a previous Friday links.

“We built a brand new state-of-the-art, $20 million 911 center, a new Sheriff’s center, new veterans center and a $4 million historically accurate copper roof on our courthouse,” McLinko bragged.”

Unless this story ends with the taxpayers stringing up McLinko and the rest of the people who pissed away their money on that nonsense I’m going to be upset.

    *Keeps reading*

    • sloopyinca

I never understood why municipal “leaders” don’t get strung up when they spend ridiculous sums of money on new buildings when there are empty strip malls and malls all over the place.

Why not just put the new 911 center at a closed down Sears?

      • Trigger Hippie

“Bradford County now treats its fracking sludge locally. McLinko said they’ve had no issues with groundwater contamination and the gas companies have put hundreds of millions of dollars into improving the roads. Until last year, he said, the county had not raised taxes in over 20 years.”

And there it is. Despite having such a windfall of revenue they pissed away enough money that they still decided to raise everyone’s taxes.

      • Nephilium

I can nearly guarantee there’s an open call center somewhere nearby.

      • Threedoor

Buying out the 99 year Sears lease could be more expensive.

But the KMart next door is available.

I’m baffled. If this is serious Protest! why are they taking weekdays off?

    • R C Dean

The article makes it pretty clear that by “getting armed”, they mean buying pepper spray. Sad.

      • rhywun

Something tells me that pepper spray is not an effective defense against molotov cocktails or bricks.

SF man operating self-driving Tesla hits, kills pedestrian on I-80, CHP says

I’m surprised they didn’t find a way to shoehorn Elon’s name in there.

      • R C Dean

There used to be a legal doctrine called “assumption of the risk”, meaning that if you did something obviously dangerous, you could sue anybody after the “find out” phase.

      • R C Dean

Make that “you could NOT sue anybody”, etc.

      • rhywun

I can maybe see someone walking down the shoulder (but that is usually prohibited) but this guy was crossing the road?!

      • Ted S.

        I think you mean “couldn’t”?

      • sloopyinca

        He was clearly committing suicide.

      • UnCivilServant

The Tesla’s dash camera, which captured the crash, showed the pedestrian walking onto the freeway from the right shoulder while the car was traveling at 70 mph, CHP said.

The pedestrian, a 71-year-old man from Vallejo, stepped “directly into the path of the Tesla,” according to CHP, as he crossed the highway toward the center divide. Though the dash camera footage reviewed by officers showed the Tesla braking as it steered to the left, the right side of the car struck the pedestrian, CHP said.

So, the machine is not at fault. Dude stepped out into a freeway, became road pizza. Foreseeable consequences of his actions. the machine even tried to avoid him.

      • rhywun

        He was clearly committing suicide.

        Ah. Perhaps.

      • Rat on a train

        Trying to catch a chicken?

      • DrOtto

Also, unless the Tesla was sliding, which I doubt, the right side didn’t strike the “pedestrian”, the “pedestrian” struck the car. There is a difference.

      • Threedoor

Peds on the interstate at all is a no go.

It’s legal to hitch hike in OR on the interstate but remains stupid and I haven’t seen any of them for a long time. Last batch I saw I picked up and that was over twenty years ago.

    • DrOtto

I wish they would have called it by it’s full name “Tesla, the company of which is run by the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, who also bought X, formerly known as Twitter.”

    • R.J.

Whenever a Tesla has an accident, Elon personally flies out to the site and lays a white glove with an “E.M.” embroidered on it on top of the bloodied bodies.

  11. Not Adahn

I am NOT saying the weed-granny politico benefitted from this particular program.

But let’s think about this. If you’re going to give priority in pot shop licenses to previous drug convicts, who have experience with/contacts in illegal distribution and sales, give them a legal supply, but make it more expensive to sell it legally than illegally, what exactly do you think is going to happen?

    • rhywun

give priority in pot shop licenses to previous drug convicts

I wonder who came up with that bright idea – seems like every jurisdiction is doing the same.

It’s like the government partnering with alcohol or nicotine cartels… oh.

      • Not Adahn

I can get behind the concept of benefitting the people that were screwed over by the previous unjust law, but it doesn’t make sense to try and staff a hyper-regulated oligopoly with people who are demonstrably willing to disregard regulations, then incentivize them to do so.

