Last Thursday of the Month Afternoon Links

by | Sep 24, 2026 | Daily Links, Florida | 61 comments

It is, indeed, the final Thursday in September. Which means NEXT Thursday, my wife and kids will want my “help” – and by that I mean they’ll want me to do most of the work – putting up Halloween decorations. So I got that to look forward to. Tonight my little kids want to go to the school roller skating fundraiser. Its going to be the greatest shitshow on 8 wheels. But you guys want your links… I gotcha

That crazy snatch will make a man crazy.

Based on previous winners, this guy is a shoe-in for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Ohh shit. If our soldiers and saliors just have to be good at XBox to be effective, the enemy is fucked.

“The US military has been deploying lasers in the Strait of Hormuz to knock out regime hardware, taking out “drones and incoming cruise missiles at a much lower cost than using more expensive kinetic weapons like missiles,” the Department of War recently confirmed.”
…

“Somewhat surprisingly, the laser weapons are operated by soldiers using reconfigured Xbox game console controllers.”

I hope he gives our esteemed visitor a giant plush Pooh bear. Xi visits Trump.

Today’s music. It might be AI, but it talks to me today.

Brett L

Brett set out to find America, the real America, the America of strip malls and serial killers, of butthole waxing and kelp smoothies, of cocaine and maggots. He sought it in the most American part of America—Florida: swamp gas and fever dreams, where love arrives on a rickety boat and leaves when it doesn't have the money for its fourth abortion. Oh, where has Brett gone? He’s drinking at the neck of America’s wang, chewing its foreskin and working its shaft. Brett is becoming legend. Brett can never die. Brett can never die. Brett is America, facedown in his own patriotic puke: the red his blood, the white his stomach lining, and the cold, cold blue his gas station slushie, spiked with coconut rum and tetracycline.

Tonight my little kids want to go to the school roller skating fundraiser.

I didn’t think rollerskating rinks were still a thing. The one I used to visit as a kid closed down by the time I was in high school, and I honest to god haven’t seen one since. Same for stand alone bowling alleys.

It’s actually kind of weird getting old in this environment. When I was a kid there were still cultural institutions and artifacts that kind of bridged the gap between me and my parents. If I had a kid right now, they’d be totally and completely unable to relate to almost anything I did as a kid.

    • The Other Kevin

There are still a few roller rinks in our area. They are shit holes and the cops are always there to stop fights.

      • Suthenboy

I remember them all being that way.

      • DEG

There is one in the area where I grew up.

They don’t requires masks if you are fully vaccinated.

There are restrictions on kids being there after certain times.

        Times have changed.

    • creech

But roller skating didn’t get them ready for military service. Today’s kids, playing their video games, will jump right into being able to fire lasers at incoming drones from whatever flavor of the month hornet’s nest the next president sticks the nation’s dick into.

      • Gdragon

“But roller skating didn’t get them ready for military service.”
        ——-

What if it did but we just didn’t correctly utilise their skills? The roller war would at least be super fun to watch.

Another good point, from my same-year compatriot. Our generation is the last to be aware of pre-internet life, growing up with the changes. Facebook in 2005, my first year at IU. I grew up biking to libraries and the nearby (small) mall. I understand what my nephews are up to, but they don’t understand their parents’ childhoods, to a worse extent than *we* didn’t understand *our* grandparents’.

Bubble people with robotic pets which will become robotic partners ASAP, baby-making as well. We’re happily walking into Demolition Man. I’ll be Sandra’s savior.

    • Nephilium

The skating rink I used to go to as a school kid is still open. United Skates of America, we were taught puns from an early age.

    • Threedoor

The local one was still profitable but the owners wanted to retire and couldn’t find anyone to buy them out.

So they sold to the state which tore down the building and built a new expensive one for the offices of another state subsidized health care swindle.

I was certain this would be a never-ending war, but now I’m not so sure.

Regarding the feature image… my wife somehow lived her entire life not knowing that jai alai existed until she saw it in a cop show the other day. I never saw it played, but my family used to vacation in Florida every year so as a kid I saw the billboards and buildings.

Miami Vice opening, The Substitute, etc.

      • Pat

Should have been in GTA: VC and now GTA VI, tbh.

      • The Other Kevin

I feel sad for my wife. She grew up in a lower income family so she didn’t watch much TV and had no access to cable. That was about half my 80’s experience.

      • DEG

It used to be big in Rhode Island.

    • Michael Malaise

Mad Men had a brief subplot about the agency helping market Jai Alai to the masses.

      • Nephilium

        Sport of the future!

    • Threedoor

      “jai alai”

Something else I have to look up.

      No idea what this is.

      • Threedoor

        So something like lacross?

Which I had not heard of until the Duke scandal.

North eastern rich kids and weird games.

CAVE CREEK, AZ (AZFamily) — The former bodyguard accused of having an affair with former Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema is facing felony charges for allegedly breaking into her home and destroying over $200,000 worth of property.

Someone could literally raze my home to the ground Waco style and not cause $200,000 of property damage.

