Well, we made it home from humidity central to Washington’s drift smoke. It must be August here in Manly Time. It’s also going to hit 101 today. It may only be 15% humidity, but the combination of heat and smoke is going to force me inside to enjoy the sweetness that is central air conditioning.

Links?

The only that got mothballed is your business.

This chick is a straight up tard. We’ll see if Team Red can snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory again.

The best outcome would be the DOJ not pursuing appeal.

I’m gonna go with leaving it alone.

That’s a bold strategy, Cotton.

I swear this guy is getting advice from Beto.

No creature is too small for virtue signalling.

Yep. And next month, I’ll get a school supplemental tax bill that is 50% higher than my entire Idaho property tax bill.

The gift that keeps on giving.

Well, that’s it for me. Time to blow off the patio and pour a refreshing cocktail. Peace out, Glibbies.

The best outcome would be the DOJ not pursuing appeal.

Why? The way the ruling currently applies, it is a patchwork mess. It needs to be turned uniform.

  2. Spudalicious

If they appeal and win, suppressors, short barrel rifles and all other weapons remain under the nfa. Leave it alone, and let other legal challenges kill off the nfa.

    • UnCivilServant

By that logic, you shouldn’t sue to challenge any law. “We might lose” is a risk any suit takes. I don’t think the argument of keeping the registration would win at SCOTUS.

      • DEG

That was the NRA’s logic for a long, long time.

        Thankfully, things have changed.

IJ showed that losing at the Supreme Court isn’t necessarily the end. After losing Keto v New London, they started an effort to change eminent domain laws at the state level. It had mixed success.

      • Tres Cool

Tres Sr. always says, “don’t sue anyone unless you’re prepared to lose your ass in court”

      • Spudalicious

So you’re on the side of the DOJ appealing the decision?

      • Chafed

I’m saddened Tres Cool, Sr. hates lawyers.

      • Gustave Lytton

I still that was the goal of Heller, to torpedo once and for all 2A as protecting individual rights, but it went sideways with an unexpected decision.

Paywalled without an apparent click-around for me, but I’m reminded of when the Rev. GT was not yet a Rev and was working as a residence hall advisor at the Quaker college connected to his seminary. One of the dorms (thankfully, not ours) was home to lots of non-human residents, and the humans annually hosted a cockroach race (dubbed the [name of dorm ending in -ndy] 500.) One gal from Loozeeyanna had her folks send her some ringers from home. Times having changed as they have, I imagine that hallowed tradition has gone by the wayside.

    • UnCivilServant

Roaches are a hard no for me in terms of residences. Up there with bedbugs and neon-haired crazies.

      • Gender Traitor

I concur, and I confess I never attended the aforementioned festivities.

      • UnCivilServant

I wager there was alcohol involved.

And some contestants were stepped on.

      • Gender Traitor

As a Quaker school, it may have been a dry campus. (I honestly don’t recall for sure, but I don’t remember alcohol being a big problem at the time.) Which means that students would have been hard up for ways to amuse themselves.

      • UnCivilServant

I don’t think being a dry campus would really inhibit drinking.

      • DrOtto

The Coors 5 gal party ball and laundry hampers were invented for dry campuses.

I like stupid things, and that sounds really stupid. Just drugged out drunks cheering at the floor as cockroaches scamper. I’d go and it might, indeed, be delightful. But that’s really, really dumb.

“floor buffer rodeo” in the barracks

Bet they can’t do that now.

      • Nephilium

Nugget baseball was sometimes played in the grill area of the McDonald’s I worked at. Long overcooked nugget thrown, bat is a bun spatula (think about the size of a pizza peel, but metal and thinner).

      • UnCivilServant

How many buns are you moving at one time with that thing?

      • Nephilium

        UCS:

It’s been ~30 years, but from memory, 6 for the Big Mac buns (all the three layer toaster would take at a time), 12 for the regular buns, 8 for the seeded buns.

      • Evan from Evansville

I figur w the ‘modern’ generation and what not, there’d likely be even more floor-buffnin’ rodeos between men in such environs. (The clown’s the fluffer. *tap tap*)

TOO LOCAL NEWS: Analyzing the data on NH’s Hands Free Law

Ten years later, there is no evidence it did anything but inconvenience safe drivers and jack up car prices, as every model had to have hands-free tech, even the sort that was more distracting than talking with a cell phone held to your ear.

That’s a revelation to some, inspires disbelief in others, but here’s something even more startling. When I asked the New Hampshire Department of Safety for crash and fatality data for the past ten years, guess what they told me. We can only give you five. The records are purged after that.

