My Computer is a Stoic Test…I am Failing AGAIN

by | Aug 28, 2026 | I Am Lame, Stoic | 94 comments

Sorry folks, but my computer keeps giving me NOT RESPONDING.

I talked to DEG and R.J about installing Linux, but the damn thing has been acting fine, so I haven’t done it.

Yes, I did check the thermostat.

TOK, I remember you said you needed to be more Stoic about work issues, try to keep in mind that worrying about what you can’t control is a waste of time and energy.

If you keep finding things to worry about, try to do something constructive instead.

Remember the positives you have from your wife and gym, and downplay the negatives.

Maybe even take some time to relax instead of stressing out.

I’m not the best example, I am ready to throw this computer through the window.

I use the KDE flavored version of Ubuntu on all my desktop machines and my garage laptop (Dell, very Linux friendly). If you have a spare thumb drive with about 4G of space you can try it out from there without actually installing it on your machine. As long as you can boot from a USB drive, it’s a piece of cake.

    • R.J.

I walked him through all of that a few weeks ago. Sounds like there are mechanical issues cropping up which may indicate time to fully replace. I will throw out some suggestions in a moment.

      • R.J.

If you want to move entirely to Linux, this is a rugged laptop that would be a great choice:

        https://www.ebay.com/itm/257471463532

It would not convert well to Windows 11, the processor is old. But all the bones are tested and good. Honestly if you computer is ceasing to respond, you have either hard drive or memory problems.

      • ron73440

I appreciated your help, but since it stopped being retarded, I was still scared to mess with it.

This time it was a FireFox issue, I restarted the computer many times and eventually I typed this entry on Edge, but by the time it occurred to me try Edge it was past my bedtime.

Mine is an Asus All in one from maybe 7 years ago.

I worry about one part of the all-in-one going kaput before the others.

      • That Guy

These and Richard’s below are good suggestions. If it’s getting hot, it might just need a good cleaning.

      • R.J.

Here is just a box, with Linux Mint pre-installed. Nice box. You could just use your current all in one as a monitor, and recycle your keyboard:

        https://www.ebay.com/itm/287390948126

If your only reservation was concerns about speed going to Windows 11, I can certainly help you find a new Windows box. Still I would not go Amazon because the prices are nuts.

That looks like something I could deal with.

I don’t have any concerns with Windows 11, my computer is not able to go to it for reasons I don’t quite get.

I’m home now and while Edge is working fine, FireFox gives me a spinning circle and the not responding fadeout when I click anything.

Build a bootable optical disk or USB key with memtest86+ and test the RAM:

      https://memtest.org/

If the RAM is OK build a bootable optical disk or USB key with Linux and run the “smartctl” program from the “smartmontools” package to test the hard disk drive or flash disk drive:

      https://github.com/smartmontools/smartmontools/tree/main

      • PutridMeat

Pretty sure that the live install image will contain smartmontools; I’m nearly certain that the fedora install image does, though I haven’t looked at the comps recently. But if he runs a live image off a USB will probably already smart tools available

    • CPRM

I ran a netbook with a dead hard drive that way in college. If someone stole it, it would be worthless to them as the OS thumb drive was only in when I was using it. I could also boot into my own OS on the library computers. Only problem was getting the wifi card to be compatible with the puppy linux I was running, that was a tough battle.

  2. The Late P Brooks

More tail-chasing. Trying to make contact with an actual human being is just fucking impossible. Speaking of the enshittification of life, is every single home repair or service business now barricaded behind some sort of aggregator?

I even looked at the “angi” website. Do people really just blindly jump into this stuff without knowing what goes on behind the curtain? Got questions? Don’t worry. Download the app, clickety click. We’ll take it from here. All your troubles will be over.

I am not feeling especially stoic this morning.

    • Sean

Speaking of the enshittification of life, is every single home repair or service business now barricaded behind some sort of aggregator?

      Nope.

On the flip side, fuck ALL these people using Google assistant to screen their calls.

    • R.J.

I do not enjoy contractors. Mostly they only want to take big jobs, if you have a small problem they don;t feel it is worth their time. This is probably what you are running into.

  3. The Other Kevin

Wow, I get a personal stoic post? That’s quite an honor.

I think a big issue is that I’ve got other people around me that aren’t taking things stoically. My manager is questioning why some of my work, and that of another dev, are taking so long. Not our fault, but we still have to answer for it.

Regarding the gym, Mrs. TOK was super spicy about some things this week, and I live with her, so I’m hearing about it.

I have to deal with the problem, but also with people adjacent to the problem, which makes things more complicated. I will take your advice though, especially the relaxing part. Work in particular is burning me out lately, and I need some down time.

  4. ron73440

I had a discussion with my wife last night that irritated her.