    • Suthenboy

You were not a Senator, were you?

      • Pat

You were not a Senator, were you?

I was not. And if nominated, I will not run. If elected, I will not serve.

Good to see you btw, it’s been a while.

    • Brett L

Well something like 60% of it was destroyed paintings. They were probably Hunter Biden originals.

    • slumbrew

      … her Cave Creek home…

      Are not doing phrasing anymore?

      • Pat

Lol. If I can find the time to squeeze in a mini split install this year before winter hits I’ll be around $82k into a house I could probably sell for 75k. On the bright side, I have no debt of any kind, and compared to folks 100 years ago I live a life of unbridled opulence.

    • EvilSheldon

Just as long as they didn’t damage the gun safe or the guitars…

    • Threedoor

      Hunters paintings aren’t cheep.

Based on previous winners, this guy is a shoe-in for the Nobel Peace Prize.

*Shoo-in (somebody had to be that asshole, and today that foot is me). But yeah, I would think filming Hamas beating Jewish hostages and covering it up was almost a prerequisite.

    • Brett L

      Shoo-in

I thought about that as I typed it, but I’m trying to overcome my homophonaphobia.

    • Suthenboy

If I get one my response would be “What the fuck did I ever do to you?”
Like everything the left touches it has turned to shit and specifically that price is a mark of shame.

      • creech

I’m too lazy to look but I bet if one saw a list of all the Nobel Peace Prize winners from the beginning, the Glibs would be able to find war mongers, criminals, grifters, and various other unsavory things about at least half of them.

      • Suthenboy

I was going to ask how many warlords that eat babies are on that list.

      • Pat

I mean, not for nothing, but the prize was created by the inventor of dynamite.

    • Beau Knott

Carry-over from the last post — Pat, *thanks* for the pointer to Bombay Bramble! I had no idea it existed. (I don’t drink much anymore & so don’t browse the liquor stores or liquor aisles.)

      • Pat

You bet! I actually hadn’t encountered it until about 6 months ago when it showed up on the shelf of my local liquor store. I love gin, blackberries, and raspberries so I gave it a shot. It’s good stuff. I ended up mostly drinking it either neat or with a little seltzer and lime.

      • Beau Knott

Yup, raspberries and blackberries are favorites, and I’ve long loved gin. It’s supposed to be available here, so I’m hoping to score a bottle when I’m next at Kroger.

Don’t worry, the male gaze in Gaza are safe. The gays honed in on their package, as mail privilege is assertively dominant in Islamic culture. Female gaze are still in rooftop danger.

The pro-Pali Progressives remain utterly baffling, blinded by female gaze on Piker/ MomDaddy or simply Jew hatred. (Followers, they all are, these women. That much is clear. And whom they follow? Rather telling.)

      • Pat

The pro-Pali Progressives remain utterly baffling

You must dissonate your cognate, grasshopper. Keep in mind, the issue is never the issue, the issue is always the revolution.

      • Evan from Evansville

Correct. Rhy also has brought up a fantastically germane point: “Queer” just means “Commie.” Same with non-binary. To our point, especially highlighted, queers for Palestine sounds like people volunteering, signing up for early MAiDing, happily marching to the ditch with their own coffin.

      • EvilSheldon

‘Non-binary’ doesn’t always mean ‘commie’. But it does always mean ‘insufferable attention seeker’.

Then, over roughly eight months, Bernstein says the assistant siphoned roughly $3.2 million from the Ridgewood couple, at one point charging $324,000 in a single month on a credit card with a $50,000 limit.

Granted, my sole credit card has a limit south of $10,000, but how the fuck do you charge $324,000 on a card with a $50,000 limit? Even back in the ’90s I remember card declines due to credit limit exhaustion being a thing. Is this our glorious AI future?

Cox has sent me my I-9 paperwork and some other stuff I’m not supposed to start until (“or after”) my first day, Oct. 5. Rather glad I don’t have to touch that other stuff, but am glad I’m aware of it. Reminds me of Seinfeld when Elaine’s building-mate stops saying hello to her so she confronts him about his shift in behavior.

“So I said, ‘Fine! I didn’t want to say hello anymore either, but I wanted you to know that I’M aware of it!'”
    ===
Ten days of no real responsibilities, just tying things up. Would really love to meet up with MN Munchkin in Cedar Rapids, but that’s likely… 15-20%? That’d be such a strange meetup. I kinda doubt we would NOT erupt in a passionate ‘weekend,’ but that’s not the primary aim. (It WOULD be welcome…) We both feel so estranged back ‘home,’ in oddly overlapping but opposite ways. Much explosion of talk.

I don’t prefer a cookie cutter life, but a few more ‘regularly’ shaped treats would be appreciated. Big Things on the way! I will be fantastically pleased if I gel into this role.

@Suthen: Great to see ya round, again. I’ve got another look into Kazakhstan you+ may be interested in next Tues.

