Monday Afternoon Links

They are everywhere.

Winter is fast approaching. That means I can’t go anywhere in my neighborhood without lots of squirrels darting across the road, sidewalk or whatever. They are lucky I tend not to be in a hurry these days…

Anyways, here are some links for ya.

  • I guess promising utopia and most definitely not delivering doesn’t help.
  • This keeps going on.
  • OK, maybe I shouldn’t complain about the squirrels.
  • Hey?!

You all will ave to do the music today.

Comments are open and yours.

Since these are Swiss links – Let me add a few.

“As we’ve made repeatedly clear, Ben & Jerry’s is not for sale and, more importantly, is thriving as part of The Magnum Ice Cream Company,” a company spokeswoman said. She added that separating the brand ”would drive significant dis-synergies, investment in the social mission would fall, and selling prices per unit would inflate.”

Ben & Jerry’s Founders Have Been Exploring Deal With KKR Executive

They don’t quite seem to grasp that once you sell something you don’t have control over it.

    • rhywun

      drive significant dis-synergies

      🙄

I wonder if they state the “social mission” anymore without using the words “Jew”, “Israel”, or “Zionism”.

When asked about their views of the DSA, 56% of respondents indicated they had an unfavorable view, up from 50% in September, according to Americans for Prosperity’s latest “Americans Unscripted” report.

Nearly 60% also felt the Democratic Party was controlled by the far left, again up from 50% in September, and 82% indicated they favor personal freedom and free markets over government control.

Those people are enemies of democracy. Nobody cares what they think.

    • EvilSheldon

“…and 82% indicated they favor personal freedom and free markets over government control.”

Sure. They favor personal freedoms that they approve of, and free markets that produce the outcomes they think they deserve.

Or, if you prefer, “Money talks, bullshit walks.”

      • Rat on a train

I’m all for free speech but …

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

And the Dems have a (checks various sources) 65% chance of taking all three houses next month!

      • R C Dean

        We’re up to three now?

      • Threedoor

        There are at least five.

    • Rat on a train

The don’t like the DSA. Think Democrats are controlled by the DSA. But trust the Democrats more than Republicans on cost of living …

European automakers are getting desperate – just received a message from Volvo offering to fly us to Sweden with hotel, tour factory, get our Volvo and they will deliver to US location. If it was a better time of year for a visit I’d consider it since the XC90 is on my list.

    • Tonio

Not just automakers. My social media feed is lousy with ads from Viking cruises offering deep discounts on itineraries involving France. This is significant because I have never been on a cruise. They are getting ratioed in the comments but somehow manage to suppress the snarky ones so you have to click-through to “all comments.”

    • Playa Manhattan

I rented an XC90 plug-in this summer in Colorado. Full tank of gas, but the charge was completely drained when I picked it up.

After going over the continental divide, I rode the brake downhill for about 10 miles and got some charge, and after that…. wow.

(supposedly it’s always supposed to have charge in reserve, but I didn’t notice)

    • R C Dean

We came within a hair of getting a Volvo last time we bought a car. With that package, I just might have done it.

    • EvilSheldon

Pity I’m not a North Carolina resident, or I’d vote for this dude twice.

    • kinnath

I can no longer tell when X accounts are “real” and when they are parodies.

      • DEG

        Local news covers

A North Carolina political candidate was arrested Monday following a standoff with Cary police — the culmination of an incident that started with threats on social media and included calls to WRAL to tell his side of the story.

Jonathan D. Miller, the Libertarian Party nominee for a state Senate seat covering much of Cary and other parts of western Wake County, was arrested about 3 p.m. after a long standoff with police near Cary’s Lochmere neighborhood. Resurrection Lutheran School, a private school near the standoff location, was in a code yellow lockdown part of Monday.

Miller’s account on X, formerly known as Twitter, had posted a number of messages on social media Sunday night and throughout the day Monday. The posts spoke of feeling suicidal and included apparent references to seeking gun battles with the police.

