Links – Thursday Afternoon Variety

Greetings, my fellow Glibertarians. I almost typed that Gibertarians, then wondered if the Butthole Surfers fan club had a faction that call themselves Gibbytarians. Or maybe Giberty is the next stupid mascot Liberty Mutual Insurance will try out. I don’t know. What I do know is that this has been a long week, I wish it was Friday afternoon, and no matter how weird it gets, I’ve got you weirdos to remind me that I’m not being sodomized by inbred Kennedy by-blows in the tunnels beneath the White House.

[EDIT: Apologies for being late, I swear I scheduled it!]

Let’s do some links…

Who brings $40k cash and their real phone to meet a person at a hotel room for a first time? Drug dealers and people paying ransom, but OTHER than that… It was also pointed out that the sex of the suspect wearing a hot pink dress with chest tattoos is not established.

Best to leave before you’re hounded out.

“Congratulations, now you’re definitely going to die of prison.”

She poisoned my curry — Not a euphemism for a lesbian breakup, but should be.

Jesus Christ, this video is like someone compressed the entire 90s MTV experience into a single video

About The Author

Brett L

Brett L

Brett set out to find America, the real America, the America of strip malls and serial killers, of butthole waxing and kelp smoothies, of cocaine and maggots. He sought it in the most American part of America—Florida: swamp gas and fever dreams, where love arrives on a rickety boat and leaves when it doesn't have the money for its fourth abortion. Oh, where has Brett gone? He’s drinking at the neck of America’s wang, chewing its foreskin and working its shaft. Brett is becoming legend. Brett can never die. Brett can never die. Brett is America, facedown in his own patriotic puke: the red his blood, the white his stomach lining, and the cold, cold blue his gas station slushie, spiked with coconut rum and tetracycline.

Kudos on the correct use of “sex”.

You came to Salon for the journalism, the dialogue, the essays, the criticism, the unexpected discoveries and the sense that there was a place on the internet where ideas mattered.

I don’t believe I ever came to Salon for any of those reasons. Mostly it was for trolling and mockery. Mostly.

Same. I see Paglia was at Salon until 2001. I started bouncing around a lot of wingnut sites in that period including NR and FrontPage and eventually landed at TOS and the rest is history.

We were reminded today our self-evaluations (and something else?) are due by the 14th. I have much leeway. I’ll certainly syndergize my adaptability to the persistent changes in division and workflow, but I’ll compliment Dehshay for her Intake training, and I suppose Scott for being good at running the Vault, I suppose, that fabulous him.

I shipped ~360 today, with a couple not-my-fault interruptions. I made today the day to just use the visual color code on the folders at my desk, rather than having them a bit splayed out. I found a nice map of how the property tax cap did in NH. A majority of school districts approved the cap. Approval requires a supermajority of 60%. I found it interesting poking around the map to see how many Democrat dominated towns voted more then 50% but less than 60% on the cap. Concord and Nashua are two of those.

    • RAHeinlein

Am I reading correctly that if passed in a given community the cap will be in-effect?

      • DEG

School district. It has to have a supermajority of 60% in the school district to take effect. It only takes effect for two years and can be overidden by a 60% vote at town election time. It will be on the ballot statewide again in 2028 with same deal: 60% supermajority to take effect, lasts for two years, can be overridden.

Some of the weirdness about how it works and it being temporary had to do with getting it passed. I attended a talk by soon-to-be-former-Rep. Ross Berry who was one of the guys behind the cap. He said the original cap legislation would never have passed because many Republicans would not sign on to it. Those Republicans believed their local school districts that the cap wasn’t necessary and would be destructive. Berry said they watered the cap proposal down, and those Republicans were then willing to give it a try.

I was a little sloppy in my language in my post. NH school districts sometimes span multiple towns. There are also some school districts shared with Maine and Vermont. NH also has School Administrative Units (SAU) which is the administrative part of a school district, and some school districts share SAUs. The town I live in is easy: We have our own school district (no other municipality in it) which has its own SAU.

Thanks, DEG – appreciate the details!

      • Urthona

Yeah, either one of them means you get Florida. So pick the other guy from a different state.

        They say that.

To be honest, I was never a guy who *got* Trump’s charisma, but clearly he has it.

Still, DeSantis has enormous popularity in a state that was formerly purple. Clearly he has some way of winning over people. Maybe out of MAGA’s shadow he will be able to pull together a coalition.

      • juris imprudent

        not so much on charisma

I have two words in response to that:

        Joe

      • Shpip

DeSantis is good on policy, not so much on charisma.

I mentioned this on X yesterday.

TL:DR — Voters want tall, lanky guys who look good in a suit (OMB being the obvious exception).

      • rhywun

never a guy who *got* Trump’s charisma

I get it… he plays the NYC blowhard – a character I know well. He’s even funny now and then but lately it’s just ridiculous.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

he don’t have to out run the bear be charismatic, just be a better choice than the Dem.

      • Threedoor

        Ok I’ll run.

      • R.J.

“Vote for us and we will leave you alone.”

    • Playa Manhattan

One way or another, Trump will make sure that DeSantis doesn’t become president.

      • juris imprudent

I’m sure Trump wants a successor that makes people long for him again. Sadly I don’t think Caligula is available.

      • Gustave Lytton

        Trump endorses Kamala?