She said that in her circle of 6 friends 3 of their mothers had a “rare” disease and she thought this meant it’s not rare, just Dr.s say it is.

I tried to explain that she didn’t know the whole picture and 6 people is way too small of a data set to determine anything.

She kept saying, “Don’t you think it’s odd?” And I told her I didn’t have enough information to have an opinion.

Apparently all she wanted me to do was to agree that it was odd.

    • Ted S.

It’s odd that Mrs. Ron gravitates toward people with family histories of exotic diseases.

    • creech

“Apparently all she wanted me to do was to agree”
Didn’t you learn that in “Marriage 101 for Dummies?” Remember: Happy Wife; Happy Life.

      • Brochettaward

The only way to make most* women happy is to treat her like a child while giving her the authority of an adult.

So whatever dumb thing comes out of her, you just smile and say you’re right dear with the same condescension you’d give to a five year old talking about his favorite dinosaur.

*Of course this doesn’t apply to any females posting here. Of course…

      • Sean

FR. It’s like his first day there.

      • ron73440

She got me because usually she doesn’t think that way.

Every now and then she remembers she is a woman, I guess.

    • R.J.

Whatever you do, don’t tell her to calm down. I learned that from reading Babylon Bee.

    • The Other Kevin

There are such thing as disease clusters, where something in the environment causes a group of people to get the same disease. So, another unknown factor.

    • Sensei

I don’t take my own advice with my own wife unfortuantely.

Dude, that is like Chick Management 101.

  5. kinnath

Windows updates over many years consumed all of my hard drive with useless stuff.

I bought a new drive. Then I needed to generate a bootable USB stick to reinstall windows onto the new drive.

Except you need enough space on the existing hard drive to build the installation files before you can generate the bootable USB stick.

So, I was forced to back up lots of my own data to an external drive and then delete if from hard drive to make that space.

Except, I already separate my data from the OS and applications on a second internal drive. So, I was forced to actually start uninstalling my applications to get enough room to make my installation USB stick.

    Truly fucking annoying.

    • The Other Kevin

I got my wife a Mac Mini about 15 years ago. After that long she still hates it. Recently we decided it’s time to get rid of it entirely and move everything to her laptop. She had years of photos on there, and I had to do some fancy backup work with 2T Seagate backup drives but I got it all done.

  6. Brochettaward

I think there’s a lot of humor being missed in Trump 2.0. Like shipping Jose and Diego off to some African shithole – literally the only place on Earth shittier than where they came from – and watching them bitch to a CBS crew about how they’ve been wronged is pretty much comedy gold to me. I was literally cracking up at the complete lack of self-awareness as a guy who didn’t speak English ranted and raved about how unfair it was to send him to a country where he doesn’t know the culture or speak the language from his shack in Africa.

I’d have told him he was lucky to have the shack and not a dung hut.

CBS is only appealing to the people who already hate Trump and have bought into the woe is the migrant story. There isn’t even the basic attempt to sell this as a sob story to a Trump voter. I suspect they can’t primarily because they legitimately have no fucking clue what motivates a Trump voter to begin with.

But that shit is funny. Shame comedy is dead.

    • Brochettaward

Laughing at Trump not getting Mexico to pay for a border wall was all fun and games for these people once. Oh look at his ridiculous hyperbole, he’s not going to do anything.

It’s all fun and games until you end up in Rhodesia, right Jose?

  7. The Late P Brooks

This is probably what you are running into.

What I keep running into are robot cut and paste “If you need [X] in [Y] we are your trusted local provider. Call this area code 866 number to speak to one of our friendly totally local representatives right in your neighborhood.”

Windows 11 desktop, complete with everything. It’s a refurb with a one-year guarantee. Greta for basic computing. If you want to play wargames with UnCivil you would want to pay more:

Speaking of PCs – I love both “upgrades” and “AI”

I’ve got the new version of Outlook pushed to my PC at work. Naturally it’s been “streamlined” with more wasted space. The server status is gone. My Copilot question since it’s a MSFT product:

    – New outlook – how to tell server connection

    Answer:

In New Outlook for Windows, Microsoft removed the old Exchange status indicator that used to show “Connected to Microsoft Exchange” in the status bar. There is currently no built-in connection status window equivalent to Classic Outlook.

You can still check connectivity a few ways:

Look at the bottom status area

If Outlook shows messages such as”Offline”,”Working Offline”, or sync errors, there is likely a connection issue.
If mail is sending and receiving normally, Outlook is connected…

    BS – my follow-up question:

    – Show me a picture of the “bottom status area” you are referencing

    Gaslighting AI:

I should correct my earlier guidance: in New Outlook, the traditional status bar at the bottom of the window is not currently available, according to Microsoft community discussions and user reports. The old status line that showed items such as”Connected to Microsoft Exchange” and”All folders are up to date” was part of Classic Outlook and is one of the features users commonly report missing in New Outlook.

