Saturday evening, it still sucks links

I know of one place where Covid is now endemic. Friggin’ airports.

Not that I have any knowledge whatsoever what the source of my cold symptoms were, while on the east coast. Traveling these days sucks ballz, and I feel for every customer in the cattle section.

S0, 2022 is only a few days old, and it’s already trying to live up to 2021. Let’s take a look!

I can’t condone it…

“Let me tell you ’bout the birds and the bees…”

How about we spend some more time on the killing our enemies part? M’kay?

Ooppies.

Spud’s tater privilege on full display.

“Hercules! Hercules!”

All right you crazy kids, go forth and shitlord.

Miles Davis and Johnn Coltrane? Yes, Please!

The weather had no impact on that column falling. Given enough time mass wasting happens to all geologic formations.* It was just an unfortunate overlap of geologic and human time for those people.

*Otherwise the Appalachian Range would still be as tall as the Himalaya Range and the rocks forming Mt Everest would still be deep under the ocean.

I generally try to watch the first episode of every anime for a given season. With only a handful of exceptions that I can’t actually remember, my rule is never watch any anime that is based on a game. This applies especially any phone based games. I should stick to my rule.

    Girls’ Frontline continues this trend.

The only reason I even tried to watch it was that it has essentially top voice talents that are now past their “sell buy” dates. This means voice actresses that are both older and married and can’t be used on the idol circuit to promote the works they voiced.

Wow was it awful… I’m surprised the the generally woke folk at ANN reviewed it as favorably as they did. If one wishes to see an anime based on anthropomorphic weapons I’d much prefer Upotte!! .

    Bidenomics

But the economy is far from perfect. Biden said “a handful of giant companies” were squeezing out competition and raising prices on consumers, while keeping wages for their workers “unfairly low.” He added that this made Americans pay more for food because larger companies pushed smaller businesses out of the game.

“You’ve heard me say before: Capitalism without competition isn’t capitalism. It’s exploitation,” Biden said. “And I’m determined to end the exploitation.”

    ——-

According to the White House, a smaller number of large companies control more business than they did 20 years ago in over 75% of US industries, and it’s causing prices to surge, while holding back wages for workers in more concentrated markets.

Biden said on Friday he would be meeting with his “competition council” later this month to continue pushing for broad action to increase competition, raise wages, and lower prices for consumers — part of the “three-part plan” he laid out that also includes fixing the supply-chain crisis and lowering food costs.

Despite his issues with big corporations, Biden is continuing to push for the passage of his Build Back Better agenda to further stimulate the economy, and he said that “capitalism is alive and very well” during his July remarks, referencing more jobs and better wages.

We’ll get the Ministry of Plenty to set wages and prices, and allocate resources. We’ll have the economy humming like a finely tuned machine.

Slinky Brits, publishing their series years before I take an interest.

It’s very good. Hugh Laurie is of course excellent. I barely see any Prince Regent in him anymore. And Hiddleston, of course. I can’t take Olivia Colman altogether seriously despite her acting chops on account of Mitchell and Webb, especially because she is once again massively pregnant.

I was once sitting at a table in a pub on which there was a note saying “reserved from 6pm” (it might have been 5pm – I don’t recall) and as the hour drew near and the party entered the pub to take their table, it turned out to include Olivia Coleman. No Mark Corrigan quotes were leveled at her and I left quietly to go watch a movie. I’m not 100% sure but I’m fairly certain it was Thor which puts this in 2011.

        /cool story

      • Animal

My brother is fond of telling the story from the late Seventies, when he was out in Beverly Hills doing a custom cabinet install for some rich guy. On a Saturday, he was out bumming around Hollywood, and went into a little diner to have a sandwich for lunch. After he’d been there a few minutes, this other guy came in and took the stool next to him, ordered a cup of coffee and a sandwich.

This was just after the movie Stripes had come out. My brother looks at the guy, thinks a moment, and says, “Hey, you’re John Larroquette.” They guy said, “Yeah.”

So my bro and John Larroquette sat there, eating and gabbing for about an hour. My brother maintains that, despite his typical characters on-screen, John L. is actually “a pretty cool guy.”

My brother ended up in a hot spring with Chris O’Dowd at a little resort spa in New Mexico. O’Dowd was shooting something here at the time, I forget what. I’d watched IT Crowd with my brother so he knew who he was, but because my brother is a bit of a troll, he didn’t let on he knew. He spent the whole time making fun of Chris O’Dowd’s accent.

My only claim to fame is that I did some work at Bonanza Ranch, where Alec Baldwin totally didn’t murder a woman.

Exceptions to Bragg’s no-jail rule include murder, a crime that involves someone’s death and felonies. Several serious crimes, such as some cases of armed robbery, are being reduced to misdemeanors. Bragg also vows to limit sentences to 20 years, even for murder convictions.

