Friday Morning Deadline Links

No funny stories happening today, alas, though I’m loaded up with them (starting with my war with a bat, who eventually suffered a Shop Vac execution). But I have deadlines for an article looming and have been heads-down writing and (when realizing that I have some vital data that I need to have things make sense) stopping to run measurements. Since it involves acoustic measurement gear, I also have a large dog in a foul mood from being annoyed by swoops and whoops at high volumes emanating from my media room. Ah well, this is what’s keeping you in kibble.

What IS happening, though, is birthdays, including the guy who couldn’t wait to wipe his ass on the freshly-written Bill of Rights; a guy who cursed- a LOT; a guy who inspired a shitty pop tune; the prime example of disgusting shitheads whose art is undeniable; a guy who figured that “Angelo Siciliano” was not a memorable name; star of the shittiest cult movie ever made; a guy who wasn’t bright but was one helluva badass; a pioneer of TV news people’s incorrect belief that they’re doing something important; the truer version of The Day The Music Died; a brother-in-law of several dummies; one of my teenage fantasy women who was stone cray-cray; the nemesis of Peggy Hill; and a hatchet face who managed to marry a money dude.

I have more of a hatchet mind, so here’s Links.

My apologies for the confusion. When we were debating who sits in for Sloopy/Banjos, I put in a chit for today since I won’t be around for my usual Sunday (up at Prime’s). Somebody mentioned you in passing but was unclear that you were all-in on it. My bad completely.

I got some “pet edition” Shark vacuum. It works remarkably well.

Having said that: I am doing vastly more maintenance on it that I have done on all previously owned vacuums combined. However, it could very well be that I was doing insufficient maintenance on those and also I’ve never allowed a pet indoors especially a Great Pyrenees mix.

      • UnCivilServant

Have you tried just vacuuming the dog?

      • Gender Traitor

My biggest disappointment in a vacuum cleaner was my Dyson, whose standard floor attachment constantly got clogged. I replaced it with a Ryobi, of all things. (I prefer cordless models.) It vacuums the floor without constantly clogging, but I keep the Dyson around because it’s better ergonomically as a hand vac.

      • R.J.

Giant pets with hair can take down any vacuum. At least the Shark is cheap and parts are readily available.
I have the Dyson Pet vacuum, it’s great and lower maintenance than the Shark I had previously. But it was also really expensive and parts are expensive. Still needs maintenance.

      • Not Adahn

One of the really nice things about living here (as opposed to OK and TX) is leaving the doors and windows open. Weather here supports that practice and the almost total absence of insects here means I’m not constantly under invasion if I do.

The upside is that Lily loves being able to go explore/patrol the back yard, sleep in the sun, and come back for pets as she wishes. The downside is every week I can fill the vacuum with the dust she’s brought into the living room.

      • Old Man With Candy

SP bought us a Samsung robot vac some years ago. I took it out of storage, cleaned it up, and let it go. The standoffs between the vac and Kaiser are hilarious.

Unfortunately, I have to empty it out every 15-20 minutes since Kaiser sheds profusely. I guess this is labor saving?

      • ron73440

We have the pet Dyson as well.

Even with a woolly Husky it works well.

        It was pricey though.

      • trshmnstr

All the bagless cordless vacs seem to have a 12-18 month lifespan. Also, theyre never quite the same after a deep clean.

We got a bagless corded vac and it’s already so much better than the cordless. I’m highly tempted to pick up a corded bagged Miele next time woot has it on clearance.

      • rhywun

        corded bagged Miele

I had one of those a while back. Complete piece of junk. YMMV.

Is that mayo in a breakfast burrito?

    • Strange Brew

Why is this mayo so salty?

    • R C Dean

Probably crema, unless its in the Midwest.

      • Old Man With Candy

Or in Glibs Gulch. 50/50 whether people want mayo or ranch in their burritos.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

        then it’s American cheese

      • Not Adahn

There was a French couple running a breakfast stand when I was in college and they put mayo on their breakfast croissant sandwiches.

      • rhywun

        Gross.

        Sour cream or GTFO.

      • Common Tater

None of those things belong in a breakfast burrito. Salsa roja works.

      • rhywun

To be fair, I don’t do “breakfast” burritos.

        I do real burritos.

      • Ownbestenemy

Ugh..mayo isnt bad but the wrong fat for a burrito. Sour cream, crema or guac, otherwise you are just making a wrap, not a burrito.

      • Not Adahn

The best breakfast taco in Austin was Mi Madre’s puerco adobo and avocado. Though Rudy’s brisket, potato and egg was damn tasty too.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

crema would be correct for any Mexican restaurant that is north-central Mexico in origin. Baja, nope.

still gross, jus like mayo is gross, but there is a reason for it (German/Swiss immigration to the plains)

      • Ownbestenemy

All in the eye of the beholder but Bravo Burger in Chino, CA has the best breakfast burrito hands down.

