Final Friday Afternoon Links of August

by | Aug 28, 2026 | Cocktails, Daily Links, I Am Lame | 78 comments

First, thank all of you for putting up with the issues we’ve been having with the scheduler. It’s not as if we have a team of on call professionals standing by to receive your calls. On that note, we are running low on content to feed into the maw of the beast, so if you’ve got any ideas kicking around, feel free to submit, or reach out to one of us if you need help with the process.

In sports news, the Browns have decided to piss off the fan base, The WNBA doesn’t know what W means, Bananaball ticket prices on the secondary market are crazy, and college football and the NFL are having a fight over who plays where. But you care not for my inane ramblings, and instead want entertainment and links. Let’s start with a band I was introduced to thanks to our reclusive Heroic Mulatto and move onto the links:

Well, I expect to see quite a few lazy Halloween costumes this year.

I… just… why?

“Evil begins when you begin to treat people as things.”

In future Thursday night movies, this looks like it could be fun.

Fine… Rapist/Repee.

Another part of the beer guard I grew up with has closed.

Catholics in the mist. (Pro tip for everyone, when an apostate is able to point out several errors in your understanding, you don’t have one)

“…milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom…”

Just ‘truthy’?

Different cultures are different? Who could have known?

“Interstate commerce”.

After careful consideration… Fuck Canada.

It’s that time of year… the darkest beer season for me. Shelves full of Marzens and pumpkin beers. So let’s give those of you who like the pumpkin beers something else to do with them.

Great Pumpkin

  • 4 part (2 oz) pumpkin ale (or spiced brown ale, yes a Christmas ale would work well here too)
  • 2 part (1 oz) apply brandy/applejack (if going with a Christmas ale, a blackstrap rum can be used here)
  • 2 part (1 oz) rye
  • 1 part (0.5 oz) dark maple syrup
  • 1 whole egg (insert warning about uncooked eggs and pasteurization here. You’re an adult, aren’t you?)

This is going to be a tricky one to make, since we start with a dry shake WITH a carbonated beverage. That’s right, everything into a shaker (no ice), and shake for 10-15 seconds. Be very careful here, the shaker will want to pop apart. ff you let it, be ready for a lot of cleanup. Gently open the shaker, and add ice. Shake until chilled, and double strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with some fresh grated nutmeg if you would like.

With that, I’ll let you get out and enjoy your weekend.

Can you hand me a trans-female and a two-spirit connector?

    • EvilSheldon

It should obviously be ‘top’ and ‘bottom’ connectors. I’m going to start using this, effective immediately.

      • EvilSheldon

        (Not clicking that at work.)

Serious answer – ‘Bear’ and ‘Twink’ describe particular gay socio-sexual subcategories. ‘Top’ and ‘Bottom’ specifically and exclusively describe who’s doing the fucking, and who’s getting fucked.

      • (((Jarflax

Breeding hole and shenis are the correct nomenclature.

      • Pat

It’s the classic Always Sunny bit about bears and twinks. The topic of whether a twink can be a top is explored.

      • (((Jarflax

Of course, haven’t you ever heard of a bear bottom?

      • EvilSheldon

Ah. Never saw that one. I like my Always Sunny in small doses.

And a twink absolutely can top.

Not all male connectors have prongs, bigot. If only we didn’t have bigger problems than this nonsense.

In sports news, the Browns have decided to piss off the fan base,

We have a football pool and my boss(from Cleveland) puts it together, so he picks the password.

It’s always some combination of BrownsTough with some symbols added on.

I suggested De$haunW@tson, but he didn’t use that one.

BrownsTough. A stool softener should take care of that.

Hopefully to mean “I hope”; singular “they”; “primary bedroom” instead of “master bedroom” – all are examples of recent language changes.

    How do such changes develop?

Morons unintentionally misusing language until their idiocy becomes the standard, and evil cunts foisting new meanings onto old words in order to manipulate the thought space and frames of reference of the populace.

And what happens when people push back against them?

Usually the morons and evil cunts win in the end because they have more persistence.

That begs the question how well these writers know their research. The singular they has been in use for several hundred years, but only for a hypothetical person.

      • Chipping Pioneer

I wrote an email to HR my last week of work to describe to them a positive interaction I had with a junior coworker. To anonymize said coworker, I used “they”.

I’m almost certain HR went combing through peoples’ profiles looking at their pronouns to try to identify to whom I was referring.

    • rhywun

No to all of this stupid shit.

My favorite example is when NYC Subway announcers changed “Ladies and gentlemen” to “Hello people”.

I was delighted the other day when some tool I was playing with created a git source code repository with the old default branch name “master” instead of the new woke default “main”. I have half a mind to go into all my repos and change any “main” I find to “master”. An easy way to push back.

      • R.J.

I find “Hello people” to be insulting.

“At Yale, I know exactly what that should look like. Courses on Catholic history should engage women’s voices. My students and I read the 12th-century anchorite Julian of Norwich, a saint in the Anglican faith and the first known woman to write a book in the English language.”

Sure, why not? Sounds like a blast.

Maybe, I’m looking forward to this one.

