Good morning one and all to another glorious day!

Some take aways from yesterday. The country didn’t in just two years turn super gay woke Marxist. This was an absolute punishment by the rightwing base to the Republican Party and to Trump. Long term, it will be painful with so many states now under Democrat control. There will be gerrymandering and other long term negative side effects. But there are silver linings, after the 2010 wipeout, the Democrat party lost all their moderates. The party took a far left lurch afterward with the remaining Democrats with political power being from the deepest of blue areas. This election wiped out a lot of moderate Republicans. A lot of moderates who worked hand in hand with Democrats to stop any agenda the right wing base wanted. The remaining Republicans to hold power are from deep red areas. They will be the ones setting the future agenda. Another takeaway is that the public soundly rejected woke Marxism and badly wants economic relief. They will only get misery from their new Marxist overlords. If Republicans can get their act together and put up a populist in 2028, the country will lurch back to the right. But with a new Republican Party. If all that fails, I’ll see you in the gulags. I claim top bunk!

Leaving you with a song. Moving along with my day.

      Not bad, Tres, not bad.

I’d say it was the economic effects of the war.

I would like to believe there are still voters who believe and are willing to vote on “starting was is bad, m’kay?”

      • rhywun

        There it is.

      • Common Tater

There are, but foreign policy isn’t a priority for most people.

I read somewhere R support from Hispanic men dropped 57 points. Don’t know if that’s true, but $7 diesel was huge.

The Trump economy is so bad I can’t afford a working kybard!

You know I always bring the best music links!

    • Urthona

I’d say it was economic stuff mostly before the war.

      • Common Tater

True food prices were up before the war, but the world runs on diesel.

    • R C Dean

I think Trump breaking his promise of “No new wars” played out pretty much the way Bush Sr. breaking his promise of “No new taxes” did.

It sort of crystallized all the frustration with “I’m going to do Good Thing X” followed by Good Thing X not happening. By giving fuel prices a bump, it also revived the Dem’s fading “affordability” push.

      • Common Tater

Otoh, he was saying he would take out Iran since he first came down the escalator.

He did do most of the things he promised. He lowered taxes. Closing the border was huge.

      • juris imprudent

He hasn’t “taken out” Iran because no one in the whole fucking world can do that. You really want to eliminate Iranian government – you conduct a near genocide on the Iranian people. Not that I believe the average Iranian likes his government anymore than I like ours; but you can’t force a compliant regime into existence in a country that isn’t savagely defeated.

    • R C Dean

Oh, and if he was bound and determined to jump Iran (and he’s been saying it needs doing for years), why the fuck couldn’t he wait until after the midterms? Leaving aside whether it was a good idea (and I think there are some points in its favor), the timing could not have been worse.

      • Urthona

Also the way he carries himself about everything.

No plan in Iran given really. Let’s just talk about renaming bodies of water to “America” instead.

Seems to have gotten less cute.

      • ron73440

Even Wilson was smart enough to wait until after he won on a “He kept us out of war” platform to get us into WWI.

      • WTF

I think that right there is an indictment of Trump’s enormous ego. He is genuinely convinced he can do anything at all and everyone will still love him and follow along.
Hopefully the Dems are still too stupid to stroke his ego, otherwise they might cajole him into signing a bunch of their bullshit into law.

      • R C Dean

They were crystal clear on their objectives when it started. They made two massive mistakes, though:

        (1) Once again, in an unbroken streak since WWI, we see that air power alone doesn’t win wars.

        (2) The economic warfare started weak and took way too long to ramp up. It should have been a Day One thing.

      • rhywun

they might cajole him into signing a bunch of their bullshit into law

With 56 senators plus who knows how many fake elephants, they might not have to.

      • Common Tater

The renaming stuff was stupid and annoying. So was going on and on about the ballroom, reflecting pool, etc.

Conquering Persia would have required years of planning he didn’t do. Just securing the Straight of Hormuz is a massive undertaking.

      • WTF

They would need 11 Republicans to defect to override a veto. Still seems unlikely.

My bet is that they haven’t.

    • Drake

It was a whole cocktail of fuckups by Trump and Congressional Republicans.

Boils down to none of them keeping the campaign promises that got them elected.

      • R C Dean

Trump kept two of his promises:

He closed the border, and he is rolling back DEI. Unfortunately, the Epstein clown show sort of set the tone of much of the rest of his administration.

      • Urthona

Guess what Trump was also polling the best on? Those two things.

The strategy for a better midterms was clear but ignored.

      • The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

“The strategy for a better midterms was clear but ignored.”

        This.

The Republicans lost due to unforced errors. They got what they deserved.

  5. Banjos

Some news on the Texas front, the state senate stayed super majority red. It’ll be gridlock for four years. And from what I’m understanding, they’re working to limit some of the powers the state executive has on their way out the door.