      • Playa Manhattan

60%: Trump interferes in the primary and insists on the candidate who will kiss his ass. DeSantis, having dignity, refuses and loses. R candidate gets destroyed in the general.

20%: Trump interferes in the primary and DeSantis plays ball. He gets the nomination but gets destroyed in the general because any Trump candidate is poison.

10%: Trump is not alive in 2028

10%: Trump acts reasonably and his own best interest, realizing that a competent R president will prevent him from being prosecuted and having his Secret Service detail cancelled. He stays out of the primary and general, and DeSantis wins on his own merits. (10% might be too generous here)

    • Shpip

And even on the way out the door, he delivers.

He also kept Florida (of all places) from flipping red by strongarming the legislature to put Amendment 3 on the ballot, bringing voters to the polls who wanted some property tax relief — and consequently voted straight red down the ballot.

Amendment 3 passed, BTW. It triples the homestead exemption for 2027, then quintuples it in 2028 — from 50K now to 250K in ’28. Counties and municipalities will now have to budget just like their citizens do.

      • Shpip

        err… flipping blue

The governor’s and senate races were too close for comfort, but that’s how it went down in the first anti-OMB election down here, too.

People forget that DeSantis barely beat that down-low assclown Andrew Gillum back in ’18.

    Coös County, NH wildfire

Firefighters are working to contain a large wildfire that has been spreading through the White Mountain National Forest since Sunday. Fire officials now say that the fire was likely human caused.

Officials said the steep, rugged terrain is making it difficult to get the fire under control.

“To my knowledge, we’ve never had a fire this size in the White Mountain National Forest,” said Jessie Dubuque of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “So, this is the largest fire. It’s making history.”

The nearly 1,000-acre fire is in a tricky location within the White Mountain National Forest near the border with Maine.

    • Plinker762

A few miles from my dad’s house. As I remember there were large fires in the area around 1900. The area that is burning now was heavily logged in 1890-1910. There was even a narrow gauge logging railroad up the Wild River valley.

  12. The Late P Brooks

Nothing against either of them, but based on history, I’d be shocked if the party ran two Floridians.

Gronkowski didn’t visit NH as part of Turning Point Action’s Get Out The Vote activities

Retired Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has released a statement related to his appearances at polling locations in New Hampshire on Tuesday, saying he is not affiliated with a conservative advocacy group that was bringing celebrities to the polls.

Gronkowski was one of several celebrities spotted by New Hampshire voters at the polls Tuesday.

News 9 confirmed that conservative political advocacy group Turning Point Action brought celebrities to New Hampshire as part of a get-out-the-vote effort. Many Granite Staters reported receiving text messages before Election Day teasing the celebrity visits.

A News 9 viewer shared a photo of Gronkowski outside Bedford High School posing for photos with viewers.

In a social media post, Gronkowski said it was “upsetting and eye opening to see the narratives” around his visit to New Hampshire.

Ross Berry, who was behind the NH property tax cap, opines on the recent election

There is no way to sugarcoat what happened Tuesday night. New Hampshire Republicans got our teeth kicked in. We lost seats, lost colleagues, and watched voters who agreed with us on major policy questions turn around and vote us out of office. I was one of them. After six years serving in the New Hampshire House, including the last two representing Weare and Goffstown, I lost my own reelection bid. It sucks. There is no other way to put it.

Losing is part of politics, and after six years in Concord, I certainly understand that voters have the final say. But losing this badly demands some serious reflection about where our party stands, how voters perceive us, and what we need to do differently. Republicans can either learn from Tuesday’s results or spend the next two years convincing ourselves that nothing needs to change. I have no interest in the latter.

I do not believe Tuesday was a repudiation of conservative policies. In fact, I think the results suggest quite the opposite.

Consider what happened in Goffstown, one of the two towns I represent. Two years ago, I won the town convincingly. This year, 63% of Goffstown voters supported the property tax cap I authored and fought to put on the ballot. Yet I lost my reelection bid in that same town by roughly 900 votes.
I spent two years fighting to give taxpayers more control over their property taxes, delivered the legislation that made it possible, and watched nearly two-thirds of my town support it. Then I got the axe anyway.

    Why?

I believe the answer has less to do with the policies Republicans delivered and more to do with what the Republican Party has come to represent in voters’ minds. The results in Goffstown illustrate a problem that Republicans need to take seriously. Voters can agree with us on major issues, support the legislation we pass, and still decide they do not want us representing them. We cannot simply dismiss that contradiction because we happen to like our own policies.

  15. DEG

And one last “too local news” link from NH, NHJournal’s winners and losers opinion piece

After Tuesday’s blowout election, picking the 2026 winners and losers might look like an easy job: Democrats winners, Republicans losers. Done.

But is that really the accurate picture? For example, did Republicans lose all of the federal races because they were lower-quality candidates? Or because it’s New Hampshire, which doesn’t elect Republicans to federal office?

Did Democrats win a record majority in the New Hampshire House and sweep the Executive Council because of a brilliant strategy boosting quality candidates, or because of the Dem +14 wave?

And then there are the unexpected benefits and unintended consequences of a once-in-a-generation election like this. Sometimes, as that great political philosopher Clint Eastwood said in “Unforgiven,” “deserves got nothing to do with it.”

With all that in mind, here’s NHJournal’s scorecard of winners and losers from Tuesday’s election.