What is the end goal of this stuff, I wonder. It’s obviously not to reduce crime, because we went down this exact same path in the seventies and it had the predictable result of much higher crime and chased more than 800,000 people out of the city between 1970 and 1980.

With modern computers and trading, is there any reason besides history and inertia that financial services firms are located in NYC? Sure, New York was a center of commerce a couple of decades / centuries ago because of its outstanding natural harbor. But how important is that today? What’s the difference if Citi, BoA, Goldman Sachs, et al decamp for Charleston, SC, Naples, FL, or The Woodlands, TX?

      • rhywun

NYC lost many HQ’s to Connecticut et al. from the 70s on. Conditions then were believe it or not much more dire than now.

That was when NYC at least pretended to care about enforcing the law. Now it’s passé. Where do you think the city will be in 2-4 years?

      • Shpip

Imagine Citibank, Chase, or Goldman moving lock, stock, and barrel to another state.

This is what I meant. Apologies if I was unclear on the specifics. Think of say, UBS issuing this press release:

Zürich, Switzerland — UBS AG has announced its movement of its US headquarters of operations to its new corporate campus in Deland, Florida. The move comes the same day as Boston-based Fidelity announced its own move to the nearby town of Deltona.
The anticipated increase in air traffic has already prompted the airports in Sanford and Daytona Beach to upgrade their facilities and capacity.

Suddenly, 100,000 office drones, middle managers, and Big Swinging Dicks get to experience effective raises due to the lack of city and state income taxes, while also getting better weather (YMMV in July / August), lower crime, and the ability to trade a 750 sf apartment for a 2800 sf house with a yard. The BSDs keep their summer houses in the Hamptons for a while before selling them off as they retire to Palm Beach or Naples.

As an added side effect, Stetson University becomes one of the best MBA programs in the country.

      • Gustave Lytton

Suddenly, 100,000 office drones, middle managers, and Big Swinging Dicks get to be uprooted from their friends, community, and children’s schools, and experience effective raises due to salary cuts for locality adjustment despite the lack of city and state income taxes

    Fucking O’Reilly auto parts.

So teens are buying parts they need for the Exploder. Told them they need front struts and rear shock absorber and you should spend about $250.

The manager there took advantage of two dumb ass teens and they sold them the whole assemblies for like 700 bucks.

I say dumb ass teens cause they didn’t stop, think and maybe call and ask does this seem right?

Please don’t be what I think that is.

        Oh thank god.

      • Ted S.

I assume you were expecting this?

      • rhywun

        There it is.

      • pistoffnick

        *confused*

        “kneedeep in the hooplah”

        Ahh!

Hercules (or Hercales; known to the Romans as Melqart) …

    jfc they need an editor.

    Hercules is his Roman name.
    HERACLES is his Greek name.
Melqart is his @##%@$%ing PUNIC/PHOENICIAN name!

    • DEG

      Ssshh…. they’re journalos.

  31. Gustave Lytton

Anyone heard from TJ in a while?

  32. DEG

I had dinner at Ye Local Brewpub where I had two beers. I came home because I need to work the weekend. I am working, and I am half-way through a Maß of Oktoberfestbier.

Should I have more after I finish this Maß?

    • Yusef drives a Kia

      Yes, because, Beer!
      Cheers!

      • DEG

        Yes.

    • rhywun

I dunno, does work figure into your calculation at all? I had to a little but it was tiny so it almost didn’t even count.

      • DEG

It does. I got a project dumped on me with a deadline coming up quickly.

It’s a deadline that won’t make a nice whooshing sound as it goes flying past.

      • DEG

        I’ve stopped working.

      • rhywun

        ?

  33. LCDR_Fish

One new series on Prime (may be bbc too) that my i watched a few eps with my folks over Christmas – a new adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small – brit pre-war country vet story. O recall seeing the books years ago – may have read one or two but never watched the 70s adaptation.

    • DEG

O recall seeing the books years ago

Bits and pieces of them were part of reading class in the grade school I went to.

I remember a bit where an animal (cow I think?) pinned Herriot up against a stall wall. The farmer stood there laughing at him.

    • rhywun

That was on PBS constantly in my childhood. Didn’t really catch my fancy.

      • Not Adahn

The books fall into the Narnia/Harry Potter style of English literature that creates a world so perfect you wish it actually existed and you could go there.

    • slumbrew

Just 6 episodes a season. Wife and I enjoyed it a lot. Quite funny at times.

  34. KSuellington

Excellent music choice Spud. Kind of Blue is one of the top 5 albums of any musical genre ever recorded, probably number one. At this point I’ve listened to it over 10,000 times, for a year I had it on repeat every night until most of my dreams involved horns. It is perfect, every note is as it should be.

  35. DEG

    Now playing..

I did get another beer. A Clown Shoes beer.

