Wednesday Morning Links

The Rays avoided the sweep, at least. Nothing else really happening in the USA, aside from the incredible fight on twitter between baseball and cricket fans about which sport is tougher to play. Arsenal were hilariously bounced out of the League Cup by a bottom-of-the-fourth-tier team. And that’s about it for sports.

Well, good. They’re actually following the law as written. Which is making the left very angry. But not angry enough to propose changing the law.

That’s not good. I hope it looks worse than it is, but I doubt it.

I want to believe this. And I do mostly believe the facts being presented. But I wonder if they can get it through the courts and judges who do not seem to care about the law anymore.

What did they expect? Sadly, they’ll just try to elect the same kind of people when they eventually get fed up and go somewhere else.

It’s a good thing it didn’t end in Canada. The government would have told the people they signed up “for life” and their life was technically over and then sent them to a MAID clinic.

This doesn’t surprise me at all. And I bet USAID was somehow funding it.

There’s a lot wrong with this piece. Start with the word “unproven” and go from there.

Well it’s about freaking time. Anybody with kids will welcome this miracle breakthrough.

Welp, looks like they’ll be doing it again in a few months. Unless some shenanigans happen at the last minute, but I don’t see that happening either direction.

Oh, boo hoo. I guess they hate the democratic process when others are allowed to make proposals like them.

I’m back from England, but it’s still on my mind. At least musically. And that’s a good thing. So good. Enjoy them both.

And enjoy this lovely Wednesday, dear friends.

I wanted to put it in there but have it be a news story instead of sports. Then I got wrapped up in other pieces.

What an idiot. Never bend the knee.

    • rhywun

      Heard about that.

Yup – never apologize. Especially to fucking China. And especially for telling the truth.

    • (((Jarflax

      1. never apologize.
      2. apologizing for the ‘sin’ of calling the grand champion murderous dictator a dictator makes you tarded.

      • rhywun

Of course, in his case, there is $$$ to worry about.

    • DrOtto

I honestly can’t imagine having to apologize for making an accurate comment like that. I’d like to believe if I did apologize it would be something along the lines of “my sponsors, who benefit greatly from Chinese slave labor, would like for me to apologize…” and then dump my sponsors.

You’re not supposed to reseal cereal bags, the horde of little monsters will finish off the carb bombs sugar crunch box before it goes stale anyway.

    • Gender Traitor

…until you get the box they begged for, after which they decide they don’t like dried blueberry-flavored marshmallow bits, so you might as well throw it away anyway. 😝️

That sort of behavior risks the belt.

I know the Depression was bad, but I didn’t realize you actually ate the cardboard boxes.

      • R.J.

I shall add it to the list for Gender Traitor

      • DrOtto

With 7 kids, we got sugared cereal so infrequently in our house, we didn’t give a shit, marshmallows were marshmallows and it was a matter of eating it all before the other kids realized what was going on. We mostly got big bags of Ralston brand “puffed wheat” cereal off the bottom shelf at the store. I’m certain it was just rebranded horse food, it was sold in the right quantity for horses. “Now with Ivermectin!”

Speaking of cruises that didn’t go as planned.

I for sure thought the Brewers tying HR was the death knell spell for the Rays, looking good for my (unwanted) sweep prediction. Well? That was a helluva ballgame, really was. Two more before I get my desired Game 7.

The last two days of work have gone shockingly well. It’s just.. chill. Assembly line, scanning and printing labels, putting titles in big FedEx envelopes, then I drop overnight in one tub and the rest in another. They’re giving me a couple months, but 650/day is their goal. IIRC I did 180 yesterday. I did much double-checking all day. Late lunch at ~2 is a great idea. Get the bulk outta the way in one go! Come back from my bullshit ‘meal’ with only ~35% of the day left! (Still gotta figure out 30min lunches, half will include a smoke break. Not thinking of anything easier and cleaner than a couple decently caloric granola bars throughout the day. *shrug* It’ll do, Ev.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Well, that was the best game of the series so far, with the Rays giving it everything, as they finally woke up.

But, seriously, Ashby needs to learn how to put glasses on and not look like a child molester.

      • Evan from Evansville

You’re kinda right about Ashby. He’s been really, really good tho. No way he’s changin’ his jock.

That’s not good. I hope it looks worse than it is, but I doubt it.

After 2 50 dead crashes in a single year… I would be worried about riding the Spanish high speed rail these days.

It seems human error, maybe on two levels. But that train ha no business going at cruising speed.

