Thursday Afternoon Links

Stuck with a sidekick today. The littlest got caught with a fever at daycare yesterday. Per usual, today he’s absolutely fine and full of energy. I’m pretty sure we’ll dope him up with Advil tomorrow, just in case. He’s actually been pretty okay, except that he’s part cat and desires to be touching, sitting, laying on me all the time. He also enjoys sitting in boxes and random acts of senseless violence. So maybe more than “part” cat. As long as he doesn’t start wearing cat ear headbands and talking about his fursona, we’re good.

Anyway, here’s some links for this afternoon.

Apparently, The Lump was actually some sort of parasite that turns people into Clinton-era Democrats. If only we could get it to spread and defeat the Commie bug.

Someone is going to get fired for this. Someone has one job: don’t let the Mayor sign things that he shouldn’t.

I’m interested in whatever has the punditocracy stirred up about Trump’s address tonight. Here’s the Puppyblender’s take. Shit. That joke has to be old enough to drink.

Also, SpaceX is launching another Big Fuck’n Rocket today.

The Rev covers Lemmy.

Brett set out to find America, the real America, the America of strip malls and serial killers, of butthole waxing and kelp smoothies, of cocaine and maggots. He sought it in the most American part of America—Florida: swamp gas and fever dreams, where love arrives on a rickety boat and leaves when it doesn't have the money for its fourth abortion. Oh, where has Brett gone? He’s drinking at the neck of America’s wang, chewing its foreskin and working its shaft. Brett is becoming legend. Brett can never die. Brett can never die. Brett is America, facedown in his own patriotic puke: the red his blood, the white his stomach lining, and the cold, cold blue his gas station slushie, spiked with coconut rum and tetracycline.

I would have thought a Florida Child would be at least up to aerosols by now.

Maverick Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) has said he has “no plans” to leave the Democratic Party, but he warned on Wednesday that if Democrats completely turn their backs on U.S. support for Israel, that would cross a red line that could push him out of the party.

“If our party ever becomes — and just makes it official — the anti-Israel party, that’s when I would leave because that’s been a moral clarity for me,” he said during an interview at the Hill Nation Summit in Washington.

Oh god, they’ve resurrected the term Maverick.

That said, I think he’s kind of threatening to close the barn door after all the livestock left and the farmhouse burned down…

    • rhywun

*sigh* I was really hoping the one hill he was not gonna die on would be something other than Israel.

Such as, oh, the party is going hard-core communist?

It just goes to show that he’s OK with that, I guess.

      • Brochettaward

I mean, it’s funny to me when Fetterman gets the ire of the left after they wheeled his barely coherent body out there to events to get elected and pretended he was all well and good.

I’m not going to pretend he’s some moral or principled guy. If you can switch political parties over one issue you are probably a pretty “flexible” guy to begin with.

      • rhywun

Fetterman cited Democratic support for an amendment sponsored by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) to cut off $3.3 billion in annual security assistance to Israel

And WTF does “security assistance” even mean? If it means throwing money at them, I am against that too. Which is entirely different from being “anti-Israel” in my book.

Maybe his brains are just still scrambled because he’s not making sense.

But yeah, there is no way he would join the GOP – he is already on record supporting most of the Left’s platform.

      • DEG

there is no way he would join the GOP

Fetterman was a Republican in his 20s.

      • DEG

My memory is off slightly. I thought the Politico article on him said he was a Republican but it only says he was conservative:

He grew up in Central Pennsylvania’s York County, the son of an affluent insurance firm partner. As a teenager, he describes himself as a “football-playing meathead.” His family members were all Republicans, so he was a conservative too, though “not in an aggressive or angry way.”

      • Brochettaward

He was obviously conservative when he pulled that shotgun on the black dude.

He was a Democrat whenever he did anything good in his life.

      • Evan from Evansville

“… so he was a conservative too, though “not in an aggressive or angry way.”’

Is that like fucking someone, but not in a gay way? Of course, the quoted had to pass off the natural aggression of conservatives to ensure their friends that the speaker isn’t *too* dirty just by being vaguely associated with the accused.