      Their onboarding process seems glacial.

things which did not cause Americans to revolt against the government

    -the income tax
    -prohibition
    -FDR’s gold confiscation
    -the draft
-the end of the gold standard
    -the war on drugs
    -TSA abuses
    -Snowden leaks
    -COVID lockdowns

Also, I have a hard time believing that people who’ve never been arrested/jailed would take up arms against the government. I guess they might if enough of them got extremely angry at the same time, but given what’s happened already, I have no idea what the triggering event would be.

    • Evan from Evansville

It’ll have to be 9/11 big. Terrorism wouldn’t strike the same chord. (“The US deserves it, after all.”) I’m guessing an EMP-type event, a total blackout that electronically stops all systems from functioning.

Nuke in orbit? Some coordinated mass ‘hacking’ attack that jams all banking and finance? I don’t think ‘mass loss of life in that place over there’ will do the trick, even if they’re Americans.

      Depression 2.0.

    • Suthenboy

That triggering point is usually called “Nothing left to lose”.

    • Derpetologist

Mass gun confiscation might cause an uprising even though it didn’t in Australia, Canada, or Britain.

And if the people are disarmed, they won’t be able to resist a tyrannical government. Not that they try very hard now.

I think this is the reason American gun grabbers have a Fabian strategy. They know if they tried to disarm everyone at once, they’d have a real armed insurrection to deal with.

    • Pat

I’ve seen stats suggesting that only about 20% of the colonists supported independence/revolution in the 1700s. The COVID bullshit solidly confirmed to me that the revolution will not only not be televised but won’t exist at all. The same people out there thumping their chest, flexing their firearms on social media, and getting “MOLON LABE” tattooed on their skin sat there like a bunch of pussy whipped chumps wearing masks and standing on line 6 feet apart at the grocery store for 2 years. My Home Depot particle mask bearing “Fuck Sisolak” in permanent marker circa 2020 notwithstanding, we most certainly aren’t cut from the same cloth as the rogues who risked life and limb over a stamp tax and tea tax comprising a sub-1% portion of income in 1776.

    TOO LOCAL NEWS: Oh boy

A social media post on an account controlled by the former New Hampshire Libertarian Party calling for political violence inspired a bipartisan backlash against the defunct group.

“We openly support the assassination of basically every elected Democrat in New Hampshire,” the post read. “But if you don’t have the balls to do that then you should probably vote GOP.”

The now-deleted post appeared on the @LPNH X account, which was once the social media site of the New Hampshire Libertarian Party. That group, led by Jeremy Kauffman, was booted out of the national Libertarian Party earlier this year.

The national Libertarian Party responded by reiterating that the message came from a group it disaffiliated earlier this year, a decision upheld by a unanimous vote.

“The Libertarian Party does not condone calls for political violence or the initiation of force,” it said. “The organization in New Hampshire currently making violent extremist comments is not affiliated with the Libertarian Party and does not speak for our party.”

I’m finally back on the ice this weekend as we travel to lovely Park City, UT tomorrow morning for 5 (or 6) games. I’ve been to 1 practice since last season ended, and my cardio is crap, but this is straight-up B Team so we have some not-so-expert skaters with us. They put on a great tournament last year so this should be another fun one.

The next one after this is Vegas in November.

      • The Other Kevin

It is, but I am a bit nervous about it. Thankfully it’s only 2 nights and it’s just to get some games in.

    • Evan from Evansville

Those are exciting trips, and not far apart. Fantastic news, you back on the ice. Not trying to bring it up, but all is apparently well (enough), I’m particularly pleased that concussion has at least physically resolved itself. Great opp to fly the W.

      • The Other Kevin

No worries. I was officially cleared in time for last season’s finale, the May tournament in MN. I haven’t had symptoms since. I am still frustrated that the opposing counsel in my lawsuit is still ignoring us. We only have one vehicle right now and it’s not reliable, so I’m missing practice a lot. Even a small settlement would get us a second car.

Today’s music. It might be AI, but it talks to me today.

This is my day off, but it still speaks to me as well. My current job is actually a literal answer to prayer circa 3 years ago. I net approximately twice as much as my bills after taxes, 401(k) contributions, and high deductible health insurance. I don’t have to leave my house or be on the phone in a call center all day. And I have enough down time during the work day that I’m able to squeeze in a workout on the clock while I basically just stare at a computer screen doing nothing for the last 2 hours of my shift. But human brains being what they are, I find myself completely unchallenged, bored, and restless. I’m about ready to start another business, but haven’t got any good ideas.

  11. Suthenboy

    Lately around these parts:

    1. What started out as a post for here turned into a three year effort to write a book. I wrote it, rewrote it, rewrote the rewrite maybe half a dozen times. I am slow…sue me. Someone, my son or stepson or one of my grandsons decided to update my computer and *poof* it disappeared into the ether. Pleaser, I dont need a lecture on backing things up.
I have begun the process over and I am rewriting it from memory.

    2. A Hawken rifle kit that has been sitting in the back of my safe for 20 years that I had intended to get around to one of these days….well, one of these days finally arrived so I have spent the last month or so working on it. It is shaping up nicely.

Sorry I haven’t been around more