    • (((Jarflax

Highspeed rail seems like an area where you want Japanese attention to detail, not Spanish mañana with a splash of Inshallah.

    • PieInTheSky

the trains in Spain stay mainly on the rail…. but not enough I guess…

      too soon?

    • PieInTheSky

basically: a signal was faulty, to trains were stopped. to avoid congestion a human decided to tell the trains to start going. One was told, one not. This is the first mistake.

The second seems that when on human override you do not go high speed. But the train on the move did.

      • The Last American Hero

It finally answers how the Trolley Problem would play out in real life.

    • Drake

“The accident involved a train from Spain’s state-owned RENFE company and the private rail company IRYO.”

Two separate companies (one state owned) blasting high speed trains down the same tracks. What could go wrong?

      • PieInTheSky

there are 3 companies on that line

Iryo is the brand of Intermodalidad de Levante S.A., a private high-speed rail operator in Spain. The company is jointly owned by the Italian state-owned railway company Trenitalia, the Spanish regional airline Air Nostrum, and the Spanish infrastructure investment fund Globalvia.

Ouigo España[1] is an open-access operator of high-speed railway services in Spain. It is a subsidiary of SNCF Voyageurs, the French national railway company, and uses its trademark Ouigo.

        and RENFE

so when I visit NYC I should not rent a car? But I heard the subway may be dangerous.

      • PieInTheSky

But most Europeans think it is a must visit! one needs try a real bagel, a real pastrami sandwich, a real pizza. can you get those anywhere else?

      • UnCivilServant

Yes, upstate. Where you can’t get those is NYC. It’s a shithole.

      • Gender Traitor

You might want to stick to corned beef until you know how pastrami will affect you. It gives me a bellyache. 😖️

      • PieInTheSky

we have our own pastrami you know, but it is salt mutton.

Now I want to try that. I don’t think it’s available around here. Not enough Romanians I guess.

      • Not Adahn

NYC is a fabulous city in which to live if you’re sufficiently rich. It might be shitholier than other top-tier cities if you’re poor, but I don’t know if that’s true.

      • Drake

Avoid NYC. Plenty of other places with good delis.

      • Grumbletarian

Agreed. When I drive from Texas to New Hampshire each year I take a wide detour around Philly and NYC.

      • Gender Traitor

I’d consider visiting NYC again if I could be airlifted directly (and gently) down onto the front steps of the Met Museum. I’m not even sure there’s anything on Broadway I’d care to see, except maybe a good revival with a star I particularly like.

      • Nephilium

  6. R C Dean

    I want to believe this.

I’m wondering if the whole married-her-brother thing isn’t a head fake, and the schwerpunkt is going to be how she wet her beak in the massive MN fraud.

    • UnCivilServant

Of course it is. The legal grounds for punishment over the brother marriage is weaker and the evidence subject to interpretation due to Somali recordkeeping being nonexistant. But it does catch the headlines and makes her defend the wrong direction.

      • Common Tater

        DNA?

      • UnCivilServant

DNA can’t prove Mens Rea, so Ilhan would be able to make a court case on being ignorant of their relation.

    • Pope Jimbo

She will walk away from all of this stronger than ever.

Everyone already knows she married her brother and that she enabled tons of fraud. She’s still going to be elected as long as she wants to run.

Her superpower has always been the ability to use the hatred of others to grow her power. The more the normies point out how corrupt she is, the more that the AWFLs in her district love her. You could rid her district of every Somali and she’d still cruise to easy victories.

She’d probably get a higher percentage of the vote in fact. Due to clan rivalries, she probably loses a lot of votes from the other Somali clans. The urban liberals love her to death.

      • Fourscore

I would think the St Louis Parkians would reject her “for reasons”. They seem to be blue , through and through. Once a D, always a D, I guess.

  7. Grummun

      • PieInTheSky

yes. the cereal is added in stages not all at once otherwise the ones at the bottom get soggy.

The same principle as eating cream of vegetable/tomato/mushroom/etc soup with croutons. You don’t add the croutons all at once, 3-4 at a time. Otherwise they absorb the sup and lose crunch.

      • Gender Traitor

@Jar the french onion soup I’ve had did not contain croutons. It did have a lot of cheese. I’ve only really had it at a steakhouse in Indianapolis though.

      • trshmnstr

yes. the cereal is added in stages not all at once otherwise the ones at the bottom get soggy.

All that milk splatter you’re having to clean off your table doesn’t have to happen.