    • WTF

Well, it’s good that you’re not completely behind enemy lines now.

    • R.J.

This is good news. Although I question how red those repubs are sometimes.

      • R C Dean

The Texas GOP is rotten with RINOs. Hell, the House speaker, one of the most powerful people in Austin, was a de facto Dem, lining up with them on a bunch of issues.

      • Urthona

        This is an opportunity then.

Texas GOP had gotten fat and corrupt with never losing.

      • R C Dean

The issue in TX is likely to be what it is now in AZ:

With a Democrat Governor, AG, and SecState, the voting machinery is in the hands of the Dems who have shown that they know how to use it in Deep Blue urban areas (and they have them in TX) to ensure they never lose a statewide seat. And there’s no way for the legislature to fix it, with a Dem Governor.

Now, TX may have a big enough margin of Red voters to overcome that, but we may find out the hard way that they do not.

      • Urthona

        Eh.

We will see about this. Seems very pessimistic.

      • R.J.

Agree with Urthona. Historically Texas was a dem state since inception, it was only in recent history that things changed. There is a robust power dynamic now. If anything I think all the lazy a-hole repubs who agree with dems all the time are in jeopardy in the coming years.

      • cyto

        That is exactly the worry.

I witnessed the reverse here in Florida. The urban counties in South Florida ran their elections like the people who moved here from New York ran their elections. They *always* waited until all of the votes in the redt of the state had been reported to begin reporting their results (so the rest of the state would be at 97% to 99% in, while Broward and Palm Beach were at 3% to 8%). And the results often favored democrats… but it was always very close.

Then Rick Scott removed the election officials and replaced them. Magically the next election and every election since, the results have been reported within an hour or two of the polls closing.

And the state-wide results have not been razor thin since. (Although they have been closer than I can explain sometimes).

Arizona definitely saw shennanigans, as did Minnesota (not this election, but in all elections for a couple decades)

Texas is ripe for shenanigans if dems control the machinery. They have many huge cities. The dems have increasingly efficient and effective ways of exploiting that to their advantage.

They had best move quickly to fix any issues they have, because they may not get another chance. See California for a proof of concept.

      • Urthona

It’s definitely worth looking at to see if you can shore up anything in the next few months.

“Another takeaway is that the public soundly rejected woke Marxism and badly wants economic relief.”

That’s half true. A bunch of DSA candidates won.

    • Banjos

As a punishment to Rs. Not because they support them. The proposition measures are telling a different story

      • Common Tater

To me, “soundly rejected woke Marxism” wouldn’t be electing people such as Talarico and El Sayad.

      • WTF

So they punish the Rs by voting into power people who will wreck the economy and happily load them in trains and ship them off to gulags if they had the chance.
Like I said, the average voter is functionally retarded.

      • Not Adahn

When you’re voting anti-(R), does it matter if the (D) on the ballot is endorsed by the DSA? If so, how would you know? AFAIK, none of the candidates were running on a DSA party line.

      • Common Tater

The alternative was for R’s to get involved in primaries and put up better candidates. Mike Rogers, Darlene Graham, etc. were a bunch of neocons.

      • R C Dean

AFAIK, none of the candidates were running on a DSA party line.

Of course not. Spanberger proved (yet again) that you can tell the most obvious lies about how moderate ‘n’ shit you are, and enough voters will lap it up. Even though a modicum of research or thought will show that they are lying their faces off.

How stupid would you have to be to believe that Talarico, for example, somehow sincerely converted from anti-oil, anti-beef, and pro-transing children, to the opposite? Not too stupid to vote, that’s for sure.

      • Not Adahn

Brandon Herrera was as good of a candidate as you could get, and he got drwnned in the blue wave.

Lets not forget the stupid tariffs, which have directly affected several aspects of daily life in both price and availability, none of it in a positive way. High gasoline prices due to the war just magnify those costs. The republicans deserved to get trounced, it’s just unfortunate the only club to be found to hit them over the head with was a democrat branded club. Has anyone ever taxed their way out of a bad economic situation? Because that’s the only trick the dems know.

It’s something the MSM repeatedly fails to explain.

      • Plinker762

Regulatory uncertainty will still come from executive orders and state agencies.

    • Urthona

Yes, US stocks were totally stoked about the slowdown in AI. Makes perfect sense.

      • cyto

The assault on data centers is playing out really strangely.

First, the opposition seems well funded. The real grass roots stuff seems to be centered around power prices. But then they are buying their own gas turbines… which moves it to a noise complaint (which affects exponentially fewer people). Allegations are that foreign actors might be behind much of this opposition (because AI and the relevant infrastructure) could be the way the US maintains the productivity and wealth lead it has.