      • Brochettaward

Like did he do anything besides threaten to harm himself which really is no business of the state to begin with? Probably hit him with making terroristic threats for saying he’d harm himself.

      • slumbrew

        Not far from my brother.

He then said he doubted he’d get adequate treatment in a hospital. “If I go to the hospital, I’ll spend approximately 15 to 30 seconds every day with a doctor, and that’ll be my time to talk it out,” Miller told WRAL. “He’ll write me a [prescription] for a drug that doesn’t help, and in a few days I’ll be right back where I’m at now.”

        I can’t say he’s wrong.

    • Brochettaward

People are pretty fucking dumb. But I don’t want to hear the people who voted for the likes of the last four presidents talking about serious candidates or ideas. Like fuck you people. You’ve brought us the idiocracy.

  4. The Late P Brooks

Sometimes threats and intimidation are used to protect democracy, and that’s good

Oil companies will “be held accountable” if they import any barrels of Russian diesel fuel under the deal that President Donald Trump struck with the Kremlin, House Judiciary ranking member Jamie Raskin said in a letter to industry heads Monday.

Raskin (D-Md.), who is expected to head the powerful Judiciary Committee if Democrats win control of the House in next week’s election, is the latest lawmaker to warn the industry against importing or processing any of the Russian fuel that is subject to U.S. sanctions. Trump has faced a wave of bipartisan criticism over his announcement earlier this month that the U.S. would buy Russian diesel in an effort to drive down fuel prices that are currently $2.70 a gallon higher than a year ago.

Raskin sent the letter, a copy of which was obtained by POLITICO, to the heads of industry trade groups American Petroleum Institute and American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers. Another copy went to the head of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

    Nice little industry youse gots….

Flash Force remains the gold standard, but I’ve heard good things about Exsanguin Defense

      • EvilSheldon

I’m more a fan of Admiral Bob’s National Security.

      • Threedoor

I also want muscle and bone lace and some eye upgrades.

    • rhywun

From the party that is running on “affordability”. 🙄

Anyone else catch Obama of all people jawing about high energy prices the other day?!

      • Threedoor

        Energy prices will necessarily skyrocket!

    • rhywun

I want to see Raskin strap on a rifle and go fight for Ukraine.

  5. RAHeinlein

Scott Bessent just dined at the Cheesecake Factory and responded to Obama’s rally remarks:

“This is the man who built a museum that looks like Darth Vader’s tomb… I had a great meal, and I would tell the Martha’s Vineyard set to give it a try”

    • Brochettaward

I like the cheesecake factory. Only a ghoul doesn’t like cheesecake.

      • kinnath

hey, don’t shame the lactose intollerant.

    • EvilSheldon

I haven’t been to Cheesecake Factory in a while – are all the portions still ridiculously huge, and is everything still disgustingly over-spiced?

(Never got their cheesecake. I’m not generally a fan.)

      • Gustave Lytton

And everything except the ketchup and (ironically) cheesecake are scratch made on site.

      • Threedoor

They were the last restaurant o went to that I didn’t feel like I got raped on portions/price.

      • Playa Manhattan

Their menu is longer than the bible, and servers have to try each and every dish so they can answer customer questions.

    • slumbrew

Kids wanting to skip classes?! I never! They must be super-serious.

    • rhywun

They were all immediately suspended, right?

    • Rat on a train

More than two dozen students at Xenia High School walked out of school to protest on Monday.
The students were protesting the removal of a mural of Palestine that a school board member called “too political.”

      Such a small theater group.

      • creech

I wonder how many walked out when the mural was first put up.

      • rhywun

I wonder what the mural stated.

  6. Brochettaward

I was in the mood to get banned from Reddit today so I saw some post about some 11 year old shooting a bunch of people up. You can guess his ethnicity. They were all ranting about how easy it is to get a gun in America.

I said we don’t need gun control. We need common sense black people control.

