Cometh the hour? Cometh the First. In your face.

    • Brochettaward

      Hmm, no white smoke yet.

What exactly is going on here?

      Also less booze.

      Regarding booze in the military:
Military life without alcohol is cruel and unusual.

Soldiers are the torch bearers of a culture that has survived them for Millenia. And getting shitfaced is central to all of it.

      • Gustave Lytton

No booze, no porn. Recipe for success on deployments.

      • The Other Kevin

Gustave, I feel like my daughter would agree with you.

      • Rat on a train

Put Class VI far enough from the barracks to make them work for it.

Even picking someone with the last name Wong doesn’t help

Let’s not go on arguing and bickering over who physically confronted who.

no wait one of those weird australian magpie things not like civilized european magpies at all

      • UnCivilServant

I’m sorry, but due to tariffs, the Australian Magpie Things are not available. We have automatically substituted an animatronic Terror Bird ans your account will be charged the difference in price.

There is a 50% restocking fee for all returned merchandize, and no refunds if blood is found on the product.

    • Raven Nation

      Oh, well played.

I have nowhere to do the work but I’d love to put together a kit car. In particular I’d want to have it stupidly overpowered, but stack the most boring looking shell on it so that it blends into traffic.

      • UnCivilServant

Don’t trust that Cylon on wheels, Ted.

    • PieInTheSky

I offered you so many farms with huge workshops.

Unless you’re offering to buy it for me, I can’t afford any of your listings.

Don’t forget hospices. In California people are signed up for hospices for years. They must be undead.

      • UnCivilServant

I’d prefer made in the USA.

      • EvilSheldon

Problem is, the 240Z body still looks fast.

I’ve always had a thing for LS-swapped Volvos. Something like a turd-brown 1983 Volvo 240 sedan with an LT5 under the hood. Problem with that, is that decent condition 240s are getting really rare these days, and they’re unusual enough to atract attention in their own right.

      • ron73440

Here is a Toyota AE86 being put together.

It seems OK for the price.

      • EvilSheldon

Factory Five has a great lineup. Cobras, pickups, hot rods.

I’m boycotting Factory Five until they bring the 818 kit back. Ideally with the Ford 2.3L Turbo EcoBoost instead of the Subaru powerplant…

      • Timeloose

THe 818 looks like a go cart in a good way. That would make a great track car.

Michelin-starred restaurateur faces jail for using ants as dessert garnish

Ants are not among the 10 insect species approved for human consumption under the country’s laws. The approved list includes grasshoppers, locusts and two-spotted crickets, among others.

Prosecutors on Monday also asked that the restaurant, which holds two Michelin stars, be fined 20 million Korean won ($13,510; £10,100).

The owner admitted to serving ants but argued that they were used in a “small part” of the restaurant’s 15-course menu – as a topping for sorbets – and that diners were told they could opt for non-ant toppings.

    • Timeloose

I’ll have the special….but hold the ants.

    • PieInTheSky

to be fair if I was eating at a 2 star in Korea I would probably go with the ants

    Toxteth,

There is a domestic abuse shelter Center for Community Solutions (https://www.ccssd.org/) that is a 35 minute walk from your address.

and get a restraining order. or personal protective order, or whatever they’re called.

Don’t they have a green army dedicated to stopping these kind of projects in their tracks??

My husband and my kid were in the car with me when I was talking to a client on speaker because I was driving. To me, it was a normal client call. I got off the phone, and XY says, “Are all your clients like that?” I said, yeah, pretty much. This one’s not too bad. He said, “I never knew that’s what you do. I couldn’t that. That call drove me crazy.”

So now I’m more cognizant of exactly HOW MUCH of my brain I give away, and today I had to tell a client quite strongly that I’m about done with his maintenance.

Yesterday I realized I’m teaching someone who doesn’t pay me nearly enough how to do my job and I’m about to hit her with a bill for that because I am done.