(Hi GT and the rest! Just popping in while the baby is content and I’m waiting for my coffee to brew. All’s going well here, at least as well as it can with an almost 2month old in the house)

      • R C Dean

        You don’t use croutons.

They’re dead easy to make, especially if you have an air fryer. Homemade is worlds better than storebought. A good use of stale bread, too.

But the best are cornbread croutons. You can use storebought cornbread for this; the trick is cornbread that’s not too crumbly. Cut into cubes, toast/brown in the airfryer. Dead easy, and delicious.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

what is teh fixation with crunchy food? this is like wanting the bread crust more than the filling

      • PieInTheSky

the bread crust is indeed the best part of the bread. But you would not know given American bread is garbage.

      • UnCivilServant

My Romanian grandma made the best bread, and yes it had a wonderful crust.

      • UnCivilServant

        wonderful crust

There’s a contradiction in terms. The crust is a necessary evil – a byproduct of production.

      • UnCivilServant

Next you’ll tell me it’s only good when it’s durable enough to serve as tank armor.

      • DrOtto

Grape-Nuts in bowl. Fill to the cereal top with milk. Put bowl in garbage. Make bacon and eggs instead.

      • CatchTheCarp

I worked in a Famous-Barr restaurant during high school, the french onion soup was by far the biggest selling item on the menu. Famous-Barr french onion soup had 2 thin slices of stale french bread floating on top before being covered with grated swiss Gruyere cheese and placed under the broiler. They sold so much soup that it was made daily from scratch in 30 gallon cauldrons.

      Don’t be weird.

    • Pope Jimbo

I haven’t eaten cereal since I moved out after high school.

I only ate it back then to stave off starvation between the end of sportz practice and supper. I never got the appeal of it.

Maybe it was because my mother only bought “healthy” cereals (corn flakes, grape nuts, etc).

      • PieInTheSky

I do not eat traditional cereal currently, but when I did back in school it was milk first.

      • Pope Jimbo

      • DrOtto

It’s not Texas per se, but what the choice was for that seat. The choice was, to re-elect Cornyn, who votes about the same as Talarico-suave would. I wasn’t going to vote for Cornyn and would have just stayed home had he been thr choice. Cornyn rightly got primaried, but by the worst possible choice (there were several others that would have been better and I did vote in the primary this year to try and avoid Paxton), Ken Paxton. So we are left with Paxton or Talarico-suave.

    • DrOtto

He’s pro oil & gas now, I saw it in one of his adds. And the democratic governor candidate is no longer seeking to bring an income tax to Texas that she has been trying to do for years, she also has seen the folly of her ways. It’s true I tells ya!

Well, no, it is not funny, it would be too easy to relieve the dramatic tension by having Abbott explain the actual situation to Costello. One is not wrong to call the whole thing stupid.

Yet there is another reading of the skit which stands at least some chance of being funny, though it is not funny either.

A beer keg from 1978 has resurfaced from the ice of the South Tyrolean Alps after almost fifty years. The discovery was shared on social media by Harpf, a company based in the province of Bolzano that has been producing beverages in South Tyrol for over 140 years: according to their representatives, the container most likely came from the company’s own warehouses. The recovery was carried out by Daniel who, according to the company’s account, found the keg this year in the Zillertal Alps, below the Sasso Nero refuge, at about 3,000 meters above sea level. The container, lost in the 1970s, appeared somewhat dented at the time it was found. Initial reconstructions suggest that it ended up there after falling during a helicopter delivery. Since then, it would have remained lost until its recent discovery. This is still a probable reconstruction, as is the original provenance from Harpf’s warehouses. Once the keg was found, Daniel brought it down to the valley using a cart, according to the company. The beer inside was then tasted by a small group of enthusiasts, who reported that “the beer was still good.”

That’s not good. I hope it looks worse than it is, but I doubt it.

Rail is an obsolete 19th-century technology. Its use cases have largely been overtaken by automobiles and aircraft (20th-century technologies), especially in North America, with exceptions being commuter travel in dense urban corridors and bulk material movement over land.

Even in cases where it is the appropriate technology, it requires a massive thumb on the scale from the state, in the form of subsidies and land expropriation, to make rail work. And there’s no use case for high-speed rail in North America. None.

21st-century technologies, including ride-sharing apps, self-driving cars, drones, and, wait for them, eVTOLs and autonomous small aircraft, will further make rail obsolete.

