I didn’t think rollerskating rinks were still a thing. The one I used to visit as a kid closed down by the time I was in high school, and I honest to god haven’t seen one since. Same for stand alone bowling alleys.
It’s actually kind of weird getting old in this environment. When I was a kid there were still cultural institutions and artifacts that kind of bridged the gap between me and my parents. If I had a kid right now, they’d be totally and completely unable to relate to almost anything I did as a kid.
There are still a few roller rinks in our area. They are shit holes and the cops are always there to stop fights.
I remember them all being that way.
There is one in the area where I grew up.

Here, coffee shops are still widespread, barcades and pinball halls exist, bowling alleys and pool halls still linger regionally, and some of the same concert venues I spent many a weekend at are still doing shows. But that requires coordinating with people, planning, getting everyone there, and if you don’t like it, it’s a whole thing.

Jai alai is something like handball or racquetball on steriods, sometimes called the worlds fastest game. Players grasp a giant scoop-like basket (the cesta) that extends beyond their hand, giving more leverage when throwing the pelota (ball).
Jai alai matches often have a round-robin format with players 1 and 2 starting off, the winner plays 3, etc. until one player reaches a certain number of points. The unequal nature of the play (players 1 and 2 play first) means the odds of different players winning (or placing or showing, since it is usually a betting game) are not equal. I wrote a program back when I lived in Florida to calculate the win-place-show odds for players od equal skill, but moved away from Florida before getting to use it much.

A social media post on an account controlled by the former New Hampshire Libertarian Party calling for political violence inspired a bipartisan backlash against the defunct group.
“We openly support the assassination of basically every elected Democrat in New Hampshire,” the post read. “But if you don’t have the balls to do that then you should probably vote GOP.”
The now-deleted post appeared on the @LPNH X account, which was once the social media site of the New Hampshire Libertarian Party. That group, led by Jeremy Kauffman, was booted out of the national Libertarian Party earlier this year.
The national Libertarian Party responded by reiterating that the message came from a group it disaffiliated earlier this year, a decision upheld by a unanimous vote.
“The Libertarian Party does not condone calls for political violence or the initiation of force,” it said. “The organization in New Hampshire currently making violent extremist comments is not affiliated with the Libertarian Party and does not speak for our party.”

They put on a great tournament last year so this should be another fun one.

No worries. I was officially cleared in time for last season’s finale, the May tournament in MN. I haven’t had symptoms since. I am still frustrated that the opposing counsel in my lawsuit is still ignoring us. We only have one vehicle right now and it’s not reliable, so I’m missing practice a lot. Even a small settlement would get us a second car.
This is my day off, but it still speaks to me as well. My current job is actually a literal answer to prayer circa 3 years ago. I net approximately twice as much as my bills after taxes, 401(k) contributions, and high deductible health insurance. I don’t have to leave my house or be on the phone in a call center all day. And I have enough down time during the work day that I’m able to squeeze in a workout on the clock while I basically just stare at a computer screen doing nothing for the last 2 hours of my shift. But human brains being what they are, I find myself completely unchallenged, bored, and restless. I’m about ready to start another business, but haven’t got any good ideas.