Being the skeptic that I am, my first thought was, what are you trying to hide? My second was, good thing I already had it for 2014-2020. This isn’t the first time I’ve asked, and it used to be a lot easier. One contact, no RTK, just ask as a member of the media and they spit it out in a few days.

To their credit, the five years of data I did get is detailed. Broken down by town, crash type, for each year, with totals. Both 2021 and 2026 are half years. 7/30/21 to 7/30 26. That took ten days after they agreed to provide it, which took more than five days to decide. No car fire. I was in no hurry, so my thanks to them for the information, but I’m not buying the need to purge after five years’ schtick, because I’m skeptical of government and this would eventually make it impossible to expose flaws in the thinking.

    • Chafed

A well intended law didn’t work as intended in practice. Color me shocked.

    • (((Jarflax

Yes, pass laws that fine you for picking up your phone, then install TV screens in all cars, and remove all mechanical buttons and dials that can be manipulated by feel, replacing them with multi tiered menus on the touchscreen! This is the way! It’s much safer now!

      • Nephilium

It gets even better. In the most recent rental I had, they had a dial to select the gear, which was on the dash board… next to the volume knob.

      • (((Jarflax

I drove a rental like that a few years ago. Absolutely brilliant design! Nothing could possibly go wrong! My current car is a joy, I especially love having to turn off the auto shut-off button every single time I get in, because it is impossible to permanently turn it off. And having to click ok to the pop up screen that instructs me to obey the law and drive safely, before I can get to the stupid button to turn off the auto shut off button. And the really cool part where my car gives me semi-random collision warnings if I say, drive on a curvy road where sometimes other vehicles are straight ahead, or accelerate to turn right when the car in front is going straight without waiting for it to get 100 feet ahead of me, or park in my parking pad that has grass behind it…

      • DEG

they had a dial to select the gear, which was on the dash board… next to the volume knob.

I looked at the Genesis G80 to replace my previous daily driver. One of the reviews pointed out that the gear selector knob is right next to the knob for menu navigation for the info-tainment center. The reviewer said his passenger tried using the menu navigation knob but by mistake turned the gear selector knob. Knocked the car out of gear. I decided not to get a Genesis G80.

      • DEG

I especially love having to turn off the auto shut-off button every single time I get in, because it is impossible to permanently turn it off.

My daily driver and my remaining fun car are like that. But, it’s easier to do so than in the rental you had.

      • Grumbletarian

There may be aftermarket solutions to have your car remember your auto-start/stop selection. It’s usually a wiring harness that you plug in somewhere. For me new truck I had to pull down the glove box to get to where it was.

    TOO LOCAL NEWS: Trolling Massachusetts

Gov. Kelly Ayotte is having some fun with Massachusetts ahead of that state’s sales tax holiday this weekend.

On Friday morning, the governor sent a billboard truck into downtown Boston to advertise New Hampshire’s lack of a sales tax.

Bay Staters will get a break from sales tax on Saturday and Sunday, but Ayotte said she wanted them to know they can enjoy going tax-free in New Hampshire year-round.

    • Evan from Evansville

I thoroughly enjoy the trolling, but to what end? Mocking? Good job! Attracting more Massholes to NH? Uh. Tenuous benefits…?

      • DEG

At least since the ‘Rona Panic, MA folks moving to NH have done so because they like that NH is not MA.

      • UnCivilServant

But do they still vote like Massholes for Massholish Policies that will turn NH into Massataxes?

      • DEG

        UCS, you wrote:

But do they still vote like Massholes for Massholish Policies that will turn NH into Massataxes?

        I wrote:

they like that NH is not MA

      • UnCivilServant

Yes DEG, we have observed people who like that the place they move to isn’t like the place they fled, but are so lacking in self awareness that they vote for what ruined the place they fled. So them liking that it is not Mass does not preclude voting for its destruction.

      • DEG

When I moved to NH, lots of folks were coming up from MA to NH because they liked the lower cost of living. They didn’t do it because they liked that NH wasn’t MA.

Since the Rona Panic, people have been coming from MA to NH because NH isn’t MA.

That’s three times I’ve answered your question.

      • UnCivilServant

No, that’s three times you’ve avoided the question.

      • DEG

No, that’s three times you’ve avoided the question.

        Wrong.

      • UnCivilServant

It was a simple yes or no. You repeatly made statements which required making inferences based upon implication that does not have actual correlation in observed behavior.

Yes or No, do they still vote for the policies that destroyed Mass?

      • DEG

No, which is what I’ve been telling you. That’s four times.

