This is my review of Athletic Brewing Atlética Mexican Style Lager:
The internet is awash in yet another absurd debate. Apparently, someone affiliated with Charlie Kirk’s outfit had a startling discovery (TW: Fox News).
A debate over whether a burrito should cost $20 has ignited a Republican civil war over affordability and the party’s appeal to younger voters ahead of the midterm elections.
The clash began Wednesday when Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet shared a college student’s complaint that basic purchases have become prohibitively expensive.
“One of our TPUSA college students gave me his take on affordability: ‘A burrito shouldn’t cost $20,’” he posted to X on Wednesday. “Yeah, a lot of this is a hangover from Covid and Biden-era inflation, but the lived experience is the same: It just feels like basic things cost too much.”
Where in the hell is a burrito $20? Can that really be right? Well… I recall a burrito my son ordered after my stepdad bought everyone lunch at a Sinaloa Style Mexican restaurant. My son thought a lobster burrito sounded ridiculous. So my stepdad did what he always does and issued a dare. So my son ordered the most expensive dish on the menu, which was a $25 lobster burrito (beans, rice, chips included of course). Reminded me of the time he dared me to eat all the wasabi for $20 when I was a kid but yielded when I asked for double or nothing….he was paying in cash and needed to pay the bill…sushi for 4 was about $50 in the 90’s.
Anyways, this “debate” was a standard Boomercon vs. Zoomerwaffen generational divide over affordability with the Boomercons thinking the Zoomerwaffen are just not doing what they did when they were young and poor as hell: quit eating fancy burritos from Chipotle, and bootstrap already you goddamn kids!
Yes, I put Eyepatch McCain in the Boomercon category even if he is technically a Millennial. To settle this, I am going to do something controversial to both groups: research this on the internet…
A steak burrito from Chipotle in my neighborhood (zip code 85032) costs $12.87.
A comparable burrito made by actual Mexicans, and frequented by actual Mexican migrant workers in my neighborhood also costs around $12.
In fact the most expensive one they sell is $16 (¡El Gordo!). This does not include Doordash which I never use. The photo below is my usual chorizo breakfast burrito. I’ll let you decide which fine dining establishment is better.
Obviously, the problem here is The Jews™ the rampant inflation caused by nonstop government spending for the better part of a decade! Technically this started in the 70’s but WTF happened in 2020, again? Something controversial to neither group since this fun fact seems to go over both their heads.
I have engaged in some sort of apostasy. Yes, I’ve been drinking some of the Athletic Brewing Co offerings, particularly during the week. If you are experimenting with a bulk and cut cycle in your 40’s please take note—these still add up. Does it taste like beer? Sort of. I want to point out Mexican style lagers have a tendency to be proxies for water anyways, especially if you’re in Mexico and still believe the local water will give you a gastrointestinal illness (fun fact: it probably will, but so will Chipotle). Which means the amount of alcohol is pretty low to begin with. So you might actually find this to be surprisingly not awful in the same sense one would find ground bacon snuff in place of actual Copenhagen. Which is a bar low enough to trip over. I wouldn’t be surprised at all at an Uber-delivered burrito being twenty bucks. The problem is with the asshole who can’t motor himself to the cheap, local drive-thru.
I mean, if you are getting a burrito of any size on Doordash for just $20 you aren’t tipping much. Chipotle and any of the chain burrito places are like $15 easy unless you just want beans. And I love how they all list the price of the burrito based on the price of one with just beans and no meat. Don’t even think about adding anything fancy like queso or guac as a peasant. It’ll break you.
And fast food is a bit cheaper, but not by much and also just shittier and less filling. Taco Bell has become straight up absurd and yet the food even smaller. Just on principle I refuse to touch that shit. It is shit and the only good part of it was that it was dirt fucking cheap. No longer since the Covid years.
Florida kind of sucks for Mexican food compared to Texas. We have the worst sort of browns frankly. Cuban food blows. I blame the commies. No good food comes out of commie shitholes.

Former state Rep. Dr. Patty Hymanson, a neurologist from York, called out Collins for recently saying she would again vote to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, whose vote helped overturn Roe v. Wade.
“Kavanaugh was a deciding vote to overturn Roe, and Collins was the deciding vote for Kavanaugh,” Hymanson said. “As a physician, as a Mainer, as a woman, I find Senator Collins’ lack of remorse deeply troubling.”
Hymanson also warned that national Republicans continue pursuing new abortion restrictions, pointing to efforts to limit access to abortion medication and last year’s federal cuts to Planned Parenthood funding.
Dr. Patrick Connolly, a family physician in Portland, said Collins also bears responsibility for rising health insurance costs after repeatedly voting against extending enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits.

Family and I just returned from a 4-day jaunt to NYC. They had never seen it. I’ve been there many times for work and have never done the touristy thing. We walked the equivalent of about 35 miles since Tuesday.
Had a great time. I think for all of the teeth-gnashing over Mamdani I think the city now feels to big and powerful for one man to really wreck it, but I am sure he’ll try.
Finally convinced the daughter to ride the subway to save some shekels.
We did Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, 9/11 Museum, Top of the Rock, Natural History Museum and Guggenheim in addition to walking around Times Square (which sucks)
I didn’t love the 9/11 Museum because I feel it’s strange to document a terrorist tragedy like that, but it was interesting. Guggenheim I just did to see the architecture.
It’s not just one man and that ‘strength’ is very dependent on the vast wealth flowing through the city. When they push things to the point that Wall Street decides to move elsewhere it will crash fast.
It’ll be really funny when they learn that it was not, in fact, diversity that was their greatest strength when the diverse people are left in poverty and begin eating one another. Both literally and figuratively if it gets bad enough.
The Hatians of NYC will of course start with the pets before it gets to cannibalism.
I’d argue that Wall Street won’t leave as it is habitual and there is such a self-perpetuating machine aspect to the entire place. There’s construction and rehabilitation of buildings left and right.
He’s going to have to go whole hog to really beat it down. The financial sector dwarfs a Hollywood who can go elsewhere if things get too prohibitive.
I think that NYC goes as America goes, and not necessarily the other way around.

Sure inertia and reputation are powerful, right up until they aren’t. Nothing happening on Wall Street has to be there. The amenities of New York would reform wherever the money went in nothing flat.

I’ve heard that is the correct way to see the Guggenheim. I considered doing that a couple weeks ago but walked down the High Line instead.
Well the shitty part was the main ramps were closed for new exhibitions. But you still get to see the place. It’s a lot smaller than it looks in pictures. Also, they have Picassos, Cezannes, Van Goghs, and Monets. They also have some terrible modern art but a rather large Warhol.

Athletic is my non-alcoholic beer of choice. Their Mexican is pretty good, IIRC, perhaps their best. I have their Hazy IPA in the fridge along w their (better) wheat.
They do very good work, IMO. The lack of ethanol is a weakness, but, uh, kinda the point.

That’s a fun thing about art museums for me. I’m far more interested in the historical side of art than the artistic ‘value,’ though exceptions are frequently made. Took the Boys to some art museum here in Indy and they had a lovely sarcophagus and a lot of medieval, religious works. I could’ve stayed for a lot longer.