      • Nephilium

        Not Adahn:

I’ve seen that. A local bagel sandwich place does a layer of herb cream cheese on their breakfast sandwiches (on top of a slice of cheese).

      • Not Adahn

My diner has the “college breakfast sandwich.”

Toasted bagel with egg, sausage, American cheese, cream cheese, and Doritos. Not only do they provide crunch and salt (and more cheese) they provide traction keeping the cream cheese side from sliding off the egg.

      • Common Tater

        Does it need more fat?

      • Ownbestenemy

Fat carries the flavors and spices, so yes.

What the article on the Armenian parliament brawl didn’t mention is the reasoning behind the ministry of women’s satisfaction:

      • UnCivilServant

Now are we talking a former ambassador, or a one of the bureaucrats from the State department?

Ambassador appointments tend to be ways of shoving politicians out of the way politely. State Department drones tend to have the same level of mental illness as the bureaucracy at large, and could easily end up on the street.

The world’s thinnest book is ‘Great Jewish Physicists before Einstein.’ Then suddenly Jews absolutely dominated the field. These days, the top people tend to be Indian or Chinese. Re Dune 3 from the dedthred:

at this point in the moves, Chani hasn’t shown any kind of positive emotion towards Paul

Well, she’s played by Zendaya, who as far as I know has never displayed any kind of positive emotion onscreen.

    • Ted S.

I think it was Dorothy Parker who said of Katharine Hepburn, “She runs the gamut of emotions from A to B.”

    • Not Adahn

      Bringing it over:

      Re: Dune 3 final trailer.

It very much implies that instead of Paul wandering off into the desert, Stronk Chani is going to Liberate the Fremen from the Colonialist Oppressor Atreides herself.

There’s a youtuber I enjoy called “Quinn’s Ideas” who is typically good, if a bit basic, but he’s completely huffing the copium with this one. He’s accepting the implication but says it’s fine, this is a new interpretation of Messiah. And worse, he claims it’s going to be a big dramatic moment because “Chani still loves Paul.”

Except… at what point do we have ANY evidence that Chani loves Paul in the first place? Yeah, maybe she’s into twinks, and he’s undoubtedly the only dude in the sietch that she hasn’t already banged if we assume the Tau lore still applies. But beyond a quick roll in the sand? When is that ever on screen? Dennis decided to cut the entire “Paul and Chani fall in love, have a kid, said kid gets murdered by the Harkonnen” plotline so at this point in the moves, Chani hasn’t shown any kind of positive emotion towards Paul, but exactly the opposite. How is this version of Chani going to be so desperate to give Paul kids she goes off into the desert ODs on spice, and conceives pre-born twins?

Which… if Dennis was going to sack up and just end things on a trilogy, he could make a consistent ending with Chani shanking Pretty-boy and have a separate-from-the-books canon. But he puts a (vision?) of the twins in the trainer, which raises the question who is going to bear these twins? An axlotl tank? It sure as fuck ain’t going to be Stronk Chani.

      • ron73440

liked the first Dune and was looking forward to the second.

The bullshit they pulled with Chani’s character had me decide to wait to see the third one once I could watch it at home.

The trailer for the third one has me thinking about not watching it.

It is very well filmed however.

Why is every adaptation written by retards that do not understand the source material?

      • Not Adahn

In Denis’ case, I don’t think it’s not understanding the source material, but rather wanting to use it to tell the story that they in their auteur genius has decided really speaks to today’s zeitgeist and audience.

      • UnCivilServant

The modern audience that the box office indicates either doesn’t exist or doesn’t watch movies, play videogames, or have any disposable income?

      • Ted S.

Because the point is that those icky normies must not have the things they like.

      • ron73440

The modern audience that the box office indicates either doesn’t exist or doesn’t watch movies, play videogames, or have any disposable income?

The Dune movies have been successful I believe.

Odyssey made all of the money and not only butchered the source material, it looked like ass.

      • UnCivilServant

@Ron – The earlier installments were less focused on modern audiences from reports I’ve heard.

I think Odessy mostly rode the director’s reputation

      • juris imprudent

I was wondering where the hell the story was going, since it isn’t really following the book. Typical.

      • ron73440

@Ron – The earlier installments were less focused on modern audiences from reports I’ve heard.

I think Odessy mostly rode the director’s reputation

The first one was really good, it skipped some things, but the only head scratching choice I remember is they made the lead scientist a black woman instead of a man, which didn’t make sense because in the books that scientist is Chani’s father.

That gives Chani a broader perspective being from both worlds, but I guess it was better to just have her scowling at everything.

I think you’re right about the Odyssey, but I was hoping for a much better movie when it was announce Nolan would be making it.
