The opening act was this then-unknown band, likely added by the record company, named Loverboy. Given the crowd you probably won’t be surprised to hear that Loverboy was literally booed off the stage. Of course, they went on to far more commercial success than the headliners, but I still would far rather listen to the other two’s music.

It’s not a joke that the river is at historic lows, but the pictures are more than a little misleading to casual observers: the middle of the US is mostly a wide, flat alluvial plain with rivers that snake and oxbow all over the place over the decades. So a lot of sandy expanse is never more than a few feet deep. As I write, the river is of course mostly in its channel, but most of the revealed bed never carried much water.
To give an example, Loosahatchie Bar is the island across from us and is almost entirely in the state of TN. Once it was almost in the middle of the river, but now there is barely any water on its AR side. From the sky, the old alternative channel looks dry maybe six months of the year, but the rest of the time it is wet only to a formality and probably could be swum-walked if you avoided the quicksandy parts.
Conversely, when the river is high it can appear miles wide as it takes over cotton bottoms that are never more than inches above its level. To cross the Ohio and Mississippi at Cairo at such times is to ride highways perched above levee-like foundations, span two bridges, all the while suspended as if you were traversing the Keys or Pontchartrain: no dry ground other than highway in view save distant bluffs.

Itasca is one of her favorite spots in the world, so I thought it would help her to say yes. I got lucky that the weather that day was overcast and cool so we were the only people at the headwaters for about 20 minutes. It was neat to have the spot to ourselves. Any other time I’ve been there it’s crawling with people.

So far for me ithe VID was 48 hours of feeling a bit run down followed by a periodic hack. Almost exactly what my office shared in Dec 2019 after a coworker returned from an event in Hong Kong. I had DirectTV on my flight this afternoon. I learned there really is an ESPN 8 – The Ocho. Hilariously, the really do broadcast dodge all. They also carry wiffleball, omniball (no idea what it is), and quad all.
Quadball is renamed quidditch. The game looked ridiculous. The players, all college students I assume, were running around holding a broomstick between their legs. They should have died of embarrassment but shame is unknown to them.