    • UnCivilServant

Most of what you list as alternatives are not even compeditors. I’m not sure what you think people are using trains for.

    • PieInTheSky

Not really good rail is comfortable and very convenient. No traffic, gets you from downtown to downtown, and a nice bar car goes a long way.

      • Common Tater

It doesn’t damage people afaik, and would cost less fuel than a plane.

      • Chipping Pioneer

It would use more fuel than regular rail, and when it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight, it’s going by air.

    • R C Dean

My understanding is that rail is the most efficient way to move freight, especially bulk cargo. You still need last mile delivery for some/much of it, but for point to point there’s no real competitive alternative.

For that, there’s no need for high-speed rail, which is much more expensive to build and maintain.

      • PieInTheSky

My understanding is that rail is the most efficient way to move freight, especially bulk cargo. – that would be ocean going ships really. though I assume you mean overland.

      • Pope Jimbo

Just got back from a quick trip to Japan/Korea and I have to admit that being able to take trains/subways everywhere was nice. On the other hand, I would not want to live long term in the kind of density that makes those trains/subways viable.

As far as freight goes, the way it is done in the US now is probably as efficient as you can do it. There is a lot of pressure to move goods at the lowest prices. A good friend of mine worked for CSX and they called the transfer of goods from the trains to the trucks their “intermodal” operations. He had a lot of interesting insights into the inflection points of rail vs trucks.

Just as in shipping, the containerization of rail/trucking increased the efficiency of moving goods a lot.

Joseph Downing Barnes Jr., 35, of Virginia Beach, used online video chat sessions to prey on his victims, who were boys between the ages of 10 and 15 years old, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Barnes, a convicted sex offender who self-identifies as a woman, exposed his fake breasts to his victims online in order to get the boys to perform sexually explicit acts on video. This included the boys showing their penises and masturbating on video. Barnes saved the webchats to his Google account after recording them. According to court records, the victims thought Barnes was a biological woman.”

Romanians can’t stop poking fun at the surname of Justyna Pula, who was elected to the position of President of Kosovo two weeks ago.

Below is an article from the website of the news television station Antena 3 (CNN’s partner in Romania), titled: “Neighboring country elects a president whose surname is banned by the CNA (Romania’s equivalent of the National Broadcasting Council).”

Indeed, the media in the Carpathians have a problem with this figure, because her surname—Pula—in colloquial Romanian is simply… a vulgar term for the male genitalia, commonly used as a curse (it’s of course the noun that in Polish is often, and incorrectly, written with just three letters).

Ech! As if the Balkans didn’t cause enough problems for Romanians already! And yet the famous and beautiful Croatian city of Pula was already quite troublesome for them due to its toponymy…

The cruise ship doesnt pass the common sense test.

They say fuel prices are what killed their model.

    But that doesnt make sense.

First fact: they were at about 50% capacity. That sounds way more significant than an increase in fuel costs.

Second fact: they kicked everyone off, and then fueled up and left.

If fuel was the issue, then they would stay anchored somewhere with access to cheap supplies. It isnt really any more fuel efficient to sail with no people than it is to sail with people.

I believe the economic model was nonviable, but their announcement was jist using fuel costs as a convenient cover. No ship sails with that many empty cabins. The fixed costs are too high.

Poison gas is a war crime

Methane is responsible for about a third of planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions, scientists estimate.

Cuts in methane emissions have emerged in recent years as a global priority to slow the rate of climate change. Oil and gas operations are the largest industrial source of methane, which is the main component in natural gas and far more potent to the atmosphere than carbon dioxide in the short term.

The invisible gas leaks from equipment and is released into the atmosphere or burned off as a waste product by oil drillers.

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin previewed the changes last month, saying they would eliminate the agency’s “Super Emitter Program” that requires companies to investigate and repair major methane releases from oil and natural gas facilities. The agency would also set less restrictive standards for small oil and gas wells.

Trump is murdering the planet. Again.

    • rhywun

If these crooks really cared about “healing the planet”, they’d go after China instead of pushing monstrously wasteful incremental changes in the US.

      • cyto

The real problem is all these pipelines people were building.

Good thing they put a stop to that. Pipelines would let them collect and transport the methane. And if they hadn’t blocked those methane liquifaction facilities then they could even sell or store surpluses.

So… great job. Now the methane stays at the well. Where. … uh… they can burn it or just let it escape and collect neither money nor energy. Because…. uh… pipelines and profits are evil.

    • creech

All these “scientists” are the leading proponents of nuclear power, right?