  36. J. Frank Parnell

How about we spend some more time on the killing our enemies part? M’kay?

Well, if by “enemies” you mean “Trump-loving insurrectionists and their sympathizers” and “pro-covid anti-vaxxers”, that seems to be what they’re working towards.

  37. DEG

I avoided drunken bidding on GunBroker. I saw a rifle I liked. The pictures looked good, but there were no pictures of the bore. The description says the bore is poor. I asked the seller to elaborate instead of placing a bid. We’ll see what happens.

    • Sean

      That’s no fun.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

Saw him a few years ago. Good show.

      • MikeS

I have trouble putting my finger on why, but I just really, really like this tune. I know everyone has heard it a thousand times, but I just really like it.

The video adds an extra layer of awesome. YMMV

      • KSuellington

It’s because it is a sweet ass tune!

      • MikeS

        Well, yeah. There’s that… ?

      • Toxteth O'Grady

Yeah, never get tired of that one. “Well, turn it up, man!”

Jimmy Savile was in that film (Pop Gear).

      • MikeS

Look at all those brothers taking direction from a white man. Sad!

  38. ron73440

Wife went to bed, so I’m watching The Knights of Badassery looks entertaining.

  39. hayeksplosives

I watched “Deja Vu”, with Denzel Washington. Filmed in 2012, set in 2006.

At first the “high tech surveillance” was so far fetched i almost gave up on it. But then Denzel’s character reaches the same level of skepticism and tests the story he was told.

    Woah. Then it got good.

I accept that some of you lot will think I’m silly for liking the movie, but if you have Amazon Prime and an hour and a half to kill, give it a shot.

some of you lot will think I’m silly for liking the movie

I don’t know that movie but many of us have admitted to liking all kinds of crap.

      Don’t sweat it.

    • Ayn Random Variation

I saw that years ago and liked it a lot.
I’ll watch anything with Denzel in it. I even liked Little Things and Flight.

  40. Ayn Random Variation

My apartment building is just about fully vaccinated and masks are mandated everywhere. So naturally there’s a huge covid outbreak. The Karens are pestering building management to go back to full lockdown mode. Surprisingly BM sent out an email noting that even with all of the cases, nobody is actually sick, so for now i am relatively free.

    • Gustave Lytton

It’s probably due to not sorting trash into organic and landfill waste.

    • rhywun

My apartment building still has a “masks required in open areas” sign taped to the elevator and everybody completely ignores it. I have no idea of the “status” of my neighbors and see no reason why the management would either since it’s none of their goddamn business.

    • Sean

We got Chipotle take out last night. Standing in line, the milf in front of us was unmasked and the chubby teens behind us is weren’t either. All friendly and normal.

  41. MikeS

Don’t any of you fuckers work?!?!11?!?!

    • DEG

I saw your posts about your mom on an earlier thread. You posted them after I went to bed.

I hope for the best for your mom.

      • MikeS

Thank you, DEG. I appreciate that.

      • DEG

        You’re welcome!

Let us know how things are going and if you need anything.

And with this, I really am off to bed.

      • MikeS

I’ve had a beer or two (maybe more) and I’ve been meaning to say it for a while, so I’m just gonna throw it out there:

DEG, you are arguably the kindest Glib. Any time anyone posts about any kind of trouble, you can be sure DEG will be there with kind words. You are a kind soul. I’d be honored to meet you one day.

  42. Gustave Lytton

Forgot it’s sumo time already. Huzzah!

  43. DEG

    Going to sleep. Fuck it.

    • MikeS

      ‘night DEG.

  44. MikeS

Someone here posted a link to the Bill Withers recording session that this video came from . It was a masterclass. I’m having trouble finding it. Can anyone help?

    • Gustave Lytton

It’s from an appearance on the BBC’s Old Grey Whistle Test in 1972, but I can’t find anything other than single songs.

  45. Ayn Random Variation

I made the mistake of engaging the normals tonight. Some examples:
Me: If everything they say is proven wrong, why believe what they say?
Them: Duh, information is changing every day.
Me: When the vax came out and Trump was President, the same people telling us to get the vax now were telling us they wouldn’t take it.
    Them: That didn’t happen.
Me: Last year they said get the vax to stop the spread, but now they’re saying to get the vax so you don’t get serious symptoms.
Them. No they always said you’d still get covid even with the vax, but it wouldn’t be as severe.

    • Shpip

Not sure if those are normies, or NPCs that get their talking points updated daily.

Living in Clown World (i.e., Big Research U town), I see a lot of the latter.

    • rhywun

Don’t make that mistake again, for sanity’s sake.

      • Ayn Random Variation

I’ve changed my mind. Rather than keep my head down, I’m taking the path of speaking out in hopes that like minded people will know they’re not alone. I think that’s a small thing that I can do. I know I won’t convert the sheep.