And honestly, I needed the kick in the ass so I got ManicTime to actually track my time 24/7 and I have to tell you. I’m looking at the time I’ve tagged per client and I’m almost in tears at how much of myself I’ve given away.

    • Mojeaux

Yeah, so, I spent an entire hour on that email and my time-fogged brain would’ve clocked it at 10 minutes if I didn’t have a tracker keeping time for me.

    Shocking revelation

Why do some people stay in terrible, horrible, no good, very bad jobs?

A new report finds that nearly a quarter of workers who get health insurance through their jobs report staying in unwanted jobs for health insurance — a figure that’s risen dramatically in the last five years.

The survey from West Health-Gallup Center on Healthcare in America finds that approximately 23 million adults are in what the report authors call “job lock.” In 2021, 16% of those surveyed were in job lock.

“Anybody having to stay in a job just to keep their health insurance, knowing that they want to leave, is crazy,” says Ellyn Maese, a research director for the center, a partnership between Gallup and West Health. “That is a concerning figure, even if it’s 10%. But when we’re seeing it rise to 1 in 4 employees, that’s pretty serious.”

No way. I have only been hearing this since about 1979.

    • rhywun

Or, you know, they have other bills to pay too. And job hunting sucks balls.

But no. We’re NPR and we’re gonna push mEdIcArE fOr aLl for the hundredth time this week.

      • juris imprudent

Just make the health insurance premium tax deductible for individuals.

    • The Other Kevin

I worked freelance for 5 years in the early 2000’s and I loved it. But I had no health insurance because the insurance companies were able to deny me based on pre-existing conditions. So eventually I got a corporate job. If Obamacare had come out then, it wouldn’t have mattered, I couldn’t afford those plans.

So yes, this has been around a long time, and I suspect “a figure that’s risen dramatically in the last five years” is doing a lot of work here.

I’m guessing they weren’t advocating decoupling insurance from work.

      • UnCivilServant

I’m guessing they weren’t advocating decoupling insurance from work.

I’m guessing they want you to die on an NHS waiting list.

I’m guessing they weren’t advocating decoupling insurance from work.

Not in so many words, but I whatever flavor of socialized medicine they are pushing does exactly that.

I’d want to have it stupidly overpowered, but stack the most boring looking shell on it so that it blends into traffic.

There’s always the motorcycle-swapped Smart car.

    • Sensei

My favorite is the Honda Odyssey (with many different colored body panels) with the Tesla Model S Plaid drivetrain.

      • UnCivilServant

If I’m going to the trouble of putting it together, I would like a V-something Gas engine. 8 is the first that comes to mind, but other numbers of cylinders are negotiable.

  11. The Late P Brooks

Well I’ll be. It’s raining. Hasn’t done much of that this year.

    • Necron 99

We’ve received quite a bit of rain this year. Unfortunately, the heat is settling in and it’s 100F+ for the rest of the month and beyond.

More/bigger subsidies. That’s how you get costs under control.

I’m getting a good laugh from Rand Paul on X. Next week he finally gets Fauci in front of his committee. And Paul has some authority this time. On X he’s priming the pump and going through a greatest hits of Fauci’s lies. I don’t know how Paul is sleeping at night, he’s like a kid on Christmas Eve.

      • Sean

        ^^ ayup

      • R C Dean

Fauci should die covered in shit and begging for mercy. Instead, he will live out the rest of his life in comfort, using his pharma royalties and the biggest federal pension in US history.

  15. The Late P Brooks

    Narrator: And nothing else happened.

Science-fearing Americans will rise as one to defend him from scurrilous attacks and lies based on nothing.

    • The Other Kevin

At least it will be entertaining.

      • Sean

        Doubt.

    • rhywun

      “Today in stupid.”

    • R C Dean

      Yeah, that’s not bad luck.

I think it is the 105 degree weather that make the day drag on.

    • rhywun

      70° here 🙂

      I’m lovin’ it.