    • Brochettaward

      Common sense black “youths” control.

I got into it with two black Haitians (it’s almost always Haitians for me frankly) yesterday. The one was like call the cops they all already know me. I said gee what a fucking shock that one is. It’s funny how he thought that’d be a flex to begin with, but he got spitting mad after that and started talking about taking it in the ass. While walking away.

I got one last shot in at the witless duo when I said nah that’s you after a night in county.

    • EvilSheldon

Was this the one in Florida? I think that one was fifteen (but who’s counting?)

12 injuries (one of which was not gunfire-related) and zero bodies does seem to point towards, “Close your eyes, pull out the joint, and start spraying.”

    • Rat on a train

If you want to get banned just use any of the verboten words regardless of context.

      • DrOtto

My favorite is on BMW forums when people want to know want brand wheel bearing to get for their BMWs. The OEM is Fag and the sites typically show it as “F*g bearings”. Silly Germans not knowing naming their company FAG in 1905 would be politically incorrect.

      • Plinker762

Well, cigarettes are bad for you so I can see why they don’t want to advertise them.

  8. Aloysious: Evil Dark Lord of Wonderful Smooches

‘French’ protestors hurt? I have just as much sympathy for them as I do for ours.

    None.

  9. Shpip

You’ve probably seen those cute one-on-one Parent vs. Kid youth football drills. You hand the kid (or the parent) the ball, and their opposite has to tackle them in a confined space. You try to juke them — no fair letting 225 lb Dad bulldoze his sixty-pound kid into pudding.

Apparently, Kenny Powers lined up against his offspring this way, and the results are… I’ll let you be the judge.

    • RAHeinlein

I saw that on X last night and was disturbed – that’s beyond for a parent/adult in my book.

  10. Aloysious: Evil Dark Lord of Wonderful Smooches

That Maryland cow is not nearly as cool and hip and suave as our own COWDOZ.

  11. Aloysious: Evil Dark Lord of Wonderful Smooches

Is the protective programs for the Swiss pension plans full of holes?

  12. JaimeRoberto feckful & gruntled

“Escaped cow runs onto Maryland highway, blocks traffic”

    Traffic was barely moo-ving.

are you saying he cudn’t move very fast?

I went to watch a movie on Tubi, and the two ads before the movie were one anti-Bruce Blakeman ad followed by a pro-Blakeman ad. The first ad break repeated the same two ads.

    • Nephilium

I’m pretty sure I saw an ad for Nexium, the only new anti-motion sickness medicine in some amount of time, at least once every inning (sometimes multiple ones per ad break) during the Indians play off run.

      • Ted S.

The pro-Blakeman ad was AI, since there was a calendar on the fridge that only had six days in the week.

    • RAHeinlein

      Original post was unavailable, but…

      • Gustave Lytton

Think it was the candidate’s stream of consciousness tweets where they were going to off themselves.

    • Sensei

Hoping Team Red does the same ad, but with transfer payments to illegals.

    • Gustave Lytton

I think a good chunk of Americans would be happy straight up carpet bombing Gaza by the US directly if it permanently ended the Pali bullshit.

      • slumbrew

Your ideas intrigue me and I’d like to subscribe to your newsletter.

      • dbleagle

I think you are on to something there G.

But that ad, wow, just wow.

    • Ted S.

And the prize for most anti-semitic ad goes to:

      OMWC?

    • Threedoor

      Can I donate?
      Maybe start offing Saudis too?

“lots of squirrels darting across the road”

Squirrels ’round here are *far* too complacent. I don’t blame ’em. Peabody gave a shit for the first time in ~4 years the other day, but otherwise, meh. They slow-poke their way through our condo-area’s small roundabout. No hustle. Darwin’s been inactive for a few generations, now. Would be easy, ‘good’ eatin’. You’re welcome. (Fuck it, use ’em for bait for that snake in I-forget-whose basement. Make a party out of it.
