It was time to build another guitar, so I decided to take a broad view of what I wanted, instead of creating on the fly as usual. I decided on green using the metal cast paint I have had good results with. I also wanted to go with a very black theme with some cool results. I did an oil black on as much chrome as I could and used many black oxide screws.

Next comes the paint, which is pretty straightforward: 5 coats at 10-minute intervals, dry for 7 days and then 4 coats of lacquer to seal. The body took 10 days to paint.

Now it was time to build out the body, which is a lot of fun laying out the placement of the bridge and pickups, while keeping a good look.

The Neck

This kit came with an unfinished maple neck with maple fingerboard, also unfinished. The head stock came as a square block and I cut it to match the Tele stock with my scroll saw and it was good. The finish needed planning and much fine masking to get a good playable result, which made me smile.

I used a smoke black overall (except the fingerboard) and sanded between coats. I was looking for a worn yet brand-new finish, and I did a great job IMHO.

And here are the results, clean and green and ready for setup.

Setup took about 2 hours. The build is solid, so it was a breeze. I build at my studio but do my setups at home so I can take my time, and it pays off with a very nice guitar.

Time to set up

Poison Ivy

When I build a guitar, after the visual design, I think of three things and build to them.

Does it feel good in your hands?

Does it sound good?

Does it stay in tune?

I am happy with my results. I hope you like them as well.
