The people responsible for maintaining order have been sacked, or the people responsible for sacking them have been sacked. We’ve lost track, it’s ‘Merica’s birthday so enjoy the open post.

    Porterhouses are $7.99/lb this weekend.

    🙂

Mrs. TOK found some nice steaks on sale today. They’re going on the grill later. Cheers, Sean.

Tomorrow I have the day off, and I plan on scrubbing down the grates of my smoker and thawing meat for the big day.

        Enough with the euphemisms!

    • Nephilium

I’m looking forward to it. I didn’t mind the Day the Earth Blew Up, which was the other movie length cartoon that WB wanted to delete as a tax write-off.

      • Sean

        I don’t like Cena.

        At all.

Is it because he doesn’t think Taiwan is a country?

      • Sean

        Nope.

    • rhywun

Never heard of it. Live action under development for 8 years?!

I’ve decided the 4th is my favorite holiday. Good food, drinking, swimming, and fireworks. You don’t have to buy or wrap presents, minimal decorating, and you’re under no obligation to visit anyone.

Hope you all have an amazing 3 days.

    • Nephilium

Halloween. Best movie season, rewarding small children for bravery, women wearing revealing costumes, wide range of acceptable and recommended drinks, fall weather, fire pits, and football.

    • bacon-magic

Thanksgiving, Halloween and July 4th in that order.

    • Tonio

I want to like Independence Day more than I am able to do. Love USA, fireworks, cookouts, etc. But, I live in the mid-atlantic so there is always swelter, and it’s particularly brutal this year.

      • Donny Three-Fingers (KJ5GQR)

Texas says “Bless your heart, it’s Thursday in July!”

Hope you get a bit of a break from the heat. At least we aren’t wearing wool uniforms and lugging muskets and canon.

      • Brochettaward

Come down to Florida. It’s so hot that my dog refuses to go outside. Plops down on the ground to passively resists.

      • slumbrew

Currently in Connecticut and I’m sweating as badly as I did in DC last July. I don’t know how you people do it.

      • DEG

        Currently in Connecticut

        There’s your problem.

      • slumbrew

The answer to any, “Why would you do that?” question:

        “Family”.

        My wife’s, in this case.

    • EvilSheldon

As weird and unpopular as this sounds…Christmas is still my favorite holiday. Never really thought about why, maybe it’s just that I like winter.

      • Threedoor

        Cocco
        Tom and Jerry mix.
        Warm fire
        Pretty lights
        Cider and fireball

      • Nephilium

        Threedoor:

Tom and Jerry mix? Oh… you’ll like the December cocktail of the month.

/look back to the batter based drinks for a sneak peak

Hillsdale College’s “Revolutionary America” documentary is now available on youtube. I saw it in the theater. It was sold out or really close to sold out (i.e. maybe one free seat). It turns out conservative talk radio in the area had been pushing it.

Later tonight I’m going to see “Young Washington” with a group of local libertarians.

The July 4th ship parades in NYC sound pretty awesome. The Navy ships will be led by USS Nimitz. I’d get more excited if my son in law wasn’t going to soon be my ex-son in law. I guess I can still get excited for my daughter’s best friend’s husband, who’s a nuke guy on the ship, and their mascot is that black lab named Poseidon I follow on Instagram.

I’ll try to keep my roman candle from firing off.

Holy shit it takes me forever to do anything these days. New Detroit Axle (via Amazon- so far so good) brake rotors are on, and I even adjusted the e-brake so it’s not constantly dragging. No wonder that thing gets shitty mileage. Next we assemble calipers and pads.

    But first a snack.

    • slumbrew

I’ll be watching fireworks and drinking in public.

Block party here on the 4th, which is nice. 4th isn’t my fav holiday, as I am a fall guy, and am much more of a fan of T-day. Although I do love the German winter holidays.

Bad news, I found out how much (ballpark) I am going to have to spend to get my rental up to snuff after I paid the tenants to leave (I don’t want to wait the 90 days required here in OR), but I am thinking, since I have to do it anyway, replace the carpet with VPF. Same cost, basically, and it might attract more buyers. That, and of course, paint and patch.

  7. The Late P Brooks

    replace the carpet with VPF

    I hate carpet.

      • JaimeRoberto feckful & gruntled

Are we still taking about flooring?

      • Gustave Lytton

We aren’t talking abut the drapes.

    • rhywun

I had to look that up.

I’m sick of wall to wall carpet myself. I haven’t had anything else for almost 20 years.

  8. Mojeaux

At 7:0something p.m. 23 years ago today, I shot a fresh human being out of my hoo-ha.

    • Gender Traitor

Happy Birthday, XX! (Not entirely sure I’ve got the right one, but an educated guess.)

      • Mojeaux

        You got it!

    • Brochettaward

You birthed one of billions upon billions of huu-man children.

      I birth The First.

      We are not the same.

      • Mojeaux

        😞

    • Evan from Evansville

I think ‘birthdays’ should be days for the mom. The baby didn’t do shit. Except make a fuss. About everything.
      (And such ugly, ugly children.)

  9. Gender Traitor

I got the impression that SOME Glibs were jealous that I got Juneteenth off as a paid holiday, so you might be gratified to know that because the Federal Reserve banks ARE open tomorrow, my CU will be open for business, and I’ll have to work. (Our branches will be closed Saturday.)

On the bright side, since relatively few employees ever work on Saturday, instead of using regular Holiday pay for 7/4, all F/T employees now have an extra eight hours of Floating Holiday time to use by the end of the calendar year.

    • rhywun

I get both off. And all of next week.

    • Brochettaward

When I was in Buffalo I knew a kid who was so racist that he bitched about having off for MLK day. Then he lamented that “we didn’t just pick our own cotton.”

  10. Threedoor

Work is slow but I have a day and a half Saturday/Sunday here in town which is nice.

Going to do the fireworks on the fourth. I donated a little bit and pressed that they needed to open the field again for observing.

    And they did!!

Last time it was open (an accident as somebody didn’t chain a gate) I got some hot ash in my eye and flaming debris landed five or six feet from us. It was perfect.

There may be a S/N stamped on the bed of your lathe at the tailstock end.

      • Threedoor

Of course I put that snug up against the wall.

      • Threedoor

The Bridgeport is out at my dad’s place and I have no desire to drive the 30 miles to go look at it.

I do need to take some stuff out to his place and turn it down on his much larger lathe though.

        Mine is only 15”

      • Plinker762

The numbers on mine are legible from the front but I have seen them on the very end.

  11. Timeloose

I love independence day and have all my life. Fireworks, food, and friends, and family. This year i’m making pastrami using my on sale corned beef from St. Patrick’s day, burgers, and dogs. Hot as hell, but I will adapt.

    Working tonight, but off tomorrow.

  12. Evan from Evansville

I am 51/51sts done with my shift, the week, and possibly my time at Meijer. (The number I have in my head of me returning is not zero.)

The president I messaged from the title services gig directly got back to me Tues, but we still haven’t met or finalized anything. Whispers suggest the holiday weekend is a direct snag in our communication. Hrm.

Got a piece coming out next week about standardized test scoring. Once, and still a big if, I get new work sorted out, I wanna get something down about my time in receiving, while the memory’s still fresh. More important, share some nitty-gritty surgery pics and share the first distinct goals post Incident. Pleased as punch to say, there really is a pic of me in the hospital bed, kinda a living victim of a scalping, with an honest and legit big smile on.
