At work today, my Yemeni coworker asked for help in translating an Arabic phrase that means “to carry a painful burden in your heart against someone”. He said the word “grudge” wasn’t strong enough. I suggested words like resentment, scorn, contempt and disdain. He explained that he was very angry at his wife’s sister for calling Child Protective Services on him and temporarily losing custody of his infant daughter. He said he’s been angry at the woman for a long time, and that is a sin according to his version of Islam.

Arabs and Muslims are pretty big on grudges, I think. Militant Muslims have been trying to kill Salman Rushdie since 1989 over a novel few have read. Bin Laden complained about the loss of Al-Andalus (Spain) in 1492. He scheduled the attack 9/11 because that was the date of the Ottoman defeat at the Battle of Vienna in 1683.

    suggested music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcYhYO02f98

Anyway, I suggested the word nemesis and he said that the feeling you have toward your nemesis is the right word. “Bitter hatred” is close enough, I think. “Enmity” is not quite strong enough.

I’m thankful for a job where I get to practice Arabic sometimes. Better to be a content forklift driver than a miserable process engineer. And the job is engineering adjacent. Close enough. Short commute, decent pay, exercise, fresh air, sunshine…it’s a pretty good gig. I’ve basically achieved my goal of having a simple, peaceful life. And I’m comfortably poor to boot. Yay me. It sure beats being in jail or an insane asylum. Inshallah, I’ll never be back in either of those places.

      Hostility? Loathing? Anmosity?

      • Evan from Evansville

Animosity would be my choice. (Not raggin’ on your spelling, or your cord, Nelson.)
a strong feeling of dislike, ill will, or active hostility toward someone or something.

I highly enjoy it adds this: “It is not a small annoyance. It is a strong, lasting anger or resentment”

“I’m thankful for a job where I get to practice Arabic sometimes.” Keeping your eye open for such is smart. There’s always something fun in there. And your forklifting can carry you to many different places, perhaps one of your choosing later. Very good things.

      Well accomplished.

    • Aloysious

Forklift driver… that means that you are a good forker.

I love my (mostly) peaceful life. It’s worth has no price.

Arabic is a fascinating language – prolly Hebrew too but I never looked at it much.

When I was an exchange student sprout I spent some of my meager pocket money on language material. Dutch was one. And Catalan, since we had spent lots of time there. And Welsh – another fascinating language. Arabic was another.

The host mom who cleaned up once in a while was baffled at my interest to say the least. Her proper son became a priest so neener neener. I just got useless a linguistics degree.

That’s pretty much exactly what it is. It’s still a pretty big deal for talky, arty, and hippieish types. Upstate NY was the epicenter of that particular Religious Revival, too.

Elbert Green Hubbard (June 19, 1856 – May 7, 1915) was an American writer, publisher, artist, and philosopher. Raised in Hudson, Illinois, he had early success as a traveling salesman for the Larkin Soap Company. Hubbard is known best as the founder of the Roycroft artisan community in East Aurora, New York, an influential exponent of the Arts and Crafts movement.

Among Hubbard’s many publications were the fourteen-volume work Little Journeys to the Homes of the Great and the short publication A Message to Garcia. He and his second wife, Alice Moore Hubbard, died aboard the RMS Lusitania when it was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine SM U-20 off the coast of Ireland on May 7, 1915.

😮 I forgot about that. Their headquarters was an astonishing example of early Frank Lloyd Wright from a period before “Rust Belt” was a thing. Demolished long ago, now a toxic waste dump part of town.

A veve (also spelled vèvè or vevè) is a religious symbol commonly used in different branches of Vodun throughout the African diaspora, such as Haitian Vodou and Louisiana Voodoo. The veve acts as a “beacon” for the lwa, and will serve as a lwa’s representation during rituals.

“Lionel Richie in ICU after struggling to finish St. Louis concert”

He checked himself into a hospital in St. Louis. Impressive dude. Younger than I thought, 77. His appearance on Top Gear is really funny, when he described the dealer’s reaction when Richie said he wanted to buy ~6 Mercedes (or similar, for the Commodores), and the dealer strongly doubted if he had any money.

Reminds me! Dad turns 77 in September. On Thurs, bro and me are taking him to a John Fogerty show in Chicago. It’s Mom’s present, and our present for delivering it, cuz she ain’t goin’. His knee is forever bugging him after replacement, and he kinda didn’t rehab it well, and I really hope we get seats. Surely, we will. But, uh. That also seems more lame. I like CCR just fine, but. Iran’s leaders and most of its people see themselves as having been at war with the US and Israel since 1979 and not being defeated.

It doesn’t matter that the US killed their top leaders. They lost far more people in the war with Iraq (a US ally at the time) and survived that too.

The war will end and not with the unconditional surrender of Iran. This will only serve to make the US government and military to look like even bigger fools than they already have been.

Declare victory and stop bombing them. Let the ships come and go. The Iranians will claim a greater victory, but so what? They’ve been doing that for 47 years. Continuing the war just drives up oil prices.

They know we won’t send ground troops, and that gives them another propaganda victory.

I predict nothing will come of this: ‘Hunter Biden admits ‘jobs’ at Burisma+ helped finance his crack cocaine addiction.

“I never went broke,” Biden boasted on the “Dopey” podcast, after describing a two-month-long bender at the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood, Calif., where the former first son said he tried to “go out with a bang.”
“Dopey” host Dave Manheim asked Biden how he was able to “scrape the money together” for the cocaine and prostitutes and private bungalows at the luxurious Chateau Marmont.
“Well, I still had the residual. Like for instance, I still was on the board of Burisma,” Biden explained.

Well, the rain decided to start pouring for my trip to the store. And someone decided to park an BMW in my spot when I got back to my house. The standard for “not guilty by reason of insaniity” is that you are so bugfuck nuts you did not realize what you were doing at all. So to get off under that standard, she would have to convince the jury she did not realize she was strangling her children one after the other.

Yeah, it’s not something to be swallowed whole. Very funny throughout, and better, imnsho, than the successor serials.