I was an undergraduate at Yale from 2014 to 2018. My freshman year, only 13 people took The Catholic Intellectual Tradition. Instead, my peers and I spent those formative years reading postcolonial theory, taking classes on gender and ethnic studies, and railing against the Western, or “Eurocentric,” canon. When I entered graduate school, my research on Latin American anti-poverty debates alerted me to Catholic intellectuals’ rich tradition of studying poverty, violence, suffering, and disease.

You teach Latin American and global history at an ivy league college and it took you until grad school to learn that the Catholics invented the term “social justice,” and that Jesuits’ liberation theology was putting it into practice before you were a tickle in your grandpa’s nutsack?

    Today I learned.

Jason’s wife is about a thousand times hotter than that singer.

    • Nephilium

And Garage beer was spun out of a different brewery. It appears to be a new trend for the light lager brands, where the brewery will test one under a new label, if it’s popular, they’ll spin it off into a subsidiary (or independent) brewery that only makes that style. Other breweries have been taking one of their flagship beers, and coming out with a lager extension of it.

Alexandra Pringle, the former head of Bloomsbury, said that you cannot expect a memoir to be a factual account of someone’s life and it was ‘not journalism’

    mem·oir (mĕm′wär′, -wôr′)
    n.
    1. An account of the personal experiences of an author.
    2. often memoirs An autobiography.
    3. A biography or biographical sketch.
    4. A report, especially on a scientific or scholarly topic.
    5. memoirs The report of the proceedings of a learned society.

Every one of those definitions sure seems to reflect a factual account of someone’s life or some topic. We have other words to describe fiction loosely based on real life people and events. Journalism isn’t the form of writing where truth is expected. In fact, journalism is the one form of writing where it should never be expected and is only ever delivered by accident.

Forte has been highly praised, also for making the movie kinda have a human to actually root for. Cena’s schtick apparently works in the flick. It took ~40 years, but they got it done. This week, I received a memo — presumably confidential — addressed to CBC News staff. It is authored by one Basem Boshra, who is the “Senior Director of Journalistic Standards and Public Trust at CBC News.” In Boshra’s memo, reporters are editors are told this:

“Do not refer to the Sept. 11 attacks as terrorist attacks.”
    Article content

Boshra states that all in bold letters, italicized, as if to emphasize the point. To make clear it is a directive, not a suggestion.

It goes on. “The hijackings led to passenger jet crashes,” it reads, again in italics. There is no recognition in the CBC memo — none — that “hijacking that leads to passenger jet crashes” is not a protest, or a vote. It is a terrorist act, full stop.

Heh, sent that to my friend in Toronto yesterday. Some people did some things…

Professionals in some industries, including audiovisual, theater and IT, have argued that these terms are, at best, inappropriate as direct analogs to sexual intercourse and, at worst, exclusionary in their assumption of binary gender.

Further, when people use male and female, they tend to refer to the two types of connector ends as genders. The Wikipedia entry on male and female connectors is one example. But as research over the past few decades has made clear, gender and sex are not synonymous.

As two researchers specializing in linguistic approaches to the study of technical communication, particularly technical editing, we wondered what editors thought about male and female for connector ends. Had they heard of arguments against their use? Had they advised writers to avoid the terms?

One Sandusky accuser is expected to recant his testimony

One of the accusers who testified more than 14 years ago that Jerry Sandusky sexually abused him is expected to recant his allegations at an upcoming appeal hearing for the former Penn State football assistant coach and Second Mile charity founder.

The man identified as Victim 10 during Sandusky’s 2012 trial on child sexual abuse charges and in court documents as “R.R.” said in a 2025 affidavit that he was extensively coached by investigators and prosecutors to make accusations that were “not willfully false, but induced under extreme psychological and institutional pressure.”

He is among the witnesses expected to testify at an evidentiary hearing scheduled for Sept. 8 in Bellefonte, where the now 82-year-old Sandusky will be in attendance.

R.R. initially said that Sandusky molested him in a swimming pool when he was about 11-years-old in 1997 after meeting him through the Second Mile, but over time his accusations grew to include refusing to perform a sex act Sandusky requested in a car that Sandusky never owned. At trial he testified about additional instances of abuse that had not been previously been disclosed, according to Sandusky’s post-conviction relief petition.

In his June 2025 affidavit, R.R. said that investigators told him his role was “critical to stopping a predator” and repeatedly encouraged him to say Sandusky had molested him, despite his “lack of clear or certain memory of any such conduct.”

“Master” and “slave” have different meanings than “primary” or “main” and “secondary”. The former implies a command structure.

I’m master of my car, for example, (slave does what it is told). I’m not the primary of my car, whatever the hell that means.

I thought the Conservative Party’s pledge to eliminate the CBC was stupid. In remote parts of a vast country, we need a broadcaster that fairly and accurately represents the news.

The author states that immediately after describing how the networks is flat-out lying.

That might be a lack of self-awareness world record.

    • Sensei

It’s how we feel about NPR. Although my understanding is the state wholly owns CBC.

Which does make me wonder given recent events…