The only way that could possibly work it to make it cheaper and easier to sell legally, and that’s in direct opposition to the “control everything” mindset.

Omar, who was born in Somalia and is a naturalized U.S. citizen

    For now, anyway.

Just wondering — would it take a criminal conviction to get Omar deported, or would a civil finding of immigration fraud be enough for Rubio to de-naturalize her and send her packing?

    • Not Adahn

Denaturalizing her would disenfranchise all the BIPOCs who voted for her, and is therefore a violation of the CRA.

      /judge

      • (((Jarflax

As a compromise we could send them to Somalia with her so they can continue their support. I’d even be willing to give them a relocation package as long as the relinquished any possible return.

Jonathan Alan Lefman, 48, was found guilty after a three-day jury trial of sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl seated in front of him on a Boston-bound flight from Puerto Rico on Aug. 30, 2024, the US Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts announced on Thursday.

Hey NA, how’s it going playing Fallout 4? Did you warm up to it yet? Did you find the indoor gun range in the vault?

    • Ownbestenemy

Indoor gun range in what vault?

      • UnCivilServant

The one where they were raising child supersoldiers.

      • Ownbestenemy

        Ah ya

    • UnCivilServant

      Oh, that range.

I almost forgot about it after getting a fastest time first go round.

    • Not Adahn

I haven’t played it since I posted about it. I only get about an hour of free time between “dog has been walked, petted fed, and content” and “time to sleep.” However, this weekend has no shooting matches and once the leaves are mulched I should be able to reapproach.

By Vault, do you mean Vault 111? There was definitely a master-level lock blocking access to some sort of freeze gun. Right now I think I have one lead on where my kid is and one quest to approach a neighboring settlement to make a trade alliance or something.

      • UnCivilServant

There are multiple vaults on the map.

      • Sean

Different vault. Scored range. I think you’ll be amused.

      • Not Adahn

I haven’t found any of them yet. I’m pretty conservative in my exploration, clearing out the closest map locations on my way to main quest hubs. So I’ve cleared a gas station, a quarry, a railroad depot and a car factory in addition to what I’m assuming are set pieces like the Minutemen museum, suburb/settlement. I’m also assuming I’ll need to revisit some of these places since there were apparentl pointless building in some of these locations.

        I metagame like a mofo.

      • UnCivilServant

Yes, you’ll be back to some of them.

Fair warning – locations will eventually be repopulated.

      • Not Adahn

        I assumed so, ’cause Skyrim.

Alas the stealth sniper option doesn’t seem to be as OP in FO4.

      • UnCivilServant

I’ve found you can get effective in several different build philosophies. So they improved the balance between build options a bit.

      • R C Dean

Yeah, it takes awhile to level up enough to start getting access to rifles that make sniping worthwhile.

I would suggest a few mods: one is the unofficial patch, to help debug the game. Why Bugthesda doesn’t include this in an update/patch of its own, I have no idea. The other is a workshop patch (SKK Workshop Ownership Utilities) to help with settlements when you start building them out. I also used Settlement Electricity Wireless to avoid the tedious wiring up of settlements. Scrap Everything is also handy, but it conflicts with some of the expansion pack zones and has to be disabled for a couple of them.

Bugthesda, Allah bless them, makes modding pretty easy by having it available for direct download through their website.

      • Not Adahn

        I will check those out.

I assume since they’re hosted by Bethesda they won’t also add dicks to everything (looking at you, BG3)

      • UnCivilServant

I’m sure there are mods for that too.

      • R C Dean

I probably ran a dozen or so mods last time I played FO4. There’s one where you can travel with Dogmeat and a companion (Everyone’s Best Friend, which also needs a patch to play nice with the unofficial bug patch), which I liked. If you like building out settlements, Snap ‘n Build is a nice one. There’s a few others.

      • UnCivilServant

Last time I played fallout 4 I had to troubleshoot my modlist…

Dear God, I had way too many mods to check against the latest update. So many “Toggle this off and see if the crash goes away” incidents…

    • Not Adahn

Is the appearance of the settlement something you need to micromanage (like WoW) or is it more a customizable template (like Skyrim?) I see there are defenses that are built, should these be placed in sensible locations or will I need to see where attackers come from first, or is it completely random?