      • UnCivilServant

Thank you for finally answering it once.

There are plenty of examples of people who leave places like California or New York or Massataxes for freer pastures then keep voting for what made the places they left unfree so “they liked that it was not like where they used to be” said NOTHING about their voting patterns.

      • DEG

        I answered it four times.

Those people you’re talking about left for cheaper pastures.

      • UnCivilServant

I’m unclear how you conclude that giving ambiguous insufficient information counts as answering. Unless “said something in response even if it doesn’t contain the necessary and sufficient information” qualifies.

Have you secretly started running for office?

      • Raven Nation

DEG: has the migration to NH been of sufficient numbers to noticeable push up the price of real estate/housing? Or has the supply kept pace with the population?

      • DrOtto

An insufficient answer is still an answer.

      • DEG

I’m unclear how you conclude that giving ambiguous insufficient information counts as answering.

        I gave you the information.

You read way too much into what other people are doing. They aren’t thinking very deeply. They’re thinking, “it’s cheaper” and not thinking about why or anything else.

I’ve also posted before information on the voter registration changes in NH. So if you needed extra information, I’ve posted here before.

      • DEG

has the migration to NH been of sufficient numbers to noticeable push up the price of real estate/housing? Or has the supply kept pace with the population?

We have seen a spike in housing since the Rona Panic in areas close to Massachusetts.

Housing, in southern NH, has been more expensive than average for the country outside New England and cheaper than southern New England since before I moved here. As a concrete example, apartment vacancy rates in southern NH were lower than average for the country when I moved here and have been continued to be so. I remember relatives of mine, when I moved here, commenting that my rent was more than their mortgage in PA.

Regulation has restricted building since before I moved here. The last legislative term (not sure if both sessions or just the first session) passed laws, which the governor signed, removing some of those restrictions. I’ve seen some articles claiming that housing starts have spiked in NH.

      • UnCivilServant

From what I hear it’s greasy with a hint of trichinosis.

Actually a lot of Trichinosis – cook it thoroughly.

    • DrOtto

@ Rhy – as luck would have it, I’m watching the same Columbo episode you saw last week. Hector Elizondo as a sheikh.

      • Evan from Evansville

Oooooh, that could be my evening Media thingy! It’s creepy Dad’s likely watching it downstairs. Pluto shall be checked. First, gotta take Peabody out. His Cone of Shame still on as his surgery wound heals. He’ll try to smell something on the ground and he can’t reach his nose to it. On concrete, it bangs and scrapes along and keeps him at an inch distance, and it’s just too damn funny.

      • rhywun

I’m rotating around various Treks on Pluto.

I’m all Columbo’ed out I’ve seen all of them too many times lately.

      • R.J.

        Batman is on post-Svengoolie.

      • rhywun

Svengoolie rings a bell… I think I had that in NYC and it’s on a channel I don’t get anymore.

    • Chipping Pioneer

      …bear?

      WTF does that taste like?

      Rancid grease.

      • rhywun

Mmmm where do I sign up?

  16. Brochettaward

Just installed Moncole. I’m using the dark reader extension and the bar where the user name of commenters is displayed is blue and the name unreadable without highlighting. Anyone else have this going on?

    • Brochettaward

Just disabled dark reader for this site, but this is one of the sites I’d most want it for given the bright white. This is not a case where white is right I’m afraid. My eyes are going on me. May need peepers soon. Getting in the way of my Firstin’.

      • R.J.

Use the “filter” mode on Dark Reader and the blue bar goes away.

      • Brochettaward

Yea played with settings on it to adjust layout some so it’s not so bright, but I get the features of Monocle still like the new posts highlighted. Thanks.

Fuck you, gun Jesus. I don’t need a cZ75 Legend.

      Yes you do!

“Old-Timers’ Day in The Bronx took on an unexpected somber tone when Tommy John released a statement through the Yankees in which he said “goodbye to everyone” as he battles health issues.

“I want to thank the Yankees organization [and] the Steinbrenner family for giving me this opportunity to say goodbye to everyone, along with all the friends [and] fans who followed me throughout my 26-year career.”
    —
Of John’s 288 career victories — the highest total of anyone not in the Hall of Fame aside from scandal-scarred Roger Clemens — 164 came after his surgery.
    —
John, in 2024, revealed he had bladder cancer, but it’s unclear if that is what he is dealing with now.”

Hope the best. Crazy story, and damn good job Dr. Frank Jobe. (Rant against coaches ‘teaching’ speed rather than location, on hold)

Mini-rant on why people are obnoxious. I was looking for an extension to download Youtube videos for Firefox. Most of them are basically trying to get people to pay. This is the internet and I don’t pay for shit.

