I have an ex-SOCOM buddy who’s down at the Space and Missile Defense Symposium in Huntsville this week, and he’s been sending back pics of stuff that would curl your hair. I returned in late June after a long break. I still am tired at work. Then I realized that work just sucks.
I’ve been watching Dark Skies, an adaptation of Tony Hillerman books my mom loved.
It’s set on a Navajo reservation in the 1970s so when one of the characters bought Royal Basmati brand rice at the local whatever-they-call-bodegas-in-Navajo it yanked me out of the immersion.
However, even though the stories have gone downhill, the continuity has gotten much better.
The most recent series started with a closeup of a single-stack magazine which then was loaded… with 9mm. I immediately thought this was an error until it turned out that the gun was a no-shit P-08. Likewise at the scene of a gunfight I was wondering why in addition to casings from the aforementioned P-08 there were “ejected” .38 casings on the ground a flashback did in fact show a guy dumping and attempting to reload his revolver. I have no idea if the electronics are period appropriate since my family did not have a cassette tape player in the 1970s.

Audio cassette tapes were introduced in 1963. CDs started their takeover in the 1980s, so the 1970s would be prime cassette years, though not ubiquitous

I recall very few cassette decks in the 70’s, the players and cassettes were expensive. AM/FM 8 track players ruled the 70’s. I remember a stereo system I bought in the late 80’s that had a dual cassette deck that allowed you to copy one cassette to another and record mix tapes. I never bought many cassettes but I recorded a lot of music from FM radio. On Sunday nights the local FM station would play entire albums uninterrupted and urge listeners to record them.
Similarly, it took a long time for CD’s to dominate over cassettes. The 80s were definitely dominated by cassettes even though CDs came out in the early 80s. The players were crazy expensive and the discs cost extra too.

AI can offer smaller businesses ways to enhance their marketing/advertising/design but it comes IMHO at a pretty steep cost.
You lose a singular identity and voice since AI optimizes for average nearly every time, so you end up looking like everyone else.
Example – for a small skateboard shop I bought x-rays of broken bones from Amazon, affixed stickers with their logo and QR code to their Instagram (much better than a website for most small biz) and another sticker with the tagline DIE WITH STYLE on them and put them in places (Guerilla-style) where light would pass through so people could see them.
This gives them something truly unique to attract customers. It’s worked really well over the past few weeks to drive interest and business.
This is the kind of work I do beyond the normal logo/identity/ads stuff.

UCS- I’ve never done books but I’m certainly open to the challenge. People DO judge books by their covers. And I see time and time again (just click on a Sarah Hoyt link on Instapundit) so many books in the self-publishing space that have absolutely dreadful covers that make them look cheap (not in a good way) and don’t really sell the story.
I still want to try to hire book cover designers as art directors in my shop because the best of them really understand how to distill a complicated story down into simple, attention-grabbing imagery. That’s what art directors have to do.
Book cover art, especially F&SF is a wonderful world with great production and some incredible artists. I know a ton of people who buy vintage copies just for variations of the art and design.

Post-storm update:
About half of customers are still without power. My mom got it back at her house, but my brother, sister, and sister-in-law did not. The gym is without power, but I worked out today and the floors are dry with no damage. We want to run fans and a dehumidifier for a while after the power comes on before we put things back together. But surrounding businesses are coming online so that’s a good sign.

Locally it’s an outdoor (often homemade) stove with a stovepipe that vents the smoke away.