      • Ownbestenemy

Depends on the level you want to micromanage really. Enemy spawns are set, so place defenses where you think and after a few attacks adjust to their spawn points. If I remember right.

      • UnCivilServant

        Micromanage.

There are certain attack routes that bad guys tend to take. Different for each settlement location, but should be easy to suss out. Sanctuary has two approaches used – the bridge and the road towards the vault. Red Rocket mostly has attacks coming over the hill to the east, etc.

      • Sean

Depends on how involved you want to be with the settlements. Some people obsess, some don’t bother. I lean towards to obsess side.

Settlements have fixed spawn points if you want to maximize defenses. I typically go for realism/aesthetics.

      • UnCivilServant

The defensive wall I build at Red Rocket every time is just funny. I build a raised platform, a row of turrets, another floor, a row of turrets…

Watching a wave of super mutants get mowed down by automated defense without me even drawing a gun in funny.

      • Rat on a train

I walled my settlements and used fences to create kill zones I covered with defenses.

      • Not Adahn

My cheat when playing Dune 2 was just dropping a quad of rocket turrets anywhere an enemy showed up and never having to deal with that location ever agian. It even worked on Sandworms!

      • Threedoor

I’ve been meaning to get fallout four and the upgraded Skyrim.

      • Sean

$9.99 on Steam for the GOTY FO4, but that expires in like an hour.

    • Not Adahn

Speaking of games and not having time to play them, my former stripper roomate reached out asking if I was going to be playing WoW Forever. Apparently her husband is in the Beta. My current plan is “no,” since it seems to be a return to the more obsessive style of play that I just don’t have time for anymore. Retail you can play in 30-60 minute chunks and advance your toons.

      • UnCivilServant

When I think about whether I’d play that, I remember why I left the first time around.

        I just wasn’t having fun.

      • Not Adahn

One of the things I always disliked about CRPGs was building up a character, winning the game, then starting over from scratch. I loved the Xeen games because they let you avoid that fate for a few iterations. MMOs where your work never gets discarded is like catnip to me.

      • UnCivilServant

What I remember as the moment of realization was running through quests on the other side of the gate. New Expasion! New Zones! New Monsters! Still getting tasked with “Kill Monster Z to collect Item Y until you have X of them”. I logged out in the middle of a mildly forested part of Draenor and that’s where I left it.

The games I have a lot of hours in do have that replayability aspect. Makes it easier to go back.

      • Not Adahn

That’s true, and that’s why (for me) since the “do quests/kill monsters” is repetitive it’s important that the location be one where I want to spend time in and the narrative link for said quests/monster killing makes (good) sense. Pandaland was gorgeous. Swamps and cataclysm zones sucked. Maze zones absolutely suck, since I play games to have freedom. WoW doesn’t really have those, but LOTRO does. LOTRO tried to get around the grindiness of killing monsters by giving benefits to killing in different ways/attack combos, but eventually you do all of those.

      • Ownbestenemy

Ill probably play Forever. Supposed to be slower paced, no one left behind but we know that is BS.

New players get steamrolled through dungeons cause of min/max and everyone knows the mechanics. So its not enjoyable.

  18. Ownbestenemy

The notion that “the price of gasoline” will drive someone to a different political party is so insane, that just highlights oh terrible the electorate is.

I like to remind people that the vast majority of our communists are idiots that never read any of the commie authors, got the talking points from the commies teaching in the public school systems, and fell for the idiotic lie communism will let them do nothing while getting free shit. People that read that shit break down 50-50 into those that do not understand they are just selling you a much worse system with new feudal lords that want to make sure you can’t do to them what they did to those they deposed, and those that understand this and want to kill commies for their mommies. And yes, there are those that go into politics selling this shit, cause they want to be the new feudal lords.

  20. Grumbletarian

So this ad with Amy Acton’s mother. It doesn’t mention any alleged sexual assault, it just points out that Acton’s mother doesn’t trust her and wouldn’t vote for her. A viewer would have to know about the alleged assault through some other means than the ad itself, and then connect the dots to believe that’s what the mother is talking about. And then you should be outraged at the ad and Vivek, and you should assume the allegations are true.