      • Threedoor

        Ha!

    • R C Dean

The thing about Fetterman is, he woofs a lot, but I don’t think he has ever not cast a party-line Donk vote on anything that matters. If he does “leave” the Donks, I guarantee you he will be an “independent” who caucuses with them and votes with them.

      • Brochettaward

Let’s say he left the D’s. He becomes a Republican. What is he going to do, vote against everything he claimed to stand for before? Get primaried and get ousted by a more MAGA guy?

Become an independent and what is Fetterman at all? He was a guy who ended up winning that election by default. He had the D after his name and the media running cover. He’d be gone the next election cycle still.

Syracuse, N.Y. – Two hours after he announced his intention to veto a local law imposing term limits on his job and the county comptroller’s, County Executive Ryan McMahon mistakenly signed a letter approving the law instead. His office emailed the approval letter over to the legislature clerk.

Nineteen minutes later, McMahon’s office emailed his signature on a veto message to the clerk.

    No refunds.

Trump’s teleprompter operator investigated for betting on speeches

July 16 (UPI) — A White House teleprompter operator is under investigation for allegedly placing bets on prediction markets related to President Donald Trump’s statements.

The teleprompter operator, Gabriel Perez, allegedly made more than $100,000 placing bets on Kalshi that predicted what Trump would say during his speeches, including his State of the Union address, ABC News, CNBC and CNN reported Thursday citing unnamed sources.

Perez is accused of using insider knowledge to enrich himself through the prediction market.

    • R C Dean

Is there a crime of some kind in using superior information to make money on betting markets?

      • Brochettaward

It’s like gambling. Or any other “investment” unless you are in Congress or just super important.

It’s all nonsense to me. Like we need to protect the sanctity and fairness of gambling. But it’s A-OK for congress critters to short a stock on an industry they are about to demolish or give a leg-up.

So you chased off Bob with the help of your rusty Spanish? Or am I misreading that.

      • Michael Malaise

He used the Rusty Spanish first, and then had to resort to Bob to finally get the shyster weirdo out of town.

      • Aloysious

        I’m very confused.

        I blame the Spanish.

TOO LOCAL NEWS: Property tax cap coming to ballots in NH

Republican legislators cheered Wednesday when Gov. Kelly Ayotte signed HB 1300, legislation they believe can both help bring property taxes under control and energize GOP turnout in November.

“We believe voters need the tool of a tax cap to curb property tax hikes and make schools accountable for results,” said Senate President Sharon Carson (R-Londonderry). “I salute Republicans in the Senate and House for passing this critical legislation and Gov. Ayotte for signing it.”

Thanks to the new law, voters across the state will have a question on their ballots this November, and again in 2028, asking whether their school property taxes should be capped at the rate of inflation plus new construction costs.

    • Michael Malaise

Fucking Retardlicans won’t lower your taxes but make sure they just go up at a less insane rate.

      • DEG

Republicans (most of them being libertarians masquerading as Republicans) in the state legislature have cut and eliminated taxes in NH over the last few years.

School budgets are all made at the municipal level in NH. Republicans have not had success with getting on school boards or with get-out-the-vote efforts in municipal elections. So, they decided to go with a tax cap option coming from the state level.

      • Brochettaward

Are they hard R libertarian types?

      • Michael Malaise

I agree in general with the cap legislation, it’s just that most of the time this is what Repubs do. It’s the Malice quote about driving the speed limit off the cliff.

And I also thought about how property taxes are levied here in Ohio, and yes it’s local so this is clearly better than nothing. I suppose my point was more in general.

      • DEG

I suppose my point was more in general

        I understand.

Democrats in NH are banging the “downshifting costs” drum. They’re say that due to all the taxes at the state level that Republicans have cut or reduced, there is not enough money for the state to “pay its share” of education costs. I’ve seen Democrats play the “state isn’t paying its share of education costs” card in one form or the other ever since I moved to NH. It’s got a bad track record, but it might have an effect this year.