But then we have Elon. A couple of years ago he started talking about data centers in space. He sounded like a nut if you just read the headline. But if you listened to his explanation, it was all rooted in experience with building data centers. Regulatory hurdles. Supply chain problems with power. Lots of uncertainty.

But with satellites he could control them all. He makes solar panels. So no power issues. No land issues, because no land. And because he has starship, launch costs are not an issue (he and Shotwell have said a starship LEO launch will eventually have internal costs of around a million bucks.

But now he faces internal US political opposition to his very existence. I wonder what they will do?

      • Common Tater

Isn’t cooling things in space a big problem?

      • Ted S.

What’s the physics of heat dissipation in a vacuum?

      • cyto

I have seen the heat issue as a meme. It is actually pretty simple to understand

All of the energy that is going to come to the satellite is coming through the solar panels. Those face the sun.

So that is how much heat they have to dump via radiative cooling.

This is a solved problem. For SpaceX they do this on their 10k starlink satellites already. The ISS does this.

They will have radiators that are big panels like the solar panels, but at right angles. They are edge on to the sun.

And because Starship leaves them with little worries about mass constraints, a big radiator isnt a problem.

      • rhywun

Their spitting hatred of Elon is incredible. They hate him every bit as much as Donald so I hope he’s got a good security detail.

      • cyto

The other key to the radiator is to run it hot. So they use a phase change cooling medium to transfer heat and run the radiators hot.

Since radiative cooling scales as a 4th power law, every 10 degrees they raise the temp reduces the size needed by about 25%

So the radiators are actually smaller than the solar panels.

Being an actress – particularly the “pretty girl” actress must come with crazy pressure. Your entire career depends on never looking anything other than great? Gotta be intense.

However, it does enshittify the parking situation.

We settled on 3 days when many companies were still fully at home. At the time it seemed reasonable compromise to me, but people were not happy.

Long term since we settled early and adapted to it, it remains. However, going to 4 does seem more likely at some point.

I don’t forsee us shifting from 50% soon. The unions and contract negotiations got involved. That drags everything to a halt.

      • rhywun

I think we’re up to 4 days but I’m officially remote now. Which is funny cuz one reason for moving down here was to go back to the office if they demanded it. I had already planned my move when my boss got me remote. I may call it a stretch goal after I get some things taken care of… or I may just stay home for good.

    • UnCivilServant

I have a garage permit, so I can park under the office, even if my garage is a bit of a hike from my cube.

But my parasite union has gotten us stuck at 50/50

“Russell Brand is today facing a lengthy prison sentence after being found guilty of raping one woman and sexually assaulting three others to feed his ‘voracious’ lust….

    2009…

    2004…

    2005…

    2009….

He was cleared by the jury of two counts of rape and one charge of attempted indecent assault….

Detectives believe that his conviction will be a ‘watershed moment’, giving women confidence to come forward.”

Coming forward decades later and only after a bullshit BBC documentary? No idea how anyone could possibly determine what happened 20 years ago.

We will be moving to a new building. Our current setup is open space but split into rooms of 6-8 people with a wall/door separating from the hallway/common areas.

new building we will no longer have a separation from the hallway / common areas for our open space. Fortunately we are not near the main kitchen so less noise and food smells.

There are a total of 6 toilets on the floor I wonder if they are going to be enough for some 100 people.

We will not be going to full time office because as of now there are not enough desks for all the people.

    • PieInTheSky

no wait 12 toilets should be enough, 6 at each end of the building

I just had to move yesterday. Half of my view is now gone and the air here is noticably (to me, not to my boss) stagnant.

      • PieInTheSky

        noticable air is an issue

I am solidly a member of Team Introvert.

Somehow the annual gathering of introverts keeps getting rescheduled at the last minute.

“Samaira, 25, was stabbed to death by her own brother Azhar in their family home in Southall, west London, while her mother watched on, refusing to stop the bloodshed….

In a crime so horrific and brutal it is barely believable in modern-day Britain, this young, talented, articulate graduate with her whole life ahead of her was killed simply ‘for loving the wrong man.’

Samaira, who was working as a director at her brother’s recruitment business, had fallen in love with Salman Mohammed, an Afghan asylum seeker who had arrived in the UK at the back of a lorry…

Salman was seen to be from a ‘lower caste’ to Samaira, who was of Pakistani-descent, and her family believed he was only after their money….

Samaira’s father, also named Azhar, was enraged and threatened Salman with a knife at his workplace, while her brother, who the court heard ‘loved his sister more than anything’, told Salman on a phone call that he would kill them both if they were to get married….

When Samaira refused to back down, the family decided the only way to restore their ‘honour’ was to end her life.”

Euthenize the entire family. And the people they associate with, just to be sure. Social contagions must be reset.

I’ll give that religious culture credit for inventing the zero. But what other positive contribution has islam provided the world in the last 1500 years?