    Did I get that right?

    • Common Tater

I don’t think anyone ran the ad. I think Vivek campaign sent out a text to a bunch of their supporters to see what they thought.

    • EvilSheldon

Do you really think that Acton and her simps aren’t actively exploiting this opening, positioning Acton as the brave victim and Vivek as a horrible bully?

And the sexual abuse allegations, while not proven in a court of law, are credible and well-documented.

I am assuming that anyone that would fall for the Acton campaign’s victimhood cosplay now already was voting democrat. I doubt people not voting democrat would give a fuck about some incompetent white Karen whining about how she should be elected governor because victim.

Politics is dirty work. But for some reason the media is always and only complaining about when team red does things. We had a democrat senator tell people when democrats get power back they will target and punish anyone that is even remotely associated with MAGA or thinking of doing so. Where is the massive outrage about that shit?

She did go to the cops at some point, seemingly after her biological father got custody, and an arrest warrant was issued for Acton’s step-father. Her mother apparently fled the state with the step-father, and he died before the warrant was ever served.

      • EvilSheldon

We had a democrat senator tell people when democrats get power back they will target and punish anyone that is even remotely associated with MAGA or thinking of doing so. Where is the massive outrage about that shit?

It’s all over the right-leaning parts of the internet. Right where you’d expect.

I agree, but that doesn’t make her accusations credible. She wouldn’t have been the first bratty pre-teen to try to sabotage a marriage.

It is unwise to assume either outcome with a lack of evidence.

And yes, the left is desperate to take advantage of this. Which is why I refuse to be outraged.

On the topic of video games, I’ve seen a lot of people whining about the closure of BioWare.

But what I’m also seeing is these people acting like the team that got laid off was the core team from the company’s glory days.

I’m sorry, but the Saudis just sacked the Veilguard team. The people from Prime BioWare were long gone before the sale of EA. The IP isn’t gone and can be handed to competent teams in the future, but the Veilguard team won’t be shitting on it anymore.

Just got the first quote on powder coating the old bike $350 for a fancy prismatic color and clear coat.

    It’s only money.

    • R.J.

If that includes them doing a full surface prep and pockmark fill it is worth it.

      • kinnath

I stripped off the old rustoleum paint, but they will still prep the surface before they do anything.

      • R.J.

Yes. Powder coating requires extra surface prep and sometimes smoothing of chip marks, sharp weld spots, etc… it should look better than when it was new.

      • kinnath

I am excited to see the final finish.

    • RAHeinlein

I’m enjoying the bike posts (so is my spouse who used an opening for an hour-long discussion of his bicycle history 🙂 Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Next post is being drafted at home.

    • R C Dean

That’s not terrible, if, as noted, it includes full prep. Which it should – nobody should be charging to paint anything without doing the prep right.

    • ron73440

      That’s not a bad price.

      • kinnath

        Seems reasonable to me.

Of course, I am still recovering from the sticker shock of new-old-stock replacement parts for components that have no modern equivalent.

So, as more and more of these revelations come out, are people gonna ask why the media couldn’t investigate and report on this shit years ago? And would a republican engaged in this fraud have been given a pass by both government and media for this long? I mean this idiot from Somalia didn’t lay low and do her fraudulent criminal shit on the down-low: she was front and center, screaming and acting the America hating and wanting to destroy our republic (fuck idiots that say democracy), fool, and they all cheered her on.

At this point even democrats know tat the democrat party and the institutions the left controls are a cabal of crime syndicates. They just don’t care because they are in on the scams, and profiting from it. People keep being shown how much fraud permeates our welfare system – at the Fed and state level – and none of these team blue voters demands hangings, guillotines, and wood chippers? No, they double down on giving democrats power and persecuting those that dared or in the future, might dare, to expose the fraud. That’s because they all are profiting from the fraud and not the victims of it. That’s you and me law abiding tax payers…. What a maroon, they say when they see us follow the rules.

“A Florida rapper who murdered his pregnant girlfriend and her unborn child is begging a judge to sign off on his execution.