    • R C Dean

Why new construction costs? Isn’t construction on government schools paid for by bonds?

      • DEG

In NH, not necessarily. There is an option for municipal governments and school districts to put cash into a dedicated fund over several years for capital projects instead of bonds.

Whether they are bonds or cash, capital projects are budgeted separately in NH from recurring costs like salaries.

  6. Fourscore

A reminder to one and all.

Honey Harvest is on schedule for the third Sunday in September, the 20th, only 2 months awy.

Some have made their reservations locally already but I’m sure there is still lots of space available. Thinking of the future we need to get as many Glibs as possible to meet up.

The leaves should be changing color and a trip to the North Shore of Lake Superior (about a 2 hour drive) will find lots of color. Bring a jacket.

Family friendly. Hope to see lots of never seen before faces.

    • Brochettaward

If MikeS is there, tell him I said he’s gay.

      • Brochettaward

Like Mike? Who the fuck have you ever met named Mike from North Dakota who wasn’t sucking dick?

      • Fourscore

You could come and tell him yourself. Two birds, one stone.

    • Rat on a train

Canucks haven’t smoked you out yet?

      • Fourscore

Finally the smoke is lifting, much better air than 2 hours ago. I’m guessing a change in wind direction.

      • creech

We might have to say RIP to Sean. TV says the Killer Canuck Smoke is about to overwhelm his neck of the woods. This shit is Canada’s retaliation for OMB’s assholery towards them.

    • Evan from Evansville

I won’t be bringing The Jacket. For a while, I thought I’d like to hang with him IRL. There was TOS’ descent and I haven’t followed how they went, esp not Balko, the farthest fallen. (Went to IU, as well.) I imagine we’d still get along. (I *don’t* get along with very few people.)

I wish I could come, but that’s highly, highly, highly unlikely. I wonder how that’d go.

    • Evan from Evansville

I also enjoy being present for that reveal.

      *holds finger over mouth*

    • Threedoor

      I would love to come.
      Sadly not going to happen.
I’m hoping to be at least ambulatory after my next surgery by then but travel Is out of the question.

  7. Evan from Evansville

My fursona is delightful. I’d rather a purse-ona on a sugar mama to dawdle me along. I’m sure we could switch roles if she desired.

  8. The Late P Brooks

    Inexplicable

Austin-based Saronic Technologies, a defense-industry startup, had narrowed down a selection process to two candidate sites, in Collinsville or in Brownsville, and they chose Brownsville. The project is to be called Port Alpha, and will now be linked to the Gulf of Mexico.

According to California Forever, this is the fault of the state legislature and governor for not stepping up fast enough to woo the company here.

“As California’s most vocal advocates for new industries, high-wage jobs, and homes people can afford our coalition is extremely frustrated that California lost this historic opportunity,” the group said in a statement. “Shipbuilding is in California’s heritage, and California was the natural home for Port Alpha.”

“While Texas moved quickly and aggressively, California could not provide the clear, expedited approval process needed to compete,” says Joshua Arce, executive director for the California Alliance of Jobs, speaking to the Chronicle. “This is an enormous loss for Solano County, California workers and our state’s manufacturing economy.”

Everybody knows California is the most business-friendly state in the union.

    • R C Dean

The project is to be called Port Alpha, and will now be linked to the Gulf of Mexico.

      The Gulf of what, again?

      • Threedoor

        Merica!

I’m being inclusive by using the M.

      Texas moved quickly and aggressively

      How much did they pay?

Love the Rev. Seen him several times.

  10. kinnath

New record at the kinnath compound. The weather station says dew point is 84 degrees. And the temp is 97.

It so awesome that the sun goes down an hour later than it should.

    • Rat on a train

Enjoy the outdoor activities while it is still light …

      • kinnath

I can watch outdoor activities through the picture window.

  11. Toxteth O'Grady

Literally, Yusef / Bob and I had to make a guy go away. Didn’t overhear what he said and he’s too grumpy to ask.

Am suddenly a mother at my late age of twins ten and twenty years older than me. Plus five yappy dogs.