      • limey

You are a good man. Please remember that.

      • Sean

Good for you, but remember that you’re behind enemy lines.

    • Shpip

You almost want to ask them “Didn’t the chocolate ration used to be 100 grams per week?” just so you can hear them say “The chocolate ration was recently increased to 75 grams per week.”

Don’t ask them how long we’ve been at war with Eastasia. It’ll only depress you.

    • hayeksplosives

Dude, I’ve just been listening to David Suchet read Revelations. (He read the whole Bible—free on YouTube).

David Suchet was Hercule Poirot, and when he became a Christian as an English actor in the 80s, it wasn’t good for one’s career. He went on to do an excellent documentary “In the Footsteps of St Paul.”

      Here’s revelations.

Some video evidence of all of this on your mobile device of choice might come in handy here.

Mornin’ Glibbies! Work was hell on ice quite literally but this came up on my playlist and I really dig it – https://youtu.be/eovMuxGqyGQ How have I never heard of these guys before? They sound like Jim Morrison and Ted Nugent had a morose child that was raised by Bill Ward. Outstanding!

    • Gender Traitor

Good morning, Fes! Hope you came through your worknight unscathed! I’d listen to the band you linked, but Sunday morning is my weekly choral music time on the satellite radio, so I’m in rather more of a mellow music mode.

      • Festus

Yeah, it’s like 11 minutes long but well worth it if you ever want to get your ya-ya’s out. I just found it really interesting. Nashville guys.

    • Festus

On a happier note, the young fellers came over and cleared our roof before we got another foot of snow. Took them about an hour and a bit, total which would have been 4 hours for me working alone (including the snowblowing) if I were even capable of climbing up there. They refused payment. “You’re Family!” Tears welled, beers were distributed…

      • Gender Traitor

        ????

      • Festus

Oddly enough, the extra foot of snow made the roads less treacherous than they were on Friday. Oiled skillet they were.

  47. Chafed

Good morning Glibs. Nothing like getting at 4 AM to take your kid to the airport. I see coffee and a nap in my future.

    • Gender Traitor

Good morning, Chafed! Kid heading back to school? If so, not one that’s insufferably woke, I hope.

    • Sean

Coffee and a nap? That’s not how it’s supposed to work.

  48. Sean

    Ni hao ma, bitches?

    • Festus

      Fine and dandy.

      • Sean

        ?

    • Festus

Just about everyone’s Dad had one of those Enfield’s in the closet when I was boy. Accurate if not too beat to shit. Good moose rifle.

My Tiger Rock is better and it only cost me nothing.

      • Fourscore

Are you selling futures? I’d like to get in on that. Already got a share of Micheal Jordan’s tennys so I’m good there. I want to be diversified.

  49. Fourscore

Good morning to all the Sunday early birds. Had that first cup of coffee, am now aware of my surroundings.

    • Sean

      ☕?

    • Not Adahn

There was an explosion at an Oath Keepers rally?

Funny thing, back pre-9/11, Pacifica Radio (all commie, all the time) loved the heck out of the Oath Keepers, because they were going to be the bulwark for when Bush/Clinton/Bush violated posse comitatus and implemented their dictatorship.

  50. Festus

I’m really digging Biden’s “Build Back Butter” plan.

  51. robodruid

    Good Morning all.
Same old crazy, same old stupid shit here….

    • Festus

Yup. It just gets stupider and stupider up here.

  52. Not Adahn

Morning all. Just glibbing until the sun gets a bit higher in the sky.

USPS has apparently lost track of my targets. I planned on spending my isolation assembling then, putting them into the correct storage, and moving the falling steel into their proper place for the summer. If one of the lumber yards has contactless pickup, then I could get the 2x4s cut to their proper length.

    But noooooo.

    • Sean

      Those commie rat fuckers!

      • Not Adahn

Hey now! Rat fuckers provide a valuable service!

    • Fourscore

No pick and chose? Hope you’re feeling better.

      • Not Adahn

Eh, I haven’t been feeling “bad” since New Years. I have stupidly severe allergies, so sinus problems are kind of an all the time thing.

      • Not Adahn

And having a “get out of work free” card from the positive cooftest had meant I don’t wake up early planning out my day. It’s rather nice. I just wish I could leave the house. But there is a small chance I could actually hurt someone.

    • Fourscore

There will be a big pool of Organic Employees (no artificial ingredients) available and someone will tap into it.

      “No Vaxxed Need Apply”

    • dontreadonme

I do, but after dumping American Express and Bank of America last year over their overtly political and unconstitutional positions I find myself running out of options. Are there any financial institutions that respect the Constitution anymore?

      • Festus

        No.

      • Gender Traitor

Any local credit unions near you? AFAIK, most have moved from membership based on where you work to membership based on where you live.