Went digging for some other way or best way to do it. You run into a bunch of people recommending yt dlp. Shit you have to use with command prompts which I suspect they want to show off that they actually know how to run all the commands they want off the top of the head and they just keep telling people who don’t want to mess with all that on top of downloading latest python and shit that it’s easy.

There are multiple tools you can download that keep the yt dlp updated but create a GUI around it (and this is the basis as I understand it for the browser extensions anyway that fucks are trying to charge people for to begin with, though I’m just going off a quick search here).

So basically you don’t need the fucking command prompts or any of that bullshit. And the application itself is simple, sleek, and fast with no manual updating.

Of course none of these assholes would just provide those options to the people asking on sites like Reddit.

    • rhywun

I use an app called “4K Video Downloader+”. You get some number of free downloads per day. It updates frequently to keep abreast of Youtube changes. Works great for me.

      • Brochettaward

The one I have is based completely off the freeware. It’s just going to be for maybe some Youtube stuff here or there.

My main beef is with people over complicating their recommendations. Like how many people want to fuck with command prompts and python over a simple application?

Even if you know how all the commands in the world I’d rather just click two buttons.

Because they claim to be firsters?

  20. Mojeaux

I am dismayed that my lovely father-daughter bonding moment last night was Heidi’d.

    • Brochettaward

I don’t know what that means or whether it’s good or bad.

      • Mojeaux

The Heidi game. My weekly Dunham installment was derailed by technical difficulties.

      • Brochettaward

OH. I thought you were talking about like an actual thing with your daughter.

The glitch started right as I got the new laptop up and running so I was like is this the site being it’s usually glitchy self or is something weird going on with my end. Had to test elsewhere.

      • Evan from Evansville

Sorry, that was unfortunate timing, indeed. *Playful rub behind ear*

I have many mysterious powers, but that’s not one of ’em.

My Idaho property tax bill is over 52% ‘education.’

As are my income taxes and sales taxes.

Auction off the schools and end the taxes.

    • Fourscore

      You’re a funny guy, 3door.

A more likelihood would be to consolidate your school(s), give the kids an extra hour’s bus ride (each way) and raise your taxes to pay for the buses.

      • R C Dean

        Electric busses. That’ll learn ‘em.

    And Good Morning to all!

Just starting to get day light, 58 degrees American, calm. Another beautiful day in the woods.

        Mornin’.

Hey there! How are you today?

      • rhywun

        Tired. Need ☕️.

    • rhywun

      Repeat.

      That’s OK. 🎶

      • Sean

I’ve kinda lost track. YouTube used to show me previously played notes.

      I blame Sensei.

The local pot shop is a hangout for seedy, violent characters? I am shocked.

      • Ted S.

I thought the pot shop boys sang 80s synth music. /shrugs

      • Beau Knott

Since when are pot heads violent?

      • rhywun

I don’t think it’s the pot so much as the nature of the hangout.

I will admit I sometimes cross the street rather than pass through the sketchy crowd that is always hanging out at the one near me.

Southern Ireland to start campaign against those who question their propaganda

“Tradwife” influencers and other online trends seen as pressuring women into “particular care roles” are to be challenged as part of a Government-funded awareness campaign.

A new national strategy for women and girls warns about the misogyny of the “manosphere” and “tradwife” influencers who “promote restrictive, stereotypical roles for women and girls”.

Never mind how much of this is a response to the campaigns from governments and the elite who want to pressure men into believing they’re broken women.

    • rhywun

How dare you try to discredit any of the incredibly necessary work of the Department of Children and Equality… LOL WTF

There are times when I believe that life is a dream because everything seems so unreal.

In the reality of my youth, girls wore dresses, boys wore pants. We knew who was who. It wasn’t discriminatory, it was reality and we enjoyed our gender roles.

Was it Jesse Jackson that said “You can be anything” or works to that affect?. I don’t think he meant that literally, I can’t be a hippopotamus, for example.

There are times when I believe that life is a dream

        It COULD be…

I thought Ireland was about to pop off?

      Twitter lied to me?

      🤯

      • Ted S.

The impression I get is that there’s a substantial disconnect between the governing class and the people, whom the governing class want to dissolve and replace in the Brechtian sense.

The online right consistently overstate what can be done, much like they do about every other political figure speaking up against the establishment.

    • Sean

      @Beau

      Don’t make me say it…

      • Sean

        Bleh. Misthread.