Billy Adams III, a 28-year-old rapper known as Ace Nh, gunned down Alana Sims, 22, in 2023 — as she was on her way to celebrate his acquittal days earlier in a separate double-murder case, according to WTSP-TV.

He killed her because he wasn’t ready to be a father to her unborn child, who also died — and later turned out not to be his.”

    • R.J.

Florida rappers are always in trouble. It seems like a subset of Florida Man. I had to ask Brave about it:

It is not possible to provide an exact count of how many Florida rappers go to jail, as there is no official registry for all artists from the state, and legal statuses change frequently. However, several prominent Florida rappers have been incarcerated or are currently serving time for various charges.

      Currently Incarcerated or High-Profile Cases:

YNW Melly (Jamell Demons): Incarcerated since February 2019 in Broward County Jail, charged with two counts of premeditated first-degree murder for the 2018 killings of his bandmates.
He is awaiting a retrial scheduled for January 2027.

Kodak Black (Bill Kordae): Has a history of incarceration, including time in federal prison for false statements regarding gun possession (sentence commuted in 2021). He was arrested again in May 2026 on drug trafficking charges.

Ace NH (Billy Adams III): A Tampa rapper convicted of killing his pregnant girlfriend and her unborn child in January 2023. He is awaiting sentencing in December 2026, having requested the death penalty for the unborn child’s death.

Casanova: Sentenced to 15.6 years in prison for racketeering and narcotics charges related to gang activity in Florida.

Other Notable Mentions: Rappers such as Luh Ben (locked down for 14 months as of early 2024) and various local artists arrested in large-scale Florida RICO busts are frequently cited in reports of Florida rappers facing jail time.

My Engineering Specs to revitalize the competition –

      Must have four wheels.
The four wheels must touch the ground at the same time
No other parts of the vehcile may touch the ground intentionally.
Must fit in bounding box (maximum dimensions).
Must not weigh more than X so our safety barriers can arrest its momentum when it slams into them at high speed.
Must not be designed to intentionally damage other vehicles in the race.
Features to reduce driver fatalities are recommended but not mandated.

      • UnCivilServant

According to my model, my model is correct

Blistering record heat in Europe this summer helped kill more than 50,000 people, with nearly two-thirds of that death toll blamed on human-caused climate change, a new study found.

Researchers modeled heat-related deaths for different age groups in 854 European cities during repeated heat waves in June, July and August and found that 50,391 people died from warmer temperatures, and of those, 32,619 died because of the extra heat caused by the burning of coal, oil and gas, according to a study in an upcoming issue of Nature Health.

That’s 71% higher than the previous deadliest summer, which was 29,480 in 2022, according to the same researchers, who produced a study earlier this month tracking yearly summer heat-related deaths in those European cities. And this summer’s death figures are underestimates because they don’t count a deadly heat wave in May and they only look at deaths in those 854 cities, which are about 40% of Europe’s population, study authors said.

“If you find that insufficiently terrifying, we can pull some more, even bigger, numbers out of our ass.”

    • rhywun

I’d settle for the slightest shred of evidence for “human-caused climate change” except, well, there isn’t any. But keep beating that drum, DNC.

  34. The Late P Brooks

The team used an established and accepted scientific method to figure out how many of the 50,000 heat deaths were from natural high summer heat and how many were due to what heat-trapping gases have done to the climate. They ran computer simulations of a world without climate change and compared it to the deaths that happened this summer. The difference is what was caused by global warming.

    *outright prolonged laughter*

    Practical science

Colossal Biosciences’ Ben Lamm and Anduril’s Palmer Luckey had an idea to genetically engineer war dogs for the U.S. military, law enforcement, and other emergency response teams. On Thursday, that idea came out of stealth as Warhound, backed by $200 million in funding from investors including Sequoia, 8VC, Corner Ventures, and In-Q-Tel, a venture firm backed by the CIA and other U.S. intelligence agencies. The round values the company at $1.2 billion.

Warhound’s dogs, which do not exist yet, will take on tasks that are dangerous for humans or difficult for machines, such as bomb detection, searches, and other specialized operations. In its launch announcement, the company said that more than 80% of the U.S. military’s working dogs come from Europe, and less than half of them are fit for service.
