Ah well, next time, but still, my priorities for Euro travel are still Georgia and Romania. In the meantime, I’m heading up to see her this evening and give her a sendoff of sorts involving alcohol. And I’ll have very free weekends for the next few weeks. One more interesting note; she asked about readings to learn about libertarianism (“I want to understand what’s in your head”), so I sent her a copy of Charles Murray’s excellent book. That will be her airplane reading, so we’ll see how much she’s still interested in me after going through that.

See, I *prefer* drier wines. The local liquor store had a moderately-priced Dão that I tried over the summer that was more than satisfactory. I actually tried a Douro white (yeah, I know colder climates are generally better for white wines) that was very dry but not bad. If I earned more money I’d probably drink more Iberian reds (Douro, Dão, and Monastrell) for my daily drinkers, although I’d probably go with an Italian Gavi or an Argentine Torrontés for white wines.

Portugal makes hot climate wines: higher in alcohol, thicker, richer, lower acid. My preference is for cool climate wines which tend to be leaner, racier, and more food-friendly.

And both are extraordinary claims and require substantial evidence to be other than a sign that the speaker has allowed themself to fall into an unstable mindset. When I have pressed ‘truthers’ for evidence what I get is always the sort of vague Monday morning quarterbacking that assumes as baseline that things which became clear after the fact were known, discussed, coordinated and clear before the fact. That’s not persuasive. And you are not an abused victim because people call you out for this bullshit.
Mr. Flax – for my part, I am not making an equivalence to 9/11 truthers. At all. At the same time, could I be persuaded that the FBI and/or CIA knew about 9/11, or at least vague plans and allowed it to progress in the interest of furthering some goal they had? Certainly. To date, though, everything I’ve seen indicates, at worst, the normal bureaucratic incompetence, inertial laziness, and the inbuilt ‘arrogance’ of “it won’t happen here!”

If it needs to be said – I think Israel should raze Gaza and disperse the Palestinians to the neighboring countries. Last night, I saw the Substance hit Max, so I gave it a watch.
The only reason I can see for the critical acclaim was that it was a bunch of middle aged women who had never seen a horror movie before, and have no idea who Cronenberg is. Some decent effects, but a predictable and trite story, and I say this as a horror movie fan.

I’m torn: it’s nice and sunny, so a good day to wash and strore the window screens & wash the windows. On the other hand, nor’easter tomorrow makes washing the windows semi pointless. On the gripping hand, it’s going to rain next weekend.
Finally starting to cool off here. It was 58 when i got up this morning. Only supposed to hit about 85 this afternoon. We just finished a 14 day maintenance shutdown at the mill that i worked every day of. i have all kinds of shit I’m behind on, but i aint doing none of it. This is kick your feet up and relax until the wife complains type of day.
If she complains have her….you know…kick her feet up.
I still have hummingbirds here. I am sure they are layovers on their way to their Costa Rican vacation but we get so many I am sure we are on their travel brochures. They have drunk a couple gallons of syrup in the last week and a half.
Wife’s cousin has a rather territorial hummingbird that visits the feeder on the porch.
He’s quite loud while he’s dive bombing your head.
It takes a lot of sugar to maintain a heart rate of 1250 beats per minute. And, unfortunately, there are too many kids in my house at the moment to go hells up.
slum….I have been assaulted many times by the hummers. They will get in my face or crash into me. It can be traumatizing….it is exactly like being hit with a cotton bail. That is early in the year when they are nesting.
In the fall when they are just traveling they are less so. If I am refilling the feeder they will hover within five or ten feet until I get the feeder rehung. If I just stand very still a foot or so away from the feeder they will quickly begin feeding within inches of me, sometimes lighting on me to wait their turn at the trough. Some years, like this one, I may have 30-50 birds in a cloud around the feeder.

I take them out for the winter. I prefer an unobstructed view.

A thought I had this morning: During WW2 we had nearly half a million POW’s here in the states…mostly German. We treated them very well. They were expecting horror, instead they worked decent hours, got pay, good food, very few guards and most wanted to stay or emigrate after the war.
The goal, of course, was to create ambassador’s for America in the post war reconstruction. It was a wild success. The primary lesson, I recall hearing from a former female POW, was to learn the difference between fear and respect. She said that in Europe prior to the war the population was almost unaware that there is such a distinction.
My thought is that the world is three/four generations away from that lesson and we in the west seem to have forgotten it. Not just in Europe but here in our own country as well.