So I can’t show you a screenshot of that area in New Outlook because it generally doesn’t exist there. What I was describing is the Classic Outlook status bar.

I am a Mac Tard so I cannot commiserate.

    • R C Dean

Same here. The hardware seems to last forever, the security problems are practically nonexistent, the updates don’t break everything. I’ll admit, I prefer using Word on a Windows machine, but that’s probably from decades of spending hours every day doing so.

      • The Other Kevin

I mentioned above, we had a Mac Mini for about 15 years and it’s still running just fine. The biggest problem is the drive is full, and it’s too old to get O/S updates, so it’s time to retire. My wife hates all things Apple, but I did like that Mac.

      • Michael Malaise

I eschew Word in favor of Google Docs. I figure everyone is spying constantly so it makes little matter where I type my useless thoughts.

      • R.J.

I did like my mac. Had a laptop for around 8 years. Prior to that I had macs going back to Apple IIe.
I switched to Windows because I need it so much for assisting with resumes and consulting.
And I have the good ‘ol Linux for here and for doing research.

    so tempting . . .

over at Salon, Manda talks about the High Cost of MAGA Manhood.

I am sure it is profound.

    • Ted S.

It’s not the “MAGA manhood” men who are murdering their children.

    • UnCivilServant

How is that in any way “tempting”? At most I’d just 🙄 and move on.

      • Ted S.

The correct response was “so desu ne”.

      • Sensei

        Let me Ted you, Ted

That’s romanized “sou”or the more rare “ō”. Pronounced like the English “so”, but elongate the “o” sound.

        OTH, Nice!

      • UnCivilServant

I want to crack jokes at TedS’ expense, but the problem is, I have no idea what he’s even trying to say.

I was hoping for a translation so I could come up with something.

      • Ted S.

It’s a transliteration of そうですね above, minus my not bothering to put the macron on the ō.

      • kinnath

I’ve also seen it transliterated with doubled vowels.

      • Sensei

Not Adahn, there are actually official ways to romanize Japanese.

Japan itself uses one system and Japanese instruction another.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hepburn_romanization

Oddly, buried close to me as I type this.

The weird thing is sometime the long vowel sound is “ou” and sometimes “oo” both pronounced long o.

Osaka written in hiragana is おおさか which romanizes as “oosaka”.

Tokyo is とうきょう romanized as “toukyou”.

      • Evan from Evansville

I don’t get the original phrase, the ‘correct’ one, or the ones in between. I was clueless to start about what the “correct response” was supposed to be, and none of the vacillations in ‘correction’ rectified the matter.

“Manosphere” is just new phrasing for ‘we really don’t like how men talk online when they think no one’s looking.’ Which is new phrasing for ‘we really don’t like people outside Our Group,’ which is really just new phrasing for ‘we don’t like the Other,’ which is really just rephrasing of ‘Everything within, nothing against, nothing outside Us.’

Social primates gonna social primate, yo.

    • EvilSheldon

I don’t really think that ‘not having to hang around with emotionally incontinent women or their simps’ is a cost. In fact, I would probably enter that on the income side of the ledger.

    • The Other Kevin

I’m sure she’s telling us all exactly what’s going through the mind of every Trump voter. They won’t say it out loud, but she knows.

  13. The Late P Brooks

    Trump says [X]; experts disagree

The U.S. has announced new economic sanctions aimed at loosening Iran’s hold on the Strait of Hormuz while counting on Middle East oil producers to quickly build new pipelines bypassing the key shipping route. But energy analysts say replacing shipping capacity through new infrastructure anytime soon is unlikely. The result is expected to be continued higher prices for consumers.

Alternatives will not be available overnight, therefor Trump is lying.

ps- he is an incompetent boob

    • Drake

Unless buried deep, a pipeline would be vulnerable to drones or guys with dynamite. On the other hand, much easier to fix than a burning supertanker.

Wouldn’t the bigger problem be a big enough port or distribution system at the receiving end of the pipeline? That sounds like a bigger project.

  14. Sensei

Golly – I wonder it what else it could have been?

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation on Thursday defended an internal memo directing its reporters and editors to refrain from describing the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks as “terrorist attacks,” telling Fox News Digital the guidance reflected its longstanding practice of attributing terms it considers politically and emotionally loaded.

“It is the practice of the CBC to exercise extreme caution before using the words ‘terrorist’ and ‘terrorism,'” CBC Public Affairs Director Kerry Kelly said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “The memo was a reminder of the longstanding practice that favours the use of these terms with attribution in our reporting.”
