Went to an urgent care yesterday with flu like symptoms, tested positive for COVID. The physician prescribed Paxlovid. Is that the thing that a lot of people take and then get a rebound infection later? Kinda tempted to just skip it. Aside from general weakness, I feel alright.

According to the author, the state was uninvolved in marriages until an infectious disease outbreak (syphilis?) in the early 20th Century brought out the Progressive public health types to mandate blood tests for prospective partners. The fee that might be charged for licensing the union was a little lagniappe for local pols.

In states controlled by team red, the push should be to legislate the Florida model of elections.

I think part of the aggravation is that one wing of the uniparty shows signs of becoming an actual competitive party, and our broken electoral system is being used to prevent that.

The current arrangement with the GOP allows them to exercise power quite satisfactorily, and most especially allows them to raise lots and lots of money, which is not really possible without an opposition to motivate donations. The Dems were happy to push through ObamaCare, even though they knew it would cost them an election cycle. Power trumps winning elections, which are increasingly marginal to the exercise of power.

I had the misfortune of having to go to the ER yesterday with my wife and daughter because my daughter was having some sort of panic/anxiety attack. The bitch at the desk was handing everyone a face mask as they came in. I politely said “no thank you”. But they went full code red mask nazi and I ended up leaving. I’m just not willing to play along anymore. I still feel like a putz. Thankfully all the tests they did came back normal. Having teenagers can really suck.
I brought my aunt to a hospital for an appointment this week and it was pretty relaxed. Definitely a lot of signs saying masks were required, but lots of people were walking around unmasked without getting screamed at.
I ordered a coffee and sat in the coffee shop without a mask and no one cared.
ER yahoos are probably on another level though, I bet.
Every time I start thinking of selling off my kids to gypsies, I remember that for the most part the reason I care so much is because I love them so much. But still, that gypsy money could come in handy.

Student loan default rates could dramatically spike if the Biden administration’s loan forgiveness plan is blocked, a top official at the U.S. Department of Education said in a new court filing.
The warning came as the Department of Justice asked a federal judge in Texas to stay an order that has temporarily blocked the Biden administration’s debt relief program.
“Unless the [Education] Department is allowed to provide debt relief, we anticipate there could be an historically large increase in the amount of federal student loan delinquency and defaults as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Education Department Undersecretary James Kvaal said in the filing.