  24. The Late P Brooks

The loosening of the emissions rule comes as Trump and Republicans in Congress have been methodically dismantling climate policies enacted under former President Joe Biden. That’s included the revocation of a scientific finding that was central to U.S. action on greenhouse gas emissions, lower fuel economy standards for vehicles and a move to repeal emission restrictions for coal and natural gas power plants.

Environmental groups said the latest rollback will let companies continue polluting the atmosphere with gas that could be captured and provide energy to millions of households.

    He’s destroying Joe’s legacy!

Also, if capturing all that methane is such a piece of cake why aren’t the envirofantasists getting rich off it?

    • rhywun

That fucking rule was the entire basis of the left’s plot to return the US to something like the level of 18th century standards of living. Every bit of control freakery Thr One and The Two perpetrated on us was dependent on it.

    No harm, no foul

Hutchinson’s testimony, at a surprise hearing announced just 24 hours earlier, was seen at the time as particularly compelling given her proximity to power as special assistant to Mark Meadows, Trump’s chief of staff.

She described an angry, defiant president who was trying to let armed protesters avoid security screenings at a rally that morning to protest his 2020 election defeat and who later grabbed at the steering wheel of the presidential SUV when the Secret Service refused to let him go to the Capitol. And when the events at the Capitol spiraled toward violence, with the crowd chanting “Hang Mike Pence,” she testified that Trump declined to intervene.

Trump at the time denied on his social media platform, Truth Social, much of what Hutchinson said. He called her a “total phony” and “bad news.”

Hutchinson’s description of the altercation inside the presidential SUV was regarded as particularly explosive, even as she acknowledged during her testimony that she was relaying what she had heard from a White House security official and did not have firsthand knowledge of the episode because she was not there.

    Her account was quickly disputed.

Lying under oath is the highest form of patriotism.

    • Common Tater

      J6 lasted around 2 hours.

  26. The Late P Brooks

The U.S. House of Representatives impeached Trump in 2021 on allegations that he incited the mob that attacked the Capitol, but he was later acquitted by the Senate. The Justice Department under Biden charged Trump with felony offenses, accusing him of illegally working to overturn his 2020 election loss in the run-up to the Capitol attack, but then-special counsel Jack Smith abandoned the case after Trump’s 2024 presidential victory. Longstanding Justice Department policy says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution.

If Trump hadn’t won he’d be in jail. What a tragedy.

      • Brochettaward

It’s a lie. There was a porn site out there. Fairly large one with a shit ton of categories of porn on it some of which were kind of borderline. Regardless the site as a whole gets like 60-70 million hits a month.

One category was of woman sleeping and men having sex with them. It wasn’t some popular category, but it existed.

Within that sub-category there was a PRIVATE chatroom of like a thousand men from all over the world who seemed to be exchanging “tips” on how to drug and sleep with woman. None of those messages were released so we have to take their word for it.

How much of any of this was just fantasy and roleplay? No one knows.

But they took the fact that the website as a whole has x number of viewers and pretended as if all of them were in that chatroom exchanging tips on how to rape the women in their lives while they were unconscious.

So something bad may have happened. Something was worth investigating. But the toxic “feminists” online had to lie and exaggerate making the entire argument about the lies and exaggerations rather than whether there were any actual victims.

      • Brochettaward

It’s like taking some of the worst content on Youporn or any other large porn site and accusing every one who goes to the site of not just being a man, but also being a man into that stuff.

It was so intellectually dishonest. And if you said anything on social media the feminists would go the route of saying you must be an abuser yourself. And that the focus shouldn’t be on the magnitude of their dishonesty. The numbers didn’t matter. Which begs the question of why they lied in the first place, don’t it?

They really are the modern day puritans.

    Scurrilous smears

Progressive Twitch streamer Hasan Piker filed a defamation lawsuit against conservative CNN commentator Scott Jennings on Tuesday, accusing him of falsely claiming Piker advocated for lynching Black Americans after airing an edited video of his remarks.

The 38-page lawsuit, filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., centers on an Aug. 11 episode of “The Scott Jennings Show,” in which Jennings shared clips of Piker claiming he had said, “the USA should resume lynchings against Black people.”

Piker, who threatened legal action in August over the claim and shared further context to the clips, alleges Jennings knowingly misrepresented sarcastic comments he made during his livestreams by turning it into an apparent endorsement of racial violence.

He clearly meant to say he wanted to lynch white people.
